Texas Officer Fires At Playful Pit Bull, Woman Injured
Posted 14 years agoSource
LA MARQUE (October 8, 2009)--A police officer in La Marque wounded a woman accidentally while trying to shoot a pit bull she saw jumping on a group of people.
The incident happened about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in a residential neighborhood in La Marque, 35 miles southeast of Houston.
Witnesses said the passing officer spotted what she thought was a pit bull attack but actually was the dog playing with a two people.
The witnesses said the woman playing with the dog shouted, which prompted the officer to get out of her car and shoot at the animal.
A bullet fragment ricocheted off the street and wounded a woman standing nearby in the chest.
The woman was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.
She’s expected to recover.
So is the wounded dog.
A grand jury will review the shooting, police said.

Movie animator charged with beating dog
Posted 14 years agoA 40-year-old DreamWorks animator – one who worked on animal-themed children’s movies such as “Kung Fu Panda” and “Madagascar 2″ — has been arrested on an animal cruelty charge after a surveillance camera videotaped him beating a neighbor’s muzzled dog with a hammer.
Young Song pleaded not guilty in court yesterday and faces a preliminary hearing next month. He allegedly climbed a fence into a neighbor’s yard in Pasadena. Surveillance camera video shows the 16-month-old dog being beaten but does not reveal what Song did with the dog.
Authorities say the dog is missing and presumed dead.
Song was being held on $40,500 bail, according to authorities, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“When our officers first viewed the videotape, one of our officers had tears in his eyes. He’d never seen anything like this before,” said Steve McNall, who heads the Pasadena Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “In my 31 years at this animal shelter I’ve never seen anything like this.”
McNall’s agency, which is licensed to investigate crimes involving animals, is conducting the probe. It made the arrest in conjunction with Pasadena police.
According to authorities, the suspect shot the dog with a pellet gun, then returned with a hammer and began chasing and striking the animal.
The Times reported that Young works as a “surfacer,” an artisan who creates the look and surface qualities for animated characters, props and environments. Young’s credits on animal-themed films also include “Shark Tale” and “Bee Movie.”
The motive for the attack is not clear. “It might have originated as a barking issue, a noise issue, and then escalated into something else,” McNall said.
If convicted, Song could face more than four years in prison, the district attorney’s office said.

H$U$ blatantly lies and sidesteps inquiries
Posted 14 years agoIn the age of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, it’s easier than ever to directly interact with practically anyone and everyone. And in response to some of the charges we’ve leveled against the Humane Society of the United States, some people have taken full advantage of social media to ask HSUS a few tough questions.
(More power to them. We’re confident our research can withstand scrutiny, even from HSUS’s spin machine.)
On Monday we spotted a Twitter conversation between HSUS and someone we presume is a HumaneWatch reader. He asked HSUS about its support for Michael Vick and its lack of financial support for pet shelters. And as you might expect, the animal rights group didn’t exactly have good answers.
Here’s the full conversation:
SprayCanSam HumaneSociety veganbreak I didn't know vegans other than peta supported the senseless killing of adoptable companion animals is shelters
SprayCanSam veganbreak ask your buddies at HumaneSociety how much of their budget goes to hands-on shelters. The answer will disgust you. Less than 1%
SprayCanSam I wonder if the HumaneSociety will support all the dogfighters arrested in #Philly last week. They love Mike Vick so much. [vulgar hashtag deleted -ed]
humanesociety SprayCanSam it's a good thing they were arrested, raising awareness = raising number of dogfighting tips
SprayCanSam HumaneSociety huh? It was entirely preventable. Supporting Mike Vick = increased dogfighting #philly http://t.co/JJLzxI6
SprayCanSam HumaneSociety if you make a killer out to be a role model, others will follow in his footsteps. #mikevick
SprayCanSam HumaneSociety how much of your annual budget goes to hands on shelters? Just curious...
humanesociety SprayCanSam anytime a situation such as dogfighting has a spotlight shown on it, it increases awareness which increases tips etc
humanesociety SprayCanSam you can see our complete financial reports on our website, we've been ranked in the top 10 most fiscally responsible by Worth
SprayCanSam HumaneSociety so glorifying a convicted dogfighter helps stop dogfighting?
SprayCanSam HumaneSociety I've seen your records. I just wanted to hear you say "less than one percent".
humanesociety SprayCanSam that is not an accurate figure.
SprayCanSam HumaneSociety so what is the accurate figure?
humanesociety SprayCanSam we don't have a separate listing for that, our campaigns and programs and rescues often support local groups
humanesociety SprayCanSam but again, that isn't our primary purpose. our primary mission is to help animals on a national scale
SprayCanSam HumaneSociety you don't keep those kinds of records. Nice. Saving animals in hands-on shelters isn't your concern. Nice.
If you look up “dodgy” in the dictionary, chances are you’ll see a picture of HSUS’s Twitter page. Asked why it shares a minuscule amount of its budget with pet shelters, HSUS could only reply that Worth magazine has rated HSUS as fiscally responsible.
By the way, HSUS is no longer one of Worth magazine’s Top Ten Most Fiscally Responsible Charities. It was left off of the 2011 list in favor of the Kentucky Humane Society—a group which, unlike HSUS, actually cares for dogs and cats. And in any event, nobody asked HSUS about Worth.
Similarly, HSUS replied to another Twitter inquiry about its lack of pet shelter grants by claiming it spends 70 percent of its budget on programs. This is demonstrably untrue, and really just another diversion.
It’s interesting that HSUS admits it doesn’t have “a separate listing” of pet shelter grants. Oddly enough, we’ve put one together using HSUS’s own tax returns. And it shows HSUS spends less than one percent of its millions financially supporting pet shelters. Saying that number “is not an accurate figure” might hold water if HSUS actually kept that “separate listing.” (Otherwise, how would it know?)
One of these days, a hard-hitting journalist will really scrutinize HSUS’s priorities and spending habits. And spin won’t cut it.

Heroic Pit Bull Takes Bullets To Save Owner
Posted 14 years agoSure, your dog keeps the letter wielding postman from attacking, but would he take a bullet on your behalf?
Dog owner Osmar Persisco of Garibaldi, Brazil, knows the answer is “yes” after his pet Max leapt to defend him from armed robbers, taking three bullets along the way.
Persisco was parking his truck near Max’s favourite field when two armed robbers approached him and demanded the keys to his vehicle.
Persisco resisted and the thieves opened fire, drawing blood after grazing the 47-year-old’s forehead with a bullet.
That’s when Max lost his cool.
“He saw the blood and was furious,” Persisco told Brazilian newspaper Globo. “He left like a rocket to attack the thieves. One of them ran away, but Max dominated the other one. To defend himself, the thief ended up shooting the dog. Max thwarted the assault and saved my life.”
Max was hit twice in his chest and once in his leg, but by then he had scared off the potential thieves.
Persisco rushed the heroic pet he had adopted three years earlier to his local vet. Max is expected to make a full recovery.
“If I didn’t have my dog around, they would have killed me,” Persisco told the paper. “He’s my hero.”

5-month-old Bull Terrier Puppy Maced and Shot
Posted 14 years agoA two year old pit bull mix, and a twelve-pound, five month old, bull terrier puppy rush to a waist-high retaining wall, barking at a pair of police officers who were knocking at their door to do a probation check on their owner. One of the officers pepper sprays the puppy, and then pulls out his gun, and shoots her. A twelve-pound puppy. This has got to be a joke, right?
Sadly, it's not. Within the past two weeks, there have been two incidents in which police officers have shot at, and killed, a bull breed dog on its own property, in front of its owner and other witnesses. Two incidents in which the owners had no idea officers were coming to visit, and who had woken up that day as if it were any other day. I can't even comprehend what happened in either situation.
I'm not one to jump on the paranoid wagon, but please, bring your dog inside if you're not there to supervise. And, if the police knock on your door, don't assume they're going to be friendly to your dog. In general, if they want to enter your house, they need to knock, and announce who they are. Then, they're supposed to wait a reasonable time (or be refused entrance) before they can do anything else. So, if they come to your door, please put your dog away before you open that door. Without commenting on whether or not police officers are truly justified in shooting a pet because they felt threatened, suffice it to say that officers are granted great leeway in the eyes of the law as to whether their actions were "reasonable" depending on the circumstances. In these situations, oftentimes the only evidence you'll have is your word against theirs. I'm sure that we'd all prefer not to even get to that point. So please, as a matter of precaution, put your dogs safely away when you're not around, and before you open the door to any potential non-dog friendly strangers.
Our hearts go out to both Mr. Yishay and Mr. Locatelli.

RIP Skyy...
Posted 14 years agoSkyy was a 10month old APBT puppy who was killed today during a storm at the show. I'm very distraught that such a young dog died, I guess I'm lucky I was too poor to go to the show... This picture was taken not long before the storm hit. It was Skyy's first show. Two other (thus unknown) puppies in a wire crate also died.
I'm really upset that this happened... Poor dogs. And poor owners. (No humans were killed, though 7 were hospitalized.)
