Gaylaxicon in a month! SQUEEEE!!!! Also: furry proliferation
Posted 13 years agoSo, yeah, Gaylaxicon is coming up the first weekend in October, and I'm supes excited! If you don't know what I'm talking about, check it out:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3774283/
It's a sci-fi/fantasy convention here in MN for LGBT and friends, starting on October 5th. There are two reasons this one excites me in particular:
1) Queer-focused: LGBT issues don't get a lot of play in the mainstream nerd kingdom (which surprises me a little, since you'd think there'd be creative gold there), so it's wonderful to see a convention that not only provides a safe place for people like me, but also celebrates a part of us that gets more scorn than we deserve.
2) FURRIES!!!! Gaylaxicon has a bunch of furry programming and guests this year. Did you know that furries and the LGBT community have a lot of overlap? I know, shocking!!! It's really cool that they're reaching out to us, and I'll be happy to bring more people into the.... herd? Fandom? Fluff pile?
Actually, I feel like there have been a lot more furry things in general over the past few years: more cons, more participation, more furs coming out of the woodwork. Does anybody else notice this? Do you think furries are becoming more mainstream? Is everyone else finally outgrowing the negative image we get?
Please extrapolate! I'd love to hear what you think. :3

Posted 13 years agoWhere has the Manticore been?
Posted 13 years ago...he's been working!
Manticores are rare, perhaps some of the rarest mythical beasts out there. They're very hard to find, especially when they are employed.
I've got a new job working for Wells Fargo, and I'm SUPER pumped for it. It's quite a raise over my previous job, and the work seems more to my liking. The people are friendly, if a bit stereotypically office-friendly, but there's some good folks.
I'm also living with Donovan for the time being (and hopefully forever, let's be honest). Work in the big city means trying to shorted the commute as much as possible, and that means moving in. Things have been going well, and I expect that trend to continue.
Other than that, I've been volunteering with Minnesotans United for All Families a lot. We're doing our best to defeat the anti-gay marriage amendment that's on the ballot this year. Vote No in November!!!!!! It's a lot of talking to strangers (Dimby talking boisterously to people he's never met? Insane!), but it feels good to be working for something I really care about. I might even get one of my experiences put up on the website for some promotional materials. Yay!
Other than that, I've been trying to cook more, exercise a bit, and enjoy the few nights I have free. I hope y'all are doing well. Feel free to ask me questions if you have any. I'm not posting much while I settle into this new job, but I'm still lurking.
Peace!

SNOW DAY! SNOWDAYSNOWDAYSNOWDAY!!!!!!!!
Posted 13 years agoHi, all!
We finally had a real snowstorm here in Minnesota. It's been a disappointing winter for the snow-lovers like myself, but today I got to wake up to my world completely covered in the white powder. It's a great feeling. =^w^=
What do you like to do in the snow? For me, I really hope to go sledding before it all melts. I haven't been yet this season, and I have plenty of saucers and sleds that need to be busted out.

~*~*~*~ Happy New Year! ~*~*~*~
Posted 14 years agoThere's a part of me that wants to say that 2011 was a huge year for me, and in many ways, it was. I graduated from college, met my loving boyfriend, went to my first furmeet (and my first con), and felt like a real adult for the first time in my life. It's a good feeling.
On the flip side, though, there are so many things I want to do. The biggest thing is finding a career for myself. I've been searching for analyst and consulting positions among other things, but nothing has come up so far. For now, I'm living with my parents now. A lot of people tell me there's no shame in it, but it still doesn't sit right with me.
This isn't a time to be negative, though. I feel so, so blessed to have my friends and family. You mean the world to me, and I want to thank each and every one of you for making my year wonderful. I'm incredibly grateful for every watcher, every comment, every furson that says hi to me or hung out at MFF.
I hope that you have a wonderful and safe New Year. Life is only going to get better, and I wish you all the best. Now go get unabashedly crunk! >:3
...
Still here? Okay, then, you get a meme! Ganked from
aerak
1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
Choreographed a dance for a group of people (I still need to post that >>;)
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't usually make resolutions, mostly because I think the vast majority of them are bullsh*t. Self-improvement doesn't happen overnight; I prefer to make the small changes where I need them. :3
3. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?
I'll be at my friend Amber's house. We went to prom together in high school, and it's a great time to catch up some of my old buds.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
I've been very lucky this year.
5. What countries did you visit?
Stayed in the US. Went next door to WI, though. That place falls right into the Uncanny Valley. =>w>=
6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
A career. And a roommate that's also just a mate. *wink*
7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I met
donovan on March 12th, 2011. I went back to his place a week later.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Graduation from college was a big one, especially since I did almost a whole stats minor in a semester.
9. What was your biggest failure?
No job as of yet.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing that I can remember. I'm a healthy guy.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7064413
12. Where did most of your money go?
Don't have much money to speak of, but a lot went to college expenses. The biggest single thing was probably MFF. WORTH IT!!!
13. What song will always remind you of 2011?
"Glitter in the Air" by Pink. I first heard it January of this year, and I've been listening to it a lot lately. I'm proud to say I can answer "yes" to everything in the lyrics. Give it a listen sometime.
14. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I'm satisfied; no regrets.
15. What do you wish you'd done less of?
See #14.
16. What was your favorite TV program?
Mythbusters. ALWAYS Mythbusters. I'm so sad they're tour isn't coming anywhere near here. :<
17. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I'm sure there is, but I usually do my best to let those people just go. The thing that squicks me the most, though, happened at a furmeet. Someone didn't bring enough money, so they told the waitress, "I don't have enough money for a tip, so can I give you a hug instead?" Grow the fuck up and learn to manage your money. That waitress is a saint. I ended up tipping her a significant amount.
18. What was the best book you read?
I'm currently reading Isolation Play by
kyell. Go buy both of his books in the series so far.
Also, I.S.O. by :codyvfrost:.
Also, The Art of Racing in the Rain.
19. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Killers. "Hot Fuss" is one of the most amazing albums I've ever heard.
20. What was your favorite film of this year?
I'm not a huge movie guy. I guess I'd pick one of the movies I saw with Donovan.
21. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
My birthday was the 26th of October, and I turned 23. Donovan's mom made an awesome Chinese meal, and I DM'd part of my friends' campaign.
22. What kept you sane?
The good people of the world.
23. Who did you miss?
Donovan, 'cuz he's in San Diego until tomorrow. My China friends. My college friends.... a lot of people, actually.
24. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011.
The people that love you will always be there for you, no matter what you spring on them.
25. What's the biggest thing you hope for in 2012?
2011 was very kind to me. I hope 2012 is kind to you and yours. =^w^=

Quick, Sappy Update
Posted 14 years agoA few days ago, I posted a picture of Donovan's apartment (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7064413). Tonight, we went back there to reminisce and give the place a proper send-off. All the stuff is packed up, and the only thing left is cleaning. The room's ready for its next inhabitants. It's empty. It's bare.
It's heartbreaking.
I'm a sentimental guy, and I get attached to things easily: places, ideas, people... It saddens me thinking I'll never go back there. Donovan and I have so much history there, and I'll miss it. I just keep reminding myself that there's only greater things on the horizon.
I hope you all find happiness. There will be ups and downs in life, hellos and goodbyes. I pray you face each new day with confidence and hope, and that your remember that every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end.
I'll just leave one of my favorite songs here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3stsDXki__U

Posted 14 years agoMidwest Furfest!!! HUZZAH!!!
MFF was my first con, and I gotta say, it was an amazing time where just about everything went right. Chicago's my favorite city, and the Hyatt was a wonderful hotel space, especially since everything was very centrally located. I'm super excited to hear that they will be hosting for years to come. I will DEFINITELY try to make it again next year and every year thereafter.
Thursday
donovan and I had a 6:00 AM flight from Minneapolis to O'Hare. It went quickly, and I got to read quite a bit of Kyell Gold's "Out of Position." I'm a little over halfway through, and I'm loving it.
We spent the day taking care of some errands, mostly buying groceries and getting day passes for the metro. In the evening we walked around Chicago. We meandered into a flock of Canadian Geese, which was kinda surreal, and saw some helicopters floating around the sky. I'm pretty sure they were filming for the next Batman movie, which is pretty cool.
We finished out the night with deep dish pizza and some bar hopping in the gay district, then turned in to get some sleep.
Friday
Registration took a while, but was pretty efficient once it got going (HUGE THANKS to the con volunteers!). I went to several panels, including the "Meet the Guests of Honor" with
rickgriffin, where I got to ask all about Housepets! AND I GOT A KING TAG!!!
The rest of the day was panels and events, like Uncle Kage's story hour, Whose Lion? (soooo happy to do more improv), and lots of dancing. Alexander, aka
shroompicker was freakin' hilarious at Whose Lion, btw. XD
Also, Baby Kangaroo.
Saturday
SkyRyd3r and
kwik gave a great dance workshop. Sky was in the Taun-Taun costume, and I learned quite a bit. I hope I can become part of their group,
last-fur-one someday.
Plenty of panels, dealer's den, more dancing, and shows with Colson Grainger and The Neo-Futurists rounded out the day. Fursuit charades was fun, too, though I liked dancing with Donovan the best. :3
I also bought one of
astolpho's prints from the "Apex Predator" series. Guess which one? :3
Fursuit parade!!!!!! Also, it was a furry dream come true when I got to take a picture with
wolfpuptk. He's a cool guy; check him out. =^w^=
Sunday
The three big highlights were the Fursuit Dance Competition (Congrats, Kendi!), meeting
rikkulion, and the deaddog dance. It was a great way to close the con.
Monday
We spent some more time in Chicago, ate some delicious, delicious hot dogs, and got home safely.
I can't wait to do more Conventions. If you've never been to one, I sincerely hope you get the chance to go to one. It's the most fun I've had in a while. =^w^=

MFF Meme (First Con YAY!!!!)
Posted 14 years agoStolen from
ssvanti
Where will you be?
I'll probably be doing as many panels and activities as possible. This is my first big con, and I want to see it all!
Where are you staying?
The main hotel
Do you do free art?
If by "do" you mean "accept." :3 I'm not an artist, but I might be commissioning some stuff.
Do you do trades?
I can probably draw a 1-minute sketch?
Do you do commissions?
Nope.
Do you do badges?
I have a couple badges, and maybe I should get a MFF one? We'll see.
Will you have art in the Art Show? General or Adult sections?
This is clearly an artist-based questionnaire.
What is your gender?
All man, baby. >:D
How old are you?
23
Are you taken? Are you looking for a 'mate'?
I'll joined at the hip with
donovan for most of the con. He's my mate and I love him.
Can I touch you?
Just ask first, please. Also, regular bathing rules apply.
Can I invite you out for food/fun/etc?
If we hit it off, by all means! I like meeting new people.
Can I talk to you?
Certainly! I'm usually the one to initiate conversations, and I really appreciate it when someone wants to talk.
Can I give you stuff?
I have plenty of stuff. If it's something con-related, then perhaps, but I don't like being handed junk.
What day are you getting there?
The 17th sometime, but we might be looking around the city for a while.
Who will you be with?
I'll be with donovan almost all the time, but I am looking forward to meeting a lot of the fursuiters that I really admire, especially
wolfpuptk. I've wanted to meet him for a while.
What suits will you have?
No suit to my name (yet). Looking forward to the parade, though.
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
If you are in suit, then absolutely! Otherwise, it'll be a bit weird.
How tall are you?
5'10", brown hair
You look pissed off out of suit, can I come up to you?
Best to give me room for a minute. I'll be back to happy in no time.
Are you nice?
A professor once told me I'm the most diplomatic student he's ever had.
Are you cliquey?
I like meeting people, but if I am hanging out with friends, I won't usually leave them.
Do you have an artist table?
Not an artist and no.
Do you like parties?
I'll check them out. "Party" is a large term and can take on many meanings. I like conversation in a small room, but I LOVE the dance floor.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Just come up and say hello. Or, if you really want to impress me, use the following secret pass phrase:
"Let's whisk 2 or 3 eggs and change our Facebook pics to boring seagulls." One BILLION points to you if you know to what I am referring.
Can I hang out with you?
If I don't have plans, then sure! I'm always up for adventure.
Who else is going?

Will you have art in the Art Show? General or Adult sections?
This is clearly an artist-based questionnaire.
What is your gender?
All man, baby. >:D
How old are you?
23
Are you taken? Are you looking for a 'mate'?
I'll joined at the hip with
donovan for most of the con. He's my mate and I love him.Can I touch you?
It's my birthday. :3
Posted 14 years agoAnd now I'm 23. =^w^=
Hope you all have a great day. I'm going to have dinner with
donovan's family and DM some D&D.
Stay classy!

Posted 14 years agoHey, all!
I hope things with you are all well. For me, life has been progressing normally. I'm still looking for a job, but I have an interview on Tuesday, so cross your fingers for me.
On the furry side of things, my mate donovan commissioned something special from jailbird, and it made me melt. We'll both be attending the October Minnesota Furry Gathering (OMFG!!!!) this weekend, and hopefully we'll have a good costume.
To top it all off, Donovan bought me a "Yiff the Cook" apron for taking care of him after he had surgery a while back. I donned it (and nothing else >:3) when we made crepes this past weekend. It was like living through that one Adam Wan comic.
Outside that, the D&D session I'm running is going well, my friends and family are healthy, and I feel truly blessed to have all that I have. I with the same thing on all of you.
Take care, and be kind to one another.

Posted 14 years agoOofta!
Just got back from a weekend of camping with Donovan at the Interstate Park in Wisconsin (MN side closed due to government shutdown BOOOO). For those of you that have been enjoying the climate controlled cocoon of air conditioning, it's FREAKIN HOT outside. We planned this trip about a month ago, though, so there was no turning back. I've never been one to back down from a challenge (ask about the turbine trip sometime). It was the first time that either of us had been camping without our respective families, so there was a lot we knew that could go wrong.
I've done ton of camping before, but Donovan was used to being in a camper (cheater!). Luckily, we had plenty of stuff from his parents and the camping boxes from my family. Not too much went wrong, though the first fire took a while and the second one was a wee bit too hot for the bacon *coughgreasefirecough*. I was able to get the tent and tarp set up, and my big elk proved to be amazing with the food, so all was taken care of. =^w^=
Overall, it's a decent campsite with nice hiking, but more seclusion on the campsites would have been nice. In any case, we're going to wait until it's not 103 degrees to go camping again. XD
Fun times indeed. Now, a meme! Cuz I saw
sigmax do it!
1. Do you and your fursona look alike? (I took out the quotation marks around fursona because I'm all about the furmonology. :3)
Yep, he was designed that way: my body type, lots of hair all over, and with a beard. Apart from species, he's pretty close.
2. Do you and your "fursona" share attires?
Dimby's naked most of the time. When he is wearing pants, though, they're my khakis. Actually, if you look at the original SFW ref sheet, he's wearing the same underwear I've got on right now. =owo=
3. Do you share the same sexuality as your fursona?
Indeed!
4. If you changed your fursona to be more like you, how do you think he/she would look?
...like a human? I dunno, my fursona's already just designed after me, so... yeah.
5. Did you work hard to develop your fursona? What is the (brief) history of your fursona?
He's evolved over a loooooooooooooooong time (9+ years). He was originally part of an original collaborative story my friends and I wrote, but only my closest friends get to hear the whole story.
6. Do you and your fursona share relationship status?
Yes,
donovan is my IRL boyfriend.
7. Do you find yourself jealous or upset if you get paired with someone you don’t like or your partner does?
I'm not sure what this means. Paired = sexually? Hasn't really come up, though we've both decided that porn is porn, sex is sex, and what matters is that we love each other. =^w^=
In a completely unrelated story, here's Dimby 69-ing Tymbre. XD
8. How would you like your character NOT to be used?
As long as it's not sexual, I'm okay with him being used for just about anything. Just be sure you tell me at some point. Gifts welcome. :3
9. What’s your fursona’s specialty?
Tail stinger, hands down. There's a lot he can do with that thing. Also, break dancing.
10. On a scale of 1-10, how much are you and your fursona alike?
9.3 Dimby is literally just me if I was furry. I might actually be a bit kinkier than he is, but you'd have to ask Donovan about that. XD

Eyes of the Manticore
Posted 14 years agoGonna keep this short because 1) I can't actually read what I'm writing, and 2) I should probs be getting some rest.
As some of you know, I graduated from college this past May, My parents offered me a gift in celebration of it, and I immediately told them I wanted Lasik eye surgery. Today was the procedure, and I have just one thing to say...
HOLY F*** I CAN SEE!!!!!
The procedure was one of the scariest things I've done. Dr. Whiting cut a flap in my eye so that a laser could burn them into a new shape underneath. The procedure was about 60 seconds in each eye, but when your completely blind for about 15 of them and the rest involve a number of tools, it's pretty scary.
Still, though, I heartily recommend looking into it if you can find a way to afford it. This is the best gift I could ask for, and it will save me tons of money in the long run.
Also, I get to pretend I'm a reverse Cyclops from X-Men. =^w^=

My BF fell asleep on my chest while watching My Little Pony
Posted 14 years agoYeah, the brony masses are growing. X3
I got to spend the first half of the weekend with
donovan, and it was fantastic. He brought me to a bar called "The Happy Gnome" for some beer tasting. Never been much of a beer guy, but I must say that the Founders Imperial was pretty delish. The food wasn't bad, either, though a bit pricey.
was nice enough to pay for me. What a sweetie. =^w^=
Afterwards, we went back to his place and I showed him the first MLP episode. He made it about 10 minutes. XD
Don't worry, we finished the two-parter in the morning before eating lunch at an Ethiopian restaurant called "Red Sea." Never had that type of stuff before, and it was pretty tasty. Huzzah for trying new things!

A Grim Day for Minnesota
Posted 14 years agoFor those of you that are not aware, Minnesota has been in the middle of a heated debate for the past several weeks: a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Last night at around 11:30 PM, the House passed the amendment, which means it will appear before voters on the 2012 ballot, a year and a half from now. I have no doubt that it will be voted down, but this entire issue is a major embarrassment for Minnesota and a failure of our legislative system. There are a number of reasons I feel this way:
1) Rights: Our entire governmental system is based on one thing: preventing the powerful or majority from limiting the rights of the weak or minority. Political opinions may sway and the tides may change over time, but codifying a limitation of rights into the most powerful legal document in our state is THE MOST un-American thing our legislature could possibly do. Laws can be flexible; amendments can be there for a long, long time.
2) Redundancy: There is already a law on the books banning gay marriage here. The fact that we've spent so much time and money discussing this issue is appalling. Judges in other states have already struck amendments like this down as unconstitutional, and I've yet to come across a good legislative reason that this amendment is more important than the myriad other issues facing Minnesotans today.
3) Relevance: Homosexuality is a hot topic, no doubt. However, I fail to see the "attack" on traditional marriage. I've been told many things as bisexual man, most of them unpleasant, but I still haven't heard a good reason for why my relationship threatens another person. If anyone knows one, please tell me. My friend Bill has a theory that this is all a ploy; the conservatives are rallying the base on an issue that they can all agree on. I sincerely hope that our legislators aren't using people's rights to play a political game.
I'm ashamed that this amendment is even a question in Minnesota. We're supposed to be way beyond this, and I'm not looking forward to having to seriously question whether or not I want to live here. As representative Steve Simon said, "History will judge us harshly for this."
Hopefully the voters make the right decision. I'll be protesting and getting involved all the way.
