Another update, since I keep forgetting to check FA
Posted 10 years agoSo I just passed the six month anniversary of that dumb fall that somehow managed to trigger all sorts of hellish things and wreck all my productivity. I may have kept Precocious updating daily, but just about everything else fell WAY behind. (Not just work, but all life stuff. I rarely leave my house for anything but doctor appointments, because it's so easy for me to trigger a bad spell.) In December, things began quieting down, but these good windows still don't long, and the flare-ups that follow reduce me to useless mush all over again. Working like crazy when the pain drops below my functional threshold, I've very slowly chipped away at owed work. (No one has been forgotten!) As I write this, I'm within sight of the finish line for the Kickstarter/Badge work that should have been finished by October. (Once again, I'm so sorry, everyone!) Every time I show optimism, though, something horrible happens to me the next day, so please factor that into your hopes! (I'm on day 9 of the latest flare-up currently, though I've still been able to get a little work in.)
On the medical side, there is a procedure that could potentially do wonders for me - so of course insurance fought me hard over it. I *may* have cleared the last (pointless) hurdle, but I've started on a NEW insurance plan this week, and they might have new tricks to destroy me. Even if all goes well, it usually takes two months before I find out anything. Until I get sustained good health, I (obviously) can't open up for any new commission work.
I'm all-in with Precocious for my income, so if you'd like to help please buy some Precocious books or merchandise or my art cards and help me chip away at ever-growing medical bills. (I have some recently-made art cards to add, so nudge me if you want one of those.) There may also be a "keep Chrispy alive, so he can continue doing that thing he does" patron program coming.
I'm still hopeful to be able to debut Precocious book 4 at Anthrocon this year, and the special Precocious companion book may soon follow. (Debut at SPX?) My other con this year will be Fur The More, since it's 10 minutes from my brother's house now, and always fun to table at.
I really have no idea how the next few months will play out, but I'll fight like hell to do as much awesome stuff as I can!

I forgot to post health updates here! Sorry!
Posted 11 years agoIn short: Things got really REALLY horrible through all of October and November, but began to clear up in December. Unfortunately, a lot of the damage done through the fall (and the subsequent flare-ups of other things likely brought on by the fall) remains and may be my new normal - but as long as I'm below a certain pain threshold I can work. That's where I've been for a few weeks, and I'm grateful to have what I have.
Catch-up is happening, slowly but steadily. I had four months in which I was mostly useless, so there's a lot to tackle. Here's a rundown:
-I will not miss any Precocious updates. Not only do I need to be active to stay on the map, but it's what motivates me - and something I can do when I'm sick and shaky. Wobbly lines in the comic only hurt me. Wobbly paid work hurts people who trusted me, and that's unacceptable.
-I still have take-home badges from Anthrocon to finish. (I know, I know...) They're all drawn and inked at this point. Coloring and mailing isn't too far off.
-I'm around 75% done with Kickstarter fulfillment. Art-based rewards are the ones taking the longest, as you'd expect. I do a pile of them every week. The next group will be the remaining handful of original comic claims and doll orders.
-For other Kickstarter stuff, I still have a bonus story to draw, and an "I'm sorry" charm set will be sent later to backers who've had to wait. In time, guys. In time.
-I have sneaked in some time to begin doing prep for Precocious book 4. There's hope I could catch up in time to get it all together on schedule. I sorta need to do paid comic work to live, so I'm motivated. (And I *really* want to create that companion book!)
-More stuff I'm forgetting about right now, because there's always more stuff.
I'm chipping away at everything here and there. It can feel like no progress since it's such a small dent each time, but it's getting done. I'm slower than I was before the fall, but I'm getting faster. Plus, since I'm now so broken that I can't really leave the house, I have nothing else to do but work! Everything is a top priority, so focusing on one task just annoys people waiting on another task. It's an unwinnable situation, so I'll try to be efficient and work on what I can, when I can.

Another State of the Chrispy Update
Posted 11 years agoThis is another check-in here to say I'm still battling fall-out from my weird health issues. (If I could go back in time, I'd tell past me that if every oral surgeon but one in town tells you it'll be a month+ of waiting, and the one says, "We can take you tomorrow!" there is probably a reason no one was going to that one doctor.)
I'm apparently allergic to optimism, as any time I make a statement that things are looking up, something terrible happens to me within 24 hours. So now I'll say I'm horrible and dying forever no matter what! Sometimes I am dying faster. Sometimes I am dying slower. Ideally I am dying in the standard "every day is a day closer to death by natural causes at an old age" rate, but WE SHALL SEE!
I'm trying new meds for the latest setback (they'll take a week to kick in) and plugging away best as I can. I'm not gonna miss any comic updates, and I'll grind at what I can with the good hours that remain. Other delays are gonna involve me traveling. Since I can work anywhere I have a drawing space, scanner and internet connection, I'm on call for some family issues in DC. Mostly that means I won't have access to commission or packing supplies every other week.
I'm obviously working and drawing, but I'm slower and it's hard to make a big dent in a backlog if your pace is below-average. Hopefully I can coast on my (previous) reputation of dedication and reliability a little longer and get some understanding/forgiveness. (And part of the slowness is that I've been working to add a little extra to the camp comic story and all delayed orders.)
I won't give you a timetable at this point, and I won't make any big promises. (See the second paragraph for why!) I'll just keep going until everyone is happy again!

Update: I broke myself!
Posted 11 years agoOH, SO THIS IS WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE IN YOUR MID-30'S
Last week I was supposed to finish all my Anthrocon take-homes and send them off. I set the cards on the table, fired up the computer for refs, leaned back in my chair... and kept on going back until I smacked into the ground. 99 of 100 times, that would only hurt my pride, but I'm LUCKY and managed to bruise/strain something in my lower back. The result is that I'm on bed rest for a while, and whenever I do get up I have a limited window before darkness descends.
Considering August is my busiest work month of the year, this is really sucky, but I'm squeezing in drawing when I can. (I do have to put the comic first, since my buffer has shrunk due to this.) I'm slower now, but hopefully will be healed enough in a week to get back to the grind. Anyway, this is why I've been so silent on social media recently and why packages aren't going out as early as I'd hoped. A two-week delay isn't the end of the world, but it's huge for someone like me, who is normally reliably quick on turnaround.

2014 Convention Calendar!
Posted 11 years agoSince I rarely post journals, I might as well make the one on display something useful! These are the cons I'll be tabling at this year, and I hope to see lots of you during my travels!
Fur The 'More - March 14-16 - Baltimore, MD
This is a second-year con that was a blast to show at last year! If you are in the area, I highly encourage you to come check it out. I've been looking for a solid local-ish furry con I can make my home, and this one has an amazing staff and a wonderful vibe to it. (And it's 20 minutes from one of my best friends' apartment, so I get a cherished visit in as long as I keep attending!)
Furry Weekend Atlanta - March 20-23 - Atlanta, GA
The birthday con! I'm introducing Becca of http://nattosoup.tumblr.com/ to the furry con scene, and we both have birthdays that week. (She's the 19th and I'm the 24th, so we *just* miss out on exact days.) This means you must be EXTRA NICE to us! This is also my return to the first con I ever tabled at. I don't live in Georgia anymore, so FWA is usually too out of my way to attend, but this year we're making it an event! Treat us well, however, and you might lock me in for the future!
Awesome Con DC - April 18-20 - Washington, DC
Look, another "home" con for me! This is my first year showing at Awesome Con. People who attended it last year had nothing but good stuff to say, so I'm really excited about it! If my hometown peeps don't show up to cheer me on, I'll be so distressed! (It also looks like a fairly powerful con for fandoms - what a guest list! - so there's lots to amuse you when you aren't fawning over me.)
Anthrocon - July 3-6 - Pittsburgh, PA
This is the big special furry con, and also marks the estimated debut of Precocious' third book! This is always a super-fun even for me. I cherish my time with my cartoonist buddies - our hotel room alone will have the combined powers of me, Mat of Badly Drawn Kitties and the Bittersweet Candy Bowl team - and I love checking in with all my con regulars. Even if I keep getting sick and die before this, my stuffed corpse will attend and be propped up at the table. IT WILL BE MY FINAL WISH!
Mechacon - August 1-3 - New Orleans, LA
After I drag Becca to a furry con, she's taking me to her hometown con, along with lots of my SCAD buddies. I'm really looking forward to this one. I've heard nothing but glowing things about the con itself, and it is only enhanced by it being New Orleans once I walk out the doors!

Anthrocon Info! Come be my friend!
Posted 12 years agoI guess it's my turn to do this now!
Dates attending:
I'm arrive on Thursday the 4th, leaving Monday.
Rooming with:
Mat Sherer of Badly Drawn Kitties. (This does mean we can provide crash space to some, but it's an only-if-you're-cool thing.)
How do you want to be addressed:
Chrispy is the default. Any non-slur is fine. I'm just happy if someone wants to talk to me. *sniff*
Gender:
Dude.
Age:
33
Appearance:
Typical cartoonist model 3C. 5'10", 172 lbs, long brown hair, glasses, bit o' beard, wearing the same nice-ish shirts I always wear at cons. Photo here: http://chrispco.blogspot.com/
Where can I find you?
I'll be at table N19 (in the right front corner) of the Dealer's Den most of the time. During off hour, I'll likely be 5th-wheeling with some close-knit group of friends, working on commissions somewhere or dying alone in my room. (Depends on if my doctors choose to medicate me for this trip.)
Purpose for attending?
Debuting Precocious book two, and selling other fancy things! Also want to start making more art friends, as it's about time for me to stop being so shy about this stuff.
Do you draw commissions?
I intend to! I *love* doing table commissions. Since I'll be fighting this pain condition, likely without much medical help, I'll be much slower than usual and won't take on as many as normal, but I'll do what I can! (See me early!)
Do you do requests?
My health isn't good, so I don't have the full energy to draw freebie stuff on top of commissions.
Do you do trades?
I'd like to do some art/book trades with some dealer types! I can be tempted by others, but remember I'm facing lots of medical bills this year. Gotta focus on earning what I can.
What merchandise are you offering?
Precocious books one and two will be available. I will be doing table commissions; mostly badges and half-page pieces. I'll have artist trading cards, original artwork and original comic pages for sale too! (If you want an original page, let me know which one so I can be sure to bring it.) Buttons, charms, sketch cards and magnets will also be there!
Art in the art show?
Not this year.
Can I talk to you?
Absolutely! I'm happy to chat with everyone. Just remember that I'm a dealer, so I will have to pop out of the conversation at times to greet folks, make sales and take commissions. It's not a slight, we all gotta do it to make up the costs of the table.
Can I take pictures of you?
Sure. Makes me feel like a big man. (Just ask first, and no sliding the camera under the bathroom stall. Again.)
Can I touch/hug/cuddle you?
Assume no. You may ask, but assume no even if you ask. If you are in a fursuit, assume hell no.
Can I hang out with you?
Always a possibility! I won't know my schedule/health situation until next week, but you can certainly ask.
Do you go to parties?
If I'm at a party, it's because I'm severely ill and I've stumble into the wrong room. Please call an ambulance. (During off hours, I'll either be arting hard, or resting so I can art hard later. Or, uh, making sure the flowers in my Animal Crossing town don't die.)
What's the best way to reach you?
Come by the table in the dealer's den!
Daily activities:
Wake, worry, eat, draw forever, skip lunch, pray someone brings me food, draw forever again, dinner with peeps. draw forever, panic attack, sedation, sleep.
Can I buy you/bring you things?
Yes. Yes! SOMETIMES THAT IS THE ONLY WAY I CAN EAT! Fancy candy is a great way to my heart (non-US people bringing their special candy get put on the "don't kill" list) and I'm still waiting for someone to bring me some C4! (That is, a C4 Copic sketch marker. I refuse to buy one for myself.)
Anything else?
I'm extra-fragile this year. Normally I adore grinding out art like a madman at conventions, but if I try that this year I may end up in the emergency room. There may be some down hours for me, and I apologize in advance if it interferes with a chance at a commission. This also means morale boosting is even more vital! Say nice things to me! Throw money at me! Otherwise I'll cry.

Midwest Furfest hotel space?
Posted 12 years agoGood news: I got a table for MWFF this year! Very excited, as last year it was my best con. Great energy and people there!
Bad news: Con folks lost control a bit on pre-reg and opened the hotel to the public before they had dealer stuff ready, which means rooms are sold out on Thursday night, aka dealer setup day. So I have to figure out what to do now. If any artists grabbed a room early on speculation, would you like to adopt me?
I realize I'm largely unknown in the fandom still, and very few dealers follow me here, but if anyone who does read this also reads journals from other dealers talking about open room spots - help make an art connection? I can even return the rooming favor if art folks need a room for Anthrocon or FurFright!
I prefer rooming with artists/dealers, because cons are business for us and many of us keep quiet grandma hours to stay fresh! My typical con adventure so far is to show up, art all day, have dinner with friends, art all night, repeat.
I'm really looking forward to the end of the year. I plan on being well, and rocking cons with my new books and adorable charms! Maybe even some Precocious dollies - although the best bet to grab those things is to go through the book two preorder Kickstarter. Kickstarter link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects.....cocious-book-2

Fur The 'More
Posted 12 years agoIf anyone will be around, I'll be tabling in the dealer's room at Fur The 'More on Saturday and Sunday. http://www.furthemore.org/
If you've been following along, you'll know this presents your first chance to get commissions from me this year. I'm only doing small stuff, as I'm by no means well, but medication should allow me to produce table commissions at my usual work level! I'm aiming to be there the full time all Saturday and Sunday, although I reserve the right to bail if my head gets explodey. (I decided to bail out of Friday
My next con after that is Anthrocon, followed by Connecticon, Intervention, SPX and Furfright. (I'm not sure what the deal is with Midwest Furfest. Did they seriously sell out of hotel space on setup day before even opening dealer registration? It was my best con last year, so I hope I don't miss out this time around.)
Dates and links for the cons can be found at the bottom of this page: http://www.precociouscomic.com/page/merch

Nominated for an Ursa Major!
Posted 12 years agoSo it seems Precocious is a finalist for Best Comic Strip with the Ursa Majors. That's pretty cool!
If you feel like giving me some support, please go sign up and vote! http://ursamajorawards.org/voting2012/
(The folks in charge have requested that I ask you all to vote in as many categories as you can, so be good and contribute!)
I gotta say, this was quite a surprise. I don't check my stats much these days, but the Ursa Major site stuck with me, because whenever it showed up on my referrals, it was always just one person visiting, who immediately left without reading anything. Maybe that person had some excellent clout? However it happened, I'm honored!
If you feel like giving me some support, please go sign up and vote! http://ursamajorawards.org/voting2012/

I'm being silly over on Tumblr
Posted 13 years agoI don't really know how to use Tumblr, nor do I have much of a liking for it... SO THAT MEANS I DON'T CARE HOW SILLY I GET OVER THERE!
I'm posting fanart stuff - which I usually avoid drawing - and taking sketchbook/warm-up drawing requests. (Use the ask box.)
Anyway, you can go check it out. And I'm sorry for being stupid over there.

Chrispmas Giveaway Contest #4
Posted 13 years agoHaha, so my announcements have slowed down because my jaw's taken a turn for the worse again. It's very frustrating, as talking makes things worse and that means no streaming. (Unless folks want a mute stream.) I'll try consulting my dentist, when her office opens up again next week, and see if she can help more than the oral surgeon did. (I have to see her anyway for EVEN MORE DENTAL WORK!)
Anyway, the reason I'm here is because contests are still happening! Today is a double-dose of prizes. Anyone who comments on today's 2012/12/27 comic is entered, and will also determine a *second* winner, as it is Thoughtful Thursday. Read more about it here: http://chrispco.blogspot.com/2012/1.....iveaway-4.html
There's another contest tomorrow, so check the Precocious front page, or the blog, at midnight!

Chrispmas Giveaway Contest #2!
Posted 13 years agoIt's December 25th! That means the time is finally here. You can enter part two of my Chrispmas contest!
Find it here: http://chrispco.blogspot.com/2012/1.....iveaway-2.html
When I wrote that post, I was expecting some cute stories and LOTS of cat pics. But, man, how I don't feel so bad about being all ego-y. It's been a rough night, and I'll take my good cheer, even if it's begged and bribed!
Hope you all have a delightful day!

Chrispmas Giveaway Week!
Posted 13 years agoI wasn't able to do my Santa Chrisp streaming this week, due to continued dental hell and head explodiness, so instead I'm doing my holiday giveaway via little contests every weekday. The first context begins at midnight! Find all updates on Precocious's front page, or over on my blog here: http://chrispco.blogspot.com/
So let's see if I can motivate people to abandon their families to be silly and get some free art!
So, yeah, read Precocious and ignore your family! http://www.precociouscomic.com/

Posting commissions I drew for you. (I'm for it!)
Posted 13 years agoI don't really know much of the ways of FA culture. There could be established community rules, written or unwritten about it, but here's my take:
If I made art for you, I'm happy if you post it to your account as well. I don't have much of a reach in the furry community yet. This has been the first year I've been active on this site with art - and I still haven't done much for the social aspect of things. (Because I don't socialize with *anyone* online these days.) If you like what I do, and think I'm worth it, a signal boost is always good.
You all have different groups of watchers - often far more of them than I do! - so if you post art I made for you it reaches many more new eyes than it would be in the 5 second window my art sits on the front page after posting, or even from your favs list. I'll be pushing the illustration angle more in the new year, and the more eyes that see my offerings and promotions, the better!
Also, I often forget to take pics and scans of art I do - especially when I'm busy at conventions - so sometimes I don't have a record of art I've done for me to share. If you post it, I get to fav it and keep a link to my stuff for future reference. (Yes, my favs are pure vanity. I'm a jerk like that.)
If you don't want to clog up your gallery with art that's not yours, there's the old trick of posting something so it pops up on everyone's dashboard, then moving it to scraps to get it out of the way.
All I ask is that you credit me when posting the art and add a link back to my FA account. (You can link to Precocious too, if you want - as new eyes are always need there too, but it's not necessary.)
Thanks to all who read this! I know how easy it is to skip journals. I appreciate you all so much!

*Art giveaway!* Chrispmas stream, Saturday, Dec 8, 4pm EST
Posted 13 years agoDecember 8th is the first day of Chrispmas, which is a time of giving when the giving is good! To celebrate, I'm doing a bonus stream and giving away free art to one lucky person who stops by to say hi!
I'm starting at 4pm Eastern time, because I want to give readers in Europe a chance to watch streams during normal human hours. The plan is to draw two art cards and finish up the next Copper Road, which I'll post after the stream ends. The stream will run for 3-4 hours, and at some point I'll give away an art card to one of my watchers. More info can be found here: http://chrispco.blogspot.com/2012/1.....g-dec-8th.html
My Ustream page is here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-sycophant
Hope to see you there!

December commissions/streaming/plans
Posted 13 years agoI have a busy month ahead of me - made busier thanks to a few weeks of dental hell! (Had the troublemaker tooth extracted today, and I hope to be up and functioning by Sunday night - 'cause I kinda have no comic done for Monday yet.)
Let's start on the commission and streaming front, as the two are linked. I'll be taking one day a week to work on commissions - half the day for sketches, half for the live stream. Streams usually last 4-5 hours, so you can pop in throughout the nights to see what's up.
The next steam is Tuesday, Dec 4th. 7pm start - I'll start with an art card commission, move into a full-page commission for SirKain and draw art cards by request to fill any remaining time.
After that, I expect the next stream on Thursday the 15th. Keep watch over Precocious' front page (I try to post warning around 48 hours before the stream) or the Ustream page for details. (Although, at the moment of writing this, Ustream's scheduler isn't working properly. Trust the dates I put above!)
I *will* be doing a Chrispmas stream! More details on that as we get closer. Consider yourself teased.
The reason I keep commissions to one day a week is because I need the rest of the time for Precocious. The buffer is only at one day right now, and I'm supposed to be putting book two together in December. The tooth thing, again, wrecked my scheduled, but I can still have it all ready in time for the book two preorder and an Anthrocon release.
The big casualty of the scheduling jam is the website. The cast page redesign only has the new art done, and won't have the rest figure out for a while. Lots of internal pages need tweaks, I also want to redo my top banner at least, but everyone I need for that is as busy as me - so it's on the back burner. It drives me nuts to not be able to do everything I want, but all the important stuff must get proper attention first.
This will be my busiest month ever - but it should also be one of the best!

Brief Midwest Furfest reaction post! Happy times!
Posted 13 years agoThis is my "I am back!" post so I can be smug and rub my awesome time in the faces of all who could go and experience the bliss! Love me!
And it was such an awesome time! This is my first year of dealing and interacting with the fandom, so I've always felt somewhat on the outside. (Most of that is me, because bouncing around forums and huggy extroversion isn't my normal way.) At Midwest, everyone who came by was so amazing and welcoming and enthusiastic about this outsider's art! This con made me feel like I can keep with this path and do OK. Thanks to every single person who came by!
I may put up another, longer post later - or I might save that one for my sketch blog. http://chrispco.blogspot.com/

Midwest Furfest - It is happening!
Posted 13 years agoDespite things getting wacky, I'm committed and I'm coming!
I will have a table, although I don't know which table number it is yet, and I will be locked in there to sell sell sell! (Seriously, gotta sell to offset travel expenses.) Mat of Badly Drawn Kitties will be hanging with me, being my table slave.
MFF is being held at the O'Hare Hyatt Regency in Chicago, Nov 16-18. It's not too late to commit to visiting and getting art from me! There are room share forums on the MFF site to help find you hotel space. (Heck, you may end up being *my* roomie if you go that route.)
MFF site: https://www.furfest.org/
Mat's site: http://badlydrawnkitties.com/
More about art offerings as we get nearer. I'll be doing some streaming this week to draw portfolio stuff. I know one's happening Thursday night. More depending on how good I am at getting Precocious ahead.

Friday afternoon streaming! WheneverPM Eastern
Posted 13 years agoSo, like, in less than an hour. Drawing art cards until I die on camera, scarring all viewers for life. Come! Be ruined!
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-sycophant
UPDATE: Thursday's stream is over, but more is coming tomorrow. I'll stream in the afternoon when I'm done running errands. Not sure of the time, but I'll try to remember to post about it. Since... uh... people always come when I post here? *shrug*

Midwest FurFest - I need a room! Help!
Posted 13 years agoSo, the folks I was staying with had to bail on MFF, taking their hotel reservation with them, and now I'm lost and scared. I need a place to sleep!
I want to ask every artist I know for floor space to crash on... but it turns out I know very few artists going to MFF. If *you* know someone going, can you ask on my behalf?
I'm still holding out hope for artist space, because cons are very different for dealers, as opposed to attendees. I'm hauling around expensive supplies, and I need to get my sleep in a safe, non-party room.
If I have to scour some roomshare boards, I will, but I'm still hoping for someone to swoop in and save me.
I'm scheduled to arrive at MFF Thursday afternoon and leave Sunday evening.
My email is chrispco[at]yahoo.com

Thursday streaming! Tonight, 8pm Eastern time
Posted 13 years agohttp://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-sycophant
I'm drawing art cards, doing bonus art for Precocious book 2 and chatting it up with people!
(And now let's see if I can remember to put up my next news post once this stream is over.)

More playing around with markers. Three paid artist trading cards for tonight's stream, with some room for requests.
On Friday it's mostly requests for now - Anyone want to commission a badge/ATC/page for Friday's stream? - maybe with a Copper Road or some Precocious bonus art.

Saturday streaming - 4PM EDT
Posted 13 years agoSo some brit folks can join in!
Still a bumbling mess on the streams, but the chat room is fun times! Going to focus mostly on art cards, as the limits of my current set-up means it's hard to me to watercolor in the camera's range.
Come chat with me! Give me streaming advice! http://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-sycophant

I'll be working on artist trading cards and a watercolor or two.
