Anthrocon 2013: A (Mostly) Amazing Time
Posted 12 years agoI'm finally settling back into post-con life and PCD has mostly been numbed by my job hunting as of late. First off, I had a spectacular time just as I have come to expect from Anthrocon. While the con has grown so large as to be more of a speed dating meet-and-greet with old friends, it's nice to see familiar faces and hit up a few panels here and there. Even though I was there Thursday morning through Monday afternoon, there was just so much to do that I still didn't see everything. I didn't even once go into the Art Show and only touched the Artist Alley for a minute on Sunday.
I just want to touch on the highlights and, unfortunately but inevitably, the falters for this year.
Why it was Amazing
■ I got to see old friends, including Strobes, Gale_Frostbane, Kaden, Atrus, Glelin, D Walker, Nyxsiern, ImaginarySkye, Atsu Fawx, Vince, Shiro, Sozan, Shia, TyFusky, and Mikey in no particular order. I'm sorry if I forgot anyone. I saw so so many people this weekend that it's hard to remember who all was even there!
■ Made a lot of shiny new friends, including Fumon, Ami, Crendrel, and some other random people in the street.
■ Rooming with homelesstaco, Glelin, Kaden, and Atrus was a blast. Many bottles of alcohol were demolished!
■ Kickass parties! Thank you Strobes, Gale_Frostbane, and Mikey.
■ The chance to chat with Term and FayV at the Zoo about Weasyl and it's future. It was really enlightening, and I promise I'm not just sucking up! ;)
■ Impromptu Queen and Abba piano singalong concerts in the Westin lobby. Videos may be posted later.
■ Saw pretty much all the dance panels and events and a fursuit performance panel with TyFusky.
■ Sardyuon was spectacular, and I really hope he's there again next year.
■ Found some neat gifts for people, like an elevator con shirt for homelesstaco.
■ The hotel staff was wonderful to us as always!
■ For the first time in recent history, the elevator line was actually tolerable. It was still pretty slow, but a lot faster than last year.
Where it Went Wrong
■ Didn't get to buy anything for myself :'(
■ On Monday morning, the elevator situation deteriorated to a dangerous level. Elevators were only coming every 10-ish minutes and packed. Supposedly — and this makes sense — the elevators were put into service mode for some reason. Unfortunately, it seems that the Westin's elevators are not on individual circuits and when one goes into service mode, they all do. This means that every elevator stopped at every floor. Everyone on lower floors got on going up, so no one above, say, floor 7 could get on.
As a result, guests on higher floors had to trek down the narrow stairwell with their luggage, fursuits, etc. This created a major safety hazard! Many people, including myself, were nearly tripping down the stairs and climbing past one another. Had someone fallen and been hurt, this could have become very serious.
■ The convention center parking garage had highly (probably intentionally) misleading pricing. When entering on Thursday, there was a sign with bold red lettering stating "Event Rate: $10 Daily" with no other information. The standard sign behind it had time-based charges and a charge of $20 for >15 hours, but it also has a separate line stating "Event: $10." Not "$10 for <15 hours." Just simply $10. Any normal person I believe would understand this as meaning that during events such as Anthrocon, parking for the duration of the event is $10 per day.
Leaving, I was shocked to receive a ridiculous $90 parking charge! The garage is managed by a third party, so there is nothing the Westin or convention center can do to help, and because the garage doesn't make more money from happier customers, they don't care about what you think. I couldn't reach a manager, and the woman in the cashier office seemed to have more important things to do than talk with another human being. She only explained that the event rate is just for less than 15 hours (none of this is stated on signs), so I'd have to pay $20 per full day, and yes it's misleading, but that they could do whatever they want and I have to be happy with it.
In the End
Long story short, I plan to return to Anthrocon next year, but I hope the Westin continues to improve, and I'll be traveling by train. I'd rather give my money to someone who actually cares about their customers and isn't interested in just ripping them off.

Anthrocon 2013 Here We Come!
Posted 12 years agoSince AC is the biggest con of the year, I figure I should do the meme and let everyone know I'll be there. I go more for seeing people than for anything else, so please give me a shout if you want to meet up!
Meme stolen from Katie.
Where are you staying?
I'll be in the con hotel! Managed to grab a reservation as soon as they went live.
What day are you getting there?
Sometime on Thursday after a drive with Homelesstaco.
Who will you be with?
I'll be rooming with Homelesstaco, kaden, Atrus, and a non-fur friend John. During the con, I like to bounce around between friends, so I could be with anyone at any given time.
Do you do free art?
I'm not an anthro artist, but if you want me to doodle a design in your notebook, I may if I'm free.
Do you do trades?
Again, not an anthro artist, but I can doodle designs and would love to throw some ink in your notebook in exchange for something in mine.
Do you do commissions?
For commissions, there isn't anything I can make at the con. However, if you're interested in the things I make, talk to me about after the con.
What are your limits to drawing?
Anything I draw is oriented towards calligraphy brush designs.
What is your gender?
Outie.
How old are you?
24.
Can I talk to you?
Can you place nouns and verbs together? Then please do! I love chatting.
Can I touch you?
Hugs for greetings are okay. Creepy touching is not okay. If you feel the need to ask, then probably no.
Can I hang out with you?
Sure! It's what I'm there for.
How can I find you?
If you know me, you probably know what I look like. If you can't find me, a private message on Twitter or here will get my attention.
Can I buy you drinks?
If we're friends and/or are hanging out at the bar, a drink is always appreciated!
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Hugs are great! Snuggles are reserved for the special.
How tall are you?
I'm 5'11", so good luck finding me based on that alone.
Are you nice?
Mhmm! Even if I stub my toe and get mad, I'm still nice to everyone XD
Can I stalk you?
Just say hi 0.o If you need to stalk me, then you probably shouldn't.
How long are you going?
Thursday through Monday, all day every day.
Do you have an artist table?
Engraving glass all weekend would kill my hands, so no.
Do you like parties?
Uh yeah!
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Yell my name, poke me, or throw something at me that won't cause permanent damage.
Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
Somewhere in Pittsburgh within a 3-mile radius of the convention center.
What/where will you be eating?
Wherever all my friends want to go. We sort of meander as a group on a whim.
Can I look in your sketchbook?
Sure! Especially if I can look through yours, too.
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
I'd love for you to! I have some calligraphy and brush markers on hand if you don't have any drawing instruments.
Can I take your picture?
If we're in the public space, sure. If we're in a private gathering, please get my attention first.
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
The same as every con: Have fun, see old friends, make new friends, and not give a crap about anything for a weekend and just relax!

Posted 13 years agoIt's 9:20 PM, I finished packing the booze... I mean my clothes... for MFF. Now I'm bored and being drawn into writing a meme.
Staying at:
The Hyatt Regency O'Hare
How are you traveling?
A 12-ish hour drive that will surely be as exhilarating as last year's.
Who are you rooming with?
Some other Penn State furs.
tiamoke,
whistleatra, Atrus,
-kaden-
Who will you be with?
Probably bouncing around between different people. I like to be social at these things!
Where will you be? How is the best way to find you?
I'll probably be either lounges or the Den. Best way is to find me is to message my cell if you have my number, or DM me on twitter, dakotamalamute.
What do you look like?
What are you getting at? 0.o
What is your gender?
That which has outward-protruding genitalia.
How old are you?
Old enough to go to the bar if you offer me a drink.
Are you mated/in a relationship?
Now this is just getting personal... o.o
How tall are you?
5'11"
Can I talk to you?
Yup! Just make sure you actually start by talking to me and not running up and squeezing me, unless I know you super-duper well already.
Can I hug and/or snuggle you?
Hug? Sure if we're friends. Snuggle? Only those few who I hold really close. If you have to ask, probably not, unless I'm really intoxicated, and even then just maybe.
Are you nice?
Mhmm!
Are you cliquey?
I try not to be. If you're interesting, I'll hang out with you.
Are you fursuiting?
Sadly no. One of these days I'll get a suit.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Tap my shoulder. Yell "hey you" or my name. Hand me a martini. Any of these things will work, really.
Can I ask you to dance with me during the dances?
Well I'll be at the dance, and I won't be sober, so sure!
Can I buy you drinks?
Is that even a question?
Do you attend parties?
Of course! If you shoot me an invite, I'll likely make an appearance.
Can I take your picture?
I don't mind. Just ask first and don't creep.

Posted 14 years agoWell, I'm back from AC and, despite it being Tuesday, still recovering. I consider it a good thing when I'm still wiped out two days after the con :)
AC 2011 was fantastic! I didn't really go to many panels or events because I spent the entire time bouncing around between people and socializing, which is okay because I only see most of these people a few times a year. Basically, I was mostly in the Dealer's Den, Zoo, and the dances.
homelesstaco is a new fur at Penn State, so he and his girlfriend
thissquirl and I drove in and hung out when I wasn't being all super ADD all over the place. They're both awesome and I can't wait to see Taco again in the Fall =D I'm just sad that I missed Taco's car turning into a tricycle.
At the Den, I saw the absolutely fabulous
DArtJunkie and
caribou. They are not only wonderful artists, but also wonderful people to know. There's just something nice about artists who go to cons not only for just making money, but also for seeing people, having fun, and giving back to the community.
I spent a lot of time just loitering around and watching
Efenrai draw stuff or suit. We also went to
November's parties and... holy crap... I don't think I've ever drank so much wine in one night and had such delicious cupcakes ever in my life! Oh yeah, and f**k flight attendants. It turns out there were a bunch of flight attendants in the room across from the party suite, and they called the police on us without any sort of warning. So, in the midst of an awesometastic party, the sheriff and two hotel managers showed up and split us up. A Dorsai guy also came to warn us, but the sheriff beat him to it.
Other people I was seen with a lot:
HF0x110 could only make it one day unfortunately, but it was his first con and I hope he had fun :)
SarusTreeleafWolf who got lots of squeezes!
zharr18 who is just a cool guy
Kalendil because I don't know anyone else as awesomely chill
Tiamoke
atruscoon and
Dragonfang from back at Penn State
wtfcartoonhero who gives bubbly hugs which I love :)
If I'm missing anyone, I'm sorry! There were so many people that I probably forgot some. Just yell at me in a comment :)
tl;dr; I saw a lot of amazing people as always and I had a fantastic time! And, if you're a flight attendant, November and I hate you.

Posted 15 years agoSo, according to FA, I have multiple identities running around posting comments on random people's journals...
... Sweet! Does this mean I have multiple personality disorder? Maybe I was really really drunk two weeks ago. Or, maybe FA is just screwed up again? The first two sound fun, but I can guess which one it really is.
[edit] Right after I posted this, the FA twitter stream updated to tell us about a planned outage next month for a power supply upgrade. Because twitter updates are more important than fixing a database clusterfuck. Good job.

Posted 15 years agoWoooo!!!! I'll be at FCN as of like 3 or 4 am tonight :D
Keep an eye out and feel free to stop me to say hi and whatnot. Usually I'll just be out-and-about, and I'll occasionally be in a boarder collie suit I'm borrowing from

School Update
Posted 17 years agoHuh... I need to update this more often. The last time I updated was when I was stuck in the middle of a desert over the summer with a project team.
School has been so-so. This year hasn't thrown too many surprises at me, but has been rough none-the-less.
Tiamoke keeps telling me I need to cut down on my work load, so I'm going to try to take less credits this Fall and schedule a fencing class for a little recreation.
Um... other than that, I guess I'm going to try to update this page more often. I need to make time to work on modeling more so I can post some things here.
Oh, and I'm excited because I'm finally ordering parts for my new computer!!! I got a mega-case for Christmas plus money for parts. I've been idling waiting for deals or something to happen, but Tiamoke finally pushed me to just shut up and order some stuff. A nice board, Intel Core 2 Quad, and 2 gigs of DDR3 2 GHz RAM will be here on the 26th.
My old computer is a bit.. well... it runs alright, but it's old and is having a hard time handling everything I throw at it. That, and it's a stock HP, so it's pretty nice, but difficult to upgrade.

From the flooded streets of Newark to the face-melting heat
Posted 17 years agoBefore anything else, thank you to everyone who I got to hang out with at FAU. I had an amazing time while it lasted, and kudos to all the hard-working furs who made the weekend possible. I'm glad to have met a few new people, and I can't wait to get back with you all again at FF and MFF.
As I write this, I am sitting here in the middle of nowhere wondering what I'm doing and wtf is going on. Let me tell you how this happened.
About 9 months ago, I joined a student space flight project at my university. I won't dive into the boring specifics of the project for your own sake, but just know that the project has been harder than a fox dick in SecondLife. It's been one catastrophic problem after another, especially on my end of things, and I've been stressed to hell all summer in a panic to get a year worth of work done in a few weeks because the project took a bad turn at the last minute and everything had to be revamped.
Anyway, it turns out that FAU was the same weekend as when I was supposed to fly down to Texas for testing and integration before flight. This was no big deal - I just had my project manager buy my flight tickets seperate from the rest of the team, and I could leave FAU a little early and fly out of Newark. In a mad rush, I finished everything I needed on the project for integration, and I left for FAU.
I had a blast at FAU. I went from on-the-verge-of-a-stroke to relaxed and happy. I even found a Penn State alum, and he and his girl and I had a good time hanging out for a while.
Sunday came, and I had to leave before anything opened up at the con so that I could catch my flight. That's the point where I was hit square in the face with worse-than-usual PCD. I went from a happy place to the middle of freakin' nowhere - Palestine, Texas. And no, it's not pronounced like you just read it. It's pronounced pail-steen.
So far, integration has been horrible. During every minute, I'm either worrying my brains out trying to fix major issues on-site or overcome major dilemmas (such as not having the right equipment to purge our flight vessel), or I'm stuck with nothing to do while waiting for other people, and that downtime just gives me more time for my nerves to get shot.
Right now, though, everything seems to be going well. Our payload is chilling out in the vacuum chamber down here, being cooled to make sure we don't go 'poof' during flight.
Once this week is over, I plan to crash for a few weeks at home and not do jack-all for a while. I need a break. Maybe I can even find some time to get back into the habit of practicing digital art or something.

Post-AC
Posted 17 years agoWell... I got back from AC late last night. I had an amazing time, and thanks to everyone who stopped me to talk while I was there. I ran into some old friends like Wally and Saurin, and a few new faces pulled me aside too.
I wish we could have stayed an extra day before and after, but it just couldn't happen this year. The weekend went by in a flash, so PCD is hitting me pretty hard, especially now that I just worked 12+ hours the day after returning to my empty apartment.
Anyway, I'm rather happy with how the weekend went, and I came home with a ton of loot from the con ^.^ I need to find some more wall space.
I'm already looking forward to next year!

A Malamute's Personality
Posted 17 years agoI've seen a lot of people posting journal results with this personality test, so I figured I may as well jump on the bandwagon.
All in all, it's pretty accurate.

New avatar
Posted 18 years agoWell... I commissioned
FoxFeather a while back at Midwest FurFest for a conbadge, and I'm happy to say that it's finished. My new avatar is a cropped version of it, and I think it's absolutely amazing. If anyone is considering getting a high-quality, hand-painted badge, I'd definitely suggest going to FoxFeather.
Also, if anyone is wondering what happened to the other submission I had, it's been removed due to some conflicts. Don't worry - I'll have more things up soon enough.

New Account At Last!
Posted 18 years agoHewwos all!
I used to be Drachon on here (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/drachon/ ), but that user name was very outdated, and it's not even my fursona name anymore. I've always wanted to make a new account under the name Dakota, but I never really got around to it, and someone else beat me to it *eyes up the other Dakota* But no worries! I finally took care of my old user name that was well beyond its expiration date.
I'm going to start posting some of my practice work as I break in my new tablet and familiarize myself with different digital inking, coloring, and shading techniques. Hopefully we'll see improvement as I go along.
P.S. Credit goes to
Nduli for my icon. She drew an amazing front portrait of me as the maiden drawing of my sketchbook.
