THIS GUY. Also, a question about beat-making.

YEP. GOOD.
Also, I kind of want to try out sampling and beat-making. Can you folks (baddwill) suggest some good stuff for less than $1,000 (baddwill)?
I was thinking maybe an Akai MPC Studio or a Native Instruments Mashine Mikro. They're both about $400. They're both digital which I'm kinda eehhhhh about. It would be handy for the convenience and I would still be able to sample from vinyl, but I feel like they might sound funny...
Technically, all samplers are digital though... and the older ones need media like Zip cards or floppies.

My turntables
General | Posted 13 years agoLeft them at home... They weigh an ass-ton and I never fooled with them last semester. I might bring them back this winter, but they're just so darn heavy! Plus I don't have the most room for them in my apartment.
I'm not done though! I just need to graduate first! Then I'll be right back at it!
Plus I've seen some killer djs with dozens of turntables and mixers in their houses. That seems kinda wasteful and silly to me. I'm going to give all my stuff away every time I upgrade. I'll ship anywhere in the world! All I'd want is a hand-written letter!
Just a thought.

General | Posted 13 years agoI got myself as a nearly post-summer present, the single to this:
https://youtu.be/YmHziduwBgI
as well as Peanut Butter Wolf's break rec! BOY you guys going to get SO SICK of hearing the Night Rider theme!
I also bought something from Teams and also Baddwill off of bandcamp.
http://orangemilkrecords.bandcamp.c.....album/champion
http://baddwill.bandcamp.com/
and I also got the record and download of Kavinsky's "Nightcall" because I've only been obsessed with that freaky song since the first time I heard it.
http://kavinsky.bandcamp.com/album/.....ll-ep-roadgame
Is that vinyl worth 17 euros to me?
Yes. Yes it is.

If you want some scratches....
General | Posted 13 years agoGo ahead and send me any tracks that you would like me to scratch over. I'll do my thing (for free!!!) and send it back in about a week or so with:
1 mp3 of your song with my scratching over it
1 mp3 of just the scratches so that you can rearrange them and change the EQs, just in case (since I'm still sorta bad at timing and EQs!)
ALSO, I need a new DJ moniker. Pretty much anything I can think of is taken (including DJ 00), so go ahead with the suggestions! I'll try them out until something sticks!
ALSO ALSO, I want to commission some art for some kinda crazy furry animal thingy. Suggestions open for that too. What should it be? I'm tired of just being a picture of Japanese money!

General | Posted 13 years agoThe best cartage for scratching since around the time I was born has been the Shure M44-7. I like it quite a bit. There's a rival to it which is the same price made by Ortofon called the RF7. I just ordered an Ortofon headshell and RF7 and I'm going to see which I like best!
In the mean time, I only have 1 needle between 2 turntables! I've been using an MP3 player to play the breaks (and
Baddwill , I've been using a lot of your beats!). But soon I'll be able to use two turntables. Looking forward to that! I'll also see about posting a weekly scratch session to my blog or on Youtube. I'll let you know!
I came close to buying Traktor Scratch from Native Instruments, but man, it's $300! Considering I've never had a full-time job and I don't even have a part-time job at the moment, I just couldn't stomach it. Some time in the future though!

You could say...
General | Posted 13 years agothat I got a big package....
in the mail...
Got a used Technics 1200 MKII in the mail yesterday. It's also black and not the usual silver which is kinda cool. Played with it for about an hour, and let me tell you some things:
1. Heavy as hell
2. GOOD GOD THE TORQUE!!! Jeeeez... it would be easier to stop a freight train! I have to learn how to scratch all over again!
3. The pop up light is adorable. I know it burns out and is usually the first thing to go wrong, but... I LOVE it! It's like having a Diglett on your turntable!
I also found out that we finally got high-speed internet at my house, (something I really needed at 16 years old, but had to wait until I was almost 22!). So, I'll be practicing more, posting more, and may even set it up so I could steam a scratch session once I'm not so bad!

BIG NEWS
General | Posted 14 years agoNew Years resolution. Here we go.
I am getting a used Technics by mid February. After that, (and I'll let you know), I will scratch on any track you send me. If it doesn't sound any good, or maybe you'd like something else, I'LL REDO IT.
I need the practice you see. And I think all you furry rappers and beatmakers might be kinda sick of using canned samples of scratching am I right?
I will scratch on ANYTHING by the way, not just limited to hip-hop!
I'LL LET YOU KNOW. In the meantime, tell your friends, tell you parents.

There's a story about why I named my blog sleepmode (slyypmaud)
It's about a girl with big teeth and a piss poor personality.

Japanese Records
General | Posted 14 years agoI just bought about a dozen Japanese records and a t-shirt from the coolest little record store I've ever been in. It's called Hatsukoi Record "First/Sweet Love Record". I honestly only saw about 15% of what the guy had, but I was picking up every 4th record I touched.
It was funny. Japanese people do not sweat, I swear to god. My friend was just fine, but I was dripping foreigner sweat on all the album covers. I hope the owner doesn't mind considering I just dropped around $50 in his store.
I picked up some anime OST's on vinyl, and a power ranger's soundtrack or something. That will be really fun to play with when I get home. I was just like, "DAMN! DAAAYYUM! That's cool, and that's cool, and I like the cover on that!". Not to mention they were having a 30% off sale.
I don't know if you're familiar with the term, but I was trying not to "DEEESUUUU!!!" too hard. I said in Japanese that his record store was very cool and that I liked it very much. I was picking stuff up while I was standing at the cash register.
Anyway, get jelly.

Music I like
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm really into instrumental hip-hop. Any shape and form. Bandcamp is a wonderful website.
Peep the technique.
http://teeeams.bandcamp.com/album/t.....s-star-slinger I love Teams. I want to buy one of their vinyls really bad. Their clear or smoke colored.
http://kingboom.bandcamp.com/
Has Lo and Apollo Brown are also really good. They're from Detroit I think.
http://mellomusicgroup.bandcamp.com/
Some others I like are:
http://collectiveresonance.bandcamp.....x-mega-x-sonic
http://dasracist.bandcamp.com/album/shut-up-dude
Haven't found a record store in Japan. But, I now know what the top 3 Japanese battle records are, and how to import them into the U.S. for a very reasonable cost.

New Records, but Leaving in a Month
General | Posted 14 years agoI bought some new break records! Go me! I'm also saving up and selling some stuff to get a new mixer. Bad news is, I'm going to Japan in September. I might be able to find some really sweet records there though. I might even meet some Japanese scratch djs. They are seriously insane and I'm sure I'll learn a bunch of new stuff if I manage to track one down! Wish me luck!
My Gear
General | Posted 14 years agoThis is my setup basically.
Numark DM1001X 2-channel mixer
Staton T.62 direct drive turntable
and some funny cables and two laptops for playing and recording music
What I'd like someday when I can justify the cost:
2 Stanton ST8.150 turntables or Technics 1200s
a Rodec Scratchbox, or an Ecler mixer
an MPC pad (someday... ooohh someday)
And Traktor Scratch!
