I woke up with a headache and I've been shaking and feeling a "sense of impending doom" I guess you could say.
Basically I feel super stressed today and I need some time for myself.

I'm so sorry for any wait time, truly <3 I've been pretty down yesterday and today and didn't want to say anything or do anything so yesterday I drowned myself in pokemon.
I'm going to try and get myself back up to speed and see how much I can get done by the end of tomorrow.
Tonight I have an event I'm going to so work will be done for now. I might not do anything but crash when I get home but first thing in the morning I'm going to get back at it and finish what I can.
I'm so stressed with shit being thrown from all directions and problems I had caused before coming back to me now IRL.

HOW TO IMPROVE AS AN ARTIST:

How to improve your art and improve yourself as an artist, in my personal opinion anyway. This is a journal I've been wanting to type up and trying to think of for quite some time because it covers a bunch of questions I am often asked and don't really know how to answer on the spot or would take too long to explain in a text or stream or something like that...
Keep in mind these are things that I have been taught, taught myself and worked for me. I didn't go to art school, but have been given this advice by people who have. The bullet list is in no particular order, and is highly subjective. What works for one person might not work for another but I'm hoping that the majority of this list is a generalized "rule" more than an actual how to draw tutorial.
So let's jump into it.
First off, I want to say that I am by no means a professional studio artist, and as I said earlier I did not go to art school. I am 100% self taught and I am still very much learning and I still make a lot of mistakes. But I am very proud of the improvement I have shown in the last few years, and even the best of artists are always improving. The nice thing about art, all forms of art, music, photography, writing, is that no matter how "" bad"" you are or how good you are, there is ALWAYS room for improvement.
DO IT EVERY DAY
Practice makes perfect. And I don't wanna hear any of this "you sound like a broken record I've heard that dozens of times before" nonsense. You've heard it a million times because it's true. Art is something that you need to work at and practice. It's no different than learning to speak, or read, or spell, or play an instrument. The more you do it the easier it becomes and the better you become at it. If you can learn your ABCs and are able to spell and read and type at dozens of words a minute you can pick up a pencil and teach yourself to draw, or write or whatever else you want to do. The moment you stop doing it your body and mind will forget how to do it and you'll digress. It's prominent... I've gone in vacations and not drawn for a mere 6 days and when I come back to my tablet it feels foreign, and I need to warm up again. DO IT EVERY DAY. It will pay off.
STOP COMPARING
Your biggest enemy is yourself. Stop comparing yourself to other artists and other mediums. You are not them, and no matter what you do your art will never look like theirs and your writing will never sound like theirs. And that's good. You don't want to be like another artist. YOU want to be an artist. You have your own personality and your own style and your own tastes and that will all reflect in everything you do. It reflects in the way you talk or type, it will reflect in your art as well. You cannot and should not try to be like another artist, and by comparing yourself to said artist you're only dragging yourself down. Especially if you're a beginner. You cannot pick up a skill you've never had experience in before and expect to be as good as someone who's been doing that skill for 15 years. You just can't. But that shouldn't discourage you, because 15 years ago that artist you're comparing yourself too was a beginner and was learning to do that skill for the first time just like you.
REFERENCE
It's a little ironic I am putting this one under the previous bullet. "You just told me not to compare myself, why are you telling me to reference now?" Well, friend, that's because you can reference without comparing. And that's what you should be doing. Look at photographs, draw photographs, read your favorite novels, etc. Get inspired. Push your art towards a goal. Now, let me clarify. The furry fandom in specific has a huge negative stigma around referencing, and with foolish intentions. Referencing is fine, copying and tracing are not. If you're having trouble with something, it's perfectly okay to look at someone's art to see how they'd do that particular thing. However, you should not copy that artists entire image, trace the pose, steal the entire theme, etc. Referencing materials will not only help you improve, it will help you become more confident in your own abilities.
STOP EXPECTING LARGE IMPROVEMENTS IN SHORT AMOUNTS OF TIME
There isn't much to say here. It's kind of short and too the point. Stop expecting to draw like an artist who's been in the business for 30 years in a matter of days or weeks. You can't even expect that in months. If you want to draw like an artist who's been in the business for 30 years you'll have to be an artist for 30 years. It's as simple as that. Of course, some people learn faster than others. But you have to remember that improvement is not a straight line up. Realistic improvement looks like this: https://goo.gl/images/8SfP96
START REALISTIC
Study real life before trying to stylize it. How are you going to characterize something if you don't know how that something works in the real world? Let's say you want a wolf character. Draw realistic wolves. Write realistic wolves. Study them, look at photos, look at their skeletons, study their muscles. Learn their behavior, learn how they communicate. Once you're comfortable with your knowledge of REAL wolves then and only then can you draw or write a believable one, even if your style is unrealistic. This skill will also help you overcome the "generic canine face" syndrome so many people in the fandom have. You'll learn first hand how to draw a wolf skull versus a fox skull or a Doberman skull, and you'll be able to translate those shapes into something more simple, but have it still be recognizable. Unlearning toony art habits and going from toon to realism is much more difficult than making a realistic drawing toony. And as stated before, by doing this method your toony wolves and toony foxes won't look the same. They'll still look believable.
FORGET THE DETAILS (AT FIRST)
Don't start your project with small details. Start with a broad picture and flesh it out as you go along. If you spend too much time fussing over the small details your project will very quickly become cluttered and your fan base as well as yourself will loose interest. I see this so much, even in my intimate friend groups. Someone sits down to write or draw and they'll spend hours trying to get 100s of small details into a small condensed area and the rest of the image becomes a chore and thus will loose quality very quickly. While sketching and writing it's a good thing to have a rough idea, script, or thumbnail / figure drawing to go off of before you start. That way you have a clear plan and can take your time. With all subject matter you wanna start large and vague. As time goes on you'll find your image. While drawing, since that's what I'm familiar with, large vague shapes are the way to go with sketching. Blocking in large areas of soon to be characters helps layout my scene before all of the details come in. Sketching rough and loose and messy is not only great practice it helps you see errors before you flesh out details. Personally, for my high detail work I have 3-4 layers alone simply for my sketch and layout, each layer getting slightly more refined than the last.
REWARD YOURSELF
Praise yourself and show off your work. Show your friends and/or family and get feedback. Everyone loved hearing they did good, and no, it's not egotistical to be proud of your own work and compliment yourself! If you're happy with your work be happy! You created something! That alone is something to be proud of.
TAKE CRITIQUE
ALL critique. Even the stuff you don't like to hear. Now, there is a huge difference between constructive criticism and just plain being an asshole. I'm not saying to believe every asshole opinion on the internet, but I am expecting you to take critique with stride and pride. Even if you're proud of your piece, you're bound to make mistakes. And that's perfectly fine and perfectly normal and that DOES NOT mean you shouldn't be proud of it. However constructive criticism is an absolute necessity if you want to improve at all. You will not see every error you make, and you have a self-bias, you simply won't see it! An outside perspective will point things out to you that you didn't see or can't see. And you will not improve by making the same errors over and over, you have to put your ego aside and take the advice. It will help you in the long run.
FLIP YOUR CANVAS / TAKE BREAKS
Breaks are important. Don't stare at the same thing for too long! You'll start to get tunnel vision. And if you're sketching, FLIP YOUR CANVAS. There should be a button or drop down menu that allows you to mirror your canvas. DO THIS ALL THE TIME! PLEASE! Mirroring your canvas will help you see anatomical errors and things that just look off. It will help your art be more symmetrical.
LIFE DRAW AND FIGURE STUDY
Another drawing one since that's what I know best. DO figure studies and life drawings of all kinds. Not too much detail, don't do full portraits but sketch your anatomy and do you studies on landscapes and anything else you need to brush up on. Use strictly photos for this, don't use art! And if you like your studies, finish them at a later date. They'll probably be some of your best pieces!
Anyhow... that's all I can think of right now but I think that's a lot of info. And by following these myself here's the type of improvement I've had in just a few years:

I don't like leaving you all in the dark about artwork just like I wouldn't want to be left in the dark c:
I didn't get anything done yesterday because I'm an idiot and lost track of time with picking up my boyfriend from work....so instead of getting home at around 5:30 and having a small break for dinner then doing some work at 6 or later, I left at 5, got home closer to 6:30 then I made dinner, we fed our son, bathed him and put him to bed around 8 and I fell asleep.
SO, my new work schedule isn't going to work as well as I had hoped it would XD silly me!
I'm altering it a bit:
My son takes two 2 hour naps a day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon.
I'm going to try and crank out at least some sketches for other commissions or multiple finished beans during his naptime so you all don't wait <3
I also have a commission for a friend I went to college with that has to be bumped up a bit on the list because it's a christmas gift for someone and december is starting <3
PLEASE DO NOT WORRY ABOUT YOUR WAIT TIME!
I like to work on multiple pieces at once so while I'm working on some beans I'm sketching or lining another piece.
I DID take a break the other day and draw something personal simply because it helps me keep from being burned out. I hate art block and I hate when i don't draw for periods of time so I would rather set aside a moment for myself to keep myself motivated <3
Also:
We're a bit stressed with a move coming up, me not being able to find work, and my bf doesn't know if he will get paid for all of last week or just the days worked due to the holiday. His work provides paid vacation but he's still in their "probationary" period until January. MEANING that the money made from art might go to rent rather than my moving goal of $300....I'll be finding out today if he gets paid the full week or not.
I STILL have pay what you want commissions going on, a bunch of auctions, and I'm even going to set up an EBAY or something to sell some of my stuff.
I'm really hoping I find a job soon and I'm even going to resort to applying to fast food places again....even though I swore I never would go back to that.
At this point a paycheck is a paycheck.
Anyway, I didn't want to worry any of you and I would rather you know my work schedule and what's going on IRL so you don't worry about your commission <3
I think I'll ask my bf's sister to babysit today or tomorrow just so I can get work done.

Curious as to why I'm doing this?
Yesterday I attended a funeral for a good friend of mine who passed away from a seizure that caused some sort of terrible internal injury. He suffered from epilepsy and because of that, mine and many others have a bleaker life now that he's gone.
I want to be part of the change that brings a brighter future to anyone suffering, and by donating to Cure Epilepsy we can all be part of that change <3

Posted 9 years agoI just found out a friend and coworker of mine died...
He was the most beautiful person I had ever come in contact with.
He was always smiling and making jokes...I even met his Fiancee who is ALSO amazing and hilarious (gay couples usually are and it's great I love it <3 )
If I had known this would have been his last halloween....I would have done so much more.
Today I officially say God is dead or never existed.
I cannot believe in a diety that rips someone away that had so much to give.
