Pride YCH are OPEN!
Posted 4 months agohttps://www.furaffinity.net/view/61077609/
If you haven't checked it out already, I am open for my Pride YCH icons once more!
Stay tuned for other pride-related YCH. A portion of all sales will be going to support a former colleague in the pride & remembrance run (which donates to a number of local queer charities).

Of Community and Boundaries
Posted 5 months agoHeya! I wanted to clear out my last journal post, as I have done a bit more retrospection since i posted it 4 months ago.
What am I up to? I'm overwhelmed. Between full time work, a design group project and being onboarded as staff for one of my favourite events, I am busy. It is a good busy. I enjoy what I do, or as best I can, one day at a time. Some days feel more overwhelming than others. This is the slippery slope of burnout I got stuck in last summer, hence why I've taken steps to prevent that from happening. My schedule this summer? Canfurence (probably?) in August and Camp Feral. That's it! Everything else is loosey-goosey, wibbly-wobbly, do-not-expect-me-to-show-up sort of things.
When I last said i was "taking a step back from furry things", that was a half truth.
I realize I enjoy this community, the furry cultutre, to an extent. There's something magic about the boundless creativity, the characters and aesthetics that arise in this space.
But.... there's a big "but" here.
Darby is a character. Darby is a fictional avatar, an extension of my identity in a particular lens, in a particular space. It's a facet of me. A shallow sliver.
I have come to realize, in 2+ years of heavy furry and local community event involvement, the amount of people who care about the entire Darby-person, *ME*, aren't as numerous as I thought.
Let me share my perspective, and recognize that the following is 100% my subjective opinion.
The GTA furry community space is one piloted by egos, where "drama" can and has exploded in ways that have destroyed events, friend groups and facets of community. I have witnessed this firsthand, and don't want to go into details because I recognize I only have "half" the story, nor am I owed the full explanation. As such I don't want to risk misleadingly spreading misinformation. Lemme ask you something:
What good is a community that doesn't communicate honestly?
What good is a "safe space" that refuses to acknowledge its history, its shortcomings, and learn and grow from them?
If you love and care about your peers, about the community and space you occupy, speak up. Be honest. Be accountable. If there's a problem, address it. We don't need to sugar coat and dance around the truth. Most of us are adults. ADULTS. Being a cute fox or whatever isn't an excuse to not be accountable for your words, your actions, and how you choose to express them. You can be UwU and also pay taxes. Plenty of furries thrive in that regard.
Calling my personal situation "stepping back" was easy... until my therapist pointed out I talked a lot about furries, which i wanted "nothing to do with".
So now... I have boundaries.
I have furry spaces, people, communities I still love. They just aren't as frequent or numerous. I don't need to be out partying, howling and whatnot all the time. I still enjoy these things, but in the words of professor oak: "There's a time and place for everything."
Right now my time and energy is better spent elsewhere. I'm still here. Still alive. Trying my best to be honest, easygoing, chaotic, flirty (?), funny, cute and every part of me.
I am so loved, and I hope you are too.

Where in the hey is Darby
Posted 9 months agoHey! Hello! Happy January!
Anybody read these things, even?
My 2025 resolution has been to count how many dogs I see each day. I'm very excited for the raw dogdata I will acheive by the end of the year. Cause new years resolutions are fake and kind of a mess so I wanted to try something low stakes! It's definitely already opened up a level of awareness to my environs that will no doubt come in handy (I'm already pretty perceptive, so this will make the bonuses stack when I'm birdwatching, haha!)
As far as interactive art communities on the cyberwebs, i think FA may be the one where I am most active. "Wait seriously?" you say, "don't you only upload here like every other month?" Yeaaaah. Listen, I've had the same deviantart since I was 12. That "art" site barely qualifies for the title anymore, with its embrace of AI and also huge lack of moderation. God bless DA for exposing me to way too many fetishes and curious sonic fanart when I was probably far too young. ๐ซก It's a tough heckin world to be drawing fun goofy stuff.
Having procreate now has definitely allowed me to goof off and doodle for fun more often, but outside of commissions so much of my art feels selfish. I'm drawing a lot of OCs from my dnd campaign, so they are of interest to perhaps 3-10 people at any given time and sometimes it's tough trying to give context to so many layers and literal years of character building and roleplay. I play with some pretty intense theatre folks, lol. We go hard. It's great! But it's the kind of stuff that's a little hard to throw into the internet ether without context.
It's a bit like... back when i first joined DA, I suppose. So much of my early "furry" content (there was a good 8+ years between when i started drawing those characters and when I joined online furry communities like FA) was very self indulgent, for me and my 2 friends who knew who the hell Tigercharm or Tammie or TCT were and didn't need the lore drop to find my jokes funny.
I've had a window open on my computer for at least a month of my old fursona, TCT (that canadian tiger), partially cause I want to redraw it. https://www.deviantart.com/torpidti.....Game-113685017 Look at this nerd!
But yeah. This isn't even an explanation, more like a ramble. I have for the last few months been informally stepping away from furry spaces. I've been trying to be selfish and take care of my needs first. I hate hate HATE the word "drama", and this truly has nothing to do with any one group, event or individual. I like furries, I love Darby the gerbil, but ultimately Darby isn't all there is to me. In the words of Taako from the Adventure Zone "I'm multidimensional, I'm a fully realized creation! Fuck!"
I went to a party last week where it felt like the only thing folks could talk about was how fun their last con was and how much fun the next con was going to be. Because I'm waitlisted for the FE dealers den, it's unlikely I will be attending the full weekend of my local convention. It's just not as big a priority. I'd much rather do something lowkey and play D&D with my buds, lol. Cons are great opportunities to connect, and to meet new people! I love cons! I just don't need to prioritize that space.
I hate and fear that I sound "judgy" when I'm pleading my case like this. Again, it's nothing personal. I just got other shit to do.
TL;DR, I'm around, probably. I got things on the move, so may be a little slower to respond. But yeah. It's nothing personal. Thanks for listening.

Back online!
Posted a year agoWe're cool to get back on here now? Excellent, gucci. A lot of this FA fiasco happened while I was out in the woods (literally), but I'm here now! Hi!
This has been... a busy summer. Too busy. I'm exhausted and burnt out. This is my first time dealing with that reality, and it SUCKS. But I'm here! I've stepped away from many of my social groups as I focus on reprioritizing things, namely working to improve my skillset and find a better job.
What does this mean for FA? Well, I've been slowly reducing my social media presence over the last few years... I'm only really active on here and Instagram. My instagram is semi-personal, so that leaves FA for all my fun silly art! Seriously, I was worried we were gonna lose it permanently. I've practically abandoned every other art platform. I've heard some folks are trying Cara? Maybe I'll take a look when I'm less *hand gestures*.
Speaking of, if you aren't following my announcement channel on Telegram you should absolutely check that out! That is where you will get the swiftest updates about what I'm up to ! and art things! Especially for YCH and commissions. Check it!

Summer! It's busy!
Posted a year agoHot dang! Happy summer. Feels like it really body slammed us this year. She's been toasty and humid.
Anyway, here's a little update! I'm alive, I'm kicking, I'm grooving!
This summer is proving to be extremely busy for me. But in a good way!
((Pssst, if you want the most up to date news about whatever the heck I am up to, including badge preorders and commissions, you should follow my announcements channel on telegram https://t.me/darbingtondesign))
First off, I'll be at Anthrocon in July! This is the first ever US convention I have ever attended. I'm very excited to get to meet new folks, see what Pittsburgh has to offer, and buy SO MUCH MERCH. I've been saving up some cash since I decided I was going late last year, and exchange rate be damned I am excited to see and support a TON of artists I have followed online for years! It's so exciting, gosh!
Next, I will be tabling at Canfurence in Ottawa August 2nd-5th! I'm very excited to give this con a shot. Dealing last year didn't pan out for me... but I'm grateful for the opportunity to give it a shot again and spend some time with my partner and friends.
Lastly, I'm going to Camp Feral, baby! This event was HUGELY POPULAR this year, and sold out within minutes. I am happy to report my infamous panel from last year will be making a return. She's cool, she's feathery, it's "How to get EVEN MORE excited about birds"!!!!! I am looking forward to some chill camp time, and birds, and also just... touching grass lol.
Hot dang! Busy busy. On top of this I'll likely be lurking around Toronto's Pride festivities next weekend (including suiting in the parade with Fierce), I'm going to a friends wedding and taking some time to better myself and improve my skillset. Big priority for me is getting myself a better job (tldr, reached a skill ceiling, def underpaid, boss is a dick) which I know isn't an instant process but I'm... getting there. I'm rooting for you too!
I know Artfight is starting up next monday too and I'll likely jump in on that for a few attacks. I just love getting to draw other folks' characters. Here's my profile in case you wanted to check it out https://artfight.net/~darbington
That's all there is! Happy summer. Stay hydrated!

Heya! Spring!
Posted a year agoHeya! It has been a busy year so far, and a busy spring. Busier... than i was perhaps hoping. But I'm still here!
First off, thanks to everyone who stopped by my table at the Dealer's Den at Furnal Equinox. It means the world to get to see other folks enjoy my art. Thank you to everyone who bought something, commissioned me, said hi, or even hugged my Djungelskog plushie, haha! This fandom is so boundlessly creative, and I love getting to play in that space and be allowed to draw so many neat characters!
My next con will be Forest City Comicon, in London (Ontario)! This is my hometown convention, I vended here once EONS ago and I'm excited to see how the event has evolved and grown. If you're local, please swing by and say hi!~
I've also applied to vend at Canfur, we'll see if that pans out (it would be very cool). Otherwise, I am attending Anthrocon for the first time this summer! This is my first non-local con... ever!! Wowie!
Spring is busy, but like a good busy, and I'm still getting to enjoy the things and folks I enjoy. My D&D campaign is going strong, and I've become a Procreate artist in the process too. Gosh I love that app!
Also, I am open for commissions! You can find my most up to date prices, as well as a snippet of what I'm up to over on my telegram channel. https://t.me/darbingtondesign I post art stuff! And when I'm offering particular sales. You can expect my annual pride YCH icons in June!~
Hope yall are doing alright!

Artfight, Toronto Fringe Market, Skipping out on Canfur
Posted 2 years agoHello hello you beautiful animals!
Back when I was eternally active on deviantart (in middle school, circa 2009), I was posting journals almost daily. Mostly recounting my various tweenage antics. I don't think DA even lets you post journals anymore, or they've been rebranded as something else, anyway all this to say I've definitely jumped off the "active posting" train a long time ago.
Some fun upcoming stuff for me:
- I will be joining artfight again this year! Most of my characters are furry-adjacent at best (there's a lot of D&D guys), but feel free to check out my profile. If you attack me, I will 100% attack back! https://artfight.net/~darbington
- I will be tabling at the Fringe Visual Market next weekend (July 8-9th) as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival! I'll have my usual stock (stickers, pins and prints) as well as a few fun new treats. This is the first non-furry event I have tabled at in some time, and I'm excited to see how my wares fare with a more mainstream crowd! You can learn more about the event here : https://fringetoronto.com/fringe/visual-fringe Also Fringe is fun go see some cool theatre if you're in town!~
- Though I was accepted as a dealer, I will be missing Canfurence this year. I've yet to go to this con and was very excited to go, but due to personal reasons visiting Ottawa isn't in my future. I may be offering some digital art badges commissions for the con, as I came up with a fun YCH based on Canfur's theme and would hate for those to go to waste.
- I will be going to Camp Feral again at the end of August! It is truly one of the coolest furry events out there. Furry summer camp! Wow! I'll be opening badge commissions sometime in mid-July as well.
- Commission prices will be increased at some point in the near future. They've already technically increased but I have yet to formally roll that out in writing. If you're ever interested in something, feel free to reach out!
- Also I'm basically inactive on twitter now, woops. If you want to reach out to me directly, the fastest way is through telegram or insta.
If you're interested in whereabouts I am on the rest of the internet, take a gander below!

Open for Furnal Equinox Badge Preorders!
Posted 2 years agoYo! I'm sure you've seen my post about it already, but I'm doing badge preorders for FE again this year!
It runs March 17-19th, and the theme is "Tales from the Tavern"!
https://www.furaffinity.net/view/50711307/
I'm offering standard badges as well as two special YCHs fitting the theme!
I'm very excited. I didn't get a dealers den table this year, so this'll be my first furry event without tabling in a hot minute. Dang! I'm excited to meet people, see people, and dress up as a big journal!
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Back from Furnal Equinox!
Posted 3 years agoWoah I got so caught up in con prepping and preorders that I never made a journal about Furnal Equinox! I am back home now and 85% unpacked, woops!
It was so wonderful to get to table in the dealers den again. I graduated from a half to a full table, and it made me feel like a true "Big Boy" artist! Seriously, I had so much fun. Thanks to my roomies Blair, Dmitri and Tia as well as everyone who stopped by my booth!
What's next? I'll probably be updating a little slower for a few weeks. FE's my one con of the year (so far!) and I think I deserve to nap for 1000 years, lol! I'll also be working on posting my new prints and stickers and stuff in my online shops.
(If you haven't checked out my etsy, see the link below!)
https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/darbingtondesign
I'm still living the moment and blown away with how great things went this weekend! Thank you to every one who dropped by, everyone who trusted me with their characters (I had fun drawing every single one of them!) and all my friends for their incredible support. I love furries celebrate community and individuality in such a beautiful, loving way. It's something I've missed in these last two years.
FE 2020 was the first thing in my life that was cancelled due to Covid. Though I know troubles are far from over (and we need to continue to take care of one another), but spending the weekend at Furnal Equinox did a lot of good to me. A friend of mine called it closure. I'm very much a different person than I was two years ago, and that's ok! I'm thrilled to be who I am, and I'm so excited for what's next.
I will absolutely be applying for the dealers den again next year, so I will catch you on the flipside! Thank you, Furnal Equinox!

If you're a fascist please fuck off
Posted 5 years agoHi Hello
Given today's events I feel it's more important than ever to reiterate.
If you're a fascist, white supremacist, neo-n*zi or you voted for tr*mp my art is not for you! It will never be for you! It will NEVER be for you. Please see yourself out.
Same applies to racists, homophobes, TERFs and zoophiles~ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐
I'm pretty heckin privileged all things considered, and I'm gonna use what I've got to educate myself and raise the voices of folks who know what they're talking about far better than I do.
Furry is a community built for weirdos by weirdos, and shitty xenophobic buttholes aren't worth my time of day.
Keep each other close, and do what you can with what you've got.

Furnal Equinox 2020 Cancellation - What's Next?
Posted 5 years agoAs I'm sure you have heard, in light of the COVID-19 situation FE 2020 has been cancelled. As much as this situation stinks, it is ultimately a necessary decision in order to ensure everyone's safety and health. Cancellation hurts for me as FE is pretty well the only event I had planned on dealing at this year. Sometimes things fall out of your control, and as much as I would love getting to share my work with folks and hang out with friends as a giant gerbil, I'd rather people be healthy and take care of themselves first.
That being said, I've reached out to everyone who was looking to have badges for FE pickup. For the time being, I'll be doing either local pickups in the GTA (where possible) or shipping these items out wherever possible.
If you were looking to pick something up from me at FE, please check out my storenvy! I have my new Warriors pins, as well as all kind of goodies! The prices on storenvy are in USD, but I'm willing to honour my at-con (CAD) prices if you shoot me a PM and let me know what items you'd want!
https://darbington.storenvy.com/
If you were looking to score an at-con commissions, I am open for commissions pretty well indefinitely, you can check out the kind of work I offer below! Same as above, I'm willing to honour my CAD at-con pricing.
https://commiss.io/darbington
I think spiderdragon put it best:
"COVID-19 has caused significant upheaval for many artists because it has effectively shut down the convention circuit and forced many to self-isolate for their own safety and that of the people around them. These cons are their livelihood, and when artists are self-employed they do not possess employment insurance. I consider myself extremely lucky in that I am not crippled by these closures, but many artists are struggling so, please, if you were considering getting a commission or had a gift idea in mind for a while, donโt hesitate to reach out to that artist."
I am incredibly thankful for the support of folks in these difficult times. I'm lucky in that FE is my only event, and I'm employed fulltime elsewhere. Artists and creators need your support now more than ever! There will always be another Furnal, another convention, another chance to meet wonderful people and be a giant gerbil. Take some time, and if you have the means, throw a little love towards your small-time creators and artists <3.

Floof!! and Furnal Equinox 2020!
Posted 5 years agoI've been in con prep mode since the new year started, and I am beyond thrilled to be dealing at two incredible local conventions again this year!
Floof!! is February 7-8, and one of my favourite furmeet events of the year! Keep your eyes peeled for a fun, RPG themed badge YCH I will be making to mark the event's theme! I love Floof and floof doesn't get enough love. Seriously! Check out this event! You can buy tickets and learn more on their event twitter! https://twitter.com/Floof_Furmeet
As previously announced, I will be dealing once more at Furnal Equinox this year! It's wonderful to be back dealing at this event, FE means a lot to me and this year I'll be coming at ya with a FULL TABLE!! Last year I only had a half table, but I've decided to expand to better share my offerings! Also, extra leg space i guess??
As with Floof, I will be doing some specialty badges for FE's theme: Retro Rewind! Keep your eyes peeled for those, they're bound to be a lot of fun!
It's not too early to get in on the fun either! I am open for general badges for both Floof!! and Furnal Equinox, and you can check out pricing information below!
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/34624063/
In other news, my Warrior Cats pin kickstarter was a success! I just ordered the pins and they are due to come in time for Furnal Equinox. If you want to get in on the fun ahead of time, you can preorder them at my online store. Check out the link below!

Update and Art Fight!
Posted 6 years agoHeyo folks! Just wanted to check in and say hello!
What's fresh on my end? Well, last month I started a new job at a print shop. So far it has been a lot of fun, I'm learning and getting to overlook a lot of cool pieces, and I'm putting my design degree to good use! After a rocky start to 2019 in term of jobs, the print shop has been an incredible change of pace. I work like, a 9 to 5 now? I get weekends off? It's pretty neat!
In other news, after watching it from afar for many years I finally joined Artfight this year! I'll mostly be drawing stuff for random people, but feel free to check it out! I am on team Nightmare, whatever that means. You can check out my profile below!
https://artfight.net/~darbington
Anyway, thanks for stopping by. Summer is just beginning, it's ridiculously humid, but life is pretty alright! Let's hope it keeps up that way. Cheers!

Back from FE! What's next?
Posted 6 years agoWoops this journal is like a week late, but I'm back from an incredibly fun weekend at Furnal Equinox! It was great to see old friends and meet new ones, as well as be in the dealer's den for the first time. Thank you to everyone who dropped by my table and bought something from me!
I've already got plenty of ideas for next year's Furnal Equinox, but that's a whole year away. In the meantime, I've got lots of fun goodies in store. I'm hoping to design some new enamel pins over the summer, and would likely be raising funds for them via crowdfunding. If there's one thing in life I enjoy, it's definitely enamel pins. I love the Dragonsmith pins I got to design for my thesis, but I feel they're kind of niche and so trying to sell them on their own has been troublesome. But it's all good!
So, yeah! For those interested, commissions are still open (and likely will for a long while!). I'll have to design a new pricelist, because my old one is wayyyyy outdated! Regardless, thanks for stopping by and look forward to all sorts of neat things coming out on my end in the future!
Cheers!

Upcoming Conventions! Floof and Furnal Equinox
Posted 6 years agoHowdy! As you've probably noticed from my last few posts and submissions, I am pushing commissions a lot this month and will continue to do so well into March. Why? Well I am tabling at two super great conventions and want to spread the love as far as I can!
I will be tabling at Floof! February 1 and 2 at the Delta by Marriot Airport Toronto hotel. I had so much fun at this event last year, I am beyond stoked to return and be dealing there once more! You can find all the further info you need on the event on their Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/events/386059875265540/
As to push commissions and get my queue finished early, I am offering discounted badge slots up until after Floof (meaning this is the price I'll be selling them at the con too!) After February 3, prices will increase slightly to ensure everyone gets a quality product in an efficient manner. You can find my current badge prices here! > https://www.furaffinity.net/view/30145638/
I will also be tabling at Furnal Equinox in the Dealer's Den this year! I had moderately good success selling pieces in the Artist Alley last year, and I hope the Dealer's Den will be kind to me as well. I have lots of new goodies, including my Dragonsmith merchandise from my thesis project! I hope my dragon friends can delight the furry crowd as much as they did my school peers. I am also offering commissions for pickup at that event, as I'll be easy to find! Check the link above if you're interested in snagging something.
Not much else to report! I am balancing two jobs, one of which is as a graphic designer (nice to use my degree, haha) as well as doing art and badge commissions on the side. So far things have been going pretty well on that end! I look forward to what's in store next.
I hope to see yall at both Floof and Furnal Equinox! I'm not shy, feel free to come say hello!

Wherever is cheap! Possibly the instant ramen I will bring to my hotel room! Who knows! Finding food at a con is part of the fun.
