Finding a job
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm getting a second interview on Monday for the game company I applied to work at. With any luck I'll be a game concept artist and be earning some real moolah. I'll probably have to see how busy I am when I start work but I'd like to continue doing commissions. They're a nice fun outlet and an alternative to work work.
I'm also looking into my driving lessons now, just a little annoyed that the nearest driving center isn't so near at all but I guess I need to work that out into my schedule. Preferably, I have daily driving lessons and get them over and done with as soon as possible. Having a car to drive in this country though, is another matter. They're bloody expensive and not very practical to own but the skill is still worth having.

On the subject of pricing one's commissions...
General | Posted 14 years agoI am currently in the process of pricing my commissions one by one and organizing things so that I can set up my official commission price page. However I keep getting conflicted feelings as to how much I should price my work. I have icons, sketches, digital work and reference sheets just to name a few things and I just can't really decide how much to charge. How much is too much. And when am I undercharging.
The real pickle for me is when I do design work. Design is kinda nebulous. If asked to design a new character from scratch, how does one charge for it? Or if I'm tasked with the revamp of an existing character, does it receive the same treatment? Having come from a recently acquired design background, there are certain things I have to do before getting to a final design conclusion like doing research and exploration sketches. Thing is I'm just not sure how to factor the cost for things like that.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Finally! Out of school and back to commissions! And a job!
General | Posted 14 years agoSchool is finally over, had a great grad show and I'm gonna miss my class terribly. We had an awesome time together, suffering, not sleeping, doing work till our hands fell off. Good times.
But now it's time to find work. Been doing the resume dance and been sending out my stuff to a bunch of local companies. A couple have replied but no interviews just yet. And in the mean time, commissions.

Got some promo stuff going on here, do check it out!

Open again for sketches
General | Posted 14 years agoI like doing these, they're usually quite fast and because they're kept loose, a lot of the movement and flow is left behind. I find that doing inked lineart can sometimes kill a sketch. But anyhoo, doing another batch of sketches for $8US a piece.
Examples are http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.....sketchpage.jpg
Most recent batch is herehttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/lildragonett/commissions/commisionsketchsample.jpg
And just did these two :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.....ysketchone.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.....ysketchtwo.jpg
I'm juggling these with homework so it'll take a while to get them done but my turnaround is normally quite fast. If things get rough in school I will work on them over friday+weekend. I would love to go for unlimited slots and offer more kinds of artwork but not until school is over.
That aside, send me reference via email to look through plus any other details you might want to include. On acceptance of work and payment, I'll start the drawing. Please keep things clean, my portfolio is all of clean.

Halfway through
General | Posted 14 years agoHalfway through the last term, that is. Just uploaded some work done during some of the projects. It's fun when I'm not dead tired. It's enjoyable when I'm not wracking my brains for a design solution. Gonna try to paint more regularly, especially environment stuff since that's what is usually required in the industry, also props.
$8 Sketches
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm still up to my eyeballs in industrial design school but I could use some cash; design books are expensive and I need to eat. So I'm taking a little time off to knock out some sketches for $8 a piece.
Mostly creature/anthro for now, no mechanical stuff till I graduate from school. Turnaround time should be quite fast since I'm liable to draw these inbetween homeworks. PG images please. Send ref to my email and on confirmation of payment I'll start work.
Paypal only please, send to renegadedragons[at]hotmail.com
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.....sketchpage.jpg
If you wanna see my other stuff, http://www.furaffinity.net/user/buttburner/
I can only take 3-5 slots right now due to time constraints.
Thanks for looking.

livestream?
General | Posted 15 years agoHello all. I am still alive and term 2 is coming to an end which means a little breathing space before the final run that is term 3.
I just started a live stream channel and I'm wondering if anyone would be interested to come down and watch me doodle. Nothing serious, just letting out some steam through drawing since I tend to draw way more serious stuff in school. Might also do commissions on livestream for fun.
Um yeah. I can't wait for term break.

Sketches from $5
General | Posted 15 years agoI'm halfway through the first week of term break and slowly slogging through my term break homework, trying to remember the importance of chilling out. And drawing my own stuff pretty much counts as chilling out for me besides the usual catching up on books and movies.
So.. sketches!
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4525849
Simpler stuff/not so much detail will be $5.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4588448
And more detail will simply be $5 and above reaching a maximum of $10 for a sketch.
I've also been considering doing sketch pages which is a full page, A6, or multiple quick sketches of your character/whatever it is you want in various poses, head shots, bust shots, whatever comes out of my pen. I'm not sure how to price that, thinking about $15 for that considering that it will be kept loose to preserve the spontaneity. Not sure if anyone is interested though, especially since I don't have an examples at the moment. T_T
I don't really have a limited number of slots at the moment but if it should ever get out of hand, I'll.. um.. say something. o.o
Anyway, please email if you are interested, I really dislike the PM system here.

opening temporarily for commissions?
General | Posted 15 years agoSo term break is on the horizon and I'm being loaded up with so much holiday homework its coming out of my ears. It's a short break, a mere two weeks and I have a ton of things to get down during this time. I was hoping to squeeze in a few commissions though, nothing too heavy. I also want to get everything done before school starts again.
Only thing is I'm not sure what to offer. I guess for the moment I'm more comfortable with offering sketches. No paintings for now because I'm still learning and wouldn't like to mess up any of the commissions.
Is anyone interested to begin with? o.o

school is hard!
General | Posted 15 years agoI'm two weeks deep into school and the laptop just got issued a couple days ago; much fun. I'm swamped with work and it's almost impossible to find time to do other things. It's mainly sleep and work. Homework comes in a heap and the average output per week so far has been nearly 30 A3 pages of work and 5 pages of studies on sketchbook. There's also an information overload and it takes time to process exactly what is required of us in terms of homework and also the theory involved in the lesson.
For the moment I'm eyeball deep in tons of perspective homework, design and digital painting.
It's good shit.

school has begun
General | Posted 15 years agoSchool starts tomorrow and I'm nervous. I'm sure I can sleep tonight though. I've got a friend in the class who's bouncing off the walls from nervous energy and excitement. Compared to her I guess I'm just a quiet rumbling engine waiting for the signal to go. Did some last minute artwork to try and get it out of my system. School has more technical drawings going on, perspective, rendering, form and foundation so I have to lay off the stylizing for a while.
Oh I hope they don't drown me with homework tomorrow. @_@

chugga chugga homeworrrrk
General | Posted 15 years agoThough school has not yet started officially, I am intensely busy. I just shat 50 buses over a period of a week for my assignment that felt like it took forever. Now the assignment is trains, 7 A3 pages worth of them with detail shots. Hurgh. Trains are mos def more interesting and by interesting I mean zomg will you look at the detail going on the wheels there. And no we're not talking about those hi-tech japanese bullet streamlined train things. We're talking old school steam engine shit with chugga chugga and... gears and shit. Staring at it is giving me a headache.
I know I'm complaining a lot about my assignment and I'm not entirely enjoying myself but shit I'd rather be doing this than studying something else or doing essays. In the middle of my first train actually, and it's pretty big, I may be able to 'cheat' and put just 2 trains on this page plus loads of detail shots. Unlike the last assignment which was 7 buses to a paper. Man that was overkill.
What was somewhat aggravating is that it seemed that the rest of the class did way less. I didn't really get to see the other's work, this is just based on what my friend told me. They did like what, 35 buses on 7 pages. And somebody did 3 buses on a single paper. So much paper space! Coulda fit at least 4 more buses in there.
Anyhoo, trying not to stress out over this too much. Entire assignment is to be done in inks. And no cheating. Meaning no rulers. Apparently, according to friend, the reason why a fair number had done theirs quite fast is because they used rulers. Much less effort and concentration in my opinion. Line goes here, whee!
Okay back to work now. Picking mom up from airport at midnight so that should give me enough time to do.. 2 trains with detail shots and dinner with the boyfriend. Let's see if I can start on page 2 today eh.

that art meme...
General | Posted 15 years agoAnd the homework begins. I gotta draw 50 buses by next week. Hence the being awake at this hour. I have problems working in the day, it's too darn hot and noisy. Night time is better for me. I hope I wake up in time for my life drawing session. ... more like I hope the boyfriend wakes up in time for it too. -_-

When did you start drawing?
When I was tiny and could hold a pencil. I remember one of the first few things I drew was a crocodile and a t-rex. Only took it seriously as a career choice when I was 16.
Which hand do you use for drawing?
Right hand. Left hand is for hot keys!
Which is easier to draw - male or female?
Neither. Both can be tricky, just need to understand the form and differences between the two.
Which is easier to draw - long hair or short hair?
Both are ok. Fros and dreadlocks can be annoying though.
Is it easier to draw the head facing towards the right or the left?
At the moment facing left. Working on being able to draw facing right without cheating.
Is it easier to draw the side view of the face or the front view?
Front view is the easiest for me for humans, side view is tricky. Animals both ways are ok. 3/4 is the easiest but thats only because you can actually hide a lot of flaws using a 3/4.
What do you have problems in drawing?
Backgrounds, technical stuff. Painting and real media sometimes. Going to school to fix all that though.
What do you like to draw?
Mostly creatures, I'm fairly open with it as long as I have reference. I don't really like drawing inorganic things but I guess that's because I'm not very familiar with them.
Are you a traditional artist or a digital artist?
Mostly digital, but I'm okay with traditional too.
Where do you start drawing from?
If I'm just doodling, it's a spontaneous action and can come from anything like just a line. Otherwise, a planned drawing will normally have a structure for the figure so I can do the placement right.
What is your drawing habit that you are aware of?
I make the exact same face that the character has when I'm drawing. If the character is smiling, I'm often grinning. It's quite disconcerting to anyone who's watching. Also sometimes I forget to breathe or blink. ... Yes, how does one forget to breathe. I don't really know myself but I've caught myself holding my breath while drawing.
Any tips for coloring/shading?
Study study study. Study real colours outside in nature and study how different kinds of light affect the colours.
How long does it take to finish a piece of art?
Varies. I've done little pieces in 15mins and biggish ones in 5-6 hours.
What music do you listen to while you draw?
Nothing in particular though now I'm listening to old school disco music.
How long does it take you to come up with an idea?
Unless it's homework, most ideas are spontaneous.
Your favorite drawing utensils?
Intuos 4. Would love a cintiq. I have a whole array of pens when I got traditional, favouring the g-tec pen and um... signo DX.
Your favorite color/the color that you use a lot?
Warm black for line work.
Your favorite style(s)?
Sometimes I'm not sure. I like disney. But then again I like sean galloway and um.. this guy named eric... not entirely mainstream styles but they tend to still lean towards the toonish/disney feel.
Are you satisfied with your current art?
NO WAY. I have so much more to go. :D
What kind of artist are you aiming for?
I want to be a concept artist! A character designer! Storyboarder! Illustrator?

going quiet soon
General | Posted 15 years agoToday was first day of prep class for school. I already want to faint from sleepiness. And I wasn't made to do much either. I'll be posting less work and probably end up going on hiatus while I'm in school. I need to go practice my perspective now. @_@
massive change in plans
General | Posted 15 years agoLooks like I managed to get into the June intake for my school after all which means I get the government subsidy I so desperately need. This also means I start school way earlier than I was mentally prepared for. @_@ That and my driving lessons will kinda have to be put on hold. No way am I going to try to squeeze in vroom vroom classes while doing this class.
I'm kinda stressed and pleased at the same time. But more in a daze than anything else. The initial payment has to be down pretty soon, I should ask for an extension or something. Um. Yeah.
*sits somewhere in a state of shock*

Life Updates + Free Sketches
General | Posted 15 years agoWell. Let's see now.
I had my admissions interview with FZD and it went well, I think. I'm so heavily influenced by animation that they're kinda worried I won't be able to keep up with the class, namely because I'll have to get rid of my current style and think in a more design-y way. I'm actually quite curious to find out what kind of changes my art will go through though.
I had a job interview for a small animation company that is actually closing it's operations here this year but they want to wrap up a few more projects before they fully shut down. They do e-books for the iphone/ipad and they look really fun. I've got a senior working there apparently and it's a really small joint, only 3 people in the company. No word back yet though.
Driving theory test coming up next month!
Commissions have been fine so far but I could always do with more work lawl. But for now I'm gonna do a handful of free sketches, I think. First 3 to comment with ref will get something. They'll be messy-ish full body sketches with construction lines and everything, some crosshatching shading, kinda like this --> http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.....reeraccoon.jpg
Probably will all be done today after I work on today's piece. If I'm still bored I may do more free sketches.. though, an artist's gotta eat! XD

schools and subsidies
General | Posted 15 years agoThe government subsidy for the school I was going to has changed and it's probably going to be more expensive and definitely more than I can afford. I can't stand this. This is the only school in my country which is doing this field of study and the only other option which is really, a non option is to go overseas.
I hope I don't have to take up a study loan.
Stupid subsidy.

Updates + Commissions
General | Posted 15 years agoThings are slowly getting hectic; I'm just about done with my application for school and will be going for the interview probably next week. I also have managed to get an interview with an animation company for a freelance position. I hope things go well and they like my work. I suppose what's also very important is that I can do the work given! I tend to get so worried about given work I can't handle like doing websites. >_<
In the mean time, I'll keep myself busy with commissions. :D

open for commissions!
General | Posted 15 years agoFor those of you who haven't been following, I'm currently out of a job and am trying to sustain myself via freelancing and doing commissions. While I am kinda free-ish to do more commissions than I'm usually able to handle, I am still studying for my driving basic theory test and also dealing with my application to school. But turnaround should still be pretty quick, usually within a few days.
So to start this off.. icons!

As a side note, just wondering if my prices are reasonable or whether I'm overcharging/undercharging. Advice would be highly appreciated.

I've finally quit
General | Posted 16 years agoI left my job yesterday and I feel so much better. I was wondering why I've been so sore as of late and I think all the stress and anger being bundled inside was taking a toll on me. Feels so good to be free.
My exit 'interview' was awful though, what with the boss demanding to know how I was handling the transferring of duties to my other colleagues. I suspect this is because previous angry and malicious designers messed with the system, deleting working files and renaming things and he didn't want me doing the same thing. I like to think I am much more mature than that.
The boss went on to tell me that I was not ready for work as I was still in school mode and unable to cope with the real working world. Now while it is true that this is my first job in an office, I have worked in a studio before and it works way way differently from this office. I was made to do secretarial work and answer phone calls, order supplies and chase people around. And while I finished a great deal of the work they gave me, it was never enough, not when they would make me stop what I was doing only to give me work of higher priority and when I finished that, more high priority work was given. I could never get back to the original work I was doing and so of course it never gets done.
I feel real sorry for the two designers who are left there in the office and I can only hope they don't go too crazy now that I'm gone; I was the only one answering the phone since they had very poor answering the phone skills.
I need to rant and let that out. X_X
I guess for now it's commissions in full force while I go book my driving lessons and prepare for my October intake to school again. At least this sorta gives me much more time to focus on drawing again, going to the zoo on monday!

that's the end of that i guess
General | Posted 16 years agoWell guys I finally quit my job, serving my one week notice right now. I feel much happier though, but I am worried as to how I will be supporting myself. I will be spamming the companies in the area for freelance work and I think I'll try working with the zoo, might be able to draw them a critter or two for their zoo magazine or something.
I've never considered relying solely on commissions for income and while I'm rather keen to try, I kinda worry as to whether there will be enough orders to keep my bills paid. I have a few things to deal with which unfortunately require quite a bit of money. My pc has served me faithfully for 4 years now and needs an upgrade; photoshop is going real slow on me and making painting extremely hard and annoying. I also will be going for my driving lessons and intend to pass my test before october which is when I am going back to school.
Oh well.
Is there anywhere else I can post my commission availability? I've tried the FA forums and am currently also using the communities over at livejournal but I'd like to find more ways to reach a bigger target audience. If anyone would like to commission me or you know someone who may be interested, please let them know I'm available.
Wish me luck.

angry artist things : rage against the system
General | Posted 16 years agoRight now I'm an angry angry artist.
I live in Asia, on a tiny island off the tip of Malaysia. We are an almost first world country but not quite. We suffer from just about no natural disasters; they just can't reach us and we are out of the ring of fire. We import just about everything into our country, including water; we're just not big enough to be self sufficient. And we are home to some of the worst bosses in the world.
More so if you are in the art industry.
For the longest time, art was considered more or less a waste of time. It brought in little money and did little good to the economy. More of a luxury than a commodity. When the country first started out, it was all about the lawyers and the doctors and the engineers. I mean well, we have to get a country off it's feet, yes? Just recently, the government has taken an interest in this art thing, what with the sudden influx of CGI movies and lovely 3D animations. And what with the amount of money the entertainment industry makes, they are VERY interested.
Several problems though.
- No one respects artists. Why, you wonder. I wish I knew. Sometimes I think it has to do with a lack of art in our culture and the older generation simply doesn't know how to treat an artist.
- Many people assume our work is easy. If only I could count the times people have said to me, 'It can't be that hard, really, it's just drawing.' Or, 'It's just clicking a few buttons.'
- Many people assume one doesn't have to study to be able to art and is thus a lazy man's subject. Of course they have no idea that art is anything but lazy and artists spend a lifetime learning technique and keeping their skills up to par.
- Ok I'm not sure how this works out in other countries but here, artists especially, are not entitled to overtime pay. I've worked from 8.30am to 10pm and have had friends who've worked till 3am and through the weekends without any compensation. I think something's a little off here. I should add that this working overtime without pay is a commonly accepted practice so arguing against it will only get you shown to the door. Again if people would be kind enough to let me know how it works in their country, that'd be nice.
I guess these are just a few of the issues on my head at the moment. Please pardon me if I sound disjointed or anything but I'm really tired and I take up extra drawing classes after work on Mondays.
I think I'm done for now.
Just gonna.. put my commission list here as usual.

General | Posted 16 years agoDue to unfortunate but not entirely unforeseen reasons, I will be leaving my job next week. My two bosses have proven unreasonable and downright sickening, going as far as to accuse me of lying and of planting things in their rooms among other things. I, the sole illustrator of the company, have been reduced to doing administrative work and extremely basic layout work any intern can do and have been given no drawing to do despite that being my job title. In fact the drawing has even been outsourced. The nerve of some people.
Which leaves me now in a jobless oh dear state. I guess I'll have to spam some local companies for freelance work and use my free time to practice my art and pick up new techniques along the way. I am going back to school at the end of the year anyway so.. I think freelance is the best thing for me to do right now.
Which means I am extremely open to commissions. :3
