Drawing stuff, again
Posted 15 years agoI'm thinking about using the copy of Adobe Illustrator CS 5 I have on my computer to start drawing things like spaceships, but I can't decide if I want to or not. It would be closer to a plan-view line-drawing than anything more elegant, but I can see where it has appeal (like the people who draw things all the time like that on here).
If I did they'd be my unique creations, not regurgitating Star Wars or Star Trek design features, but does anybody have ideas of what might be cool? For starters I'm thinking about making designs with GURPS Spaceships and then drawing a 3-view plan of the ship.
Anybody find the idea interesting at all?

Sick cat, update
Posted 15 years agoWell the vet says all she has is a kidney infection and gave me some meds, but she hasn't been on them long enough to see if it's helping. She's still just laying there looking unhappy.

Posted 15 years agoMy cat is apparently very sick. I'm not sure what, but it could be as "simple" as a kidney or UT infection. She barely walks, picking her up causes her to meow in pain, and when I placed her on my bed she peed on it, but she's awake and alert.
A friend is going to help me pay for a routine vet visit to get her in the door to see what's wrong, but after that I have no way of paying for treatment unless it's relatively cheap. I barely scrape by as-is, much less with a sudden expense like this. I have no credit cards I could put it on and getting one is a crap shoot these days (plus take weeks I don't have).
AND to top it all off, since I'm not an artist no one ever seems willing to want to buy commissions from a writer.
If you ARE willing to help me out, you can PayPal me on panton41[at]gmail.com or we can arrange something else. In return, I could figure something out, though it would probably involve writing or web design.
If you can't help monetarily, prayers and offerings to Freya, the Norse goddess who is connected to cats would be appreciated. Flowers, sweet wines, fresh strawberries, sweet foods - amber and gold if you're really up to it.

Sleep deprivation for "fun" and lack of profit
Posted 15 years agoI've had insomnia for two days now (9 hours of sleep in about 72 hours) and I'm about to go to bed after having to beg to come home from my industrial style job, but a few fun comments.
1) Right now at about 30 hours of no sleep I feel like I've downed a 6 pack of a good, strong stout. Cheap buzz without the puking...
2) If insomnia is a beautiful maiden singing you into her loving tender arms (think Liv Tyler in Lord of the Rings, but being blond and wearing Galadrial's dress) then insomnia is Kathy Bates from Misery coming at you only wearing a smile and an 18" strap-on and a jar of Crisco.
3) Always remember to take you meds boys and girls or THIS will happen to you!
4) DON'T DATE ROBOTS!
5) Fish cannot sing Wager and a puffer fish dressed like a Valkyrie is right out...
6) There is NO #6.

But, given those two facts, I figure I can be a nice guy friend and see what happens. You never know when break ups happen and there's a Seinfeld episode that discusses that thought.

Thoughts on the "Then and Now Meme"
Posted 15 years agoThe sad thing is after seeing so many that I'd be happy being able to draw as good as most people's "before" picture.
Now, when it comes to writing, I have definitely improved and changed over the years, but it's not as easy to display side-by-side like that.

Human/Furry relationships
Posted 15 years agoThe most popular picture on my Fur Affinity account is “Out By the Gates” by Grymm Badger that depicts my characters, a human named Brian and a Vixen named Susanne kissing. The reason why is pretty clear from the comments on it, that depicting a Human/Furry relationship is popular. However, this brings up a good question about why is it so popular? Which of the pair does the viewer identify with? If the genders were reversed would the appeal still be there with that viewer, i.e. is it the concept in general and not the individuals involved? Does involve wish-fulfillment, or simply aesthetics of the pair? If the pair were both human (or near human) or both Furry would it have the same impact?
    Anyone interested in me posting my Terrae note?
Posted 15 years agoI've been trying to edit my Terrae notes into an appendix, but there's a heck of a lot being cut out simply because they're not appendix-type material. So, with that in mind, would anyone be interested in seeing this information being left out? Mind you, much of it is in the Terrae RPG material, but there's still a bit that isn't. So, is anyone interested enough to make it work getting it all together and posting it on here?
    Thinking of drawing again, any tips?
Posted 15 years agoWay back in the olden days when Dinosaurs roamed the airwaves I draw like other red-blooded American boy does. As time passed I actually got halfway decent at it, keeping sketch and drawing journals and spending good money on art supplies. Of course I wrote, too, something I'd done since I was 7yo and I also spent long hours honing those skills, too.
Now way back even further when wood paneling was all the rage for video game systems I was born a couple months early, which resulted in a nasty little thing called cerebral palsy, which those of you who know Farrelmoon know a bit about. Now her problems with it make me even saying I have it almost seem laughable. My symptoms manifest as a stride that wears out shoes early, horrible handwriting and low upper body strength. Now while the muscles used in drawing are different than those used in handwriting there's still the fact I have trouble with certain artistic skills.
Back to the oh-so far off year of Twwwoooo Thousssaaand (and three) I discovered Furries and started expanding on my artistic and writing repertoire. Eventually that lead to my developing portions of my current Terrae cast. Of course I attempted to draw Susanne and even began on a model sheet for her.
Well then I got onto the VCL and decided to try to apply. Long story sort I was told to improve my art skills but my writing was A-OK. So I focused my efforts on improving my writing and since I only recall having finished drawing a single picture.
Which leads me to today. I want to get back into drawing, just to do it and because I'm a poor (read cheap) bastard who doesn't want to shell out good money for a pictures of the nudie boobens I write about. (No to mention give me a reason to hook up the scanner I own but never use.)
So what should I do to jumpstart my hand-eye coordination and what kinds of supplies should I get for this? Read the above paragraph to understand my money issues, so no saying spend umpteen dollars on pencils and high-quality paper when I might get bored with the idea and change my mind in a few days.
Let me add, telling me to invest in a high quality image editing program is done and done. Besides the fact the GIMP really is a decent program I have a totally legal copy of Adobe Design Premium CS4 already installed and I'll probably have the CS5 version before the month is over. My university has a "deal" with Adobe where I can get it for free (other than $1,200 of tuition).

Terrae story update: 19 April 2010
Posted 15 years agoFixed a bunch of errors caused by using MS Word master documents. I'm moving to a model using Acrobat Pro "Convert Supported Content to PDF" and converting and combining them that way.
Done:
Fixed "typesetting" issues.
Renamed Chigo section to "Wellstone Abbey"
Need to do:
Edit the Enandoplas chapters for content. The section is more than 150 pages long and very little actually happens. I can probably trim 25 percent out and be fine. Don't be surprised if it suddenly goes from 150 pages to 120 or even 100. The "angry red pen" will be out...
Create title page and section headers in InDesign to replace buggy and ugly MS Word ones.
Remove all underlines and replace with italics. Originally done to help with possible submission to a publisher. Now I'm planning on setting up POD or something similar if fans want a paper copy.
Finish more chapters, further refine the Appendix, make a loose outline for what happens next.
Behind the scenes:
Revise or write new character summaries for all major characters.
Unify and revise setting notes.
Figure out what to name more of the gods and goddesses. I have a theme, but I'd also like the break from it, too.
Figure out how the fuck Brian got there in the first place. I have an idea involving being to close to a malfunctioning prototype particle accelerator weapon, but that idea is a handwavium, Philadelphia Experiment kind of deus ex machina. I really don't like it since if high-energy particle collisions could do that kind of thing we'd be losing astronauts and high-altitude flights left and right. Another idea might involve "weirds science" research at the Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville. (Basically I want to avoid outright magic...)
Further work on the Terrae RPG, which can help with developing the setting.
Re-organize the folder hierarchy inside of Documents. It's grown out of control and makes no sense. I'm constantly going all over to update stuff and some folders contain more than just what their label says. I'm anal retentive, but organization is key to efficiently doing things.

    SAD, school, work and stress
Posted 15 years agoSince the seasons changed I've noticed my mood is improving and I think I'm getting over a case of Seasonal Affective Disorder. I'm bipolar so it's not a stretch and working third shift doesn't help, either. I need to start getting out in the sun more and enjoying the weather, but it's not easy when bedtime is 8 p.m. and "morning" is 3 a.m.
Having SAD means that during this last semester I haven't done as well as I needed to. Both classes I'm taking right now I've taken before and I don't think I could take again if I don't pass and need to. (And "passing" means a C or better.) And if I don't pass them I probably won't just not be able to graduate on schedule, but likely not at all.
Add on that having SAD meant I wasn't doing as well at work as I'd like. Everything worked out well in the end, but for a couple weeks I was worried about losing my job to my own damn fault. Obviously being worried about your job doesn't help with going to school.
Which has obviously led to me being stressed out. I don't have a psychiatrist appointment until May, and even if I rescheduled it would still mean a few weeks until I can get in. I have some stress pills, but I'd rather not take them if I can avoid it. (For that matter when I was taking them a few weeks ago I did feel better.)
