The Beast
Posted 9 years agoI was inspired to write this to explain why I love trains. It's an incident in my childhood that I've never forgotten: I call it simply "The Beast"
****
When I was young – only 4 or 5. My parents took me to see the trains. I honestly don’t remember where or when but one part still stands out in my mind. My father took me to the station for what I now know is a ‘Run By’. The locomotive and train would run past the station at speed. He was doing around 90 mph when he passed.
My father took me to the station and we found a prime spot close (but not too close) to the tracks. And we waited.
My first sensation was the rails started to sing. An odd twanging, humming sound that told of a train approaching. Then there was a faint shriek of a whistle. A light appeared in the distance and slowly got larger and brighter.
The ground started to shake – a faint vibration only felt through the soles of my feet. But it grew stronger and a pounder rumbling noise accompanied it.
The rumbling and shaking grew louder and stronger. Was it an earthquake? Would the buildings collapse? Suddenly the beast was upon us. The whole world seemed to shake and rock as the smoke and noises drowned out all else as this massive black shape blotted out the sun and hung over everything.
A blast of air like a hurricane slammed into us and sent me scurrying to the safety of my father. I was frightening, delighted, excited and terrified all at the same time.
With a roar of the whistle and the pounding of the wheels the locomotive roared past in a cloud of steam, smoke and ash. I was afraid that the whole world would collapse.
Then as suddenly as it had arrived the great beast was gone. Leaving a cloud of smoke, steam and ash behind. The rumbling slowly faded away and the grand shaking went with it.
My parents never could understand why I wasn’t afraid of thunder. Why should I be – after that?
stop whining about Trump
Posted 9 years agoOk. Let's start this right. I HATE TRUMP!. Never liked him. I am not happy with him being elected.
But having said that - to all those screaming, shouting, posting (especially facebook) protesting and rioting.
STOP WHINING! He won fair and square. We're stuck with him for 4 years and all this stupidity is not helping things. How is rioting going to help?
And seriously - Closing college for a day so the students can deal with the trauma? How stupid is that? Life goes on. And getting hysterical wont help. Protest - Yes. Posting 1000000000000 "Trump is evil and we're all going too die" messages is not helping.

Anthrocon 2009! They like us!
Posted 16 years agoI just got back from Anthrocon yesterday and it was tremendous fun! Meeting all my friends like Matt, Ryx, JL, DK and Jacob was the best part. I ate too much, walked too much, spent too much but enjoyed it all. The dealers room was packed as usual with far too much stuff to buy. What happened each day followed a pattern. Upon arrival at the comvention center we all split up and scattered to different places! The only only way we stayed in touch was with cell phones! We usually wound up meeting for dinner. then we would scatter again till we were all too tired to do anything. Then we would go back to Matts house!
One of my favorite things: During the Fursuit parade I was sitting next to a group of people who I assumed were with Anthrocon. They certainly were enjoying the parade. One man asked me "So how long have you people been coming here?" 'You people?' I looked at his badge and realized he was NOT from AC. He was from the Mensa convention up the block! They all were! As the man later explained "We're from the mensa convention but things down there are boring so we came up here!" Hehehehe I still laugh every time I think of that! It seems a lot of people came up from the Mensa convention!
I noticed that Pittsburgh seems to love us! Every store and restaurant I went into I found a furry there eating or shopping. In most of the food places I saw the staff wearing Con badges! I do realize that most of the business owners are more interested in the fact that we furries spend over $1 million dollars over the weekend. But the city does seem to honestly like us! And I like Pittsburgh :)
