Parental Enemies
General | Posted 13 years agoThe number one enemy on my list of "Things Parents Dread" is possibly ear infections.
Oh yeah, my daughter has one and if you've never had a child, I'll describe it as like watching someone you care for slowing being tortured with pain and all you can do is offer some really weak "children's" Ibeprofen. The quotes signify it's totally a wuss medication :D
Joking aside, my daughter's pediatrician has her on some antibiotics for the next 10 days and everything should be cleared up by then. I'm hoping so! My daughter had recently started a sort of "pre-k" program and it was teaching her to potty train, but with this infection she's missing days and all that progress is getting lost. :/
Ah well, that's the thing with being a parent. You gotta expect kids to get sick often and that the best tool you have is patience. Oh, and a good My Little Pony mare-athon cue'd up on your computer to distract her. :)

Falling Down
General | Posted 14 years agoWell, my apparent fridge fix didn't work. It's still peeing water every other day so it's something else. I have no clue what though. :\
Also, needing to raise money for the replacing of my car. I love her lots, but she is getting to be 11 years old, and after having her fender and bumper smashed today... I guess she needs retirement. Car is otherwise fine, just missing chunks of plastic.
Yes yes, I'm fine too.
Physically anyway. Feeling kinda down mentally.
I'll probably open up to comissions soon and start raising money for another car, maybe with a target of Spring. I'll have to steop down as Dungeon Master of my D&D game though. That's going to hurt as it's my favorite hobby. :\
But, we gotta put the prioritys in the right order.

Ice Ice Baby! ...Pick?
General | Posted 14 years agoAt the place i'm currently residing, we have a french-style fridge (Yes I know, big deal. Whoop). Ah, but does your fridge pee itself every night? Haha! ...yeah, didn't think so. This one's special.
ANYWAY, the fridge belongs to my roommate and he means well to have the leak fixed, but he never got around to it because he works a job and goes to college. This pretty much amounts to his entire day taken up. Poor guy. :o
Well, to be a good roomie, I cleaned out the fridge, but decided to take apart the bottom shelving to figure out what the leak problem is being caused by and attempt to do my own crazy repair work on it (You know, cause totally being an unlicensed novice at fridge repair is totally my thing).
Turns out that there's a drainage at the bottom of the freezer side. This drains... water I'm assuming and it was clogged up... by a bag of frozen peas. O_o`
"I see!" said the blind man to his deaf dog as he picked up his hammer and saw.
One removal of a frozen pea-bag and one icepick to the frozen lake at the bottom later and the drainage is actually doing what it was blessed by man's creation to do-- drain water. The giant chunks of ice are in the sink. Because throwing them in the trash would be dumb and tossing them outside will probably crush a stray kitten. So mission accomplished, I fixed a fridge drainage problem!
Yeah, I know. I'm so exciting. :3
So besides cooking and cleaning, add "appliance repair" to the list of things I can do that don't result in a 911 call to the fire department.

Implausable Colors
General | Posted 14 years agoOne thing that can be annoying when working on commissions is that sometimes the commissioner asks for vague colors. Like for example "Caramel" can be vague. Generally it can be thought of as a medium brown (solid), but then again it can be thought of as a more orange color (liquid). Thankfully the person didn't just say something like "the color of caramel candy" cause then I'd wonder if it's Sugar Daddies or Cancy Corn he wants. :3

House Painting
General | Posted 14 years agoI just finished a two-day gig painting a few rooms of a house. It wasn't a difficult project, I mean, I never desired a CTRL-Z key at any point. XD
However, there were a few interesting challenges. The biggest one was trying to paint a room white and that room had a dark blue wall. It would need at minimum two coats, but I only had one coat's worth in the bucket. It was like squeezing blood from a rock... but I succeeded!
Well, with painting the room I mean. No blood was to be had...
Letex paint can be fickle thing. I had yellow-white paint go on brown with no need of a second coat, and then later I'd put a light blue on white and watch the blue bubble and expose the white underneith. Crazy!
The adventure was fun though!
Well, my sore legs might disagree however.

Fursona Meme Thing
General | Posted 14 years agoStolen from
magenta who stole it from
k_1773_n who stole it from... I dunno, elsewhere.
Anyway-
1 – Do you and your "fursona" look alike?
Not really. We're about the same height and build, but he's in better shape than I am.
2 – Do you and your "fursona" share attires?
Usually we do. Simple shirts and shorts, a size too big 'cause we like baggy clothes.
3 – Do you share the same sexuality as your fursona?
Yuppers. :3
4 – If you hadn’t already made your fursona look like you, if you would to change how he/she looked like to make him/her look more like you, how would you think he/she would look like?
I dunno, I guess a week on the couch watching TV should install some love-handles?
5 – Did you work hard to develop your fursona? What is the (brief) history of your fursona?
Oh geez, where to begin? He started as part of the crew of a starship (I was into Star Trek at the time). Then he became a knight in a fantasy setting (I was into D&D), then he was the main character in a modern... almost family sitcom kind of genre (Homage in a way to Rocko's Modern Life), and then sat in limbo for a short time until I reinvented him as part of a crew onboard a starship.
Ah yes, now the circle is complete says Vader...
6 – Do you and your fursona share relationship status?
Nope. I'm married with one daughter. He's single, but has a couple female friends with benefits.
7 – Do you find yourself jealous or upset if you get paired with someone you don’t like or your partner does?
I can't say that problem has ever come up.
8 – How would you like your character not to be used?
I guess nothing like serious porn. Beefcake might be okay as long as it's tasteful.
9 – What’s your fursona’s specialty?
Fixing and operating military hardware that you don't point directly at people. Like radios and computers. Also, sarcasm.
10 – At a score of 1-10 how much are you and your fursona alike?
Um... 5?

Hands versus Paws
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm curious to know what others consider hands versus what they would say are paws. With my local friends, we seem to have different defnitions, yet we don't seem to confuse each other when we start interchanging the terms so... maybe there's not much of a difference?
My thought is that if you have an opposable thumb, you have a hand. Otherwise, you have a paw.
Other people have different definitions, so it's interesting to hear about them. I suppose I could go look up the "official" definitions in a dictionary, but that didn't seem to be much fun when it comes to anthropomorphic animals that have human traints anyway. :)

Double Dare
General | Posted 14 years agoI guess my lesson for today is never make a bet against a man who's character is dressed in drag. XD
Bonus lesson-- sometimes losing is more fun than winning.
Did any of you ever watch the old Nickelodeon game show Double Dare? I loved that show and watched it pretty much every night it was on. I just don't find many shows like that anymore, the kind of action physically involved game show where getting messy is part of the fun.
This does explain, however, why I like Wipeout.

Give Blood without Playing Hocky
General | Posted 15 years agoThe "Big Red Bus" showed up today at my job site and I went in during my lunch to give them a little blood donation. Ever since I learned I'm a good donor candidate, I've been trying to give. I finally learned what my blood type is (O+) and this time it went much faster than last. I declined the free t-shirt, but boy do they have delicious cookies!
NOM NOM
The adventure continued later that day because I was feeling pretty good and thus forgot I even gave blood. Luckily my body reminded me when I went racing up some stairs delivering mail to the various departments there and oh gawd the hall is spinning I'mgonnaliedownhereasdjfffff...
I was reclined on a nice chair in the Library and managed to catch my breath after 5 minutes. Yeah, that'll remind me not to do THAT again.
The bonus ending bit of the adventure was coming home to peel off the gauze and bandaid. I waited 4 hours like they instructed and it peeled off easily. yup, looks pretty good and *POP*--
I started bleeding a good bit out of the puncture area.
"Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!"
Luckily I know how to get a wound cleaned and rebandaged with one hand. How do I know this? I have no idea... I think necessity give me a +2 to my INT score. It's all good and non-bleeding now so I think today's adventure is done. Lesson to take away from this--
Don't race up stairs after donating blood. XD
Let my duh moment be a lesson.

Post-Illness Hunger
General | Posted 15 years agoI was gravely ill last Wednesday and I've noticed that many people I knew or had contact with last week were (or are) sick as well. Something crazy infectious is going around I guess!
Now, I wonder how one can tell when they're "officially" over that cold/illness? What feeling, cue, or moment does your body tell you that the worst is over and you're going feel like a living being again? For me, it's when I get ravenously hungry after the cold.
The day I end up eating 6 meals in a little under 12 hours is usually the indication that I'm well again. Or well enough that I'm not sick, cause I'm sure my cholesteral and sugar levels would say something different. :3
Hoping you all have health!

Gallery Feature Meme
General | Posted 15 years agoI agreed to do this, just to get around I suppose, but there's a lot of interesting stuff out there and who knows, maybe it'll be fun. Anyway, here are the rules:
The first 10 people to comment on this journal (who have actual art in their gallery of their own hand, not just commissions or stories) will be listed below, with three of their submissions linked that I liked. The only catch: if I link to you on here, you have to make this same journal on your end, AND list me in the first slot with three of my works.
(Accordingly, the first person listed below is the one who listed me in their journal)
So comment away, and I shall browse your gallery and add you below.

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4927119/ I love interesting perspectives and this one... well it is self-explanitory.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4829963/ I like the consistancy of the background art, plus the mirror reflection is a nice detail.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4120053/ WIPs can really tell you something about the artist's inner workings. I think this one says "Genius" with the pencilling.

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5066284/ Since Lauren does stories rather than art, I will point out this one as an interesting depiction of how super-powered peoples would be handled. :)
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5109472/ What's crazier then a gender changing story? A gender changing story where the character sires children! Kids are going to be confused! :D
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4568145/ Time travel is an iffy subject, but this one has an interesting premise that the time frame is relatively small, yet can hold a big impact on people's lives.

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3523280/ I love the skin tones against the green tones of the clothing. It works well together here.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1832919/ I love group shots because it takes skill to draw bodies this close together. I think this one turned out quite well.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1140381/ This one is all sorts of sad emotional art and I like that when a piece brings out emotion from me.

The Name Game
General | Posted 15 years agoI recently uploaded a sketch to my scraps of a giant demoness, but as imclosing in on the final design for her I realize I don't have a name yet.

So... how do you come up with names for your characters, places, settings, etc? When I run my tabletop RPGs like D&D or Shadowrun, I find I borrow names often from older video games I've played a lot. However, if I'm going to do some meaningful world-building, I should try harder than that. :)
Again, so what are your secrets for naming characters and things? Do you use online baby name registries? I do that often myself. Maybe you play word games, mix-n-match pieces and letters, or perhaps it just comes to you naturally. Share your thoughts.

Reliving the Magic
General | Posted 15 years agoI have a daughter and one thing that is such a benefit of having children is that you can relive the good points of your childhood through them. For example, I remember loving Christmas and believing in Santa when I was a little kid. It was so much fun waking up on Christmas morning and seeing what I got. Good times. Then when I grew up I learend about the truth behind Santa and how things work in the real world. Chtistmas was still fun, but not Magical fun, you know?
Well now I'm here watching my daughter talk about Santa and learning how he brings presents and I can see that same fun magic that I had as a kid. It is nostalgic in a good, fun way. I can feel some of the magic again and it brings back the memories I never want to forget.
Though one thing I do want to forget is the fact I have a bad cold right now and a wife nagging me to build this toybox thing for my daughter before tomorrow. My kingdom for a dose of NyQuil...
Lesson to you kids out there-- don't grow up too fast!

Luck vs. Skill
General | Posted 15 years agoMy siblings came over for Thanksgiving and we played a few rounds of Super Mario Kart DS. Now, in pretty much every Mario Kart game in the series (except for the original) there is an evil weapon you can acquire called the Blue Shell. The Blue Shell's job is to home in on whoever is in first place and obliterate them in a bright flashy nuclear explosion.
Ouch.
After playing one level where no fewer than SIX of these little buggers were flying around the track, we got to discussing (again) on how much the Blue shell turns skill into luck. Since dodging a Blue Shell is two steps to the left of impossible, all your skill in racing your little go kart doesn't help much. You need luck to be able to either get to the finish line before the shell hits, not be in first place when the shell comes a knocking, or (with some skill) slam the brakes so that the explosion takes out the karts following behind you.
The first point is that even highly skilled players can lose the race to a lucky driver who happened to be at the right distance, going around the smoldering kart and take 1st place. The second point is that it's a love/hate relationship. I hate being hit by the Blue Shell, but I love when it takes out the rival in front of me. In a way, it makes races more interesting.
And it means on rare occasions I actually can beat my highly skilled brother at that game. :)

The Media's Influence on Me
General | Posted 15 years agoYesterday I was at Walmart with my daughter and my mom. The power at Walmart goes out and the first thing that comes to my mind is the fastest route to the Sporting Goods section in case of a zombie attack.
