So, is everyone dragging their tails back to FA now?
Posted 2 years agoApparently 'social media is over' with people 'retreating to smaller communities and forums based around common interests'.
Does that mean we all hang out on FA again? I'm not sure I can remember why we left...
Anyone else here?
[Edit] So I guess while I'm seeing loads of furries on Twitter say they might head back to FA, they haven't got here yet.
It's just all you lot who never left. And even one or two who are considering leaving. :P

Yeah, im at FC...
Posted 9 years agoThis is literally the only thing i ever post to FA anymore... the fact that im at FC... Hello! =O)
Further confusion.
Posted 10 years agoIt is well documented that about 50% of all my journal posts are variations on 'Hi, Im going to be at FC', And this one is no exception.
IN THE CRAZY CIRCUS THAT IS A FURRY CON. WHY SHOULD I HANG OUT WITH YOU?
I try to be super nice to everyone. I'm mildly interesting. I make fursuits, I animate, 3D model, sculpt, you know, make stuff.
AN ARTIST! CAN YOU DRAW IN MY SKETCHBOOK?
Um, no, I cant draw for shynola. Hasn't stopped me from being a professional artist for many years though.
WHY AM I SHOUTING?
I have no idea, it seemed to be how these meme things go.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK LIKE?
Average white British dude, 176cm tall, if you happen to be carrying a tape measure. Usually dressed in a brightly colored t-shirt or a giant weasel costume.
IS IT ALWAYS YOU IN THE WEASEL SUIT?
Actually... no, i tend to let people wear Deez more than I wear him myself, and I wind up dressing up in other peoples suits. I'm one of those weirdos. Its my idea of fun.
CAN I HUG YOU?
Sure! In suit, out of suit. Are we not furries, dammit?
DO YOU SMOKE, DRINK, EAT MEAT, EMIT LOW LEVELS OF RADIATION?
Don't smoke, I do drink alcohol, im omnivorous and drink far too much coffee.
ATTENDING ANY EVENTS?
Yeah, usually the fursuit type ones. Actually I think I'm on the panel for some... need to look into that...
WHATS THE BEST WAY TO GET HOLD OF YOU?

Hey Deez, Why you making fursuits instead of animations?
Posted 11 years agoA few people have asked me this, and I've wondered from time to time..
I think its because I go to furry cons.
Go to a furry con and your surrounded by suits and suit makers and a million and one great ideas for the next costume. Furry cons charge me up with costume enthusiasm and consequently, I want to make suits rather than animate.
Maybe i should go to animation cons instead. =OP

I'm going to FC 2014!
Posted 12 years agoIt was pretty obvious I wasn't going to FC this year, I simply don't have the cash.
Bu then I wasn't counting on the generosity of my friends.
So... Um... IM GOING TO FC! Woo. =O)
Cons are about people and I'd love to meet up with you lot, particularly you 3D artists, suit and creature makers.
Drop me a reply here and ill get back too you.
Woo. =O)

Still around... anything you want to know? =O)
Posted 12 years agoYeeer, its been a while since I've done much with FA. I've made new fursuits, but haven't gotten around to posting pics... I'm always fiddling with animated stuff, but haven't really rendered off anything I can show... and posting journals seems odd when I'm not posting artwork.
But I still check on this place every few days, and I'm much more around than I might be giving the impression of. So in the absence of my having anything to say, is there anything people want to know? =O)

The weasels further confusion...
Posted 13 years agoI've arrived in California, an so the countdown to FC begins! I'm currently up north just outside Gurneyville, but will be heading down to the south bay on Tuesday.
I'm hoping to live FC a little larger than last time - do the party thing and try to meet more people, so let me know if you at to hook up or just say hi. =O)

Weasel orbits the sun...
Posted 13 years agoSo another birthday rolls around for this mammal, and I get to celebrate my continued existence. =O)
I'd like to thank you for existing too, all of you. You're pretty much what my life is about, in all your squeaking, chirping, murring cacophony.
In a huge indifferent universe, you lot give me the warm fuzzies. =O)

Has it really been 4 months since Confuzzled?
Posted 13 years agoI'm certainly long overdue a journal entry.
I've mainly been making fursuits (for other people, its my main source of income), being unwell (that was most of August knocked out, right there), attending the Olympics (which was nice, but I suspect would of been even cooler if I was interested in sport) and even doing the odd few days of genuine paid animation (a few more of those every month and I might actually have a sustainable lifestyle).
Its my birthday coming up in a week, and its been on my mind what I should be doing with my life. Funny thing is, if I look back at what I wanted to do as a teenager, "Making creature costumes for a living" was probably my most fervent secret wish. =OP

The surreal sensation of dataloss....
Posted 13 years agoFirst things first. I back up my data. Regularly. On a separate drive for the purpose. I also make offline backups every six months or so.
The chances of loosing your backup and originals within days of each other are slim. The chances of both failing so suddenly and completely that there's no way to salvage stuff even slimmer.
But that's, more or less, what happened.
So, what I have is my offline backups. I made plenty of those. Faaar far too many.
Its chaos. I don't know what i have and what I don't. Files that i think contain finished characters are in fact only the initial stages of building. Things id forgotten id even done are there in pristine detail. There's thousands of files and versions of files to go through.
So, in the interests of my sanity, its probably best to draw a line under things and start some new stuff. The old stuff may still be there, but its going to take some tidying. After all, whats the hurry?

The confuzzling...
Posted 13 years agoI can't possibly write anything before mentioning Confuzzled. It went brilliantly, and its increasingly likely that it'll to grow be a world class con alongside Eurofurance. With a fair chance of hitting 1000 attendees next year.
Being on staff, my perspective of the con is a little different - Its as much work as play, but the satisfaction I get from seeing others enjoy the con is huge, and I've been enjoying browsing through everyone's con reports. Feeling a little glow of pride...
Sadly I didn't get a chance to fursuit, owing to structural weasel failure. I hadn't brought enough stuffing with me, and the hefty hotel pillows i used instead split the seam under the tail in a very unfortunate spot.
Still, i got to see this years recently finished suit commissions in action, and with a bit of luck i should have pics to post on FA soon.

Conventions past, I was *that* guy...
Posted 13 years agoWhat with my involvement with Confuzzled (25th - 28th May, UK's biggest furry convention, buy now!) , I've been thinking a lot about conventions lately.
I remember my first convention, Anthrocon 99.... no fursuit... I couldn't draw art... and often the handful of people I knew seemed to vanish, leaving me Jonny no-mates.
I was DESPERATE to get to know people, to hang out. Trying so hard to be interesting, witty. Tagging along as a third wheel to people who probably wished I would quietly leave them alone.
I was disenfranchised, I felt like I had nothing to offer the wonderful whirling furry circus. So all I could do was put on my most interesting-person clothes and dial the personality up to 11.
Over a decade on and it seems like theres more people to hang out at cons with than time. People know my animation, my suits. Heck they know me.
And thats when I meet myself, or someone very like me. The me of all those years ago. Wearing kooky clothes and wild eyed. Their tagging along, hyper and desperately trying to make me laugh, or wax knowledgeable about animation. Their TRYING SO HARD to be interesting that its exhausting to be around.
I'd like to calm them down, take the time get to know them. Introduce them to more furs who I think they'd get on with and hang out. But no, suddenly I meet an old friend who I haven't seen in years, and im so caught up that by the time I look around they've gone. And I feel awful.
Do I want to help them? Or do I just want to help myself from all those years ago? Is this a furry thing, or just a microcosm of how the social world works? I dunno, but it feels like its all looped around, and its an odd feeling.

Suggestions wanted for Confuzzled's 'furry film' screening..
Posted 13 years agoThis year I'm actually official confuzzled con staff, and amongst my duties is organising a screening room, which will run throughout the day showing furry themed films and shows.
I thought it might be good to ask around for suggestions - you can include commercial works, as we have licence to screen anything available on UK DVD.
Ideally were looking for short format stuff, under 10 minutes. I don't think anyone wants to spend a chunk of their convention sitting through an entire movie.
So what would you recommend?

Weasel in the bay area...
Posted 14 years agoSo, the run up to FC begins in earnest for me with my arrival in sunny Sunnyvale. The next few days will be spent hanging out with various furry types, and potentially making up one of these (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5362595) bears in a kind of high speed bear raising event.
Ill also be looking over my projects and trying to get back into the groove, now my contract is over. Lots of furry critters to model and move as I hang out at FC. =O)

Whose around before and after FC?
Posted 14 years agoSo yes, looks like ill be going to FC, so here's the usual shout out to see whose likely to be around either side.
Im partucularly looking for visiting furs who wont be at work on the weekdays.

All hail the birthday weasel...
Posted 14 years agoSo its that time of year when I celebrate another successful orbit of the sun. Its been a bit of a mad year, I've moved town, made a couple of fursuits and found myself unexpectedly contracted to animate burly men doing yoga.
Maybe its just the associated income boost, but i really feel like I'm getting my shit together. The work is pretty challenging, and when i come out of the gig I'm likely to be a better animator, and, at the very least, more practiced and itching to animate fuzzies. =O)

Out to lunch...
Posted 14 years agoI think its pretty obvious that I haven't had much to post for a while.
This is mainly down to me landing actual legitimate freelance animation work, which has a habit of eating up every waking weekday, and driving me crazy to boot.
Sadly I'm contracted to animate humans, although, tantalisingly, the company I'm contracting for works on a very popular furry franchise. Who knows, if they like me, maybe ill get to come back and work on something more fuzzy.
Anyhow, as ever, I've got plenty work in the pipeline, and when i get the time, animations will happen, but for now ill just have to watch all you lot make the cool stuff =O)

Posted 14 years agoNow, my general experience of facebook hasn't been a good one. Like a lot of people I got nagged / forced into making an account, asked a lot of personal questions, then followed by a disturbingly mixed grab bag of pre-pubescent relatives, workmates and my mum. In short, I never used the bloody thing.
However, there has been this on-going discussion about the function and suitability of furaffinity, and I started asking myself why can't we use the same tools as everyone else? So i gave it a go.
There is something quite wonderfully perverse about registering your alter ego on facebook. Its a service based on absolute disclosure of personal information, and here I am not giving them a damn thing. The feeling is rather like wearing a fursuit in a public place. Im anonymous, yet conspicuous, my weasel avatar getting amused comments when I gave the online games a go.
Ok, maybe some of my enthusiasm is that i now have unending stream of competitors to beat at Tetris, but im starting to feel that going into the huge mundane sprawl of facebook and weaseling it up is a great way for defeating the very mundanity that i find so toxic about the service. Facebook isn't going to disappear no matter how strongly I focus my disdain upon it. But maybe by showing a little furry pride, i can restore a little of the fantastical quality i love the net for.
Edit: And because a couple of people have asked, im on facebook as Deezburry Weasel.

He's not the messiah...
Posted 15 years agoSo, for the record, yes I am aware of Messiah studio and their current promotion.
No, I'm not taking advantage of it - I'm happy with the software I'm using.
Yes, it is a good 3d package. No it isn't a scam.
But, no, i wouldn't recommend it for someone learning 3D modelling...
Allow me to explain. =O)
When it comes down to it, most good 3D packages can do what's asked of them. They may go about things different ways, some may be better at some things than others, but you can achieve more or less the same results.
However, learning a 3D package is no small matter. Their often baffling arrays of buttons sliders and menus, and those different ways they go about things can cause real confusion moving from one to the other. Most people stick to one package. I'm supposed to keep current with a wide range of packages for my work, but I still go back to 3d studio for doing my FA animations. Not because its better, but just because I've had most experience with it and I know its foibles.
The 3D package you learn on is likely to be your first choice as you grow as a 3D artist. Messiah studio know this, and that's why their delivering their package into as many pairs of eager hands as they can, its a user base land grab.
Now, theres nothing wrong with this, but if your looking to make a career of 3D it might be worth learning one of the big packages. For example, knowledge of Motionbuilder Is a big door opener right now in the job market. I can tell you Ive never seen a single vacancy that required Messiah studio.
Now say you just want to learn the 3D basics cheaply, well $10 seems like a sweet deal. Unfortunately its $10 more than Messiahs biggest competition. Blender is free, and not free in a limited special offer sense, free as in forever. Blender is a genuine attempt to bring professional 3D tools to everyone, and lately its been getting remarkably close to that goal. If you want to see what Blender is capable of, take a look at Sintel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRsGyueVLvQ - Every year they make an animation to drive development, sintel is just the latest in a line of them.
Not only that, Blender has a big userbase, lots of free tutorials and online support. In short its a better option for the beginner, with a guaranteed future. So give it a go at http://www.blender.org/ or don't because, like I say, in the end, its all down to personal preference. =O)
Woozil 2.0...
Posted 15 years agoIve noticed is I'm now a member of the Fur affinity 'Toon central' group, where I have the honor of being listed as a 'cartoonist'. Now I never got the knack of drawing cartoons as a kid, but I did my best in sculpting clay and later on, modeling on computer. Past few years I've really enjoyed animating my weaselly self - My very own cartoon alter ego.
I figure that if theres toon furries out there, well why cant Deezl be a CGI toon? A digital weasel, if you will. After all, its pretty close to the truth, and I think there needs to be more peace and love between the traditional inky toons and us polygonal buts.
Anyway, I guess this all links in with something I've been meaning to do for a while, which is give Deezle a bit of a remodeling. 2d characters change a little every time their drawn, but CG ones stay fixed till their changed, and I've been feeling Deezl is due some upgrades.
So anyone got any feelings on where Deez should be heading? Right now im just tweaking things up a little, adding a little more personality into the headshape, tweaking proportions towards the toonyer. Big question for me is if I should move into adding fur, or take it in the other direction, Stylising the textured fur into a soft lit material - somewhere between velvet, rubber and clay. Or whatever it is CGI cartoons are made of...

I won't be at FC...
Posted 15 years agoTitle says it all really. A whole bunch of things conspired against me traveling to California this January. I'll miss all of you guys!
Interestingly, though I won't be there, the Deezl fursuit may well be. If you see the woozil about, give him a hug, whoever winds up inside. =OP

Birthday whiffle...
Posted 15 years agoThis Friday marks my birthday. Now, I'm not usually the kind of person who just comes out and announces such things. It seems almost rude to me, like I'm demanding attention - "All hail the birthday weasel. Please arrange your gifts and messages alphabetically in neat stacks". It goes against my nature.
But, equally, friends want to send good wishes (heck, I know I feel crappy for missing a birthday), and if I don't tell anyone the day, how the hell are they to know? Its not some kind of test.
So, I'm sorry if I've ever missed your birthday. Sorry if you've ever missed MY birthday. But happy to have friends and a happy birthday to all. =O)

Let's talk about commissioning animation...
Posted 15 years agoYou may of noticed, I'm currently available for fursuit commissions, which are ticking over (You can expect to see more of my suits appearing around cons as their owners début them.) However, I often get asked: If I can be commissioned to make fursuits, why cant I be comissioned to make an animation?
Its a good point – Fursuit builders are easy enough to find in the furry community, animators, not so much. So why not play to that gap in the market? Well, the problem is precisely down to that rarity. There's an existing market for fursuits, - People can look at what I offer and compare it against other builders out there.
Nobody seems to have a clear idea of how much an animation is worth, and likewise I'm not sure how much to charge. I mean, I know how long an animation takes me, and I know how much I need to charge so I don't have to buy food on credit. It would mean a price of several hundred dollars, and I just don't know if people would pay it.
Now, I could discuss endlessly the differing prices and work involved for differing styles of animation – discuss the cost of getting a computer model, the cost of having it animated, and maybe that should be addressed in another journal entry – But for now I thought I'd get peoples opinion.
What if, as an experiment, I auctioned off a commission, just to see how things go?

I won't be at Eurofurance...
Posted 15 years agoWell, actually, I was never planning on EF. Theres lots of great people (and meerkats) to meet there, but I left my heart (And giant weasel suit) in San Francisco, so my limited con going budget goes towards FC.
Like everyone else, ill try not to be too jealous of you guys who are attending, the new venue looks great and im sure the con will continue to go from strength to strength.
