My Review about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild
General | Posted 9 years agoSo i got myself a switch a few weeks ago with an extra pack of joy cons and the legend of zelda BotW (which cost me nearly 500€ in total, unfortunately its only possible to charge the joycons with the docking station, and the joycon charger costs again around 40€...so thats the downside.)
And it will be a Non-Spoiler review!
But yeah! Back to Breath of The Wild! I'll work up some Points step by step, so let's get started!
#1 Graphics:
From the moment on, i was fascinated about the visuals in BotW it was very colorful and wasnt looking depressive Tones as Twilight Princess, but instead a mix between Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. Alot of People prefer realistic graphics, but i prefer this kind of cel shading mix more. so its all opinion based! :)
#2 Story
Well the story is basic, but pretty deep! Your job is to gain control back from 4 Titans which are controlled by calamity Ganon, and there will be alot of backstory before the events when you started playing BotW, Link woke up 100 Years later, so the downside was that he lost all the memories about the People he all know and loved. So it's also important to go to specific Locations in order to make Link remember, and i have to say its very interesting and also shows the in-depth development of princess zelda, so if you get the game get all the Memory Locations, its worth it! :)
#3 The World
Welcome to the Land of Hyrule! Go explore! And i can tell you that this game has an even bigger map than skyrim, you have alot of places you can explore and places you normally WOULDNT explore, there are 120 Shrines where you can solve puzzles in order to get Spirit Orbs, the spirit orbs are similar to "Heart Pieces" get 4 of them to either
increase your Hearts or your Stamina meter, and also if you visited a shrine and activated it a new teleportation point is available!
In the overworld itself, there are many monsters waiting for you and alot of little details and secrets for you to explore, it literally blew my mind, you can go ANYWHERE you want either by climbing up mountains or walk a detour, its your freedom to decide, the game doesnt force you to do specific orders.
like i said above, it is possible to teleport to different locations, just be sure to activate the shiekah towers or the shrines to create those spots so boring backwalking is
also eliminated by this feature that you get early in game, fantastic!
Sometimes when i want to enter a titan i get distracted by shrines or monster caves/fortresses to explore and i like that!
#4 Enemies
Oh god...this ain't ocarina of time anymore i tell you...
What i mean is there can be very strong enemies around every corner, the enemies are exactly colored like in the original NES The Legend of Zelda, Red enemies are the
weakest, the Blue needs some more hits, black enemies are even harder and white enemies are the hardest to beat! and since the enemies come mostly in groups and carry
around different kinds of arsenal, you cant always go straight to strike enemies, especially if there is a guardman enemy with a horn to get his comrades to beat you up badly.
I died at least 140 times in BotW because i underestimated the enemies, and they can hurt you really badly...! so you need more strategy and its sometimes better
to sneak away from those enemies. its a challenge!
If you get lucky you can sometimes even find minibosses on the overworld which drop goodies :)
And...there are also those octoroc like things called Guardians, if you are a newbie in BotW, run away and hope to god that it will loose sight of link, of course
if you have the proper equipment you can take down those guardians but in early-game run away like you did with the SA-X in metroid fusion, the will mostly kill you
instantly because they can take away at least 9 hearts by one beam they shoot. and the music...its so unsettling...<3 love it!
#4.2 Bosses
The Bosses are very difficult in this game, not only that it is not obvious how to dodge or get an opportunity to strike, the game makes you think about the scenario and
attack at the right time or else you get the consequences! So it isnt as easy as in ocarina of time to just stun a boss and then attack...not in BotW....
#5 Weapons and Shields
Oooooh the weapons, thats what they changed the most about in this game!
So get this, your weapons can be either found on the ground, or around enemy basis, the weapon can be anything, even just a stick. but here is the deal: just because
you have a weapon, doesnt mean you can keep it through the whole game, the weapons break if you overuse them! there is no way of repairing those weapons so this
means you also have to be sure if you want to fight bokoblins with your strongest weapon just to break it, it also counts for the bows you can get.
so this means you cant just beat up enemies at sight because it might not be worth it so there is more strategy for you guys! you can keep the stronger weapons and use the weaker weapons against main enemies who dont take alot of hits.
and also every kind of weapon can be used by link differently for example link cant swing a hammer as fast as a sword, so your attacks can be delayed before hitting the
blow.
You weapons can be swords, scmitars, spears, bows, hammers, scythes, sticks, clubs etc, and it kinda reminds me of an RPG because of the attributes those weapon has.
Its the same with shields, the better the shield is the more hits it can take before it breaks and it can be used to slide down hills, especially in snowy lands, fun! :)
and if you have a wooden shield equipped and deflect arrows from your opponents, link will automatically pick up those arrows stick to the shield, its a nice feature!
One last thing: You dont always need a weapon to kill off enemies, be creative... ;) WINK WONK
#6 Stamina Bar
Or circle? anyways! Anything you do, is it running, climbing, swimming, pushing blocks, or gliding with the sail cloth decreases your stamina like in skyward sword.
it was never an issue for me in this game because it charges up pretty fast and you can increase the stamina by visiting the shrines and praying to a goddesses statue after
getting 4 spirit orbs! great feature!
#7 Puzzles
So most of the puzzles in this game need some more deeper thinking, its not obvious to hit a switch (hahahahahah) to open a door, the puzzles are more complicated this time around, especially when your inside the titans. and because there are no MAIN items like hookshot in this game you dont require any specific item to beat the titans (exception are bows and arrows, if you dont have those you are mostly screwed...so be sure to always have those!)
#8 Music
The Music itself is mostly quiet on the overworld, there are a few themes here and there but its understandable why there is none on the overworld, or would you like to hear
the hyrule field theme for good 2-3 hours nonstop? so the music is pretty quiet and there are a few fun easter egg in music, especially in the mountain area :)
And don't worry, the boss music is dramatic and full of energy! :)
#9 The Sword which can banish evil
You all know that sword...its deep in the lost woods...and its the only sword which cant break but instead lays to rest to recover.
if you found the sword deep in the woods, better hope to have some experience and hearts because you wont be able to pull out the master sword from the pedestal
so easily...it can be even fatal for you if you dare...
#10 NPCs
Alot of People are very remindable because of the character traits they have, they even sometimes walk around on the overworld and some even sell you good stuff!
they sometimes even fight against monsters for themselves, and me as a bastard was just watching the combat instead of helping hahaha.
#11 HEARTS!!1
....Where are they? Exactly, there are none! In order to refill hearts you have to find food like mushrooms or kill off animals to get meat, with that you can heal up, but also there is a feature in the game which is the best by far: Cooking!
You can roast or cook different meat mushrooms and plants together to cook yourself the ultimate healing solution! and sometimes even have attributes like refilling the
stamina meter. and you can also create elixirs by mixing bugs with monster goodies like nails, claws and hearts to create potions to gain temporarely immunity to cold for example! its by far the best thing about BotW.
if you dont have any food left, you cannot heal up, hearts dont exist, only fairies do. but only in specific areas.
so if you want to go into shrines or titans you always try to be prepared and cook shit up before going in to beat some baddies up!
Final Conclusion:
Breath of the Wild is a completely different Zelda Game and changes alot of the rules so you probably hate it or like me, love it! It is definetly one of the hardest Zelda Games I've ever played and is an Hommage to the original the legend of zelda, they nailed the zelda flair in such a different kind of genre! they did a great job on the game
and i would give you the advice to buy yourself a copy for either the switch or the WiiU! its worth it! :)
And it will be a Non-Spoiler review!
