Some advice for drawing massive hyper
Posted 13 years agoGot into a bit of a back and forth with an artist over some comments I left on an image, and wrote them a note with some advice for drawing the larger amounts of hyper. Thought it might be a bit of writing that other people may want to avail of, so I've edited it a bit to be less specific to their work. The image the comments are geared towards is of a particularly 'gifted' female character sitting on a bench.
I do not think that I'm the one to give all of your advice or tips, or even many of them. I can only try to point out a few things that might spark you to look at how you do other things. I hope that you'll at least read what I put together than think about some of it.
When it comes to a feeling of weight, consider this. If a hugely busty character is sitting down on a bench, then as the pose is set up, it should play as if her breasts are sitting on either side of her on the bench, spilling over the edge but they're still more beside and in front of her. Consider that the bench would be pushing up against the bottom, causing them to flatten out on the bottom and mound up somewhat, but since they are spilling over the edge there is also going to be a section with a more familiar hanging mass. Given the positioning, if the cleavage is more open her legs should be more visible in the underside of her cleavage given that the breasts are a rounded body. Were her breasts more pushed together, i.e. a tighter top, that wouldn't be the case but would instead be spilling out over the thighs while the top would probably cause more muffin top in the breasts. Multiple things to consider there so far as physics.
From my own experience, at the sizes we're drawing, breasts and balls behave almost exactly the same, and a lot of the drawing techniques for one can be used for the other. Any lessons about how weight sits, shifts, and how the body can push into one can be easily applied to the other. They are for our purposes, large mostly spherical liquid filled masses. All that's really different is where they attach to the body.
Case in point, the above pose could easily be turned into a hyper male pic with a change of the breasts to not have a top cutting into them, and a tone matching the pants painted overtop. So learning to draw one better doesn't mean you're necessarily being negligent to the other.
I would suggest, if you've never thought of it before, picking up just a plain $2 bag of party balloons and keeping them handy. They're easy, quick, and most of all innocuous references for just about any size of breast or ball you want to draw, that can be pushed and pressed to figure out how what you're drawing would be pushed and pressed. And the longer sausage ones are good for posing a shaft too. An "Artist's Anatomy" type of textbook would probably be a worthy investment too, I keep mine on my drawing desk for quick references. Even if we cover up a lot of the body with what we draw, having a solid base helps for the not so massive drawings, and to give the massive drawings a proper base.
If you've read through this, then I hope I've at least given you something to think about that will help your art improve.

Preparations (Possible commission openings)
Posted 13 years agoHokai. My provincial union looks like in about two weeks it's going to have us walk out on strike. This is a massive pile of suck, and is going to be very costly for a dragon, as average strike length when they've gone out before is about 4 weeks, and strike pay is 1/4 of normal pay. So, in preparation I am going to start taking some names for possible commission slots, in the event this does happen. Planned slots are going to be for the quick $5 heads like I was doing before (including offering them again to the people who I missed the first time around) as well as more sketchy $20 full body single character pieces. I will play with just these two for the moment, though there is the possiblity of more finished work. There is also the possibility of this strike not happening and the slots either getting backburnered or simply done at a much slower pace as RL work allows.
For the moment, note me if you're interested and I'll get a list going. Will update as I have information.

Sorry about the Stream
Posted 13 years agoSorry to everyone who came to the stream, I was not in good form tonight. Thanks for sticking it out, even if there wasn't anything of substance done on my part.
Hopefully the next one will be better.

Battlefield 3 Platoon
Posted 14 years agoTo anyone who's picked up Battlefield 3, I've created a "FurAffinity" platoon. Crosspost if you'd like, I'll be accepting requests from whoever wants to join once I'm off work.
Thank you for the birthday wishes
Posted 14 years agoThanks to everyone who left me a birthday wish, I spent the weekend home with family so I wasn't about to put up anything about it, or to reply to them on the day of. They're much appreciated.

Update
Posted 14 years agoStill mending. I've gotten back the use of my left side for the most part, however I still don't have all the feeling back in my left hand. Been trying to get back to sitting my meditation again, but been finding that I'm having a particularly hard time sitting with my headspace lately.
Art has blocked up good, the past two times I've tried to draw I've come away from it downright angry and I can't pin down exactly why. I know that I have issues with getting the art 'right', both my inability to do so and that I still expect myself to do so, but it's to a fierce point where I want to rip up the page/delete the file outright. And aside from the rage at the face value 'not getting it right', there's something in the back of my head saying there's more to it and I can't get at it. Maybe more sitting will help. Have a gut feeling the two problems are one and the same.
Other than that, settling into the new place but finding that I regret the move, even after less than a month. Hoping that will pass.

On the mend
Posted 14 years agoStill recovering from my hospital visit last week, ended up with a pinched nerve in my neck that's left my left side pretty much useless and hurting. Doubly bad since I'm ambidextrous, but not in the 'use either side equally' manner, more that I do half or better of things left handedly.
Anyways. Keeping myself hopped up on Aleve until things calm down enough where I can sit in the non emerge clinic for 4 hours to get a doc prescription for some massage or whatnot to help get rid of the problem. I'll finish off the head commissions once I can use my hand as more than a hook again. The few bigger pieces I owe will get started once the few remaining heads get done.

On hiatus
Posted 14 years agoSorry to the people who I haven't done the head commissions for. Hadn't been myself the past couple of days and ended up in the hospital today. Shouldn't be serious but will mean I need some rest for a few days, so will be further off the grid than normal.
$5 Head Commissions OPEN
Posted 14 years agoShort and quick, but been thinking about doing some little $5 head commissions. Just digital sketches, possibly done via stream or not, and head and neck, possibly a bit of shoulder. Over on
Durrn 's page is just the headshot from working on a ref pic for hir, but that's the kind of piece I'm thinking. ( http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5915051 )
At this point, I'm just fishing to see if people might be interested. If there's a few people who might like to partake, I'll see about doing a couple and seeing how it goes.
I still have some pieces outstanding, things I'd like to finish and stuff I need to start, but right now I need the practice.
Comment below if you'd be interested.
EDIT:
Okay, I'm going to give a few of these a try and see how they go. Here is the format that I will use.
Post here so that I can keep a rolling track of who's interested in these, linking to the two images that you have which you feel capture your muzzle/face features the best. Should you not have any images, and/or no images which you feel are really 'accurate', then note to that effect in your comment and note me a description. In that event, please be as detailed as you can, images that may not be your character but are examples of what kind of features you want can be linked to in the note.
Timeframe on these is not going to be rushed. For $5, I'm not going to be putting days into these, but by the same token I'm not trying to 'make a quick buck' so they will basically be as time permits me.
If I don't get to yours, please don't be offended.
Payment will be by paypal, I will provide that at a later point. Payment will be expected after completion, but before posting. I will send a low-res and watermarked version by email to show that the work is finished, and will provide a higher res, unwatermarked but signed copy after payment. If you are unhappy with how I've drawn your face, then I will redraw once under the same guidelines. If you are still unhappy, then no payment is required but you will not receive any copies of the sketches besides the small and watermarked versions.
I will try to do some of these by stream. If you are in the stream when I go to draw, please give input during the process.
If anyone else has any questions, please note or post in the comments, and I will answer as I can.

Disappointed
Posted 14 years ago6 months waiting for a commission, only to have it time and again pushed through to a final version with no stages that I could've made corrections, and landing in my lap finally with details wrong, not happy with colours, and a 'I'm sorry." as a reply. That's it for commissions for this dragon, if this is what to expect from the experience.
Don't ask who it was, I'm not going to go calling them out publicly. Just kind of at a loss for how to handle a waste of money and a major letdown like this.

February Update
Posted 14 years agoFigured I'd let people know what's been up, for the few people that might be interested.
Work term is going well. I've been hired on a one year contract following the completion of my program in June, which is nice. A ~$50k per year job straight out of school will be nice. Looking now for a house, going to be going around and seeing a few places and a condo or two to find something I like.
The drawing's kind of been sideboarded for a little while, as I have an exam tomorrow morning in Microbiology, as well as the rotation in that laboratory's been tiring, if enjoyable. Hopefully I will get going again on that Saturday or so, so keep an eye out for a stream post saturday evening (afternoon for you west coasters, night for the european crowd).
Otherwise... health is par for me, meaning I'm sick in some way shape or fashion most of the time still. Adjusting still to residence life, even if I'm halfway through the stint here. Where'd the last two months go.
The tl;dr of it: busy dragon, will get drawing again in a couple days. Hope everyone's had a decent month.

Persistance
Posted 14 years agoThe drawing that I started last week, I'd initially said I was going to move on from it. However, been working on it a lot today and will hopefully have something up a little later on to show. Not what was originally intended with it, but coming out well regardless I think. Just a teaser warning.
Looking for Critiques and Help
Posted 14 years agoAlright, back in my hometown for the night after spending a few days in Montreal. Kind of got hit with a pose idea in Trudeau while waiting for the first leg of the flight, and put some lines to paper there as well as on the flights back home. As I don't have my scanner here, everything went with me when I moved, I'm getting a digital photo of what I've got done, it will be going up sometime in the next 10 minutes after I fiddle with it a bit.
Point is, I'll be looking for a few artists to bounce things off of. I haven't sat down to seriously draw in a year, so I'm rusty and I will need some serious help. If you're interested in working with me on it, let me know in notes. And I don't mean little comments or little remarks, those can stay in comments. If you're willing to have me email corresponding, as well as giving serious critiques of how I'm doing it (and will be willing to deal with the hyperness of it - you'll see what I mean) as well as help me try and figure out how to do some of the things with it that I want to accomplish - it's a big undertaking. There are a few people I'll be asking myself in notes, however I do greatly doubt any of them will be interested. Still. Let me know. I'm serious about getting back into things this time. I've let myself beat myself over art for too long. Time to get some work done. And I need some help getting there.

My Zen Blog - Zen On The Rock
Posted 14 years agoDecided to start a little blog about my Zen practice and experience. Planning to post something there at least once a week, mostly of ruminations and the like. If you're interested in the practice, feel free to frequent and post, however this is meant as a serious endeavour and I would appreciate any posts to be related to the material there, and not to here. Thank you.

Art Featurettes
Posted 15 years agoAlrightythen, saw this on
Grind3r's journal and was lucky enough to get featured, so I figured I'd follow suit and put it up on my page. Fairly simple, and while I don't have a whole lot of watchers, still serves the purpose of showing around some people's work and/or characters. So, without further ado, a bit of copypasta.

Durrn My mate and my everything.> http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1035932 DNA's art is superb, and he did probably the best rendition of Durrn, in my honest opinion. [Mature]
> http://www.furaffinity.net/view/756821/ This one's a biased choice, but it's one of my first trys at drawing my mate. Deserves another try, some 3 years later, but it shows off some of the warm size and mass we enjoy together, even moreso now. [Mature]
> http://www.furaffinity.net/view/756865/ What's there to say, it's Sample, and it's my mate. His usual excellent quality of work, on my big muscled tigerdrake. Hurr.
Update 1/15: Last four spots called off. 4 of 5 that I did, didn't continue it on their own pages. So not particularly interested in another 4 not continuing either.
Fading days of 2010
Posted 15 years agoWell, the year's coming to a close. Some major changes for the beginning of the New Year, as I've moved out of the family home and will be moving into nursing residence on the other side of the province in the first week of January. This is due to my medical program being almost done, all that is left is a four month practical workterm in a hospital and then my certification exam. Looking forward to a bit of freedom, we'll see how it goes.
The upshot to this should be that I'll have a bit more time to get back to drawing. The downside is that the hospital I'm moving into is undecided as to whether they will provide me with internet access as I'm not actively a student of the university they're affiliated with. Hopefully I should be able to work around this.
In art news, there's a couple of treats in the pipeline once I figure out how to actually get them put to paper. Also, will after two years be trying to actually do the two commission pieces I owe. So, Astor and Iridium, you can expect to see some skeleton sketches heading your ways soon, assuming you're still interested.
Hope everyone's had a good Christmas, and will have a -safe- New Year's. See you on the other side.

Because sometimes, things need to change.
Posted 15 years agoA friend at school told me about this today.
Read it.
Spread it.
Post it everywhere you can. Make people aware.

The UN has removed homosexuals from its list of those protected from unjust executions.
The UN has failed to protect the rights of human beings. It's violated its own charter of rights. People need to be aware of this. This cannot stand.

Another year
Posted 15 years agoAnother birthday. One year older, though not so sure about that one year wiser part.
Newfoundland vs. Igor
Posted 15 years agoEveryone on the Island weathering out Igor, hold in tight. Barely got home in time, the road around one of the lakes here is in the process of flooding, the road's washed out in spots, and the bridge before my house is almost overflowed. And there's another 100mm (4 inches or so) of rain to come yet.
You know you're from Newfoundland when
Posted 15 years agoCame across this meme on someone's page, and couldn't pass it up. For those who haven't seen it, toss "You know you're from (insert hometown/province/state) when" into Google, punch "I'm feeling lucky", then post the results on that page, bolding the ones that are either rather poignant, or actually true. So, here's mine.
My result: http://www.newfiejokes.net/you-know.....land-when.html
You know you're from Newfoundland when...
- You only know three spices - salt, pepper and ketchup. (Not me, but most)
- You design your Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit. (Our week of summer comes sometime in July. Then back to 11.5 months of winter)
- The mosquitoes have landing lights. (Not quite, but definitely right of way)
- You have more miles on your snowblower than your car. (Three feet of snow in one snowstorm, whatnow?)
- You have 10 favourite recipes for bottled moose. (Can't stand it myself)
- Canadian Tire on any Saturday is busier than the toy stores at Christmas. (Madness? THIS IS SPORTING GOODS)
- You live in a house that has no front step, yet the door is one meter above the ground. (For that matter, you know that the front door is not the main door. The main door's the back door.)
- You've taken your kids trick-or-treating in a blizzard. (Refer back to Neverending Winter)
- Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled in with snow. (Dammit our roads are shit.)
- You think sexy lingerie is tube-socks and a flannel nightie with only 8 buttons.
- You owe more money on your snowmobile than your car.
- The local paper covers national and international headlines on 1/4 page, but requires 6 pages for local softball scores.
- At least twice a year, the kitchen doubles as a meat processing plant.
- The most effective mosquito repellent is a shotgun. (Just be careful when they shoot back)
- Your snowblower gets stuck on the roof. (Don't laugh. Driving by the Avalon Mall while they're snowblowing the roof? Oh yeah.)
- You think the start of salmon fishing season is a national holiday.
- You frequently clean grease off your barbeque so the bears won't prowl on your deck.
- You know which leaves make good toilet paper.
- You find -40C a little nippy. (Cause it's FUCKING cold here.)
- The trunk of your car doubles as a deep freeze. (Refer to the above.)
- You can play road hockey on skates. (Try winter driving on the Outer Ring Road. More like Curling. Most of us use studded tires if we can.)
- You know 4 seasons - Winter, Still Winter, almost Winter and Construction. (Too fucking right. Construction season -sucks-)
- The municipality buys a Zamboni before a bus.

Update
Posted 15 years agoBeen fairly off the reservation for the last while, but figured I'd give people who I haven't touched base with in a long while an idea of what's going on.
What had initially looked like a thyroid issue seems to have something to do with my liver. For those medically inclined, I've got raised iron and liver enzymes. So far the doc can't nail it down to anything specific, and I'm waiting until June to get an ultrasound. The doc has classified it as 'elective', thus I'm far down on the already stupidly long waiting list.
I survived another term of classes, waiting on my marks to arrive at the end of the week but I was notified that I passed everything. Now the lab work starts, to build the skills now that the theory's been covered. Joy of joys. Just hope that I don't have to move out to do the work terms, since they're only 10 spots in the city, with a class of 30. They'll want to ship us out all over the province.
Otherwise, I'm alive. Starting to take my Zen practice a little more seriously, delving into that more. Also trying to figure out what I'm really afraid of that keeps me from drawing anymore. Hiding the work's become second nature, so far as the paper goes. So what about it am I afraid of.
Anyways. Just so people don't think I'm dead. I will be trying to be around a little again, but no promises.

State of the Orange
Posted 16 years agoOr is it Country?
Planet?
Anyways. Haven't been around a whole lot, so here's a summation of what's going on.
Finished up the first term of the actual Medical Laboratory program I've been at for the last year and a half (first year was a 'common' year to 3 seperate streams). Came out of that with As, so it's going alright, but it's drained the hell out of me. Christmas was a blur. Spent most of December asleep. Enough so that I've gone to the doctor about it, and he thinks I've got a problem with my thyroid. He suspects Hashimoto's Syndrome, basically an autoimmune disorder targeting my thyroid. Plays havoc with metabolism. Bloodwork was taken a week ago, haven't heard back from him and apparently he's sick so I can't go to the office and get anything from him.
Otherwise, nothing's been happening with the art. Have a hard enough time spending what really alert and awake time I have in classes and studying. Had wanted to do a 'drawing a day' kind of thing this month, but sleeping 10-12 hours a day put the kaibosh to that. Been trying to learn to cook though, that's going well at least.
So, tl;dr of it. Tired, busy, haven't really been able to be around, and until whatever's wrong with me gets fixed, and even if it does, may be rather elusive. Course is hard, but rewarding. And still alive. Can't forget that part.
Take care, people. Even to those I used to hang about with, I might not be around, but doesn't mean I don't miss the company. Just have things pressing on me.

Think I've got an admirer
Posted 16 years agoBeen playing Dragon Age Origins on the 360 lately. Came across a hut for an elf in Denerim named Cyrion. The name's also used in a dialogue, and is said exactly the same I say it. Think I may have an admirer on the BioWare team, as my name's unusual enough that I don't think someone would just come up with a phonetic match to it.
