Comic Help!
General | Posted 16 years agoHey guys!
Alright well first things first, I'm doing a massive upload tonight for some commissions and other artwork, ( okay maybe not 30 pics but enough) but until then here's where you can find the other commissions list.
http://www.furaffinity.net/journals/donryu/
Anyway... I need some help. Some of you may have known about some of the comics I've been working on. Well one of the mini projects is coming to a head here and I'm about to start the final coloring and inking. One thing that I do need help on is for dialogue bubbles. Now while the dialogue isn't the big pusher of the story itself but in the vein of presentation I would like to know how to make some decently presentable dialogue bubbles.
also, what's a good size to post the pages in? For both the sake of resolution and making sure that both the movements and dialogue is readable.
The help would be most appreciated! Thanks a lot people!

Regarding Lilo & Stitch my love for the franchise is limited to the movie and movie only. I can't stand the TV series, anime series, or mini movie that kicked off the tv series. I hate that they took Stitch and turned it into pokemon. Gotta catch 'em all! Err... find all our cousins! If anything the only reason why I somewhat enjoy Lilo and Stitch 2 is because they animated Stitch correctly and gave him the correct shades of blue.
Anatomy and color being only the tip of the iceberg as to what I think is wrong with either or of the series'.
This came up after being asked countless times for roleplaying as, for, or including Stitch. I don't roleplay so I suppose it's irrelevant anyway.
Anyway..
Commissions list updated tomorrow, here's the current one.

Official FWA Report
General | Posted 16 years agoI want to say this off the bat. While this was by far not my most profitable FWA this was most certainly my favorite one.
amonomega and I both felt like there should have been some afterglow and and pillow talk with everyone involved after the whole ordeal.
I also want to thank EVERYONE for being so cool to my friend
psychoshounen This was her first Furry con and you were all really awesome and on your best behavior.
THURSDAY
psychoshounen ,
vincentwolfe and I arrive at the convention. I have all 5 billion of my bags and slowly lose circulation to my arms and possibly everything under my neck as we carry everything up to the room. I get my stuff ready and soon go to the Artist's alley where we get ourselves acclimated to the artist's atmosphere there at the con.
seanblackthorne
strider_orion and
kerstinorion come over to check on me. Needless to say I was overwhelmed with feelings of awesome being that I love the three of them to death. I also made darn sure to give Kerstin a hug being that last con I was so tired I didn't even notice her. So I gave her a hug every chance I got. We then all retired around 12 at night.
FRIDAY
I wake my butt up around 6 am, do my morning excersizes. Didn't really sleep so much as I laid down and stared at the ceiling. Beds were super uncomfortable. Regardless I hauled my butt down to the Artist's alley where in which I sat down and tried to get some early sales in before the dealer's room opened. In which I did which was moderately successful. Caught a glimpse of
blotch peaking into the artist's alley. (Sorry, the classy hat was a dead giveaway :P) So after all was said and done I made my way to the Dealer's Den around 11 am and set up my super awesome table. I was so ready. I got 500 BITCHIN' business cards, had a little card holder for those as well as a standee with prices and such on it. And I have to say I did have a great deal more room to work. I saw
blotch there and made myself known by handing them a gift I've been waiting for 2 years to give to them. ( http://www.furaffinity.net/view/560412/ ) It was strange. After a series of events where in which a lot of my artistic inspirations turned out to be epic let downs I wasn't expecting Blotch to be so cool. In fact they were ridiculously cool. That was probably one of the most satisfying parts of the con. Sitting on the way but right in my line of vision was
gideon whom of which I proceeded to unleash my inner fanboy that had ravaged poor Blotch not but minutes earlier as I shoved my sketchbook in Gideon's. Thankfully the man's patience is that of a saint and he more than happily added to my giant and grand collection of art in my guest book.
twile later stopped by my table and proceeded to give me an official Stitch plushy only sold in the park. You know, a plushy involving one of the biggest inspirations in the world to me warrants a super awesome hug. So I gave him one. Thanks a lot man. I mean it from the bottom of my heart.
Soon after the Dealer's Room closed.
vincentwolfe
amonomega
psychoshounen and I were supposed to go to dinner, but NOOOOOO, it wasn't just us,
amonomega and his handsomeness charmed his way into getting
cooner and
blotch to come along with us on our journey of indecision and eventually dinner at Hooters... go figure eh? Well being the sporting chap I am ( and the fact I feel multiple checks makes things far more complicated) I picked up the bill ninja-ing it from not just everyone at the table but ESPECIALLY
amonomega ...IN YOUR FACE! :P So after we arrived I went back to the artist's alley to work on stuff and then to bed around midnight.
SATURDAY!!
As per usual, did my 6am wake up call, exercises, artist's alley, then dealer's room. Made a lot of faces at
gideon to make him feel like calling up his lawyer for a sexual harassment case. Suprised
blotch (Who in turn suprised me later) acted very very VERY gay with
amonomega which in turn frightened poor :icon psychoshounen: ( By the way I typically act really gay with
amonomega just did even more so simply because it was a con. The level of homosexuality can be demonstrated here courtesy of the lovely
dior http://i718.photobucket.com/albums/.....gs/FWA/134.jpg ) Got to talking with
dior who was amazingly awesome and eerily simmilar to
psychoshounen I also eventually met up with
dragoneer whom of which I gave prints too since I had done a few Fender pics. I wanted to pinch his cheeks XP
tamarik was cool enough to act as Artist Response Unit for me since I was waiting every so anxiously to meet up with and talk to
gnaw and get him to put a sketch in my awesome guest book. In which he did... I'm a happy Donovan. Along with that I met with
maxblackrabbit and did a sketch for him in one of his sketchbooks since he had done one for me oh so long ago.
We wrapped up the day with dinner by being escorted by the lovely
ryunwoofie whom I had known from the art institute. We all ended up meeting up with gideon cooner blotch amonomega and the rest of us being vincentwolfe and psychoshounen and I. While cramped at the Taco Mac I did have a great deal of fun being able to talk to everyone.
Wrapped up the day after returning to the con, doing some work at the Artist's alley and doing some work there, then heading up to my room.
SUNDAY
The dreaded last day of the con. Did my usual routine, except waking up an hour later. Went to the artist's alley then to dealer's room in which I got an awesome sketch from cooner ( don't worry I'll be scanning and sending soon) as well as doing a trade with the reknown mobianfox getting a really awesome watercolor painting in my book, in a trade for me to do a badge in which I will be happy to do once my commissions list is up and running. We wrapped up the con by leaving around 3 pm and heading on home where I eventually passed out from sheer awesome.
My special thanks goes out to,
vincentwolfe who through his tireless effort made sure mine and psychoshouen 's butts got to the con but helped bring food pack stuff, and do a whole lot of grunt work for us. Without him, the con would have been a hell of a lot less fun.
rama who organized the Dealer's room so well. helping me out with all the fun and stupid little assinign questions I had :P
gideon blotch cooner gunmouth kamicheetah maxblackrabbit and gnaw who all graciously put up with my fanboy antics.
amonomega whom of which fanboyed with me and gayed out with for the majority of the con. The con's fun level doubled just by having him around in all seriousness.
And especially psychoshounen who was awesome enough to come out to visit me and go to the con with me.
Guys it was a hell of a con. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

FWA/ Portfolio
General | Posted 17 years agoI'll be posting a fairly awesome FWA report on Wednesday but in the mean time;
Thank you all so much this has probably been one of the best FWA's ever. I promise I will make an epic journal entry thanking everyone involved properly later..
This includes commissions as well. I will post a thurough commissions and trades list. For the time being I will request that ALL people that commissioned me either comment here or note me letting me know. I made a pretty good commissions list in my business book but I would like to make sure it's super accurate.
___________
Now just in case you were all wondering why I had such a panicked look on my face during the con was because I had a portfolio review the Monday following... the final verdict..
I PASSED LIKE AN OLD PERSON IN A NURSING HOME!! So I go onto portfolio and hopefully graduation in the summer.
Alright guys, be back on the 25th!

So About that Watchmen
General | Posted 17 years agoSo that makes it sound like I hated the movie.
****(SPOILERS AHOY!!)****
Well I didn't but I did feel however the movie was less than what it could have been. By far this movie was the best adaptation of a of an Allan Moore comic ever.
I will start with this. While it is a decent enough adaptation the movie doesn't hit on enough points that gave it a lot more gravity to it's own conflict while it dwelled on far more inconsequencial scenes. For instance when Night Owl and Silk Specter do the horizontal bop in the ship took waaaayy too long. While I have no problem with sex, when you have something so loaded with story like an Allan Moore story, you can't afford to spend as much time as they did with sex. I've never sat there and wanted them to move on with such a thing more in my life. I shouldn't feel that way in a sex scene. But I sat there wanting them to move on with the F@#$ ing story. This movie would have benefited if it were done as a high budget HBO mini-series.
Trying to cram as much as they did into a meager 3 hours didn't work terribly well. Allan Moore is long winded and thorough, but unlike Tolkein everything he talks about is relevant. He takes specific care to make sure every word that is said and every action that is taken is painstakingly important to what's happening in the story. Which is why it's such a shame when they have to skip out on such things. One such example is the Black Freighter arc.
This arc is a story within the story. An old comic that exists within this particular universe which the story acts as a paralell to the state of society. This gave society life as a character. This way you understood, not just from the point of view from the superheroes and government officials, but from society as a whole and how they were shaping. This was not just a reflection on the US, since Allan is a bit more broad minded than that, but on an international level. They COMPLETELY skipped out on this. Again this is why this would have done better as an HBO mini series. They could have spent time developing this plot.
Another issue I had was the ending. While I'm not necessarily having a problem with the small alteration of making Dr. Manhattan into the big cataclysm, (though as a nerd I was amazingly irritated) my problem was with how much of an evil bastard they made Veight out to be. The point of the ending was to feel reasonable toward either Rorschach's philosophy ( No compromise in the face of Armageddon) or Veight's philosophy ( Peace is peace even under the curtains of a lie.) ( Or you could leave it at a Machiavellian end and say the ends justify the means). Both appear very logical in one way or another.
Though I will say this for the movie... they were DEAD ON with Rorschach. Him being my favorite character, and personal philosophy. His meeting with the prison psychiatrist was alright. Though what really gave it a lot more dimension was how you saw the doctor break down instead of Rorschach. While he appeared insane to everyone else, he made the doctor question his own reasoning (in the book). Seeing how his own thought processes clash with the doctor and seeing it destroy the doctor's life is a real excellent parallel showing how Rorschach's snapping point was a real heavy even. Not just the discovery of the murdered little girl.
Okay to end it.
I still repeat what I had to say earlier. 3 hours isn't nearly enough time to cover all of Moore's writing. This isn't a horrible movie, it's actually not bad. But if you really want to see what the big deal is about "The Watchmen" read the book. If you want to be simply entertained; watch the movie.

Leadership ... (and FWA)

Con Stuff
So in regards to FWA, my good friend
cherushi will not be able attend. However
amonomega and
psychoshounen will be at my side so I do look forward to seeing you all there.
I will be offering some prints ( something I haven't done in a while) though only a few because I'm sure a lot of people are a little more interested in actual badges and sketchwork. Though if you all think you'll be purchasing prints speak up!!!

Leadership
So a good friend of mine, Danielle who worked as an animator in one of the projects I had directed approached me in one of my classes. I've known Danielle for a few years now, and the project we worked on consisted of about 85% of good friends, very reliable people and animators. She had asked, in so many words or less, when it came do directing and leadership "How do you do it?"
While I did answer her question to a degree... I then began asking myself that question.
So for the sake of trying to find out where one is going, they must know where they have been. Well at least I think so. I started getting involved with animation back in high school involving a series of competitive art and animation camps. (Going to the Detroit Institute of Fine Arts and Student Animation Workshop in Lansing). The thing that invigorated me was that I was involved with projects. People needed my abilities and asked. While at the student animation workshop, while our project fell through (our team leader had fallen ill and another member suffered a psychological break down) I found myself needed working on a bunch of different projects for other teams involving all sorts of things involving the animation process. While I was new at it, I found myself useful, and that the process came relatively naturally.
Outside of these projects, in high school, I was one of those people that would start on projects and then never finish them. This little thing in itself came to a head here in college. I took my first story boarding class with my teacher Lee Crowe (a former Disney animator who I now work for and study under) I did my first storyboard projects which I started and completed. I think in part I was also passionate about these projects and I was tired of not finishing anything. So I was ready to do it. Part of taking on a project is also seeing it through and I wanted to be part of that. So I make it a point to finishing what I start. Something in which I find particularly important to leadership.
So after completion of my first animatic I then took on an animated short. After having already done the animatic, character designs, color keys, layout, and then main animation, all I asked of my partner was for him to clean up and color the animation. That wasn't done. While I received an A- for the class I was still ticked off. So the next class I received the opportunity to finish the project. I took out my partner's cleanups and his backgrounds and did them myself. I finished the project and I was happy to have a single animation under my belt. It felt good to have something in which I did all the ground work complete like that.
The next project I took on was with two people.
amonomega and Edd two good friends of mine. I had already storyboarded the project, written it, and had the color keys. Character designs were easy because I was using the same characters from the previous project. This particular project was interesting. It was a competitive film challenge in which the whole thing had to be done in a week. I don't know if you've ever animated, colored, and completed an animation in 1 week for a competition but it's rather invigorating whether or not you win.
During this time I had also taken the job as Lee's TA. It was very interesting to be relied on to help others with animation. For the first time in my life people put their confidence in me to help them out. Even more so we had another teacher here ( who ironically shared my names both first and last) The way in which he taught animation to me was not by a simple student to teacher basis but as if I was in the studio working with him. Treating me like another animator. This gave me loads of confidence. To be treated that instead of hoping for excellence, excellence was expected of me. He made a point of telling me that he saw how passionate I was about this. How hard I worked on all the projects I did.
So with the most recent project in which I had worked with Danielle I took all this experience. Lee wanted to change directors to someone who was more reliable, so she offered me the job. I took it reluctantly even though I was on my first Senior project class.
1) I had experience and had accomplished before that I can and do get things done. It's no longer just simply a matter of desire but an acquired work ethic.
2) I keep pushing even with resistance. I love this kind of work and I don't mind working in animation until the day I die.
3) I probably had the unfair advantage of knowing all 30 people in the class. I was inspired to have worked with everyone before in that class. I wasn't talking as "I'm the leader so do what I say" I was talking as, "This is what you and I love to do. This is who we are... now it's time to prove that to everyone else, if only ourselves."
And we did...
I suppose the whole leadership deal boils down to choice. When you take on a project; see it through to the end. Even if you are just one of the workers, make sure your work stands out and work as hard as you can. Finish it, and show that you love to do it. When things aren't looking so hot you can choose to bring them up to speed. Sure you don't HAVE to. But being that it's you that has to make that choice, it's what makes it all that much more important that you do..
So that's what I have to say on that issue.
Sorry to yammer your ears off guys!

So in regards to FWA, my good friend
cherushi will not be able attend. However
amonomega and
psychoshounen will be at my side so I do look forward to seeing you all there.I will be offering some prints ( something I haven't done in a while) though only a few because I'm sure a lot of people are a little more interested in actual badges and sketchwork.

FWA and shtuffff
General | Posted 17 years agoHey everyone!!
Well a lot of people are doing the whole pre-order thing for badges and all but since my commission slate has been empty for quite a while I figured that there really was no point at all.
Anyway yes I will be attending FWA with my good buddy
amonomega and his loveydove
cherushi . I will also have alongside me at my table the amazing
psychoshounen A friend of mine from way in the old days. I do hope to see you all there!
Now onto another pressing subject. If you're wondering where all my new updates are I'll tell you. I've currently been working really hard on a few comics. One of which I will be posting exclusively to FA. A little.. well..adult comic. Since I really have no means of publishing this and nor do I intend to sell it I just felt that I would post it here. It's about 36 pages and the contents.. well I'll start hinting more at that upon completion.
YOUR OPINION IS WELCOME
I'm thinking of posting this at 4 pages every 2 days. My reason being is that I do not want to have the ever so common situation when a person does make an excellent comment in regards to sexual content and the posts are unsteady. Like they can be between days and weeks or even months of each other. And I kinda wanna keep everyone in the mood if that makes sense at all. What do you all think? Suggestions?
Anyway along with this I've been engulfed in school work. Getting my portfolio ready.. and readying myself for the outside world...
Alright guys!! Commissions are open as usual!

Please note me if you are interested I'll get back to you in a reasonable amount of time. Let me know what it is you are interested in, color, sketches, amount of characters and I'll give you an estimate. I apologize ahead of time, I'm still relatively uncomfortable doing adult commissions for others so I will either charge more or outright turn them down.

Gayest thing I've ever done....
General | Posted 17 years agoSo I have since returned from the illustrious Cape Cod and have leaped right back into life. I have to say I got some much needed recharging and work done. Work on personal projects and nothing that was work related. While stagnating as that is.. I needed this quite a bit. So my jump involved a morning shift the day after I arrive and visiting my friend
amonomega
Oh yes this leads to the gayest thing I think I have ever done. Having drawn homo erotica and doing other things of the like... I have to say this wins by a mile...
Alex and I decide to go to the mall. We have some lunch, go to the Godiva chocolate store... he buys a chocolate covered strawberry, and I buy some dark chocolate... We then travel to teavana where I have a teagasm and buy a tin of Samurai Chai and a cup of it. This is then followed by the Disney Store.
This is then followed up by us going to Barnes and Nobles sitting down and having a rather inspiring and awesome discussion regarding art and developing as an artist.
Yeah it's sounding pretty gay right now.. but wait, it gets better.
So as part of the plane we head straight to the movie theater...buy our tickets and head straight for... Twilight.
So let's have a review here. Me and another GUY go to see... that's right... Twilight. If there is one thing you have to understand is Alex and mine's opinion of this was pretty low. My god I couldn't even hold a straight face as he was ordering the tickets. He asks "Two tickets for Twilight please." I lose it..
The movie.. as expected... is God Awful. However because of this expectation I was not dissapointed. He and I were possibly the most annoying people in the whole theater. And man.. what eyebrows.
Overall. I did need this day. To hang out with a good friend, watch a crappy movie and laugh my head off at it. I'm now ready for school... and FWA...
Alright guys take care!
Oh and remember, I'm still taking commissions! If you're interested, lemme know!

About Where I'm At
General | Posted 17 years agoWell here's the Wikipedia link...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_cod
As for the house I'm staying at (My Mom's house)
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.capecodappraisal.com/images/windmill.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.capecodappraisal.com/Photo_Gallery/index.html&usg=__9fWnIUeEpxzGBJwxk4VqTSSV3kA=&h=358&w=296&sz=47&hl=en&start=7&tbnid=7-shL3MSHTWh4M:&tbnh=121&tbnw=100&prev=/images%3Fq%3DWindmill%2BCape%2BCod%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG
Oh yeah.. big link.. sorry.
Well the photo was the best I could dig up. It's the one they use on post cards for Cape Cod. Now this doesn't include the main house. It was taken after my family made renovations to the estate. The Windmill and the majority of the property remained untouched, but the house itself was updated from it's 19th century cute but unliveable conditions (well at least during the winter) Despite protest of the community my family went ahead with it and despite what one would think, almost immediately after that it became an official historic piece of property.
It's actually quite nice here during the winter. While i'm not the biggest fan of cold weather, it's really nice to not have any of the tourists lurking around here. I can go to all my favorite restaraunts and not have to worry about unwavering crowds. Like my favorite place the Squire, http://www.thesquire.com/
They made it a point around here to make sure there are no Mc Donalds, Starbucks, Kmarts, Walmarts, and etc. Definately an interesting place to be.
Anyway that's all for now.
Take care everyone.

Doop Dee Doo...
General | Posted 17 years agoSo for new years I'm hanging out at home. Nothing wrong or great just working my tail off really. While work at Gamestop (POWER TO THE GO f#$% YOURSEFL) hasn't been killing me. I've been submersing myself in loads of other work.
I'm working on an animation that one of my teachers had requested me and a few others to work on. Being that I'm not quite sure how discrete he wants me to be no names shall be mentioned. But the project does have me fairly enthralled to work. So we'll see how that works out.
I'm also working on 3 different comics. 1 is a web comic for a friend of mine. He's an excellent writer. I'll link you all when it's up and running.
2nd is a comic based on one of my own original stories which is ALSO being turned into a webcomic. I'm working with an old friend of mine on this one. I just finished writing season 1. We'll be starting the drawing process in the next few days. Once season 2 is written and the drawing process has started on that I'll get to posting.
The 3d is kinda private.. if only because I wanna save that until I post it. But it's not for the kids XP
Anyway commissions are still open.

So...Desperaux
General | Posted 17 years agoWell alright.
Desperaux had a very promising plot. The artwork is simply beautiful and the character designs are spot on.
This movie however suffered from story A.D.D. We started off with one character and were not introduced to the main character until 20 minutes into the feature. We had the chef's story, the princess' story, the girl from the farm's story, her father's story, and the king's story. This kind of thing made it seem like the book was too big to fit into one movie.
If we had kept our main focus on our Rat friend at the beginning, Desperaux, and the Princess it would have been fine. (Possibly make the King the incidental antagonist).
Do not get me wrong each individual story had a lot of promise. But because they tried to attack each individual story in such a short period of time, each story suffered. What needed to have happened was to keep to the Bill Peet style of writing.
It's a real shame, I was looking forward to this movie. Owell.

Let me know what it is you are interested in, color, sketches, amount of characters and I'll give you an estimate. I apologize ahead of time, I'm still relatively uncomfortable doing adult commissions for others so I will either charge more or outright turn them down.

Well I got a letter back from Chris,
And it seems that yes, the man responsible for making my favorite movie of all time (Well him and Dean Debois) and inspiring me to become an animator and story artist as well as a better artist all around is IN FACT
http://alohalilo.deviantart.com
So please, please please please, go over there and give accolades!!
I personally am extremely excited to have him here (there) on DA.
So yes no suspicions, it's not a troll, it's definately the real deal.

Hey everyone!
Thanks again for the lovely birthday wishes. It was very much appreciated.
Though I have to ask for some help
Well here I am making another post regarding my favoritest most bestest artist in the entire world. Though I want to ask some help from you guys.
http://alohalilo.deviantart.com/
This is supposedly Chris Sanders Deviant Art account. I'm a little concerned and fairly unconvinced that it is him.
For one, the email is different than advertised on his sites. The descriptions are too ambiguous and don't really depict his personality. He's also offering prints without an account. Now if he were to actually offer prints off his own site he could make a hell of a lot more money than with a deviantart printing account (No offense DA) , just by using his own sites. Plus he's been excedingly busy with the production of Crude Awakening to even update Kiskaloo or his main art site, a deviantart account seems to be a strange path of logic if you can't update your other sites. A lot of things don't add up. A lot of people are also going there praising without question! It's absolutely baffling.
So I sent Chris an email regarding the issue earlier this morning. If it's really him, that's cool and I'll probably be all over buying prints. But if not, I'm a little peeved that someone would post his art for a little attention. So if you all could help me verify this, that would be great.
I haven't reported this guy or anything. Acting without rational proof or anything of the like is just silly.
But to be clear. You can see Chris's work here
https://www.chrissandersart.com
and
http://kiskaloo.com/
Oh and just to cover my own butt. Please don't go over there and flame if you find out it's a fraud. Hell, don't go flame period. It's simply bad form.
