My Art Blog
Hello folks! The goings are going; nothing vastly outside the usual, but I wanted to update on a few things.
I may not post with massive regularity to my gallery, but I am indeed working on loads of art every day. The place you can find most frequent updates about my artwork is my twitter account, where I tweet everything from works-in-progress to silly sketches that may never wind up here, etc. (My twitter account may also include bizarre personal thoughts and out of context shenanigans, but it seems that about half of what I tweet as of late is just art.)
I also recently acquired an art-specific tumblr account, which I will be posting both some old and some new artwork too, including progress shots/technical details about the work that won't wind up elsewhere.
Finally, I wanted to let the folks in the Train Group know that I am getting there! I've been poking at this piece at least three times a week as of late, slowly inching my way toward completion. Here is the most recent work-in-progress shot. When I do finish this piece, I will likely hold a vote as to the theme of the next group endeavor, much like I did for the Tavern Brawl - though once selected, I think I may try securing participants differently than usual for the next, perhaps in the form of a YCH. Details on that to surface once we get there.
Commissions are currently: Open
Other than in stream or when prior arrangement is made, work is not done on a commission until AFTER payment is received! Queue spots are only set in stone when payment is received, be it full payment or some form of deposit. Unpaid slots can be added to the queue, but when they are paid jump above any other unpaid slots.

Late last night my partner and I arrived back at our apartment in Jersey, this time finally to stay. We've been traveling with hardly a full week's respite since the beginning of July for Anthrocon, and obviously I was doing convention preparations before that so... things will finally be returning 100% back to normality for the first time in a few months! I am looking forward to this.
Our latest voyage was in the name of seeing family, in West Virginia, Ohio, and briefly Pennsylvania. I tried to work a full week during said travel, with mixed success; turned out seeing various relatives interrupted a bit more time than I had hoped, but it was good to have done. Previous voyages were work convention --> work convention --> convention, haha. Summer is such a busy time. :x
At any rate! Thank you lovely persons for your patience with the schedule oddity, we shall finally finally re-achieve total normalcy. I will set about writing up this week's schedule momentarily, and then shall get started streaming for the day. :)

Hey guys! I just got home from our Dragon*Con 2014 trip, and it was phenomenal. Time permitting I would like to put together a con write-up, shall probably post that to Tumblr if I do. We got to see a number of excellent friends, to meet fantastic people (Amy Acker!! J August Richards! Jim Butcher again! Various artists! that sort of folk), eat good food, and - as always seems to be the case with that con - I came away from the experience very inspired and chomping at the bit to write and work on personal art projects more in the near future. Though I went into the experience still a bit sick and the trip down felt miserable, it was absolutely worth it, haha. <3 Dragon*Con. I am always so grateful to have the opportunity to attend.
For the end of this week, I would like to finish up my three in-progress take home commissions left from FAU (Gaslight, Taonas, Paul S) that I haven't completed yet due to the sick that befell me right before D*C, reorganize, and work on the Train Group.
Next week I will be visiting family, but will work normally during the days, so expect streaming to resume on Monday, September 8th. I will get a schedule up soon. :) I will also buckle down and get all pending notes/emails replied to by tomorrow.

Alright, I'm just about finished spamming you guys with photographs of pieces I drew at FA: United this year - I was borrowing a friend's camera at the con, so I was able to take somewhat better documentation than crummy cell phone photos for once, so figured I may as well take the time to color correct them a little in photoshop and post 'em up. :)
Thank you so much everyone who said hi or bought stuff from me at the convention, I had a blast! I'd never sold artwork at anything other than Anthrocon before, and really enjoyed the vibe of the smaller convention. Had the opportunity to see/meet lots of fantastic folks. I hope to deal my wares at more small conventions in the future!
Stream/queue has been updated to reflect some vague semblance of my plan for between now and Dragon*Con. (I know I'm a bit behind getting stream up today - now that all my FAU stuff is up, I will nom a quick lunch and get that started shortly!) I will not be streaming from August 26th - September 7th on account of D*C and then visiting family, but things should regain some degree of normality around September 8th. I will be in Ohio from the 8th - 12th but hope to maintain a normal work schedule during the days regardless, and then shall be back in Jersey from the 15th onward, at which point my schedule shall truly regain full normality.
Big thank you to everyone who commissions/buys art from me and makes it possible for me to produce artwork full time, you all are the best, and I am always grateful, so I always want to mention that. <3

Was digging back through my gallery when deciding what prints to order more of, and then continued back even further out of curiosity. Behold - this, this is why my prices have steadily gone up over the past three years, because my quality has gone up rather substantially. XD

I could go on and on with examples, it's fascinating. I've been supporting myself freelance for three years, and in that time my understanding of anatomy, composition, and painting has increased tenfold. So yes, that's why I started out charging $10/hour, and now charge $17/hour. (I think it went 10 --> 11 --> 13 --> 15 --> 17, in terms of progression so far.) You can get a similar level of detail from me in 3 hours now what you could in 5 or 6 back then, and at much greater quality, haha.

Anthrocon 2014, though exhausting, was a great time! Thank you everyone who said hey to me at the convention, double thank you to those of you who bought things from my dealer's den table or in the art show. :3 Special shoutout to Thriceborn who was a fantastic table-mate in the den, and my con roommates Renard, Johnny, and of course my matesprit Jonneh. X3 I was also quite pleased to squeeze in hangouts with my Liebchen who I hadn't seen in ages and missed terribly, and also William who shared his gorgeous pottery work with me. :)
I just arrived back home late last night, so today is dedicated to unpacking, paperwork, and reorganizing myself. I will resume normal streaming tomorrow on forward, which is of course still located at Tigerdile. (I met Tigerdile's owner Tanabi briefly at AC as well! Very friendly gent, thanks again for the Tigerdile plushie! :D Now that I am home he will live on my work desk.)
Now for the business of leftovers! I sold a great deal of commissions, prints, and fun little items at my dealer table, 5 limited edition prints in the general section of the art show, and my 1/1 limited large dat ass print, but the asstounding tail was my only traditional media piece that sold in the show, and I do have cat warrior playmats left which folks expressed interest in. So I'm going to offer a limited window of time for folks to purchase a few of these things online - after which point, if they aren't snagged, they are either coming with me to FA:United or getting shipped across country to hang in the RMFC art show.
Available to purchase between now and July 19th, first come first serve:
--Cat Warrior Playmats: $30 each + shipping
--Butterfly original: $60 + shipping
--F for Fox original: $100 + shipping claimed
--Bear Naked Caffeine original: $120 + shipping
--Bum original: $100 + shipping
--Sticky Buns original: $140 + shipping
If you are interested in any of the above, please EMAIL me at redtavern[at]gmail.com with the piece you would like to buy and your mailing address. I will remove items from the list once they are spoken for.
Thank you everyone for supporting my ability to create artwork for you, the furry community is a wonderful place and I am grateful for all of you. <3

We've entered June, so Anthrocon prep shall intensify. :o Going to open up for badge and painted sketchbook pre-orders within the next week or so, along with a limited number of general commission hours. (The tricky bit about upcoming conventions is balancing making enough funds to survive in current time with enough prep work to do well at the convention!) I'll also be doing a lot more offline-from-stream days as I work on traditional media paintings for the Anthrocon Art Show.
More to the point right now, though: are there any paintings in my gallery that you guys would like to see prints of at Anthrocon? If so, which ones, and what size prints do you prefer?
Commissions are currently: Closed.
Other than in stream or when prior arrangement is made, work is not done on a commission until AFTER payment is received! Queue spots are only set in stone when payment is received, be it full payment or some form of deposit. Unpaid slots can be added to the queue, but when they are paid jump above any other unpaid slots.

I finally committed this ramble to the internets over on my tumblr, but had initially began writing it with the intention of posting it here on FurAffinity. So here we are:
Thoughts on Art Pricing
Today on twitter I saw a retweet that read something to the effect of, “Art is harder than you think it is. You’re not just paying for the art itself, you’re paying for the experience and time required to make it!” and many of you have probably seen the comic strip with the graphic designer who is offering up a sheet of logos to a fellow in a business suit, and the business man is saying “Why does ten minutes of your time cost so much!” to which the designer replies, “Because it took me ten years to learn how to do each of these in ten minutes.”
While those are very good messages, they strike me as somewhat incomplete with regards to the full picture involved when someone makes a living off of artwork. I see many many skilled and hard working artists undercharging themselves, so I felt compelled to expound upon why art should cost more than some folks think it ought to.
When you are working freelance, the amount of money you charge is NOT the amount you make. Self employment involves a number of overhead expenses of both time and money that more traditional employment does not. If you are for example a programmer in an office, chances are the company you work for has also something along the lines of sales, marketing, and management departments. Someone else is paid by your company to spend time advertising the work that you do, another person may be paid to respond to customer inquiries, and yet more people are in charge of organizing your schedule. In freelance, that’s all you. You, the artist, are doing all of those jobs. And if you, like me, only charge for the hours you actually spend painting/drawing, then the hours you spend replying to notes and emails to negotiate commissions and answer questions, organizing your schedule, researching reference materials, and so on and so forth are entirely on your own dime. In a more traditional employment model, the company you work for pays the tangible overhead fees as well, such as the cost to rent the space you work in, internet and utilities at that location, and necessary supplies/equipment. As an artist, you pay for your own studio space, or rent a living space big enough to use part of it as a studio space, any equipment and utilities associated with the kind of artwork you make, and any and all materials from paint and canvas to replacement tablet pens and a tablet. Whatever the case may be, it’s on you, so that also comes out of the money you make. Lastly, there are of course fees associated with being a business, which can be anything from paypal fees, to quarterly taxes, to the cost of advertisement (banner ads, business cards, whatever the case may be). Personally, I charge $17 per hour for raw, literal time spent on my paintings and drawings. I find that for every 6 hours I work, I actually spend at least 8 hours total on doing so due to replying to messages and other organizational time, thus receiving more like $12.75 per worked hour, sometimes much less. Paypal takes a cut out of that initial $17 per hour, lowering it even further to about $11.70 per hour. The other involved expenses vary depending on the month, but after other overhead expenses I probably earn a net $9-10 range per hour. Which is above minimum wage so yay! But you can see how I have to charge what I do, and why artists may gradually raise their prices over time when they are finding that their severely underpriced work is not succeeding at paying all the bills.
And that’s just the technical side of things. Artwork can take a *lot* out of a person, and producing it for others even moreso. It requires a great deal of focus, the ability to take criticism, and constant study/practice. Now queue the “it took ten years for me to learn how to do this in ten minutes” speech - I've been drawing on a daily basis for fifteen years and only have been making a fulltime living off of doing so for the past three. Creating artwork is very much an example of skilled labor. People don’t just up and start drawing technically beautiful things, they have to work really, really hard at doing so… and a lot of them are also paying off very expensive student loans to have paid for the privilege of doing some of that work/learning among a body of their peers, haha.
IN SUMMATION, ARTISTS: RAISE YOUR DAMN PRICES AND STICK TO YOUR GUNS. Don’t let people haggle you into less. If people are buying your work, you’re not charging too much. If you have more work than you can physically do, chances are you are charging too little. Also try timing yourself as you work and base your quotes off of an hourly model, it’ll help. If you are making less than minimum wage hourly and art is your full time pursuit, you are charging too little. Raise. Your. Prices.

Hey everyone! I have decided to do away with any fixed rate commissions in favor of a more streamlined hourly-only approach regardless of commission type. To assist with this, I have put together a more comprehensive hourly example guide, which can be found here: http://anyarose.net/commission.html
Yes, in case you missed it, I bumped my commission rates a couple weeks ago in response to increased work speed and rising student loan payments. Just by a couple bucks. Refresh my featured submission to see the change reflected there as well, etc. My new rate is $17 per hour. ($15 per hour rate still available on artistic freedom commissions of 5 hours or more.)
Now that I've done that and gotten further ahead on my current commissions, I am opening up for about 40 hours worth of new commission material, for completion by the first week of May.
If you would like to commission me, please email me at redtavern@gmail.com requesting a quote. In the email please include any relevant information about the characters, setting, and coloring/painting style you are interested in.

If I'm not posting here as much, it's because I'm working on loads of lengthier projects. You can see me making art live though, usually at least 5 days a week, and now located on Tigerdile rather than Livestream! I schedule out what commissions I plan to be working on for a given day ahead of time on my schedule/queue link above. :]
Sometime when I stop being quite so occupied by that and then distracted by my post-work attempts at exercise and personal projects, I'll actually update my pricesheet as well. SOMETIME. I've been meaning to bump my prices a tiny bit for a couple months now, and make a fresh price sheet + full commission guide to go with it, and just keep not getting around to it because I've kept so busy!
Anyway, bed. Keep on staying awesome, fuzzies. <3

I decided to give Tigerdile a try, and got my stream all set up. HOWEVER I am having technical difficulties with Xsplit. OBS, sadly, will not broadcast on my computer due to having an older integrated graphics card (I stream from a tablet PC). Xsplit is thus my only choice. I got the video working fine but am having some issues with sound - specifically, the default playback device capture (the "speaker" icon sound source). My microphone is fine, I use the mic on my headset and was able to set that up with no difficulty. When I experimentally put on some music, however, I discovered the problem: I could hear the music on my headset from the streaming computer, but the netbook I opened the stream on for testing did not play it back. I could hear sounds from my microphone, and system sounds from the streaming computer, but not the music. My headset was indeed set as my default playback device. The volume sliders in Xsplit were all the way up. Help would be very much appreciated, if anyone had any ideas about what I could try to troubleshoot this! My headset is a Logitech G930 if that impacts any of the particulars, and my tablet is running Windows 7 64 bit.
Alternatively if someone DID know a way to magically make Open Broadcaster Software function on an Asus Eee Slate EP121, I would be vastly overjoyed.
I shall continuing streaming on Livestream for the foreseeable future until I get things figured out.
(Also apologies if this post is incoherent, been trying to troubleshoot these pieces of software for the past several hours, am all of the tired.)
Thank you in advance to anyone who can provide advice!!
EDIT: Partially resolved, got speaker sound now - now trying to nail down the cause of both my mic and music echoing periodically. Shall trial-and-error that more when I am more awake.

So, when I went to try and run my stream this morning, livestream was down. It has been giving me a lot of problems lately in general, and if they persist I may have to consider moving my stream to a new service.
Many folks have recommended Tigerdile, but initially I did not want to consider it because viewers have to click through an 18+ confirmation page to reach your stream - and as of a year ago, I do not stream or accept commissions of adult artwork. A few of my stream regulars are underage or uncomfortable with adult material as well. I see that Tigerdile has a SFW mode now, but that the site has been flagged by paypal, and the FAQ still states that the site is for adults only. What do you guys think - is the SFW mode secure enough? Additionally, I see that viewers have to login to not only participate in the chat but even see it, and I'm not a fan of that model of stream participation. (I want my viewers to go through as little effort as possible to be allowed to participate.) I do like that you can customize your offline screen image though, as well as have a banner and description. I am weighing the pros and cons and trying to consider it carefully.
Are there any other streaming services you guys would recommend? I have used Ustream (yuck) and Livestream in the past. I do not like the format of Join.me for art streaming purposes. Anything beyond that... suggest away!

So for Anthrocon, my bff K and I will be doing a joint "Butt Panel" in the art show - a collaboration of panels literally only consisting of tasteful pin-ups focusing on butts. (We will also both have normal panels of our own art separately in the general section as well, but (butt) that's not relevant to this post.)
So my CLEARLY SUPER SERIOUS CONCERN is this: I am curious what Butts the public wants to see for my contributions to this Magnificent Buttshow! If you have an anthro animal specie whose butt you'd enjoy seeing depicted, please let me know in the comments on this journal! Additionally, if you want to volunteer your own character's butt for depiction, link me a reference and I will consider it!*
*If I wind up selecting your butt to illustrate for the show, it is IMPORTANT TO NOTE that by volunteering your butt you agree to waive all claims to the particular depiction of your butt that I create. You will receive digital documentation of your butt that you are then welcome to display in your own personal gallery, but the original of your butt will go for bidding in the art show. If you decide you want the original, you must bid on your butt like anyone else, and you will not be compensated for use of your butt's likeness beyond receiving the digital photo of the piece. I also reserve the right to tweak your butt's design to better fit the work of art, and so by volunteering your butt's likeness I may decide to depict a similar but (butt) not precisely identical design of animal butt. If I do not select your butt to illustrate, please do not get butthurt! Butts with fairly naturalistic and pleasing designs are more likely to be selected than butts that are neon pink or something, however you are still welcome to volunteer your butt regardless of its appearance. I will check it out and at least consider it. This paragraph constitutes my official Terms of Butt Service in this matter, and if you are at all uncomfortable with them or the notion of the likeness of your character's posterior being auctioned off in public, DO NOT volunteer your butt.
Butt volunteering is a concept courtesy of a few of my stream regulars, so blame/thank them for the opportunity, haha.
At any rate - if you wish to influence what hind quarters I wind up crafting into existence between now and July, have at it! Suggest away! :D

Commissions are currently: Closed.
Other than in stream or when prior arrangement is made, work is not done on a commission until AFTER payment is received! (Only blanket exceptions are fursuit work (paid in installments) and Avarice work.) Queue spots are only set in stone when payment is received, be it full payment or some form of deposit. Unpaid slots can be added to the queue, but when they are paid jump above any other unpaid slots.

Another update on the group pictures, for those who don't happen to catch 'em on twitter.
Current Tavern Brawl WIP: http://anyarose.net/tavernbrawl_wip12.jpg
25% of the full res size. Characters are done, just working on a few background details now. 68 hours total so far. Almost there!!
Current Train Group WIP: http://anyarose.net/traingroup_wip3.jpg
Everyone is sketched now, and I'm in the process of cleaning everything up prior to color! (Except Stiggy, who escaped me seeing her last time I worked on it 'cause she's all the way up on the train, whoops. XD Gonna start with her next time haha.)
I am still closed to new big commissions, though I will open for a few slots sometime next week. Shall journal about it when I do.

For those who don't follow my twitter feed or attend my streams, just wanted to offer an update on the Tavern Brawl and the Train Group!
I've spent 55 recorded and a number of unrecorded hours on the Tavern Brawl so far, here is the latest WIP (at 30% the full size): http://anyarose.net/tavernbrawl_wip11.jpg
Most of the characters in the back of the Brawl are mostly done now and I'm working on the front cohort and background elements; aiming to get this done as soon as possible so then I can redirect the bulk of my efforts toward the Train Group, who I have appearing on my schedule three times next week. The status of that is I have drawn the train itself off the clock three times now and am still not happy with the composition. XD Once I have a full sketch I am happy with, I will post a WIP to my gallery like I did with the Brawl, so people can request adjustments to their characters etc as needed, so keep an eye out for that appearing by next week. :)
I decided to stay closed in general for new big commissions for the time being until the Brawl is done and Train is more firmly underway, though I am sometimes amiable to accepting small speedypaints/conbadges/icon-type things under 4 hours of work, since small projects are a nice filler to poking at very large ones.
Thinking of updating the examples on my price sheets and bumping my prices up a dollar or two when I do open again, will try to get around to that by the time I officially reopen my queue. Drawing for a living everyday has made vast improvements to my work in general over time, and I am forever grateful that by the power of all your commissions I can scrape by a living doing so.
Cheers, fuzzies! Thanks as ever for all your patronage. <3

The winner of the group picture vote is the Tavern Brawl!
Setting: You're at the Red Tavern, an old pub with a rough-hewn sort of quality, owned and operated by the scrappy and somewhat amoral Blood Raven. The usual crowd tends to be even more unstable than the time-worn building they occupy. Once the dust settles, no-one ever recalls how it got started in the first place - perhaps a few ill-placed words, a swiped bag of coins - but vicious brawls are far from uncommon. If you came looking for a fight, this evening does not disappoint. Soon punches and beer bottles are flying, claws and fangs flashing, tables flipped up for cover; observers are cheering or huddling protectively over their own pints, and Raven is content to let it happen so long as the victors respect his rules regarding the establishment's half-and-half looting rights on dropped patrons. Fancy a wee drink tonight?
How to participate: Drop me a note or a comment here indicating you would like a slot! I am going to shoot for a minimum of 8 participants and a maximum of 20. Slots will be $45 each. $45 is usually the same as 3 hours of painting from me, but for the purposes of making this picture extra awesome, I will spend 4 hours on the painting per participant! This means with 8 participants, this will be a 32 hour painting. At capacity of 20, it will be an epic 80 hour painting. Join up and get a chance to have a detailed painting of your character being awesome for a bargain price.
Examples of previous group paintings:
Battlestar Furs
Endless Wing Night
Chakat Picnic
Slots so far:
1. Drazii-Na - paid in full
2. Wolfy-Lupus - paid in full
3. Umbralfox - paid in full
4. Chaon -paid in full
5. Shimmortal - paid in full
6. Dana - paid in full

12. TallestBlue - paid in full
13. Rocker_Foxx - paid in full
14. Renardthatch - paid in full
15. Reve - paid in full
Thank you everyone who signed up! We have 15 participants, so the painting will be at least 60 hours long.

Perhaps I'm a bit of a masochist, but I find myself enjoying group painting work lately. It occurred to me that once I finish the chakat picnic piece I would like to arrange a big group picture with a fun and challenging theme like the Battlestar piece I completed awhile back.
Examples of me grouping it up~
Battlestar piece: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/11176908/
Wings Night: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12009892/
Current WIP of Chakat Picnic: http://anyarose.net/chakatpicnic_wip11.jpg
This journal is a serious inquiry to determine which theme a lot of you would be interested in participating in! What I would like to try is a large scale fight scene. I had three ideas. First was a tavern brawl. This would be an interior scene at possibly medieval looking bar/pub in which a drunken brawl had broken out. Bartender would be my character Blood Raven (yes, this would be the Red Tavern from his story, not that many know it.) Commission participants would be punching, literal table flipping, some patrons of the establishment cheering them on, some desperately trying to protect their drinks from the ruckus, and so forth. Second idea was a Dresden Files themed fight scene set in Chicago's Graceland Cemetery. Commission participants for this option could chose to be a protector of mortals or a monster, in the form of wizards, warlocks, vampires, wereforms, denarians, faeries, knights of the cross, or even just vanilla mortals toting guns. Magic flying, a storm brewing, violence afoot. Third idea was a Star Trek battle scenario set on a bridge at red alert. Commission participants would be lurching around, manning the helm and tactical, some firing phasers at a boarding party of borg, perhaps someone swinging a bat'leth.
So I am going to host a vote in this journal, and whichever theme wins I will organize as a commission for people to buy in to when the picnic piece is done.
Your theme choices, as described above:
1. Tavern Brawl
2. Dresden Files
3. Red Alert Bridge
Please vote in the comments! If you are interested in more than one theme you are welcome to say so, but definitely indicate which would be your first choice. Thank you. :D
Edit: Going to leave this vote open until Friday morning! Whatever has the most votes by then will be the winning choice.

animal-and-anime-lover is in danger of loosing her home and pets if she can't get funds coming in faster. She has an adorable art style and has improved a great deal in the time I have known her - if you can, please consider helping her out by commissioning her!
