Rats Need Love Too
General | Posted 15 years agoRats have received something of a bad rap over the years, what with that food stealing, and the whole "Black Death" thing.
But not all rat's are cheese-stealing, plague-carrying vermin. Some are friendly, hug-able, and damn good at drawing.
Take
Kwan for example...she's all of those things, and more. No, not the cheese-stealing, plague part...the friendly hug-able, good artist part.
Just look at what she surprised me with:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3618811
So if I never have before, let me make sure you all get pointed in her direction. She's a fantastic person, and a great artist with good sense of humor..at least, for a rat. ^.=.^

Holy Cripes!
General | Posted 16 years agoJust over 1,000 submissions. How did that happen?
Actually, I know exactly how it happened. The old FA image shuffle hasn't really been something I feel up to doing lately and while I keep track of journals and comments (which, as always, I'm very fond of), I just haven't felt the desire to invest the time in browsing all the images that come through my inbox each day. Of course, I have only myself to blame - I'm watching a great many people.
But with job searching, working, prepping for a possible return to school and various other personal matters (both good, like the local furgroup, and bad, like my nearing divorce) I've had plenty of real-life things to keep my mind on.
So, fear not FA! I know I haven't been terribly active here as of late, and it's been a long time since I uploaded something, but I haven't vanished entirely. I've just been biding my time...waiting for (as Cpt. Jack would say) the opportune moment. ^.=.^

P.S. Music of the moment:
The TV Show by Manabe Takayuki (I still can't stop listening to this, I think it's addictive!)
The Scheherazade suite by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov which is fast becoming one of my favorite classical suites of all time, especially the first movement, "The Sea and Sinbad's Ship"
Old House by The Night Owls a local blues band I happened to see many years ago which was made up entirely by 14-15 year olds. I liked them enough to grab a CD and I just recently rediscovered them.
Survive by David Bowie particularly the version that was in the old "Omicron: The Nomad Soul" game.
In My Time of Dying by Led Zeppelin Still one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands.

Crazy Weekend
General | Posted 16 years agoIt was a wild weekend, and although I'm a touch sore yet and still reeling, there were plenty of good times I would love to have repeated!
On Saturday the usual group went out for some airsoft action at a homemade field. It was possibly the best set of matches we've had yet, with a bunch of the regulars and a couple newbies mixing it up pleasantly.
Of course, it wasn't without a few greeeeivous wounds... I received a nice little red bump on the forehead after taking a pellet to the head, and a few others got assorted scraps and bumps. All wounded for the glorious cause! Now if we only had a cause....
Sunday was a planned meet in the park. Our organizers (thanks Pedro!) were able to rent a ramada for the evening and we had a pretty good turnout. Aaaaand then it decided to monsoon.
It started out as just a drizzle, but when the jumping castle next to us pulled up stakes and started to roll away, we decided a new venue (preferably one with walls...) might be in good order.
So we all wound up at Denny's...*
After a meal, some good table-talk and some decision making, the meet traveled to the place I am staying (much to my parents dismay)** and we set up the Xbox and handed off on Modern Warfare 2 and snaked on munchies till early the next morning.
My wife, Witchiebunny and her friend Gavyn also came by to pick up some stuff of hers that I had held onto for her and we got to see each other after nearly a year, which I was glad for even though it's still somewhat bittersweet.
So all together, it was a interesting, but fun weekend! So while I'm waiting for my muscles to forgive me, I'm hopeful that we can have more weekends like that in the future.
Here's to Furries! >toasts<

A Shot of .45 in my Expresso Please
General | Posted 16 years agoJust read an AOL news report about "Starbucks" decision to allow unloaded open-carry of firearms in their San Fransisco stores.
Up until now I hadn't heard that "Starbucks" had become a battleground for gun-control issues, and it seems somewhat absurd to me that activists on either side would choose as middling a place as a trendy coffee shop to fight over such a thing.
But apparently, Bay area residents are quite displeased that a local pro-gun group has been using Starbucks as a meeting ground to plan events (such as picking up trash at Baker Beach in Presidio National Park). They've been pressuring Starbucks to ban all guns from their stores saying that the sight of gun carrying people is "unsettling". Current law allows unloaded open-carry.
Quote from the article:
"Tell Starbucks: Espresso Shots, Not Gunshots," the group (the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence) says on its Web site. "The practice of packing heat in places like Starbucks is intimidating and could be potentially dangerous to our families and communities -- and it must be stopped."
My own opinion in this case is that state law prevails. Naturally I'm sympathetic to gun owners and I would like to see all states allow responsible owners to carry if they choose.
To me, the BCPGV's argument that gun carrying individuals at Starbucks could be "potentially dangerous to our families and communities" is an empty, almost slanderous piece of fear-mongering.
As further argument for their case, the BCPGV wrote a letter to Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz reminding him of a shooting that took place in a Starbucks outlet in 1997.
It's true that firearms have the potential for misuse, but insinuating that gun-carrying individuals sitting at a Starbucks sipping coffee might suddenly explode into violence is not only absurd, but to my mind, terribly naive.
The right to bear arms is not only a part of the constitution of this country, but also, I personally believe, a part of every human beings natural right to defend themselves.
If there had been an armed man sitting inside that Starbucks in 1997, or the possibility of one, those criminals may have thought twice before trying to rob the place.
I really only post this because I found the BCPGV's arguments to be asinine. I don't want to become the next J. Naylor or Ron Schmeits, but I do enjoy my collection of vintage rifles and feel that there is nothing wrong with allowing responsible citizens to openly carry their firearms.
I don't consider myself a hardcore conservative, or a bleeding-heart liberal, and I don't let political affiliations or dogma tell me what should be right or wrong - I follow my own conscience.

Prints Now for Sale!
General | Posted 16 years agoI've been meaning to do this for a while, and I finally put procrastination aside and I'm opening up my gallery to prints at the introductory price of $5 for any pic in my gallery. Some restrictions may apply*
Simply pick out an image you'd like to have, drop the money in my PayPal (nonPayPal users can send either a money order or some other appropriate transfer) I'll print it out via my Canon MP250 on high quality photo paper and send it on it's way via the post office.
Purchasers outside of the United States may be requested to send along an extra $1 to cover the additional shipping.
This is a trail run to see if there is any demand for prints of my work, and if so, what pictures are especially popular. Prices may go up depending on demand and/or circumstance, so if there's anything you want to get for cheap, act fast!
D.O.P.R
*Naturally, this doesn't include pics that show characters owned by other people unless permission is given beforehand. The only exception is if it is intended as a gift to that person.
And in all things, I am willing to negotiate. If you have a question, or a mitigating circumstance, let me know and I'll probably work with you.

Walking With Dinosaurs
General | Posted 16 years agoI finally got to enjoy one of my Christmas presents today (18th). Why the long wait? Well, it wasn't a standard gift; this one had a certain time constraint.
Two very generous, and very perceptive friends of mine bought me a ticket to see the BBC live production of "Walking With Dinosaurs", a partly animatronic, partly puppetry, all prehistorically awe-inspiring show which chose to grace the Tucson Convention Center for the next several days.
I think every child goes through that "Dinosaur Phase", where every lizard is a Tyrannosaurus Rex and the floor is littered by little plastic Dinos just waiting to be stepped on.
But some of us...we never grow out of it.
I could go into great depth about how much I was awed and/or moved (when the Brachiosaurs nuzzled one another, I shed a tear), but rather then bore you with a gob of gushy text, or make myself sound like a blithering fanboy (whether I am one or not), I will simply say that it is the best show I have ever been to.
Anyone with a love for Dinosaurs MUST see this show. It may be the closest we will ever come in our lifetimes to interacting with Dinosaurs.

Keeping Up with the Times
General | Posted 16 years agoTitle has almost nothing to do with this journal.
Hung out with some friends on the other side of town and did horrible things to my body (dear lord, Death Coffee!) but overall had a fun time hanging out with folks that I don't often get to see.
The job front is still abysmal, but I've actually gotten in for a few interviews again which is a hopeful sign.
Taxes have been done and I'm actually getting something back (which will be useful).
But the real reason for this journal:

Back from FC
General | Posted 16 years agoPhew! FC was a blast! I never really manage to do terribly well at writing con reports, but I did have a great time and I would like to thank the Tucson Mob (who made the trip possible): Don't worry, you'll get the money - I swear! >cower<
The Bad Dragon crew for being great friends and honorable hosts: I love you guys!
Skadjer, Syrinoth, and the others who let me crash in their room: You're some of the greatest Drakes I know.
And everyone else who made the con so special - from staff to attendees. Thanks guys!

General | Posted 16 years agoThanks to an open seat, the generosity of the Tucson Mob, and my own restless need to see these strange venues called "California" and "FC", I ahve managed to get myself a ride up to the con.
So...looks like I'll be going to FC after all. Wow! Last-minute plans for the win!

Music and Art
General | Posted 16 years agoI've kind of gotten out of the habit (not that I did it enough to make it a habit), but over the last week or so I've been meaning to journal about some of the music I'm listening too. Generally I like having it as an endcap to whatever else I'm writing about, but I haven't really been doing that.
Also, if I can get myself to remember, I'd like to start pointing out artists that I'm watching who I feel deserve a shout-out. Artists like
NiveK_Rayne
The Bat (Chiroptera) branch of the fandom is fairly small (especially compared to canids and even Dragons), but apparently fairly loyal, and NiveK draws some pretty wicked bats, as well as other characters and she deserves a look:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3295712
As for songs that have been getting a lot of play on my iPod lately, here are some top contenders:
"Counting Blue Cars" by Dishwalla from the Pet your Friends album.
A song I heard on the radio a while back, looked up via the lyrics and downloaded.
It's fun to sing along to, and somewhat poignant.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Clxtg2pFTQM
"Hungry Like a Wolf" by Duran Duran. Perhaps the only Duran Duran song I can stand to listen too.
I remember watching the music video for this on MTV back when it was still "Music Television". Whenever this comes up on my iPod I have to concentrate or else I start singing along with it. ^.=.^
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJRCE6e2xIg
The Theme from the original Max Payne by Kaertsy Hatakka and Kimmo Kajasto (sic)
Still one of my favorite games, and undoubtedly the dark and noir-style music which fit the game so well is a part of that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRuReVCFOY0
"Path of the Borealis" remix by DJ Dain (?)
A stunning atmospheric remix of a song from the Half-Life 2 game soundtrack. The actual origin of this track is a bit convoluted, but from what I've heard it's actually a remix done by DJ Dain and posted onto the HL2 forums where it then was leaked to YouTube and listed as being from the HL2 beta. Whatever it's origins, it's a fantastic track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWnBpQyeGBM
The TV Show by Manabe Takayuki
If you missed the video when it was Link of the Day, then allow me to give you a second chance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ9YtJC-Kd8
Epic. I still can't get this track off my "Most Listened To" list...
Enjoy!

Helping Out
General | Posted 16 years ago2010 has been a heck of a year so far! 2009 was a year full of change, and 2010 is shaping up to put those changes to the test!
It's looking like I'll have a full-time job by the end of next month, I've been doing pretty good at my part-time job, my car is oiled and running smooth and I've got all but one bill fully paid off!
That's all the good news. The bad news is that as I'm sure you've all heard (unless you're an incurable hermit) there are as many as 500,000 people (some estimates are much higher) in Haiti who have been killed in the recent earthquake.
Whether you are going to the mall for a quick bite of pizza here in America, or shopping for a new jacket in Great Britain, or a new cell phone in Finland, chances are fairly good that if you can read this here you've got it a lot better then most of them do right now.
So no matter where you are, appreciate the luck that's put you in possession of the things you have right now. And if you can, make a donation to "The Red Cross", or "Doctors Without Boarders", or if you don't have a lot of money, go to a local blood drive an donate. I have an appointment to do just that, and I'm going to see what I have available to donate as far as clothes.
Haiti is a long way away for most people, but the human tragedy should be very near to all of us. If it was your country, or on your block, or your neighbors/family/friends, you would hope that someone somewhere would care enough to do something.
Bad things happen, but they're made worse when people just sit by and do nothing. So now's our chance to do something.

Clash of the Titans
General | Posted 16 years agoJust saw the trailer for the remake of "Clash of the Titans", a movie that my parents and I use to watch all the time when I was growing up.
I linked to it off of CNN where it was listed as the trailer that "proves the remake will blow it (the original) out of the water". After watching for myself, I'm not convinced. I was disappointed by a lot of what I saw, but overall I feel it's a movie I might actually go see (and for me, that's a big deal).
But as for it being "better" then the original? I don't think that a proper comparison could really be made.
The original 1981(?) "Clash of the Titans" is a classic, make no mistake. But it has little to do with modern "high-action", "epic-adventure" movies like "Avatar" or "Transformers", which rely heavily on CGI no-stop explosions/eyecandy.
That's not to say the 1981 version was highbrow, or didn't bank on it's own special effects (Ray Harryhausen being a demigod himself), but that each set of movies is pandering to a different audience.
A movie like the 1981 "Clash" wouldn't have been successful in today's movie market, and likewise, a movie like "Transformers" likely wouldn't have been well received either.
And it seemed plain to me that just like with the recent "Star Trek" movie, they're not trying to remake the original, or make an homage to it - they're just taking the name and setup and reinventing an entirely new experience - one that will draw in a certain amount of guarenteed nostalgic fans, yet still satisfy today's ADHD audiences.
Which is also why I probably won't like the new "Clash". Heck, true to my Movie-Nazi nature, I already don't like it.
But I'd still like to see it.

I'll be checking back on this with cautious hope.
I haven't been following the fight terribly closely, but if the courts deny equal marriage to gay Americans again I would have lost yet another chunk of faith in the American system.

Helping Others
General | Posted 16 years agoI received a response to my last journal, reminding me that there are people out there who didn't have a home to spend Christmas at, or many gifts to open, good or bad.
While it can be fun to joke about the, strange, off-beat, or down-right awful gifts we get, at least we got something.
There are some folks out there who spent their Christmas sifting through the ashes of their former life.
The news article explaining the fire is here:
http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/local&id=7179977
From what I hear, both cats have been confirmed dead, but either way, these people could use the support of the fandom, or anyone else who is willing to help.
The support movement is being handled through

Moved Over
General | Posted 16 years agoWell, finally got set up in my new space. Most of my stuff went either into storage, or given away (although I still seem to have a butt-load of stuff), but I've got all my preciousess here...mostly in boxes...
It's going to be another tough adjustment, but I've been having to undergo a lot of those all this year, and this certainly isn't the worst of them.
Either way, I seem to have missed Christmas. I'm not really a huge Christmas person, but I usually get touched by the "Xmas Spirit" at least once each year, even if it's only on the morning itself. But this year it seems to have totally passed me by. Undoubtedly due at least in part by the urgent need to move my possessions, and all the hassle that goes along with it.
I'm kind of bummed, but all other things considered, I think I had a pretty good Xmas even without "the spirit of Christmas living through me".
I didn't get quite what I wanted this year (a replacement to my "Ring of Barahir", which has been missing for nearly a year), but I did get something I very much wanted - "The Children of Hurin" - which is one of the last Tolkien books I don't already have.
My other gifts seemed somewhat...symbolic... A new dress shirt so I can "look good during interviews" and, most mysteriously, superman pajamas...
My first reaction upon opening the package was bewilderment. I looked to my mother who asked what it was (she of course already knew) and I showed it to her. She "oooo"ed in mock delight, but the look on my face must have been enough to tell her that I was less then thrilled.
"Do you like it?"
I hesitated.
"Well..." I struggled for a way to break it to her "I never was a big fan of superman..."
I'm still completely mystified as to how she got the idea that superman PJs would make a great gift for me. I generally dislike most Marvel/DC superheroes and don't watch the movies, or even talk about them. Perhaps it was a suggestion gone wrong?
In any case, I now have a decent dress shirt (which I will make good use of), a copy of the new Tolkien book (definitely going to be made use of), and a new set of PJs (I'll still be using my robe).

Court Date
General | Posted 16 years agoI had been expecting it for a while, but nevertheless, getting served with paperwork outlining my court date for eviction isn't something I was looking forward too.
It may not be what I want, but it's just another hurdle in hopefully getting myself back on track.
I've been talking with some local people and I have folks willing to help me store some of my stuff, and my parents already have a room in the the back of their place where I can sleep. Unfortunately that room is being used for storage, so very little of my own stuff will be able to fit in there aside from maybe a couch and sleeping bag.
It also is painted a vivid blue and covered with Care Bears. The previous owners intended it to be their kid's room, but figured that the house itself was too small for the family they wanted and moved out.
Nevertheless, it's a place to stay, and as I've said before, I need a place to go where I can safely stay without incurring more bills or debt. That way all the money I make can go into paying off the past due items I have now (including fees and court costs from the eviction). Once I get all that done, I can safely try starting my life over.
---
The song for the moment is Mika's "Happy Ending", which is somewhat appropriate to me right now, but exceptionally painful.

My Life According to Led Zeppelin
General | Posted 16 years agoYes, this one was just too interesting for me to pass up. That, and the moment I saw it, I knew I had to use a few Zeppelin songs.
Using only song names from ONE ARTIST, cleverly answer these questions. Try not to repeat a song title. It's a lot harder than you think! Repost as "my life according to (band name)" (STOLEN FROM

• Pick your Artist:
Led Zeppelin
• Are you a male or female?
Black Country Woman (uh…no)
• Describe yourself:

• How do you feel:
Dazed and Confused
• Describe where you currently live:
Houses of the Holy
• If you could go anywhere, where would you go:

• Your favorite form of transportation:
The Ocean
• What did you get on your last Birthday?
Whole Lotta Love
• Your best friend is:

• Your last relationship:
Ten Years Gone
• Your fear:
No Quarter
• What is the best advice you have to give:

Updates on Moving and in General
General | Posted 16 years agoSadly, it looks like I'm going to be moving again. I've been in the market for a roommate, but with things as they are, they would be paying pretty much all the expenses of the household until I can find a secure position, and since the reason they would likely be looking for roommate is to cut costs, that wouldn't really work out.
More then likely I'll be back with my folks. That's not an attractive prospect, and it would involve putting nearly all of my possessions into storage for a while, but at least I have family to go to, which means a place to sleep, eat and be relatively comfortable until this mess can get sorted out.
More importantly, I need to get out of this system for a while. Working temp jobs is good, but it doesn't pay very well, nor is is very reliable. I have unpaid bills stacking up and have only been able to keep a lot of disconnects at bay through the help and generosity of friends (you all have my thanks), but for this whole year I've been steadily sliding into a hole, and without decent pay and a steady job, it's impossible to dig back out. So by taking myself out of the system for a while, I can spend all my money in paying off debts rather then simply taking the top off the old ones.
It's pretty sucky, especially with how sucky things have already been, but there's nothing else for it really, and in the end, it's probably for the best. It lets me clean the slate so to speak and get a fresher start.
I might even forgo looking for work and instead look into getting a degree. It's not something I could afford while working, but if I were at home, I wouldn't have to worry about rent, electric, cable, etc and could concentrate solely on school. But even then, I have to be careful since some of the schools here cost $70,000 for a four year, and that's out of my range even without any other expenses.
Aside from that, things here have been fluctuating the way they have been all year. The local Furs have been tremendously supportive and helpful in ways that I don't think even they realize, which offsets some of the negative things that have sprung up from time to time. Because even at the risk of being over-dramatic, my life kind of sucks right now. That's not to say I have it worse then others (the Lord knows, I have it better then a lot of other people), but just that I've been pretty down on luck lately and it takes a toll.
And keeping with my new tradition, I'll leave you all with some music tracks that I've been rocking out too quite a bit lately:
First up is a Sonic 2 remix that I was shown on OCremix.org. It's a really classy tune that I've been playing over and over for the last week or so. It's a real it:
http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01327/
And here's a song from the TV cult classic "The Prisoner" that I fell in love with the first time I heard it on the show. At the time, all I had was a duel-cassette deck, so I ran AV from the TV to the deck and straight recorded the audio from the episode onto tape, then used the other deck to mix the dialogue out and splice it together as best I could. Years later, I finally discover that the complete soundtrack to "The Prisoner" was released and included that very song.
I've had it on repeat ever since.

Thanksgiving
General | Posted 16 years agoIt's not quite Thanksgiving in my local yet, but I figured that while I was in a mood to say so, I'd wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
Even if you are not American (for whom the Thanksgiving season is a national remembrance), everyone around the world can take a moment to pause and be thankful for all that we have.
Especially in times of loss, or stress, it's important not to lose sight of the good things we have that are easily taken for granted.
If that seems hard, try and start small. We can still breathe (at least for now). You're not dead, even if it seems at times you would be better off that way. Most people have at least one family member or friend that is close to them. Be thankful for them!
So maybe it would be a good idea to spend your Thanksgiving actually giving thanks. Say "Thank you" to that person who helped you out. Give a pat on the back to that friend who has stuck with you all this time, or give an appreciative hug to the parent, grandparent, cousin, aunt, or nephew that helped raise you.
In that vein, I would like to thank all of you - watchers, lurkers and commenters for all the encouragement you've given to me since I joined FA.
Thank you commissioners and requesters for giving me unique challenges and inspirations (and sometimes money).
Thank you to all my friends who are reading this. Your support during troubled times has done more for me in recent months then I can express, and makes this Thanksgiving truly thankful.
I would also like to thank my wife for the many happy memories we've had together.
So go ahead - find someone in your life that you think deserves a thank you, and make sure you let them know how much you appreciate what they've done.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Sincerely,
D.O.P.R

$5 Sketch Commissions
General | Posted 16 years agoThe $5 sketch commissions are still open, although I think I'll try to keep the amount of them I have going limited, since I've kind of proven myself to be less then stellar as far as the turnaround on them goes.
I've got one I'll be uploading here in a moment (sorry for the wait DD), but if there is anyone else who asked for one and hasn't received an update on it yet, let me know and I'll expedite my process (i.e. light a fire under my own ass).

At least for the time being, I have some limited connectivity. But it's like being on dialup again...
But at least that's one hurdle overcome. Now let's see if that interview paid off in a job.

Jobs are good...and stuff
General | Posted 16 years agoWell, I kind of lied...but I didn't mean it.
I didn't get a call from the employment people on Monday, so I called them and found out that the place only took three out of the five applications, and mine was number four.
But I had some temp work today, and will have some more tommorrow, as well as an interview. If I get that job, it will be in a machine shop.
I'd be working Fridays to Sundays, thirteen hours a day. Yes, 13 hours a day. 5pm to approx 6:30am. But it would be $9 to $11 an hour with four days a week off.
We'll see how that goes.
I also forget my flash drive again. Boy, what happened to my memory?
I've priced wireless cards and I found one that was made for my setup and is only $40. I might get it with the money I made today so that I can at least get some limited connectivity. Then maybe I start getting back on AIM and Steam and the like. Until then, my email and FA are still open and checkable, so if anyone wants to reach me, that's the way.

'nother Update
General | Posted 16 years agoShould be starting my new job tomorrow. It's only for a month to six months, but it's regular, honest work, and thankfully welcomed.
With my first paycheck, I may try and see about getting a cheap wireless card so that I can pic up on the WiFi in my area and get some limited access back.
I'm sure you all miss me...
>crickets<
...or not.
I keep forgetting to bring my flash drive with me, so those two that are still waiting for sketch comissions, keep faith!
Take care everyone!
