Oona the Cave Bunny
General | Posted 13 years agoFor those of you who’ve been wondering where I’ve been & what I’ve been doing , this is it! I’ve been developing my comic strip called Oona the Cave Bunny , which will be published starting Friday , February 15th by Radio Comix here:
I’ve been gone a long time , I know. But let me offer my apologies first , & an explanation if you please…
I’m sorry for being absent. A lot of fans in the furry community have really been supportive of my stuff , & many’s the time I’ve been warmly surprised by someone who mentions some work of mine that I was sure went unnoticed. Even one kind comment makes it all worthwhile , & there have been many. I feel I haven’t adequately given back to folks who took the time to comment on my work.
I won’t bore you with the details of what situations I’ve been dealing with in life , we all have them. But my goals are to take proper care of my life & family , to do work that I like & can be proud of , & to respond to viewers & fans & participate in community on some level. It’s a work in progress , but I feel I’m making headway. Family situation’s stabilizing , & I’m working now on a comic strip that fulfills many of my creative goals.
I fear my online communications may not reach ideal levels for me , but here’s my ideas about that: At the very least , I’ll work to make FurAffinity a place to see work of mine that never or rarely appears elsewhere , & work harder to respond to the community. I apologize in advance for my shortcomings here , & if I seem distant or uncommunicative , I hope you don’t think I’m unkind or standoffish. Perhaps , being an artist , I feel the need to devote more time producing art to show you , which is my main form of communication here.
Oona will be a high – quality full color comic strip , appearing once a week updating every Friday. I’m formatting it to echo the horizontal Sunday newspaper comics layout. It will feature relatively short continuing stories as well as short single & multiple page comics occasionally.
I started out reading & loving some of the great newspaper strips. Back when I was very young , there were a surprising number of the great classics entering the last years of their runs: Walt Kelly’s Pogo , Al Capp’s Li’l Abner , Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy. I remember the last few Harold Gray Orphan Annie strips , & they were still reprinting some of Milton Caniff’s Terry & the Pirates. Many others , too. I’m not that old ; it just really wasn’t so impossibly long ago. If you loved Calvin & Hobbes as I did , you should realize the newspapers used to be filled with many great comic strips , not just the occasional standout.
Some of my reasons for working in a Sunday comics format are aesthetic ; others are maybe a bit more visionary. I want to reflect my great admiration for the rich history of newspaper comic strips – some of the greatest work ever done in comic form comes out of that tradition , and working on a newspaper strip is something I have always wanted to do. I also really want to break away from the notion that comics on the web must necessarily be formatted like printed comic books. When viewing Oona , I like the idea of people turning their tablets or readers sideways. There’s something pleasing to my eye about comics in a landscape format. The Sunday comics were primarily a horizontal viewing experience , & it seems fitting to me that such an idea should continue with our new viewing technology.
I envision these comics as purely a product for digital viewing. By breaking away from a comic book format & presenting shorter stories , I hope to address a couple of things that bother me about webcomics sometimes. I find scrolling up & down to view the contents of a page distracting & often defeating a creator’s attempts to present the page as a compelling composition as a whole. Reading a comic story at the rate of a couple of pages a week sometimes harms the storytelling , as comics are commonly paced to be read whole in a single sitting or so. This may not be completely avoidable due to the needs of storytelling , but my ideas to mitigate these problems include a horizontal format & shorter stories with maybe a few more expository captions used to make it easier for new or casual readers to enjoy them , an old serial technique to keep readers up to speed.
I’m really excited about starting this strip! I’m putting a lot of thought & effort into it , along with some of my best & newest art. Please take a look , & I hope you get a kick out of it.

Thanks to you Watchers and Favers
General | Posted 18 years agoThanks to everyone! I try to respond as often as I can , but I apologize that it hasn't been that often lately. You should know how much it means to an artist to know that people are looking at and liking his or her art , and I'm no exception. One thing I especially like about doing furry art is just the incredible liberty , the opportunity to cross genres and specialties within one art fandom. I'm also doing plenty of looking around myself here , and admiring some beautiful and visionary stuff people do.
Okay , I'm getting mushy. But if we don't praise our stuff , who will? So many bypass furry art , and they're missing some of the best illustrators working. Just had to be said.

General | Posted 18 years agoFirst of all , thank you! It's a very nice feeling knowing that you like a particular piece or two , and very encouraging. I'm doing my best to respond to people , because I think it's important to. But I can't keep up very well with all the faving ( I blush as I write this)! I'm trying to make sure I respond to all all shouts , though , so drop me one. I'm not ignoring you! Thanks again.
