I've been working since last November to get a hysto on the books, and after overcoming many barriers with navigating insurance and other things, I've finally got a date set in early October!
So, to help cover the cost of the surgery that insurance doesn't cover, I'm running a big sale in my store on everything from prints to originals! We've already raised about $330 through streaming, but we need to hit at least $1077 to fund the total expenses. My partner, stigmata, also has a sale going on in his store, if you'd prefer something from there!
And as always, Patrons can use their discount code on top of the sale prices.
The sale will run until at least Monday the 10th, or until we (hopefully!) reach funding. Thank you so much, everyone! <3

❧ Winter Commissions Slots open MONDAY
Posted 8 years agoMy available hours for the Winter December 2017 - February 2018 season will be opening this coming Monday. For this quarter I am only taking 60 hours total to keep my queue time responsible.
If you are interested in a digital commission specifically, I would highly suggest you take this opportunity, as there is a chance I will be taking traditional commissions only for the Spring 2018 quarter.
This is because I'm currently spending half of my time in Iowa when my partner is in the country, and the other half of my time in Austin when he is away in Europe, and I may or may not be able to fit my entire digital workstation (PC + Monitor + Cintiq 21UX takes up a lot of space) in my wee Honda Civic on top of my entire convention setup when I drive down for TFF in February. Soooo, uh, we'll see!!
As always, my Commission Page is here and you can peek at my current queue status at my Trello as well.

Temporary Studio Move, Autumn Commissions Full
Posted 8 years agoIf you follow me on Twitter you may have noticed things have been a bit scattered the last week or two. There's been a lot of construction and general background distraction in the house, on top of my packing up my primary art equipment to temporarily relocate. I'll be heading north a handful of states to spend the month at the furry commune to share studio space with @stigmata, which I fully anticipate to be an awesome time.
I'll also be in on this week's #FURSONATIME this Saturday so be sure to drop in for that!
The second order of business:
Thank you, everyone! Autumn commission slots are now full. What an awesome batch of characters and ideas you guys have brought me! I'm stoked to get to spend the next couple of months working on them.
The next block of hours will open in late November or early December. I plan to keep my current rate through at least BLFC 2018, though, and the discount rate for trans/NB/intersex/etc characters will remain intact.
Oh, lastly: I've finally hit 900 followers here on FA, how cool! <3 As promised, I'll be doing a print giveaway very soon. Look out for it starting early next week once I get my PC set up in the new studio.

I just wanted to give you a heads up that I'm doing a free Print Giveaway to celebrate 1000 followers over on Twitter! All you have to do to qualify is be following, like and RT by 4pm CST on Monday.

I'll be posting a new journal when they open up, but in the mean time, here are the details so you can prepare:

I want to be on the radar as someone who is all about birds and non-cis characters, so if you have a friend who might be interested, pass it along!

Gencon & Returning from the Land of Ice and Fire
Posted 8 years agoWhew, my ridiculously busy summer is rushing towards an end! In the interests of making this journal short enough that I actually finish it, I'll go by topic:
Travels Abroad: I just made it back from my month-long stint of hiking, backpacking and an artist's residency in Iceland. It both gave to and took from me in unexpected ways, and on the whole made for a long and unusual journey that will take some time to fully digest. In the mean time, I've already finished and am continuing to work on art inspired by the landscape, culture, and my experiences of both.
Gencon: I leave for Gencon tomorrow evening! I'll be at table 59 in the art show and am very much looking forward to the event. I'll be debuting some of my new mini originals I did during my Iceland travels, and will be fully restocked on playmats (which tend to mostly sell out at the end of each con, so grab one early on!), AND I'm offering 10% off all sales during the first two hours of the show (10am to 12pm on Thursday), which includes canvas prints and originals!
As soon as I get back from Gencon next week, I'll be mailing out the playmat pre-orders taken during Anthrocon, so you can expect those on your doorstep by the end of August.
Commissions!: Progress has been slow through this year of my learning that 11 conventions is too many for me to reasonably balance in my life, but commissions will be re-opening very soon! I don't have a very long queue, but I'll still be taking the last two weeks of August to make progress on pre-existing commissions. I'll post both here on FA and on social media when I have a more exact date, but in the mean time you can expect commissions to re-open in the first week of September. As always, you can find my commission page with examples and my current rate on my website. Feel free to email me with any questions or initial inquiries at cael.illus[at]gmail.com-- please do NOT send me an FA note, I'll only tell you to email me instead if you do so. Thank you in advance!

Recovery Fund Follow-Up (Thank you!!) and General Update
Posted 8 years agoFirst off-- a HUGE thank you to everyone who contributed to, helped spread the word about, hung out in the stream for, or even just expressed condolences in regards to the Art Supply Recovery Fund. With what everyone pitched in, I was able to fully replace the missing supplies, which is wonderful. I wrote a follow-up/thank you post here if you'd like to take a look.
As for a more general round of updates-- Whew, this year has been intense so far, and we're not even halfway through! Last year was my first year jumping into doing conventions, and I did maybe 6-8. They went well, and so I decided to do more of them to cast a wide net and figure out which ones were worth doing or not, and of course as a source of income to support my doing more personal work and get my artwork out there.
And for the most part they're still going well, but, uh... oh my gosh, you guys. I'm on the books for TWELVE cons this year and now that they're almost back to back instead of with a month or so between them, it's super exhausting. I enjoy doing them, but after this year, will definitely need to cut it back to 3-6 a year so that I actually have a chance to take care of myself and produce new work! So, that's why I've been behind with keeping on top of uploads to FA and such-- it's the only site I can't really post new work to from my phone without it being incredibly tedious, and I just haven't been on my PC much with all the driving to and from shows.
I'm making an effort to catch my gallery submissions back up, though, so hopefully I can get it back up to pace soon!
As for upcoming cons, remember that you can always check where I'm confirmed to be at by checking the panel on the right-hand side of my website, but as far as fur cons go, the last two I'm doing this year are BLFC and AC. Next year I will probably only be doing one fur con (I haven't decided which yet) so that I have more time to create new art, so if you're attending, grab some prints or the like while you can!

Giving my FIRST EVER panel talk at TFF!
Posted 8 years agoSo, this is short notice as I've been so busy with con prep, but--
I'll be giving my first ever panel talk at Texas Furry Fiesta, this Sunday at 5:30pm in the Spectrum room on the 2nd floor! I'll be talking about Illustrating Narrative and Emotion with Color and Light, a topic I'm obviously quite in love with and excited to share with you all. I'm also participating as a panelist (amongst others!) in the LGBTQIA Inclusion panel at 5pm on Saturday.
I've also prepared quite a bit of artwork for the Art Show, and will hopefully be in the Artist's Alley-- Since TFF is daily lotto, I can't say for 100% sure which days I will or won't have a table, but I'm hoping to be able to grab one each day. Check my Twitter for updates on this!
Whew! This has been a hectic con crunch but I'm excited to see a bunch of you good folks there-- Have a great con!

Holy Crow! It's ~~FURTHER CONFUSION~~ Time!
Posted 9 years agoAs of posting, I'm in Flagstaff, AZ, the halfway point of my roadtrip from Austin to San Jose for FC2017! This is my first time doing FC (actually only my second furry con, even!) and I am soo stoked for it. Here's what you need to know to find me and my work at the show:
Art Show: Here is a preview of just some of the originals I'll have up for bid in the art show! I've been in crunch mode getting 4 new oil pieces done and I'm super proud of the results. I'll be posting those as individual uploads tonight and tomorrow. In addition, I'll have several affordable ink originals, plus a few huge fancy Limited Edition Giclee and Limited Edition Canvas Prints up. I'm still not sure if FC art show space is assigned or what, but I'll post a new journal once that is all set up.
Dealer's Room: This one should be easy! Here's where you'll be able to find me. Just go left from the entrance and I'll be a short ways down on your right, on the end of a row. Just look for the tall grey panels across from my friend
Stigmata. I'll have all of my Luster Prints (which I only offer at conventions!) plus postcard packs, gaming mats, and more.
I WILL be offering badge commissions for the first time ever! The example for that will be posted tomorrow, but know that I am only taking 2 slots a day for at-con commissions, so get in there quick! I'll also be open for my full breadth of commission options, so ask if you'd like to see that too! Lastly, I've hired my friend
Ransom as my assistant for this con, so ask if you'd like to see his commission offerings as well! I'm super excited to have him along and you should definitely go check out his work.

Whew, I think that's it for now! The roadtrip thus far has been sooo gorgeous. It was actually my birthday yesterday, and I spent the entire day on the road driving through the Southwest, with some of the most beautiful landscapes I've ever seen.

Amazing reference for dragon wings-- leucistic bat
Posted 9 years agoI thought folks might find this useful-- I see a fair amount of dragon (or otherwise bat-winged) characters with the webbing of their wings a different color on the top versus the bottom, and I've always wondered about whether that would be possible and how the colors would look different due to the translucency, or in different lighting conditions...
Well, I'm stunned to find some wonderful reference that can provide a ton of insight! Check out these photos on the Facebook page of a bat rescue in Australia which has a leucistic bat. In some of the photos you can see where spots on one side of the wing are slightly visible on the other side.
...Okay, maybe not ALL of you will find this quite as incredibly exciting a find as I do, but I'm also betting that some of you will be even more excited, so it all balances out... right? :}

Fall Commission Slots are OPEN!
Posted 9 years agoIt's finally time! Commission slots for the fall are up for grabs. After this, there may or may not be new ones available until 2017-- in either case, this is the last opening at my current rates. (A decision I didn't make lightly-- I keep track of my work hours carefully, and have realized that I have been consistently charging for a good amount fewer hours than I wind up devoting to a piece... I am looking to re-structure my commissions going forward as being hour-based, which I think will be more fair for everyone involved. Thank you so much for your understanding!)

I survived the summer convention season!
Posted 9 years agoSorry for the lack of updates lately, folks! I've been swamped with the big events of the summer, but things have been going really well. I had an amazing time at my biggest convention thus far, Gencon, and even had the privilege of meeting a couple of you good folks there! That was followed just this past week by DragonCon, which also exceeded my expectations. With those done, my first big year of conventions is mostly wrapped up, and I can start getting back into the normal flow of things.
That means an update on commissions: I'm still closed for new commissions until the last couple things in my current queue are finished up. I'll probably be opening back up for a few limited slots in the first few days of October: This will be the last time you can grab some work from me at my current rate! After that, I'll be re-organizing my commissions page and my rate will go up slightly to reflect the amount of time I've been finding I actually wind up investing in each piece.
Also as I mentioned to a few people at DragonCon: Normally my open edition Luster Prints are only available in person at conventions. However, in a few weeks, I will be having a sale for only a couple of days, to clear out what is left from this year's conventions. If you don't expect to run into me at a show any time soon but would like to grab a print, this will be your chance! I'll post here when that is around the corner, but signing up for my mailing list is also a sure bet to hear when that will be going on.

Thank you, TFF 2016!
Posted 9 years agoWhew! Thank you so much to everyone for showing me such an awesome first fur con! I had a great time and did better than I anticipated, which I think was a much needed confidence boost-- it felt like a sign that I'm starting to turn a corner with sustaining myself through my art, that I might actually be able to do this. Thank you so much to everyone who bought some art and supported my work, or even just stopped by to say hi and introduce yourself. It was a really cool experience all around.
I'll definitely be doing more fur cons in the future-- though the way TFF's Artist Alley was set up was entirely too stressful, so I think it's Dealer's Den or bust from now on. I'm hoping to do MFF this year, but that will depend on whether I can grab a spot. Maybe I'll see some of you there, with any luck on both our sides!
For those of you whom inquired about commissions; I'll have a post going up in the next few days with an update on all that! Posted 9 years agoI arrived in Dallas today and have (mostly) finished setting up my Art Show panels, save for adding my business cards tomorrow morning! I'm also hoping to be in the Artist's Alley all three days-- though since it's lottery, I'll have to play that by ear.
