"Transgender" and "cisgender" are ridiculous, outdated terms
Posted 11 years agoThere's a gigantic, wonderful grab-bag of different gender identities out there - why on Earth do we keep on insisting that people who have a more "traditional" gender identity should be labeled separately from those with a "nontraditional" one, and vice-versa?
By trying to divide these identities into two overly-broad categories, we do nothing but promote discrimination and hatred and all sorts of negative bullshit... this is holding us back as a society from growing towards mutual respect and understanding.
Seriously, though... by continuing to use those two terms, we keep bringing the focus back to the very thing we try to move past: the equipment we have in our pants.
If someone identifies as a specific gender, it shouldn't matter whether or not they were assigned that gender at birth, or had bottom surgery, or whatever - what matters is one thing, and that's the fact that they identify as that gender.

Top-of-the line art program for only $3.00 =O
Posted 11 years agoSo! I've been a big, big fan of Sketchbook Pro (https://www.sketchbook.com/)... a big fan. I've recommended it to several of my friends, and as of the recent update it had, I've decided to post a journal about it.
It is the most intuitive and easiest to use of any art program I've tried. Now, previously, I still had to use Photoshop for layer effects and blending modes, but now that's all been integrated into SBP, so I can use it as my sole art program.
Oh, and... it's only $3.00 if you want to give the full thing a go.
In what is one of the most brilliant business models I've seen, you have a few options for purchasing the program. You can buy it outright for $65, OR... you can do a subscription payment method instead. That only costs $24.95 a year, or you can do it monthly at $2.99/month.
There's no contract or shady adware or anything; it really, truly is a top-notch art program that you can start using today if you can scrounge together $3.00.
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR GO TRY IT OUT ALREADY SERIOUSLY

The Art of Perspective (or hide it in a hat)
Posted 11 years agohttp://www.amazon.com/Perspective-M.....dp/0486404730/
Best $7 I ever spent.
It's an unassuming little book, but holy shit... when you're done reading it, you will actually understand perspective.
Perspective - the single most important thing an artist can learn, yet also the single most intimidating.
And, guess what? It's actually really, really simple. Shockingly so.
It's like how people joke about wanting some magic pill they can take that will make them a much better artist, except, like... it's for real.

H.R. Giger and furry self-censorship
Posted 11 years agoI despair whenever I see a talented anthro artist respond to getting a mainstream art gig by deciding to hide all of the "naughty" art they've drawn.
It happens time and time and time again, and it's unnecessary and downright unhealthy. Seriously, artists... stop it! I know it's scary, landing your first gig and all, and I know you don't want to screw things up, but...
...no one cares that you draw porn.
In the eyes of the non-furry world, it doesn't matter if what you draw has dicks or tits or dicksand tits; all that matters is that you do damn good art.
The furry fandom has such a weird hangup about porn, honestly, and it's so silly to see artists react as if everyone else has the same hangup.
Take H.R. Giger, for example. When he died the other day, we lost one of the most important, influential, and groundbreaking artists to ever have lived.
And you know what made Giger famous?
Works like THIS: http://vikisecrets.com/uploaded/lar.....e_spell_iv.jpg
That piece is more twisted, bizarre, and utterly sexual than almost anything you'll ever see in the fandom, and there are so many more works like it from Giger.
So, when I see people worry about getting found out because they drew some foxes fucking some time, I can't help but sigh, you know?
---
HOMEWORK FOR YOU ALL: In honor of H. R. Giger, go check out some galleries of his work. It'll put things into perspective, and hopefully expand the horizons of some of you. =)

Draw me like one of your French curves
Posted 11 years agoI love drawing rumps. Love love love drawing them.
How is it, then, that it took me until tonight to realize that using French curve tools makes drawing said shapely rears MUCH easier?
In fact, why on Earth have I spent so much time trying to freehand erase my art, when I could have just plunked down an appropriate French curve and made that so much simpler? D:
Ah well.
LESSON LEARNED. FRENCH CURVES KICK ASS

Posted 11 years agoADD COMPLEMENTARY COLORS TO YOUR SHADING
Is the part of the character that you're shading orange-ish? THROW SOME DARK, SATURATED CYAN AND BLUE ON THAT MOTHERFUCKER. Bam! It's like magic.
Seriously, it's that easy. Try it out! I'll wait...
(I can count the number of furry artists I know of on one hand that do this, and it's a shame - it's so easy to do, and it makes pictures muuuuuuuuch nicer)
...you back? Wasn't that MAGICAL? I bet that hand or tail or muzzle or cock or whatever you just did that too looks like it's fucking real now. See, the reason this works is because shadows in real life contain the complement of whatever they're falling on. What's CRAZY is that it's almost impossible to see this unless you know to look for it, because your brain just translates "dark complementary color" into black.
That's right, doing this is literally hacking the minds of people who see your artwork.
What's even crazier is that doing this produces shadows that can look even blacker than if you use actual black.
Next time, we'll examine what happens if you use low saturation complementary colors as highlights. HINT: It's fucking awesome

Clearing up a few things about my BPD awareness journal.
Posted 12 years agoIt has come to my attention that people are misconstruing my previous BPD awareness journal as saying that "everyone that’s indirectly involved with the situation (whenever they know the situation or not) is mental" or even that I "legitimately thinks everyone leaving FA has a mental disorder".
Even though I believe that most of you who are watching me understood what I was getting at, I want to address this for those people who are being linked my page from outside sources.
Firstly, I specifically stated in said journal that "a lot of individuals I was interacting with" (as in, specifically talking to) were at risk of BPD. There were about four or five people in particular, which reminded me of my experience first-hand with the effects of this particular disorder. I know how—if untreated—how destructive the consequences can be. Having been reminded of this, I was inspired to make a journal.
Now, clearly I'm not a doctor - this is why my journal attempted to do nothing more than give a few warning signs and then links to a resource page for more information.
I take issues of mental disorders very, very seriously, and I'm bothered that a genuine and innocuous journal is being twisted into being some sort of political statement. It's not a political statement.
Now, I understand that tone is very hard to convey online, but I have to stress: Any "smug" or "superior" sound to my posts isn't intentional. I struggle very much with communicating correctly, due to my specific mental disability, so I apologize for any failure on my end to phrase things in a way that sounds as I'm intending.
---
Having said all of that, I am not sorry for raising awareness - this is an important topic to me. In the interests of providing more information, I will link a very helpful and informative video that I recommend for those wanting more info without my... "smug"... tone.
(Yes, I'm aware that the part about "smug tone" sounded smug. ;p That was the joke)

Borderline Personality Disorder awareness
Posted 12 years agoIf there's one good thing to come of this whole drama issue, it's that I've realized that a lot of individuals I've been interacting with are at risk of having Borderline Personality Disorder.
Individuals with BPD are noted for having a tendency to feel emotions very deeply (and that will change at a moment's notice), and also for what's known as "black-and-white thinking" or "splitting."
Basically, to someone with BPD, people are either paragons of virtue, or reprehensible aspects of vice. There are no in-betweens. In fact, they will apply those labels to the same person, alternating between loving and hating them on a seeming whim.
This leads to situations where such individuals can cause vast amounts of emotional and physical harm to themselves or others.
Borderline Personality Disorder is a very, very serious condition, and if untreated, can have tragic results.
However, there is hope! If you or someone you know has been exhibiting the previously-mentioned symptoms, please please go to the following link:
http://www.bpdresourcecenter.org/
Doing so can save lives; one of those lives may even be your own.
EDIT: To those individuals telling me to remove this journal - all of which, so far, have claimed to have already "left FA", but whatever - no. I will not. I am not claiming to be a licensed doctor, nor am I telling people that everyone with BPD is a bad person - what I am doing is advising people who may be at risk for BPD to seek treatment. If you disagree with me, fine, but I will not harbor attempts to start arguments or fights on my page. I will block you. Go soapbox on your own pages, don't shit all over mine, okay?

Upcoming Super Bowl!
Posted 12 years agoI'm not a football fan or really a sports fan of any sort. In fact, years of living in Denver reaaaallly turned me away from any interest in football, mainly because of how many times the damn city rioted whenever the Broncos won anything. And how freaking crazy that city was about sports. Needless to say, I absolutely despise Denver in every way.
Furthermore, I'm originally from Seattle. My favorite city in the world! I love it so much. Unfortunately, the Seattle Seahawks aren't exactly known for being... good at the sport. Or, they weren't, until they made their first Super Bowl appearance ever a few years ago (and promptly lost.)
Cut to today, when I find out that the Seahawks made it to another Super Bowl! Yay! And, best of all....
...they're going to be playing against the Broncos. >:D
So! The team from my absolute favorite city ever, versus the team from the city I hated living in the most, facing off in the country's biggest sporting event. There's no WAY I'm missing that.

One more thing about latest drama
Posted 12 years agoFor those of you who've been outright accusing the individual in this latest drama as being a "known rapist" or "serial rapist" and then who get angry when your comments are moderated, check this link:
http://www.avvo.com/legal-answers/c.....--1479976.html
You are committing defamation and it is the duty of FA to moderate defamatory comments. Furthermore, if they don't, then they themselves are potentially open for getting sued.
Think about it. The same policies that are leading to your comments being "censored" are protecting you in case someone decides to start spreading defamatory shit about you.
Would you like it if people started posting in journals all across this site accusing you of raping someone? Of course not. In fact, I'm pretty certain you would (rightfully) expect the admin staff to do their best to keep that from happening.
---
I swear, the one thing that pisses me off more than anything else is when people can't see past their own bullshit long enough to get some empathy for other people. Uggggh.

Latest drama hitting a bit close to home =/
Posted 12 years agoMixed feelings about the latest "FA drama." First, my understanding is that people are outraged because FA is putting a certain individual who has a "reputation for being a sexual predator" in a position of power on the site.
Has this person been convicted or even formally accused of these crimes? As far as I'm aware, no. But... they have a "reputation" for it.
Now, I'm going to be very clear about this next part: judging people based on unsubstantiated rumor is a fucking shitty thing to do.
Mainly because I know firsthand what it's like when false allegations get thrown about.
In my particular cause, several individuals were outright stating that I had attempted to rape a particular friend of mine, and were trying to get me blackballed in the fandom. They did this out of malice for some imagined slight, as far as I could tell. The shitty thing is that the friend of mine had no clue about what was being spread around until someone came to her about it, at which point she got pissed that people were trying to start shit. Apparently, my suitability as a commissioner and as a person was in doubt, because I was a "predatory rapist" and was I a bad person who couldn't be trusted.
I'm going to say this again: people got pissed at me, started rumors that I tried raping a friend of mine, and spread that information around to discredit me. That is a horrible, life-destroying thing to do to someone. There was no evidence needed or even solicited, just a "I heard that so-and-so" and it spread like fucking wildfire.
Oh, and the best part? I'm a rape survivor myself. Both from my early childhood and from within the last few years. What happened to me when I was raped is going to stick with me for the rest of my life, and I struggle with it constantly, but you know what? None of that mattered to the individuals who started the rumors.
So, having said that—if you are an individual who passes along unsubstantiated or unfounded malicious rumors and gossip about another individual, no matter your how noble your intentions may be, then odds are you're actively taking part in the destruction of another person's life.
And that's fucked up beyond all belief.

Posted 12 years agoNooope. Not moving. FA's been pretty damn dependable, all things considered, and I don't mind staying here.

Anyway, yeah. No need to have to worry about following a bazillion different accounts of mine if you want to make sure you catch everything I upload. You can find all my stuff right here. :D

Staples and Copics: Bait and switch, or honest mistake?
Posted 12 years agoI'm sure everyone here's heard about that nonsense that happened with Staples in regards to Copic markers. Now, Consumerist has taken to reporting on this issue... unfortunately, their write-up is completely and totally erroneous. =/ They compare what Staples did to any other advertising slip-up, and chide the justifiably angry customers.
Here's what actually happened:
1. Copics were on sale last week. Most notably was a set of 72 markers for $16. Now... taken by itself, that could be considered a simple pricing error. In fact, Staples addressed it as such, pulling the markers from stock, cancelling the orders, and informing customers that they would be back up at the "correct price". Now, if that had been all that'd happened, there wouldn't really be a story. This leads to the next point:
2. Copics went back up yesterday and were available in stock again. It was at this time that I myself placed an order for two sets. During the checkout process, there was a notice letting me know that the products "might not be available"... but that gladly linked me back to the rest of the site to look at OTHER marker sets instead. Also note, in order to process the order, Staples required a lot of my personal info—despite me using a "guest" checkout. Part of this process included trying to make me agree by default to receiving tons of their advertising and spam.
3. Said order was able to be completed, with a confirmation number and all. So, we have: Markers put back up at a price stated to be correct by Staples, an attempt to get customers to buy other products instead, phising for personal information, and then a confirmation for the order after all.
4. Later in the day, the markers went out of stock again and were unavailable.
5. Finally, and very important: It wasn't just "a set" of Copics available at a discount. It was three entire pages of markers, all priced in a way that made sense to each other. Far, far beyond a simple "typographical error".
Today, I (and many, many other customers) received e-mails letting us know that these orders were all going to be cancelled due to "incorrect pricing".
Taken as a whole, you have a company that advertised several products for sale in a bid to business to their page, then that ended up reaping untold amounts of valuable e-mail addresses (very valuable) and personal contact information, and all without any intention whatsoever to honor their sales.
This is fucked. Up.

My unique approach to commissioning puts the customer first. This means that I'm going to make commissioning me simple, easy, and fruitful. After all - you want to give me money, why should I make that difficult?
"How do you manage to do that?" you ask. "Everyone knows that, in the fandom, the artists are the gods that us lowly peons must worship. :("
Well, to that I say: Bah! Also, there are no gods or kings, only... okay, that quote doesn't quite work here, but you catch my drift.
Caedere's Customer Bill of Rights:
1. You have the right to be treated kindly. This one's pretty obvious - no one likes working with people who unpleasant, and I aspire to do my utmost to be nice to my customers. In return, I expect the same. This is listed first because it is by far the most important thing—if you think I'm being an asshole, call me out on it. If you're being an asshole, I'll politely point that out to you (and may decide not to do business with you again).
2. You have the right to ask me to draw anything you want. Note: I will draw anything, but not everything. What this means is that I am open to drawing absolutely any and everything (although work that involves someone else's character will need for me to get their express permission), but I reserve the right to decline taking on a piece for any reason. Don't be afraid to propose something to me; I promise you, I've drawn weirder than anything you could imagine.... at the same time, don't be upset if I say no.
3. You have the right to repost anything I draw for you, wherever you want... just please please please make sure I get credited for it. Same thing goes if you want to recolor it - credit me for the linework.
4. You have the right to use the dreaded... PAYPAL. I'm totally down with taking Paypal. I do request you keep the description on the payments discreet, however. I'm considering using an invoice system as well, but for now, I'll just do it standard.
5. You have the right to communicate with me. Notes work just fine, e-mail too, no messenger though. I promise you that I will not ignore you. Yes, I know about how to tell if someone's read a note you've sent, and I know how frustrating it can be to know that an artist has read something you sent but refuses to write back. Please understand that, while I won't always be able to get back RIGHT AWAY, I do promise to do my best to take no longer than 24 hours to respond to any inquiries about one's pending commissions.
6. You have the right for me to not go batshit insane, delete all of my art, take everyone's money, and run for the hills. Yeah, I've had that happen to me and it sucks.
7. You have the right to timely artwork. If we agree on a deadline for a piece, and I take longer than that deadline—barring dramatic and drastic circumstances—then we can discuss a refund for uncompleted portion of the art.

Upcoming Changes or: Where All the Arts Went
Posted 12 years agoI will be opening commissions in the very, very near future, and in anticipation of this I will be moving all of the existing artwork in my gallery to Scraps. Do not fear, I'm not yanking me whole gallery or anything like that. Also, I will be trimming out the Image Not Found submissions that are plaguing my page... for some reason, FA decided to eat those, so they're gone and are just busy being a void-shaped eyesore. D=
In other news, I'm opening commissions super-soon. =D I've put a lot of thought into exactly how I'll be doing this; it's going to be a very different approach than normal, and you guys will love it.
