DS: Awakened
General | Posted 12 years agoSo just a quick short review kinda deal on Awakened for you guys. Aaaaaaaabsolutely worth the money in my opinion. The promises of it being the most twisted messed up shit they'd done yet were pretty well backed up. The hallucinations lacking from Isaac's storyline in 3 that I'd seen a lot of reviewers complain about were made up for in Awakened. The religious fanaticism of the unitologists gets freaky in ways the other games haven't touched yet and some of the new enemy designs are insane. There are fights you have while hallucinating and the DLC as a whole gave me a pretty big adrenaline rush I haven't felt in a good minute with the series. I was more tense throughout the hour and a half that I played it than I was in a lot of 3, not to discredit DS3, just that Awakened is really freaking good IMO. It answers some questions that the end of DS3 might have left you with and ends leaving you without a doubt in your mind that DS4 is going to have some IMMENSELY MESSED UP SHIT going down. If you haven't played it yet you definitely should check it out.
DS3 Custom Weapon Sharing
General | Posted 13 years agoSuggested by
, throwing up a quick journal where people can share effective, destructive or just plain cool weapons they've made.
I'll kick this off with the two main guns I used in my first playthrough (or as best I can remember them since I haven't played in a few weeks):
Telemetry Spike / Ripper Blade + Damage Support / Acid Bath
This gun just ended up being stupid powerful, the javelins this shot combined with acid just wrecked everything's day and a suspended ripper blade coated in acid? Hello crowd control! Added damage support with the upgrade circuits I had towards the end made this thing just ignorantly powerful. Worked well against basically everything but I definitely noticed it handed the Feeders their asses.
Plasma Core / Hydraulic Engine + Damage Support / Stasis Coating
Can't go wrong with a plasma cutter, precise fast damage with added stasis effect makes it way easy to get enemies under control. I find that despite the stasis effect from Stasis Coating being WAY SHORT, enough shots will slow necros down enough for you to ruin a lot of shit and I like the idea of having stasis as long as you have ammo. The hydraulic blade is awesome for when stuff gets up in your face and is too close to really shoot, and lets be honest, there's a carnal catharsis that comes with swinging a blade right back into necromorphs with a "YEAH HOW DOES IT FEEL ASSHOLE SEE HOW MUCH YOU LIKE IT" kind of air haha. Melee weapons are always nice when things make you mad.

DS3 Review!
General | Posted 13 years agoSo I just pulled an all nighter to wrap up the last two chapters of the game and just wow whoa WHOA.
For the longest time since the rumors started surfacing, to when the demo came out I was totally skeptical of the whole action/adventure aspects slowly creeping into the series. I thought the game would be watered down, boring and totally awful but nope nope nope it's absolutely awesome. Yes the horror is pretty diluted compared to the first two games but I feel like the action/adventure (if you can REALLY call it that?) is actually done pretty well. Don't get me wrong, it is very obvious that EA is trying a little too hard to expand the target audience for the game by packing every blockbuster smash hit theme they can into the game but I was into the story too much (and too infuriated at the Unitologists and necromorphs, I started out on hard mode) to really be bothered by it. While I didn't go through the game feeling the solitary paranoia you get in the first game there is still plenty of pressure, anxiety and stress. The story (in my opinion, as is all of this obviously!) really adds to the series' overall history and universe, you learn and see some really cool stuff! Some of it is gross and horrible, some of it is actually really pretty and wonderfully rendered, and some is just outlandish and cool. Overall it's a fantastic game from a design perspective and it's just plain fun to look at.
There are 19 chapters and in the latter ones you see what really lies beneath the surface of Tao Volantis, from there to the very end of the game everything is given an exciting and at times mysterious, otherworldly atmosphere, more so than in the previous games.
In regards to my previous uncertainty about the weapons and item crafting systems, once you get into the game and get used to it it's actually pretty well done and DAMN can you make some awesome weapons (I played the last 1/3 of the game with a javelin gun/ripper combo that had the projectiles covered in acid, and a plasma cutter with a pneumatic blade that dealt temporary stasis with damage, they DESTROYED haha). Not super huge into the suit design in this game for the most part. I preferred the suits in DS2 but they get the job done.
This game comes down to your preferences. If you're really only looking to be scared and nothing else, this game isn't for you. The survival/horror aspects are diluted for sure compared to the first game. I think DS3 might be the deciding factor for who's a really big DS fan and people just looking for horror games. If however you're really into the lore of the series, I believe you're really going to enjoy it. The scares and startles can at times be juvenile and jumpy and the sense of overshadowing horror and tension that was present in the first game isn't really there as much but now that Isaac isn't an errand boy all alone with no personality whatsoever I feel like that's to be expected. I believe part of what made the first game so scary is with Isaac's lack of personality it was easier to put yourself in his place and that immersion really lent to the horror. Now that he has his own personality you take more of a spectator position but honestly I think I prefer it. I've become pretty fond of the personality he's developed since the first game.
Ultimately to really enjoy this game I think you need to step back and stop comparing it to the first game and expecting the same flavor of horror. Instead, try to look at it more as a freaking rad chapter from the same book, different pages but all part of a seriously great story in my eyes.
PS: heads up, there's a little hint at the end of the credits of another game again!

DS3 Demo Review
General | Posted 13 years agoGot hooked up with a code for the DS3 early access demo and just played through it. Definitely an interesting looking game, we'll see how it goes.
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS.
So there's some cool new controls if you guys haven't seen it. There's now roll and crouch which are useful. I actually at first thought they were having me hold down the right stick for the locator just to keep from accidentally using it (because who hasn't gotten flustered when trying to fight a necro that startles you and lost some health thanks to accidentally pressing the locator button instead of shooting?) but it's actually because pressing the right stick (in xbox at least, presumably in PS3 as well) is for the crouch. Double tapping the run button (left bumper on xbox) is the roll.
Weapons crafting is... interesting. Looks like there's tons of components and such to work with, it seems like it gets really in depth, like almost RPG status with this shit haha. Looks to me like nodes are a thing of the past and instead you get circuit components that are specific to improving damage/reload/capacity/etc. Also it seems like stores might not be a thing in this game? Or at least there weren't any in the demo. Instead there's an individual station exclusively for switching out and upgrading your RIG and your safe is now stored in benches. Which reminds me, you can use components to craft items at the bench like med packs, stasis modules, etc, further leading me to think stores might be gone in this game. Final note on this is that you also only get 2 weapon slots (unless you maybe can unlock a RIG later that lets you carry more but as far as I know only 2). Because you get so much customization this should make up for it but I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. The two guns you get in the demo are a good ol, plasma cutter and then a gun that is basically a combo of the Pulse Rifle and Force Gun, so rather than having four weapons you get 2 that can be two guns combined (if you have the parts). Oh, one more thing, you can add special parts to the guns for support effects like a splash guard which protects you from damage from explosive weapons, stuff that boosts stasis, a scope, one that automatically attracts dropped ammo to you, etc, etc. Still a little iffy about all this, like I said, the weapon crafting and item creation kinda feels like it's coming from an RPG and feels a little out of place in Dead Space but I'm sure I just have to give it some time.
As for the horror aspect of the game.... eh. I know lots of people that have played more for reviews say DS3 still has a solid horror element and this is only the demo but I get the impression EA might turn Dead Space into the next resident evil. Definitely vibes more towards action than the last two games but hopefully that's not the case.
One last thing: some of the new necromorphs are INCREDIBLY ANNOYING. First, FEEDERS. FUCK THEM. They're like The Pack just bigger and more annoying. They can come in infuriating swarms and scream a lot. UGH. Also there's a new one, not sure what it's called yet but it essentially imitates the kill scene for the dividers. They're just heads that crawl around and reanimate bodies, I THINK the only way to beat them is shoot the head off the body, shooting limbs is useless (or so it seemed to me). HOWEVER, they're not dead and will jump right back on a body so after you shoot them off, you have to hit them again to kill them for good. Finally the wasters (the ones with pick axes that split into different forms depending on how you shoot them) seem like they might take up a lot of ammo if you're not careful. I had one literally end up being three different forms before I killed it so watch out for those guys when you play!
OH AND ONE MORE THING: CO-OP. I wasn't ever really sure until I played but there's no split-screen gaming on the same console for it, online only co-op as far as I know so there's that.
Going from what I've seen and played so far (which obviously isn't much) I don't know if I'll like it more than the first two games but I should at least enjoy it regardless since I love the series so much. Guess we'll see! Don't take all of this as "MAN I DUNNO, THIS DOESN'T SEEM AS GOOD AS THE OTHER ONES, IT'LL PROBABLY SUCK DON'T GET TOO HYPED" haha because I know it'll be good, I just have a lot of fears that EA is gonna eventually wreck the franchise trying to make it like everything else for more sales but we'll see! If you get a chance, play the demo! If you've seen much of the videos online, especially the 20 minute gameplay one, you've already seen most of what you'll be doing but it's worth it for nothing else just to get a feel for all the new features.

It's finally official! (not that we didn't know it was happening lol)
Caught some of the co-op gameplay and some NASTY necromorph action. Definitely looks promising!

DS3, Co-op / New Alt weapon fires / new skills
General | Posted 13 years agoYo guys, been a while! Just posting a quick link from IGN on DS3.
http://m.ign.com/articles/2012/05/0.....features-co-op
Interesting stuff although I'm not sure how I feel about the new alt functions on the weapons. It kinda sounds like they're consolidating the force gun and plasma cutter together and the pulse rifle with the ripper? I guess it could be convenient to carry more weapons, in a way taking more guns with less inventory space taken up. Guess we'll see how that works out. I'm definitely interested in the new abilities (crouch/roll) along with being able to actually manipulate objects with kinesis rather than just picking them up and throwing them (DS1's TK is going to look and feel so primitive and unresponsive after this, it already did after DS2 lol).
E3 is fast approaching so I guess we'll see what's fact and what's fiction soon enough!

Secret Unitology Messages
General | Posted 14 years agoI've been meaning to make a post about this for a while but kept putting it off. At this point it's not entirely a secret but you may not know yet, there are secret messages hidden throughout Dead Space 1 and 2. I don't mean the usual "Make Us Whole" or "Altman Be Praised" you see written in blood everywhere, actual hidden USEFUL messages! There's one message hidden in each level of DS1 that translates to "Do you believe? deadspace.ea.com/ibelieve Your light shows the way, we have left you a gift" followed by four arrows, one of which will light up green with the light of your weapon. The site just explains what button those arrows correspond to and once you find all twelve you have a code that gets you 5 free power nodes. That site is now down but you can find screencaps of the button correspondence. I won't tell you where they are since that'd spoil the challenge and if you feel like cheating you can look up their locations yourself.
DS2's message is still a bit of a secret for me though. I've only managed to find it in two locations. It's particularly hard to find these because the ENTIRE message is hidden until you shine a light upon it. There's no visible part of it before you put a light on it. It reads "Warrior! Armor yourself with the truth. We have left you a gift" and has a crude drawing of what looks like a RIG helmet. Some forums suggest that it was a secret message similar to the ones in the first game but they never finished implementing it and just didn't bother to remove the message from the walls so as far as I know, no one really knows if this message has a complete code or does anything. I'm actually really interested if anyone knows any more about this code since I haven't been able to find any more messages in my plays. If you know any more about it you should drop a comment here! If you don't, well, now you've got a secret to try to crack the next time you play DS2.
Here's a video of someone else that found the same one I saw.

Uncharted Style Dead Space?
General | Posted 14 years agohttp://kotaku.com/5863657/ea-wants-.....ooter-and-more
Apparently some new management down at EA is throwing a pissy fit that Dead Space doesn't sell as well as games like Uncharted so they want to expand the scope of the series to include an adventure version of the game, FPS style DS and even a flight game. I'm all about welcoming change and experimenting but honestly this sounds more like EA going out of their way to emulate something else that Dead Space really isn't. If they do an adventure game and can keep the horror aspects (and make it look as good as Uncharted) I might be interested but eh. FPS honestly isn't my favorite idea either since it was a really great idea to incorporate the HUD into the RIG and going FPS obviously would take that away. And flying game? Not sure how I feel about that either, honestly not very stoked on the idea. Apparently DS3 is still happening and co-op has been "confirmed" (I use that term extremely lightly) by the EA insider.
Like I said, I'm down for game creators trying new things to keep installments fresh but making Dead Space like Uncharted and Starfox seems more like watering down a good formula for the sake of being more mainstream than expanding and improving. Variety is cool but I'm not so sure about this. We'll see what happens, these are only rumors after all.

DS3: Isaac's mental condition hasn't improved much...
General | Posted 14 years ago[WARNING: Possible spoilers, at best rumor]
Siliconera has once again leaked some new info on DS3. I have my reservations that they actually have a mole or whatever in EA leaking news to them or if they're just making shit up, who knows. The latest gossip they've dropped on the net entails the reason Isaac has traveled to the previously mentioned ice planet of Tau Volantis as well as his mental state.
I already warned you of potential spoilers so if you don't want ANY of the story revealed until you play, don't read further. That said, Apparently DS3 begins with Isaac being presented with the choice to face EarthGov for a warrant of arrest he has acquired or go to rescue a woman, presumably Jennifer who was mentioned in the last update, from Tau Volantis. Obviously he opts for saving her over arrest.
Also revealed is that Isaac's mental condition has deteriorated to the point that he now has a split personality and actually encounters a "Shadow Isaac" who throughout the game berates and mocks him.
Not entirely sure how I feel about the whole Shadow Isaac thing, if anyone can do it tastefully I'm sure Visceral can pull it off. Again, these are at best rumors since no one knows if Siliconera really has someone in Visceral/EA, so take it with a grain of salt. If true, it's pretty interesting, if not, the game should still be good.

Enemies in DS3 may not hide in the dark...
General | Posted 14 years ago-but apparently in blinding light. White-out conditions from a snowy planet Isaac has crash-landed on. Reported from another site by Kotaku, supposedly DS3 starts out with Isaac crashing on a frozen planet called Tau Volantis where he meets back up with Ellie and a new character named Jennifer who is trying to find some codex and reverse-engineer research done by a new corporation called Rosetta. Also, apparently in DS3 you'll be fighting new enemies called the "hive mind" (not sure what they'll be like, I'd presume not massive monsters like the final boss from DS1 although they share it's name). It also seems that you'll be ditching your beloved RIG for a snowsuit (at least sometimes?), let's hope they're well-armored.
Provided this is legit information, this could prove to put another good twist on the horror formula. Obviously you'll be indoors at times and I'm sure there will be plenty of unnaturally dark corners for the hive mind (and presumably still necros) to lurk in, but white-out blizzard conditions? Gotta admit, trying to fight enemies you can barely see, if at all, definitely adds a touch of scare even if it's not in a near pitch-black mining vessel or elementary school.

DS3 art seen on Israeli news?
General | Posted 14 years agoThis could be a hoax since when asked about the footage EA said "We have no news on the Dead Space franchise at this time." But take it as you will, I'll be taking it with a grain of salt since I don't wanna get my hopes up just yet. Still, it's promising to see that yes, in the video there were new necromorphs being shown and they had the banner which read Dead Space 3.
Find out what the hell I'm talking about here:

If you could design a necromorph, what would it be and how would it try to tear Isaac limb from limb?

Some more DS3 news
General | Posted 14 years agoIt appears new listings have appeared on Gamasutra for a senior VFX artist, audio director, and senior development director for the Dead Space franchise! The link to the listing can be found here: http://jobs.gamasutra.com/jobseekerx/viewjobrss.asp?cjid=26989&accountno=178
Also, a small article pertaining to aforementioned listings and a bit more has popped up here: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/310928/ea-building-for-dead-space-3/?cid=OTC-RSS&attr=CVG-News-RSS
It's pretty true that EA hasn't been very secretive as of late about the (possible) ongoing development for the third installment of Dead Space, though I'm sure no one minds. I certainly don't, biptches.
Anyways, quick little question since I'm pretty curious to hear everyone's wishlist. What three things do you want to see in DS3? Personally, I want to see a more explorable area (ship or otherwise), more weapons, and new Necromorphs!

EA hunting for DS3 Workers?!
General | Posted 14 years agoJust saw on my twitter page something you guys might feel is pertinent to your lives. That is, if you think Dead Space is pertinent. And considering you're here that's more than likely the case.
But yes, as the title says it's true! The full article with a huge amount of awesome info can be found here:

I hope you all are just as excited as I am to hear that DS3 will be even bigger and better than the second. Let's just hope it comes out soon.

General | Posted 14 years agoThis is pretty fresh out the oven so there's not much yet to be posting but in the future keep your eyes peeled here for any news on upcoming game/movie/etc releases and any secrets within the game that are worth noting you might not know about! (such as the light sensitive hidden Unitology messages in Dead Space 1 & 2).
That said, welcome to the group and keep destroying necromorphs!
