Update to Davidi Hunt
General | Posted 7 years agoSorry that I haven't been posting on here lately...
There are three worlds in Davidi Hunt right now.
Personally, I would LOVE to keep going but I'm out of birthday presents. Needless to say, this art style is a LOT of fun to build for.
Of course, so is the style of Yure Goes Hop Hop. Sprites have to be higher quality though and can't be ripped from tilesets.
I have some adult responsibilities to take care of now, but for now, enjoy Davidi Hunt:

Unreal engine 4 experiment coming up soon
General | Posted 8 years agoHaven't updated on here for a while. Most of my followers are on my personal account that don't seem to come here for game design stuff.
ANYWAY.
So yes, Unity and I got together a little young, and she was pretty cruel to me. Unreal Engine 4...she's a wild one, but she's fun to play with. She won't make you reinvent the wheel every time She's got a decent character controller. She's got means to manipulate a camera easily. She's got a level editor, more components to choose from, and she's not so darn fat. She's still chubby, but not a memory/cpu hog.
When I finish my current committment in Unity (my sister's birthday present), I'm gonna go spend some more time with UE4. I'm gonna give my character Superbird an experiment, and maybe even hold a raffle here to give a random person a chance to be in it (I could use some extra experience with the Skeletal Mesh Animator component, which Unity doesnt't seem to have btw)
That's all for now. See ya.

Quick question.
General | Posted 9 years agoIf I port Superbird to the PC as a first person platformer, would anybody play it?
OH MY GEEKERS IT'S FINISHED!!
General | Posted 9 years agoI have finished the desktop version of Agent Lazer: http://www.davididev.com/displayGam.....p?id=%22AGL%22
After I get Agent Lazer ported to mobile, next on the todo list is Superbird.

Agent Lazer updated and MD06 is up
General | Posted 9 years agoAs you may have guessed, my last blog as an April Fool's day prank. I knew nobody would fall for it, but I thought it'd be funny anyway.
But yeah, long time no update. I made a mother's day gift and updated Agent Lazer. I'm also rethinking ads on Agent Lazer.
Mother's day: http://www.davididev.com/displayGam.....?id=%22MD06%22
Agent Lazer: http://www.davididev.com/displayGam.....p?id=%22AGL%22
Originally I was going to make it so that on startup, you get 3 continue tokens for watching an ad. Unfortunately, I have to get 5,000 impressions before I make ANY money, so I'm thinking of changing that to when you die, you can continue playing by watching an ad, and when you beat a boss, you can watch an ad to make your gun charge faster. It'll probably be several months (at least) before I can collect any ad revenue, as I only get $6-12 for every 5k impressions and I have to collect $100 before I can cash in.
So here's to hoping I can come up with an addicting idea where people WANT to watch more ads. :-/

Plans to make more money
General | Posted 9 years agoSo as some of you may know, I put ads in Becky DM...but it's not making me much money.
Of course, I don't have many users so as such it doesn't make much money. Micro transactions also will not make me too much because-- again-- very few users.
So I came up with another solution-- macro transactions.
Imagine it-- pay $5,000 to continue the level, or wait 30 minutes. $10,000 to unlock the stadium right away.
Expect to see it in my next mobile game. :D

General | Posted 10 years agoJust haven't been posting.
I was working on the Superbird prototype for FWA and now I'm coming back to my sister's birthday present. I finally have a good idea as of what to do compared to what I was GOING to do. Since it's cancelled, I may as well tell you:
Green and blue slimes able to use a laser cross and land mine.
I can't post the details on here as the game is supposed to be a surprise, but I will tell you this: it's not what the turn-based API in Google Play Services is meant for, muah ha ha ha. >:3

Heeeeello everyone
General | Posted 10 years agoWell, to kick off my new web hosting, I have an announcement.
As you may already know, I've been waiting for my VR headset for Android to come in...well, it came in last Sunday and I started coding on it in between work. The VR headset scripting only took me about 20 minutes to get right and I very quickly discovered mirrors DO NOT WORK ON ANDROID. This means that you will never see the main character while playing the game.
I also decided that I will make a platforming game. Yes I know I announced a shooter, but more of my family would be okay with a platformer over a shooter and family and close friends are a majority of my audience. Also the platforming game I want to make, well...I can do it for me. As excited as I am to show off my first VR game, to keep the rush going, I have to be doing it for me and not for anyone else. If I'm doing it for other people, as soon as they stop being interested, I don't have the drive to keep going. If I do it for me, like I did with Mystic Planet, I can keep going as long as I need to, such as, say, a year and a half (which is about as long as it took me to finish Mystic Planet).
Now while I hope to have a prototype done by Furry Weekend Atlanta so I can show it off to the convention, I won't be working on the actual game until AFTER I finish my current commitments: Agent Lazer and Becky's game. These will both be partially focused on new territories. Becky's game will use multiplayer options (turn-based), and Agent Lazer will have a leaderboard and ad revenue (you can relax-- it's just to earn things you can earn in game anyway. I'm not forcing them on anyone). Half of Agent Lazer's ad revenue will be given to the person who agreed to let me use his character, and the other half will be going to me.
The only other thing I can think to add is this: when I make the platforming game, I will NOT be waiting until I'm done to release to android. It's also going to be an android exclusive since I can't afford an oculus for PC and the two systems work very differently. I will release it in segments as they come around.
That's all for now. Peace out.

I have learned the secret of immorality.
General | Posted 10 years agoAfter centuries of searching, the age old modern quest for the secret to immorality has been discovered.
Be a jerk.
Be a jerk.
Ah that darn career
General | Posted 10 years agoSo the startup I've been working with, Raconteur Games...
I pitched Superbird to the boss, and he liked it. He said he has no idea when we will make it-- could be a year, could be three-- but eventually, it will be made.
...
...
Out of all the projects I've cancelled, this is the first one that, in the short term, I DON'T want to cancel. I'm having a lot of fun developing it, but when the time comes to make it with an actual team, I will be annoyed working on it if I already have an existing copy. So in the long term, if I continue it, I will eventually be unhappy.
So the question remains, what do I work on next? Well, I kinda prefer the idea of working on a big one. It's easier to do a lot of big work in the start and use all that work you did in the start to build a huge amount of content. But a lot of my big ideas may eventually be used by Raconteur...though not all of them. As far as personal projects, what I'd really like to make is Hannah's Quest III. I might drop the idea of cutscenes though. I'm sorry, but they take too long to render, and as I seem to keep forgetting, I'm a sucky artist. Making cutscenes will frustrate me. I tried it for Superbird...one cutscene and I didn't even make it past one clip.
Well, Hannah's Quest III is long overdue...

Superbird-- enter the scuba gear
General | Posted 10 years agoThe first real boss has been created in Superbird, and the first item you will ever win is here. I'm talking about Scuba Gear.
I also started using Sketchup the other day, and to dip my toes in the water I made a new Portal Room. It looks roughly the same as before, but I did add some lamps (which I made in Blender).
I also added a trail renderer to the sword blade. What does that mean, you say? Well, it makes a white swishy trail when you swing it. Swoosh!
Alright folks, go ahead-- go crazy! http://www.davididev.com/games2/sb/

Plans for Android...
General | Posted 11 years agoWhile I was developing a test game for fog.com, the Android SDK updated and the unserviced phone my sister gave me became useless for development (The game no longer compiled properly to Gingerbread OS). That’s about to change…I got a new unserviced phone in the mail with 4.1 OS (previously I had 2.3).
Don’t panic. I have no intentions to abandon Superbird. I’m going to get it to a decently playable part before I even start Android Development again. But just to give you an idea what you have to look in forward for…
There are two Android games I want to make.
One I already started but paused when I got the test from fog.com, and of course cancelled when I couldn’t use Android anymore– Emotican Wars 2. The computer version will be free, but I will use this as preperation for the second Android game. The Android version will have a one-time in-game purchase for the full version (Just $1, calm down), and at the end of every level (if possible), you can post screenshots of your victory on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr for extra currency. And no, you cannot buy Currency in this game, and it’s only used to buy npcs who can help you.
The second game will be a freemium game. It’s not the most ideal, but it will rely on FTP and SQL, which will no doubt cause Justhost to ask me for more money when I eat up all their “unlimited” bandwidth, but this is a game I wanted to make anyway. You basically spend credits by building a world that is played as a top-down shooter (think of the Contra side scrollers, except top-down like Zelda). To earn credits, you travel to other people’s worlds and fight monsters.
This freemium game has a kicker, though. You have to set an allowance on how much you’re allowed to spend each week, with the maximum spending at $10 a week. This is the only way I can build a freemium game without feeling like a total jerk.
My plans for the freemium game is to hire some graphic artists and split half of the profits with them. I’ll probably end up with multiple artists, so their share of the half will be based on a points system.
Anyway, that’s all I have for you right now. See you all on your phones soon!
Preview of the first quest in Superbird
General | Posted 11 years ago[See blog for video preview: http://davididev.com/blog/2015/02/1.....-in-superbird/ ]
So for those who know me in person, sometimes I say “May the spirit of the cheeseburger be with you.” Well now it actually has some meaning!
Obviously this level still has some work to be done…gotta add enemies in the forest (cute widdle kitty cats that hurt you to the touch). Before I can release the game, I need to make a handler for when Superbird dies, make the intro, and make a title screen, invent a new language to write the announcement blog in, and create renewable energy for the future.
Okay maybe not those last two. But anyway, this is all for now.

I made this instead.

oh yeah. You know how that video said one of the quests is to destroy the idol? I’m taking that out…

Just a talk on the structure of SB
General | Posted 11 years ago(View video here: http://davididev.com/blog/2015/01/3.....ave-this-here/ )
this is mainly a demonstration of the system. I still need to make mouse buttons for the portal room, make a handler for when Superbird “dies”, maybe add a demo of Tropical Land of the Tropics, and make an intro.
But if you’re interested in reading how the system works, read ahead!
There are two singleton classes to handle data: GlobalVars and DB. GlobalVars holds the actual values to the data (as well as data that gets saved), and DB holds the values of what they represent. For intsance, whether or not you have weapons is stored in an array of booleans in GlobalVars, but DB has an array of strings to represent what the weapons are called. Weapon 0 is called “Sword,” Weapon 1 is called “Lamp,” and Weapon 2 is called “Crossbow.” DB also holds the data of the level names, sub-level names / requirements to run the level / how many crystals are needed.
It’s a nice system and I like it. :D

Just a progress report
General | Posted 11 years ago(see blog for video: http://davididev.com/blog/2015/01/2.....to-superbird/)
Just thought I’d give a progress report.
Okay, there are still a few glitches with the physics system, I haven’t made the portal room or intro, and I don’t plan to release it until I have one real quest.
The quest in this video will be there, but it’s mainly an introduction to the game, so it’s not a “real” quest.
Anyway, just leaving this there…Publix and Raconteur games have been keeping me busy, so updates will be slow.
