Finally I have both parents on board with the dog situation.

And, if all goes according to plan, mother will go with me to the local SPCA in the following week and help me pick a dog. Though he/she will be my dog and my responsibility, I felt it would only be fair to give her a say - I'm living under my parents' roof right now, and they'll be helping financially with the dog for probably the next year or two.

My biggest anxiety now is hoping that Brownie will be able to handle another dog in his space. He's been an only dog his whole (long, long) life - he's generally dog friendly, but he's never had another dog in his territory. He's old and he's sick - I won't go through with this, despite how badly I want it, if it looks like it will be stressful and help his illness progress.

I stopped by the shelter on my own last week - always an intense experience. This SPCA plays classical music to help calm the animals. By a twist of fate, as soon as I walked in, the song changed to a slow, mournful violin piece. I would have been amused by the timing, but the stench of feces and the sudden deafening howls of lonely dogs all around me realizing someone was coming in kind of neutralized the humor.

It was fascinating seeing the variety of animals there, in appearance and in personality. I couldn't help grinning at an adorably hideous little girl named Shiloh, a 15 year old pomeranian/pug mix with eyes bugging out of her head. Many abandoned pit bulls, of course, especially puppies - they wagged their tails and bounded up and down gleefully, seeming to have no idea that they were in a shelter.

I glanced into one enclosure that appeared empty, and was about to pass it by when a gigantic German Shepherd came lumbering inside from the kennel run. He walked up to me and sniffed, then wagged his tail slowly, politely. Kind of dog that makes you almost feel humbled, just such a majestic creature.

I could easily go on and on, but needless to say, I found all of them interesting individuals. I wish them all well - and I hope I'll be able to show one of them happier times.

Find a dog in need of rescue I want AND that might be compatible with my current dog, within a reasonable distance from me. Not -too- difficult...

STEP TWO:
Convince both parents this dog is okay. Now this, this is difficult.

STEP THREE:
Fill out ridiculously long application.

STEP FOUR:
Wait for a response. THIS. IS PAINFUL. waiiiit. waiiiiit....
