Okay, so this has crossed my mind several times, after several other artists claiming another artist took something off of his or her character. And even before then
I've been thinking a lot about this. Now, what makes an original character? Does a beard or long ears make a character? Glasses, wings, tails, eye color, etc make a character? No. None of those do. It's the thought and the time and the artists spirit that is put within the character.
Let's take.... my dragon elf species for example. Now, I see a LOT of people who baww sometimes about how people will rip off the long ears, tail, etc. off of their character. Now, that's just it. You see long ears, tails, lots of things on a lot of characters.
Since the dragon elves are a mix of elf and dragon, then it's natural to think of them with long ears, tails, and wings. And there are a lot of characters with long ears, horns, tails, wings, etc. I can't think of one off the top of my head, atm, but there are a lot of em. Both here online and through out cartoons and etc.
I think *Pr0jectGemini even has a stamp about this sort of thing. What constitues a rip off? Well, I see it a lot with the X-Men series. People like some sort of aspect of Logan, Jean, or Scott, and give it to their offspring. An example of this is the phenoix power or the bone claws. With the endless powers of imagination, something like this is created. >.> Now,I've done it before. A lot of people have, within the confines of the X-Men universe. Alexander had Gambit's power. I changed it though. Because deep down, I truly knew that he was a rip off of Gambit.
It's major things like that, in which things are noticeably taken from a character, be it cannon or OC. But, where do we draw the line. That's been wracking my brain a bit. What constitutes a true rip off and a true OC? There are many aspects to what a rip off can be, but I do agree with several people, it has to be big, in which it's something like an appearance thing to powers. Colors as well, I suppose would make up a lot for rip offs. I see this a bit too. But the problem still lies within the character.
To be honest, I have been accused of ripping off someones character on Furaffinity. Never having been to this users page before, they complained that I took the name Sapphire. Now, Sapphire is my birthstone, which is why Sapphire is named Sapphire.
Again, I had NEVER been to this users page before,never commented, had only joined a day prior, and this user had the gall to claim that. But she had apparently done it to several users whose character's name was Sapphire or if they had the name Sapphire within the user name. This is what got me thinking about what could be considered a rip off and what can't be.
To give you an example of a rip off, Repo Men. Yes, you've heard me rant about this before, but I have looked into both sides of the argument. What made my final decision for this being a rip off, was in an issue of Fangoria, in which they were interviewed. They said that the original repo men did have singing and dancing. But previous to that, I looked at the plot, I looked at what they were saying, I looked at what all was going on. I did the research to determine my own answer. I looked at it through an artist eye. This being said, here's what I came up with: It is indeed a rip off. Why? Well because of not only the plot, but how they went about making this, where they had set up, the people being at some of the showings of Repo TGO, I looked at interviews, and I saw the singing and dancing, I watched the trailer, I did everything I could to make up my mind. In fact, I did come around to seeing the movie because a friend begged me to see it with her. And I did and it was a rip off. And that's why I still go by that today. But I didn't look at it like a passerby would or some of these people here on dA do. I looked at it like it was a crime scene and every detail counted.
And I've thought about it since then. Then, this previous semester, my art professor showed us several pictures in which art was inspired by another picture. Venus has several if I'm not mistaken. They, too, are very much alike, and yet so different. Would you call them rip offs? Probably not, but that's because it's been classified as a work of art. But then, what defines art? According to my professor, art has to have an intent and a purpose.
Now,what does this have to do with originality? Well, here's what it has to do. Those artworks were original, but they were inspired by something else. In fact, the original Venus was inspired by something else.
Also, Sephiroth, the mighty Sephiroth, was the name of a God. That's why the character has that name. The creator liked the name and gave it to the FFVII Sephiroth.
The way I see it is that it isn't a beard or tail or name or ears or eyes or what ever. If you take something big, like everything about the character, name and all and tweak the hair a bit or tweak some personality trait of a character, then yes, it's a rip off. But something as small as a beard or a tail that is used on so many characters, then no, it isn't a rip off. Lots of characters have them.
What truly makes a character original is that the time and effort put into thinking of the appearance, doing the research, creating the world they live in, creating the name, making the personality, everything. It's the heart and soul of an artist.
An original character' s name or body part doesn't have to be original. But the name does have to come from the heart, as does the artwork itself. What makes something original isn't an aspect that can be seen when glancing at it. It's truly looking at the piece of work and saying to yourself, 'hey, that's original.' seeing the story behind the artwork and actually reading the artist comments on how they came up with the character.
And thats it for my thoughts on this sort of thing. It was just some musings I've had for well over two years now. And I wanna hear your thoughts on this guys! Speak up!
And no, this isn't because of some drama thing, it's just some thoughts I needed to put down and decide upon. >.>

Should Viktor be scrapped?
Posted 15 years agoAs of late, and through roleplays on MSN, I've... been wondering, should, VIktor be scrapped? I mean... honestly... it kinda seems like... in every fight he's in, he can't win. Or if he does win, he suddenly becomes a Gary-Stu. It's like, he's someone's toy, and if he wins something, people seem to bitch at me. But if he's constantly getting his ass kicked in, he's fine. I don't mind having my OCs being beaten till their black and blue, but he's constantly having his ass kicked in. He can't win, it seems. So... should he just be scrapped? I mean... honestly, I love him to death as a character, but... other people dont. They want their ocs to be the top dog, and tearing him apart is their way of doing it.
This isn't directed toward those of you I talk to on Skype, but MSN, yes. Very much so. Because dammnit all! Why can't he have a day where he wins? Why does he have to be the underdog and be hated so much if he wins, and yet sumpathized with if he losses?

This seems to be something I woulda seen in the news about a guy having eight babies or soemthing, but no, there is a game in which you play as an octopus dad O.o..
I will be playing this and writing a review, but the... interesting thing is, this game is free, but leaves me wondering how much LSD I've ingested O.O I don't do drugs, but it's the first thought in my head. *looks at soda* I knew somehting tasted off :| Now I know what DB
But in all honesty, it's got my attention, so, Imma go download it. I'll let you know my thoughts!

Posted 15 years agoYeah. I no longer give a damned about Thanksgiving. This week has been murder on me. And I honestly don't care any more. I don't care. Ever since I've been home, I have had little time to myself, I've been told to do this do that, and then they don't care what the fuck I have to say :I Yeah, I honestly don't care anymore. I'm sick and tired of being treated like shit whenever I get home. It isn't fair. And then my siblings sit around and do nothing. Yeah, they're REAL supportive :I

Why did I bother?
Posted 15 years agoWhy the Hell did I even bother coming home? My folks are fighting, my siblings are lazy as fuck,Hell, I can't get one ounce of my essay done AT ALL because they're telling me to do this, and do that, and my siblings sit there like nothing is wrong and they don't have to help out. This was supposed to be a HAPPY Thanksgiving. It fuckin sucks, and I don't want to have anything to do with them at the moment.
I have maybe...one word of my essay on there, nothing else, because they're CONSTANTLY wanting me to do something. I can't even go over my police ops textbook with out having every other page intterupted for a good hour to two hours while they make me work :I
I'm so stressed, I can't sleep well again, and I'm sick...AGAIN because of this shit. Hell, I ran to the bathroom to go hurl my guts up, and I,GOT.YELLED.AT. :I Yeah, it's perfectly okay for my siblings to sit there and play video games, watch tv, and to do whatever, but if I need to go puke, or I need to work on homework over the break, it's suddenly a crime.

Round.....eleven o'clock ish, Imma be offline, as I'll be going home X3 Which makes me really really happy :B Although, I expect a lot of boxes, etc. But that's fine :B I've still got some things to pack, but overall, I'm excited. Lack of sleep
Posted 15 years agoIt seems that no matter what I do, no matter how hard I try, I can't sleep. And if I do sleep it's half an hour to an hour, so if I were to round up how much sleep I've had, it'd be six and a half hours :I Actually, I think it's less than that :I More like three hours. I don't really know WHY I can't sleep.
Some of it I think is due to worry, some to stress, and it's sucking big time :I I absolutly hate hate HATE it.... as the Emergency Alert system foes off and looses my fuckin signal :I Joy. >.>;
ANYWAYS, I don't know what is wrong with me. I'm terrified of one thing, and stressed out about another, Hell, I can't even pay attention in class anymore. My mind is always racing, I'm constantly wondering things. My moods have been shifting....
It sucks :I It really really does.

Posted 15 years agoYeah I saw it. It was rather good, and I honestly give it a 10 out of 10.
Basically, you start off with Megamind falling from the sky, as he talks about him loosing the girl, and he's falling to his death. He then flashbacks to the beginning. I was confused at first about this, but I went with it. I thought it was kinda funny, actually, as he said that they were ready to get him out of the house. I was also amused by how Metroman knocked him away from his house in the next scene and he landed in prison. I was highly amused XDDDDDDDDDD
Another thing was, I could actually feel for this character, and I loved how instead of sticking to the whole Good guy winning thing, they did the bad guy instead. I thought that was cool.
The whole movie was good, and I liked the watch that allowed him to change shapes XDDDDDDD That amused me. I also like how dramatic he was with the whole "I'm sorry" stuff.
The one thing that was confusing was that some of the scenes we see in the trailer are seen at the very end of the movie. It would have been better to put them into the middle of the movie to give some form of explination to the whole thing.
Characters were actually believeable, and the acting was superb. While there wasn't any real good laughs, such as the school scenes or just the movie, Will Feral made up for it by becoming Megamind.
Titan was a... well, he was interesting, although I honestly didn't like the character. The actor really didn't get into it, and he was just you're average nerdy guy who wanted the hot girl who didn't love him.
Megamind was a well thought out bad guy, and it was interesting to see him try and answer the question on what he wass going to do now that he had defeated Metroman. And I did feel sorry for him when Roxan had dummped him. Will Ferrall was good at making me feel sorry for the bad guy.
Roxan was annoying, but she was well done. I'm not sure who played her, but it was good. Really good.
As far as the other characters, Metroman didn't really have a lot of lines, except for the beginning, and the rest were good.
Ending was great. I like how everything worked out. Especially with the constant shifting of characters, like when Megamind, Minion and Titan were fighting. I like how Minion switched to Megamind to save megamind and Megamind used the watch to become Metroman. In the end he was a good hero. And I honestly thought this was a good movie
I'm not going to rattle on and on about the movie because it just came out, BUT if you are thinking about seeing it, I say go for it. It's a good movie. And trust me, I would rattle more, but I don't want to spoil it too much XD

Posted 15 years agoMy overall reaction to this movie was a mixture of "OMG! THIS IS GREAT!" which quickly became "WTF IS THIS SHIT?!?"
I liked the traps, such as the Go Cart trap, and the furnace lookin one, but I was also a tad disappointed. They were good, yes, but not SAW good. And I felt as though Hoffman had become the joker, what with him telling the other cop that the games won't stop and people will continue dying if they don't hand over Jill. >.>;; I mean, that's more... well, that's not SAW.
I loved the idea of the Public trap. That was a good idea. But I was disappointed that the go cart trap ended up being Jill's nightmare. It had pontential. Another thing is, why would you have this car trap? It wasn't winnable, and everyone died. Nothing followed Jigsaw's original plan. And that kinda made me sad.
Another thing is, we really only got one to two scenes with John Kramer in it. There wasn't much. And I was hoping for more. I was also hoping for maybe more on Hoffman's background story. But I was let down. All the movie really was was Hoffman's revenge. So it really wasn't a SAW movie.
Had a couple of explosions in the movie, but the biggest twist for me was the actual ending. I wasn't prepared for it. Yeah I knew Gordon survived and all, but it got me off guard with him being Jigsaws apprentice.
Movie itself, I think I'll give it a 3.5 because it was good, but it left me feeling hollow and not really amused. I think if, it weren't for Gruetert putting in as much time as he had, and the actual ending and traps, it would be rather boring. While the traps make up for a lot of it, I was really let down. Really. Nothing followed SAW and yes, while it was in 3D, it wasn't that great.
I still liked Hoffman and everything, and I'll more than likely buy it, but overall, looking at a SAW fan point of view, they were cashing in the money, that was all. It was a cash cow, and they made it such :I
My suggestion, don't see this movie. You'll only be disappointed in the end :I
I liked the traps, such as the Go Cart trap, and the furnace lookin one, but I was also a tad disappointed. They were good, yes, but not SAW good. And I felt as though Hoffman had become the joker, what with him telling the other cop that the games won't stop and people will continue dying if they don't hand over Jill. >.>;; I mean, that's more... well, that's not SAW.
I loved the idea of the Public trap. That was a good idea. But I was disappointed that the go cart trap ended up being Jill's nightmare. It had pontential. Another thing is, why would you have this car trap? It wasn't winnable, and everyone died. Nothing followed Jigsaw's original plan. And that kinda made me sad.
Another thing is, we really only got one to two scenes with John Kramer in it. There wasn't much. And I was hoping for more. I was also hoping for maybe more on Hoffman's background story. But I was let down. All the movie really was was Hoffman's revenge. So it really wasn't a SAW movie.

Small depression
Posted 15 years agoAs of late, I've had a tad bit of depression and small things hit hard. The main reason for the depression is school related, as I'm failing English for TWO absences, and I'm constantly belittled in that class and in Folk Arts. As well as owing money to the school. Most of the time I keep wondering why I'm even in college.
So if I seem snappy, don't take it personally. I'm trying to hide the depression as best I can, but it's not working so well >.>;;
Also, this has spawned a lot of vent art :B Which I'll post sooner or later. :BBBBB As well as the trades I owe and also the references and some stories.
Anyways, how's everyone else?

ONTO THE ACTUAL JOURNAL:
I am officially shutting down both my facebook and my myspace. Why? Ehhh... well, job wise, Jobs in the criminal justice field are looking at them, and I just no longer use them :I In fact, I rarely use them >.>;; So why keep them if I don't use them?
Also, I will be getting artwork up. And I should have a new powercord come tomorrow 8D My mom found one. Right now though, I'm still on the school computer
Anyways, just a couple of things:
1. Teams. Now, I know I've always joked about Team Hoffman vs. Team Jill, but what I find abso-fuckin-lutly rediculous is the fact that it's getting out of hand. To be honest, I remember when people were like "I'm with team Falcons" or "Im with team Capcom" for tournaments and sports. But now it's just so fucking stupid. It only gives another reminder at how strong Twilight's hold is over the public. Whether you hate Twilight or love it, it's what started all of this team bullshit. I don't want to see "TEAM DANTE!" or "TEAM <insert random character name here>" because it's so stupid. First off, teams are meant for sports and tournaments. In fact, it's fun to support your team. Such as, you could have a tournament going on and you can proudly say "I support team <insert name here>" but when it comes to characters, how in God's name can you support them with pride? What's there to support? Are you going to throw a party or a tailgate for them if they win or before the game?
I mean, come on! It's one thing to do it in jest, but it's another to post it every where. Now, I joke about Team Hoffman, but still... it's stupid. It's Twilight related, it's just plain retarded. You cannot support a team when it's only one character. That's not a team, it's a fictional creation. :I That's all there is to it. So stop with the retarded teams and get a fuckin life.
2. I'll get back to musings when I'm not so high strung. As of late, I havn't been sleeping well, nor have I really had any time to relax. I've had constant stress headaches and constant pains. Not to mention i"m getting a cold. But.. yeah >.>;; Hopefully I can relax whenever I get home.
3. As far as art goes, I've got some gift art to post, two trades, and the one request. I'll then be working on the fight scenes. Sorry it's taking so long. I've just had them done on my laptop, but no way to access it at all. So once that power cord comes in, I'm good to go 8D
4. As far as school goes, I've been busy with the god forsaken Annotated bibliographies and it's killing me. No matter. It's almost the end of the semester. Or rather... it's like... half way. We just had our midterms last week, so that should help.
5. I'll be on SL later, and possibly skype. I dunno yet. I'm certain I'll be on round 8 ish as I'll be done with Folk Arts.
I think that's about it.
