New Job.
Posted 7 years agoMy IT job started going south about a year and a half ago. It really hit the low a year ago. I boke down an risked applying to a company I heard off back in my retail days. They build industrial equipment. It was listed as a basic assemply job. After not hearing from them for two weeks after I put in my application I kind of gave up on the job. Six weeks later I got an email offering an interview. Going through their interview process I found that more then one person remembered me from when I helpped them at my retail job. The best part was when I was asked, "What possition did you apply for?". This was followed by "If we hire you, you would be working on the following project...." Yeah they decided to interview me for the next higher position then I applied for.
I'm omitting what equipement I build on perpose. I will say its making my inner mad scienist giddly.

CPU designing, Frustration.
Posted 8 years agoI keep coming back to the old AMD AM2901 chip. There is a surprising amount of documentation out there including a document of making a floating point adder using this chip. If i can remember right was done for one model of PDP. The whole setup to make a cpu around the 2900 chipset itsn't to bad. AM2901 and AM2910 are not that hard to find nor are they expensive. The only chip that I haven't seen is AM2902 which is used to speed up math functions when multiple AM2901 chips are used. I recently read in a document how it can be used for value comparison. Which is handy.
I keep running in this loop. I could wire up a functional setup with these chips but that's a lot of wiring. I could learn how to program an FPGA with the circuit but, design software for that kind of chip is not intended for hobbyists. It's the same program for $70 chip or a $54,000 dollar chip. I could make a program to simulate the circuit but it really wouldn't simulate the parallelism of circuitry. Now I am adding I could design and have a pcb fabricated.

I've been looking at various modern and old ways of using AMD's old AM2901. It's not a CPU it's a chunk of a CPU. You can use this to make cpu's out of linked below is an example of how to make a opcode compatible 8080 cpu using it and its support chips. It even runs faster than an actual 8080 cpu. If you combined enough of these you could make a 1024 bit cpu.

I was tossing the idea of using an array of these for a kind of parallel processing. It's not hard feeding data into the chip or extracting it as it has a shift-in and shift-out commands. So load up sets of these with data and working with it is not hard. The snag is when you have to run a test on the data in the chips. An example of a test is "A > B". Some of the chips this will be true others it will be false. I can selectively enable or disable chips but things start to snowball if I have to do a second test. I can't see away around it.
The other thing that I was thinking about started off with noticing that: 5*7 +1 = 6*6. It doesn't seem like much at first glance but it does work out to something that might be useful. So the real equation works out to be: X*(X+2)+1 = (X+1)*(X+1) . The (X+1)*(X+1) is the interesting part. It works out to be X*X +2X +1 or in computer code X^2+2X+1. What this means is if you know the square of X you can find the square of X+1 without any hard math.
This could be useful. Not all CPUs and Microcontrollers can do real multiplication they either use a table to look up results or other tricks. Sometimes you don't have room for full tables. You could use a table of odd squares and just calculate the even ones when needed quickly using simple instructions
For example to find the 4^2:
1. Subtract 1 from 4 giving you 3 Store that as A
2. Look up the square of 3 in the table, store it as B
3. Do a shift left on A, (This is the same as multiplying by 2) Store that back in A
4. Add A to B put that in A
5. Add 1 To A and store it
This can be done very quickly and with few clock cycles on the cpu.
You can even find squares further out with a slight modification: X^2 +2(X*Y) + Y^2
If you have a multiplication table or a fast multiply algorithm and a table of squares you can find the Yth square passed X using that equation.

Desert Bus for Hope 10
Posted 9 years agoIts time once again for the annual Desert Bus for Hope Marathon. Loading Ready Run and an ever growing army of volunteers will be raising money for the Childs Play charity to provide books, games, movies and more for children's hospitals worldwide and domestic violence shelters. Last years marathon raised $683,720.00 dollars.
The crew of this marathon will be playing the game Desert Bus while also complete various challenges posed by the viewer. There will also live and silent auctions going on of handcrafted items and items donated from various video and tabletop gaming companies. There will be also guest call ins during the event. Its very entertaining time and rather hard to describe. This is something I look forward to every year.
All the fun and entertainment is going on through https://desertbus.org/ Remember if you can't donate spread the word.

Posted 9 years agoSo 3 pot pie tins, 1 package store bought pizza dough mix, 1 package instant potatoes, 1 one can of those chunky stew style soups and some milk.
Preheat oven to 350F
Mix potatoes, soup and some milk. You're more or less thickening and stretching out the soup. It should reach the consistency of normal mashed potatoes. Best tip since the potato powder sets up over time slowly add milk while preparing the pizza dough.
Prepare pizza dough as directed on packet.
After the dough has risen line the pie tins. Cook them for about 5 minutes. Add filling and continue to cook at 350F for roughly 30 minutes. Eat leftover filling while waiting since this makes 4 pies worth.
Let pies cool then eat them as well.

Factoring revisted

I've had a lot of time at my new job just to sit and think. So I've been going back and looking at my factoring method. I've realized its best ran in binary versus Decimal or Hexadecimal. I've been looking into various optimizations on that as well. The first being keeping track of the combined length of the possible factors. The number of digits in A + the number of digits in B can not be larger then the target. There needs to be three types of searched a standard one, one to prevent searching mirrored pairs (11 X 01 and 01 X 11) and one to forcing leading zeros when a factor reaches half the length of the target.
Making a distributed application out of this is getting interesting. The whole of the system is a tree search. A climber goes up a known branch, calculates if there are and branches coming off of it. If there is just one it climbs it and starts again. If there is more then it needs to choose one to climb and store the rest.
The question is how often should these branches be sent back to the server. If I send them immediately it takes more bandwidth, the sever would have an easier time sorting and when the climber gets as high as it can it will have to ask the server for a new branch.
I could have the climber hold on to a couple of hundred branches and only send the lowest priority ones if it ends up with to many. Lets say It stores up to 150 when it reaches that it sends the lowest 50 back to the server then keeps going.
The last option is just have it run for so long and submit all of its branches and ask for a high priority one. It wouldn't use as much bandwidth but the information coming into server would need to be sorted in. Sorting it isn't all that hard you look at the level the branch is at and add it to that array.
On top of all this is I need to work out what system to distribute the calculation on. If I rent CPU time from Amazon or Google there is a different approach then if I just pool together the CPUs I have access too. I should mention I have 96 cores worth of high power CPUs sitting behind me in unopened boxes.
Right now I am looking in to doing all of this using Python.

Biking FInally
Posted 9 years agoAfter a mechanical breakdown the day before Thanksgiving and a flat tire last week I am back biking. Wendell has loan me one of his bikes so we were able to do a short trip, 8 miles. My top speed was pretty good for the section we were on. Considering I haven't rode this bike before and it shifts differently then my bike I think I did pretty good.
So we start this year's tracking...

Looking into my health.

So I finally bit the bullet at the beginning of the year and made an actual doctor's appointment for the first time in over a decade. I was seeing them for a couple of issues the two main ones were to check if I did any permanent damage to my legs and feet also I noticed I wasn't fully catching my breath suddenly.
The reason I am checking on my legs for two years I've been walking to work. My weekly commute would be 25 miles and you add on another 25 - 30 miles on top of that at work. As I put them I come close to walking two marathons a week. It takes its toll. The nice thing with my new job I'm only doing 10 miles a week to commute. They didn't find any evidence that I did anything permanent. They also didn't feel that I should worry about some of the pain I get in my knee while biking.
For the breathing issue, which had been getting better slowly as waiting for my appointment they gave me an inhaler and some allergy medication. The allergy medication did almost nothing but the inhaler make me wonder if I've had a breathing issue for a long time.
Today was my three week check up to see how things are working out and go over by blood tests. Your blood pressure is good for your activity level. Your good cholesterol is low and the bad cholesterol is ok for your activity level and blood pressure. Yep everything is ok, in perspective of my activity level. Not much talk about large changes to my diet... . I am 315 pounds I've probably gained 20 or so pounds in the last year and I should only weight 230ish (186 lbs, BMI can bite my ass) but I guess with my activity level it's alright.
On a side note, I need to get my bikes running this good weather is driving me nuts.
Another side note. I once met a nurse that was asked if should would be interested in testing a weight loss drug. When they did the screening for candidates she was rejected. Even though she was overweight enough, her job made her to physically active.

Last winter/spring the company I was working at was on its last legs and as a last attempt to continue to exist they ended up closing a couple thousand stores. Then selling of a bunch of the holdings, IP rights, lesser companies, ect. They also went up for sale. Being bought out is rough. There were things we sold for years and the next it's being sent back to the warehouse. Being commission based we lost a lot of income and sales. Our shipments of stock were tiny. It seemed like we didn't get one type of shipment for at least 6 weeks. Things were bad.
So I applied to for a job at the call center up where my friend works at. Several missed connections try arrange an interview I took a risk and went to my friends place for a few days to while waiting for a response from them. Before that I had to get a valid ID mine has been expired for years. As I biked passed the place I work I worked when I was in high school. My old supervisor stopped me and "offered" me my old IT job. I was back to doing some minor IT work at a small national retailer.
I also ended up getting the interview and a job offer. So I had two job offers on the table. I went with the IT job. It doesn't pay as much but I don't have to ride a bus for 2 hours a day or move. I'm not really happy with this job yet. I feel like I'm in micro management hell, but it's a stepping stone to a better job. Or maybe a rough stone that needs to be smoothed out.

There will also live and silent auctions going on of handcrafted items and items donated from various video and tabletop gaming companies. There will be also guest call ins during the event. Its very entertaining time and rather hard to describe. This is something I look forward to every year.

500+ miles biked already
Posted 10 years agoSo I've been trying to keep an accurate log of how much biking I've done since the beginning of the year. Its all on this Journal: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/6434476/ . So since my first trip out back in mid January I've gone 578.65 miles. Going by my journal on 07/29/2014 (http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/5980364/) I was at nearly 400 miles. I'm just a tad ahead of what I did last year :)
Looking for Anthro Con plan 'B'
Posted 10 years agoCurrently I have a plan 'A' for getting to Anthro Con this year. Unfortunately this is dependant on someones health. If any one has crash space and possibly a ride share heading threw Columbus Ohio for two furs and a fursuit note me. Just for note I don't plan on expressing myself as a babyfur in the room. The other fur is not a babyfur.

Posted 10 years agoIt's in the low 50's and I've had to much sugar. All I want to do is run around in the muddy mess left by the melting snow, Go tromping around in the woods, take a bike ride to the next town, or build up my Solar Death Ray ™.
Also on a side note I came across a source for a 40 year old chip the AM2901 that is a primitive component to making a custom CPU. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_Am2900 ) Its hard to resist working on how to add it to CPU designs in ways that should not sanely be done.

Ingress and biking (already)
Posted 10 years agoLast fall I got into a game a couple of my friends have been talking about called Ingress. Its kind of a real work capture the flag game for mobile devices. Basically there are thousands if not millions of portals (capture points) around the world. You capture, defend and links them to get points. Its rather fun because these portals make you more aware of what's in and around the places you travel. Going down the highway you might never notice the underground railroad marker on the side of the road. On our way to my sisters place we found a museum that we may check out some time. The game is speed limited so its more about walking and biking around.
I've been a little antsy about getting back on my bike. We've had a couple of days of "warm" weather so I started on the trail again. The phone mount I got for my bike work rather good. And As long as there is no wind it looks like 45 F is the new low end of what I can comfortably bike in. I am going to see how close I can get to 2000 miles this year.

Michigan House Passed Bill Allowing EMTs To Refuse Treatment

Reading the text of the bill it technically can open up that and other cans of worms but it also doesn't.
"(2) Government may substantially burden a person's exercise of religion only if it demonstrates that application of the burden to that person's exercise of religion in that particular instance is both of the following:
(a) In furtherance of a compelling governmental interest.
(b) The least restrictive means of furthering that compelling governmental interest."
I honestly would not want to risk my or anyone elses life or well being on the question of "what is the government's interest?".
Edit: Collecting taxes is definitely with in government interest... no more religious tax exemptions?
