Thinking about offering prints...
Posted 16 years ago
got me thinking about offering prints, but I'm not sure where to begin selecting candidates for them. Are there any artings of mine you'd particularly like to have as prints? Or, at least, do you have any suggestions for big sellers? I'm so bad at narrowing down my work, and I've found that the images I like the most are rarely as appreciated.
Additionally, could I have some advice on pricing? I've never done this whole print thing, so I'm completely lost.
More from the world of academia
Posted 16 years agoI just got my hands on a portfolio full of my academic work. My mom had taken them because she wanted 'em XD
Anyway, I'll be photographing them and posting the pictures soon.
Also, here's a shameless plug- Tama business has slowed down a bit, so I have time to pump them out superfast. If you've been thinking about getting one, now's a good time! Hint hint wink wink

Art/commission meme thingiemado
Posted 16 years agoSo I've seen dozens of these going around, I finally had to cave and do a meme
1. Ever got so frustrated you cussed out your computer or art supplies in a fit a rage?
No, I don't throw tantrums. I can be frustrated enough to just close the window without saving, but that's it. The only times I've ever cussed at anything would be when I spilled a jar of india ink across a large watercolor I was working on, and when my computer crashed right before I remembered to save a commission.
2. Ever raised the price on a customer just because you didn't like the person?
Do people actually do this? I'm not being paid to like someone, I'm being paid to do what I've advertised. I never adjust the quality of my art, either. A commitment is a commitment
3. Have you ever completed a commission that you took a lot of pride in only to have the customer pick it apart?
Luckily I've never had that done on a commission, but it has happened on a trade or two. The first time it ever happened I had tried really hard on an inked piece I was doing as a gift. I was so excited to see the reaction he'd have, but all he said was "Thank you but you forgot his necklace"
At first I was all D: but then I was like ;_;
4. Have you ever royally fucked up on a commission?
Nooooohohoho. I am never more careful than when I'm being paid. If I ever were to fuck up, though, I'd start over.
5. Have you ever been told "Draw it in this artist style" by a customer?
Nah, I think people would rather just commission that other artist. And I find it a little disrespectful to make money off of someone else's style, ya know? Unless it's not an independent artist. If I were told "do it in TLK style" I'd give it a crack. But I wouldn't just clone it. I'd add my own touch.
6. Have you refused a commission before?
Not yet, but then again I haven't been asked to do anything outside of my comfort zone. There are some things that I personally do not like to draw, though I have nothing against the customer.
7. Ever looked at a commission that a person bought and just shook your head knowing you do better work and charge less?
A few times I've thought a buyer was ripped off quality-wise, but I don't look down on others' work. I just don't like it when artists do obviously rushed or careless jobs. I've seen many artists who do great personal work, but crank out lackluster commissions, and I hate that.
8. Have you ever drawn a character so fucking ridiculous that the whole time you did the commission you questioned the persons taste/sanity but really needed the money?
I've drawn characters not to my tastes, but nothing super out-there. Then again, I have a freaking sparklecat from the days before sparkledogs, so whatever. If I've kept Caishide's design this long, I obviously don't have much room to judge XD
9. Ever had a customer that was so difficult you cut contact once you were done?
Unfortunately, yes :(
He was a real creep and rrreally wanted to be my friend to an unsettling degree.
10. Ever been screwed over by a customer?
Oh yeah. The worst, though, was my very first customer. She wanted a full color marker piece of hers and her boyfriend's characters. It was a big project for a first time, so I wanted to make it more than worth it. I pulled out all the stops with my coloring and drew three small colored bonus pictures just as a thank you. They were going to be a surprise.
When I was done and showed her the scan, she disappeared. I finally tracked her down and she told me she had broken up with her boyfriend, but that she'd send payment right away. Then she dropped her DA account and has been MIA ever since.
Moral of the story? Don't be a flaky customer, you never know what you might have gotten.
I'm still bummed over it, too.

[ETA] aaannnd I'm missing my tubes of transparent paints. My bag with about $100 worth of paint in it is just gone. James and I think it must have fallen off my shelves and into the trash before the last time we emptied it. Now I'm out some serious cash and art supplies I need for my classes.
I'm offering voodoo doll con badges like the ones I did back in '06.

Posted 16 years agoCatching up
Posted 16 years agoSo yeah, I've been gone a few years. I had to sort out some fucked up personal shit in my life, and I faded away. I never meant to be gone so long, or so suddenly. I can't believe how much I miss -everyone-
I'd be pretty pissed at me.
I'm working on getting a bit of my older work up, just to have a standing gallery. I've gotten up to mid-2006, but the updates will trickle in as I get to my more recent work. With my college art classes, I just have not had the time to do fun art on the side. I miss it.
What is just flooring me is the sheer number of old friends who are adding me left and right. I can't believe everyone remembers me, even though I remember everyone.
It feels really nice to have been missed. This definitely is not the greeting I had expected.
I love you guys. I have so much to tell you and so much to get caught up on. I want to know what's going on in everyone's lives. If you have a second and don't mind sharing, could you let me in on a few recent goings on?
For those out of the loop (um, almost everyone?)
and I are engaged. Our wedding will be in about a year and a half in the fall, but we haven't set a concrete date yet.
James is also now in grad school and teaching a college English course. He's 22. Put that in perspective, losers.
... *gets in line with the losers*
Haha, fuck, when am I going to get my BA?
