Sy Sable Update
Posted a year agoAccording to author Paul Kidd, Mark "Sy Sable" Merlino died at 2:00 AM PST this morning at his home in Los Angeles CA. He was one of the founders of the Furry fandom and a true gentleman. He is survived by his husband, Rod "Vinson Mink" O'Riley.
The fandom contributed to his GoFundMe page to help pay for Mark's medical expenses. They might need a little more now to pay for his funeral. https://gofund.me/9f0e2a09
Whatever comes after this life, may it be kind to anthro sables.

Vinson is trying to raise some money to cover their various medical bills. They need $52,000. So far they've gotten $50,000; just $2K to go. Please consider helping this original Furry legend.
Here is Mark's FA page. -- https://www.furaffinity.net/user/sysable/
If you'd like to just contribute, Mark's GoFundMe account is https://gofund.me/9f0e2a09 You'll find more details there.
And remember, if you'd like to help, but can't contribute right now, a signal boost is usually helpful, too. You may copy-pasta this journal, the URL links should still work, but you might need to re-make the personal links.
BTW, I heard about the situation from Tantroo, here.
I watch sysable myself.

Are You Eating Horse Paste?
Posted 2 years agoHorse paste is an apple flavoured treatment for gut parasites. It is meant for horses and other large farm animals, but is much too strong for humans. Since the start of the CoViD-19 pandemic, it has also been used to describe conspiracy theories. Here's why.
In the late eighteenth to early twentieth centuries, there were travelling medicine shows. Sales wagons staffed by flimflam men would travel from town to town, setting up in the local square and advertising patent medicines. The wagon operators made extravagant claims of the curative powers of their concoctions. Perhaps the most famous was Clark Stanley's Snake Oil Liniment. The labels on "Mr. Stanley's" bottles advised that their contents could cure rheumatism, neuralgia, sciatica, lame back, lumbago, tooth ache, sore throat, frost bite, chill blains and et cetera. (At least it had the decency to say the stuff was for external use.)
Of course, there were no snake derived ingredients in the bottles. The contents could be anything from mineral oil suffused with cocaine, opium, amphetamines, alcohol, household herbs and spices or even plain, unfiltered water. What mattered were the salesmanship skills of the flimflam men. They had only to convince the foolish townsfolk that the pricey "snake oil" could fix their medical issues. Mere placebo effect would keep them convinced until it became obvious that the stuff was worthless and they'd been tricked. By that time the wagons, their dishonest staff and the townsfolk's money were long gone. If the snake oil salesman was wise, he never went to the same town twice.
This is how "snake oil" became a metaphor for health care fraud, deceptive marketing, (especially for patent medicines), or other kinds of scams. Likewise, by "snake oil salesman" we mean someone who sells or promotes such fraud.
But during the recent SARS COV 2 pandemic, a special kind of snake oil became apparent. Most people tried to follow the advice of doctors, scientists and others who had actually trained in medicine and knew what they were talking about. But a loud few saw this advice instead as an infringement on their autonomy, their self-control. This vocal minority did everything in their power to spread doubt about what the doctors were saying. They advanced alternative explanations for the sickness and deaths the world was seeing. These counter-explanations were all conspiracy theories straight out of "The X Files." Mostly they featured government conspiracies to take control of democracy, (which is what a government is for in the first place), or "the deep state" and secret societies, (a dog whistle for the Jews), trying to wipe out The People, (for which read Whites.) There were other elements as well; covid vaccines became the focus of the old anti-vaccine movement, (started by Andrew Wakefield and his fraudulent Lancet article in 1998), which also took-in mask-wearing as an "assault on freedom."
When by early 2021 it became impossible to deny that something was making a lot of people very sick, the loud few still could not admit that they'd been wrong. Instead they blamed covid vaccines and 5G cellular towers for spreading poison. Their solution was ivermectin, an anti-parasitic medicine that was tried as a covid treatment and found ineffective. The loud few concluded that, if doctors had tried ivermectin but stopped using it, then it must be the magic cure either for covid or for vaccines and the government was keeping it a secret. To you and I this makes absolutely no sense at all. But in the topsy-turvy world of the loud few, it couldn't be more obvious. But ivermectin is a prescription drug. To get it, you have to prove to a doctor that you have parasites in your guts. The loud few needed an unrestricted source of the stuff.
Enter horse paste. There are several brands of horse dewormer sold online and at farming and horse goods stores. It even has a pleasant apple flavour. As word spread online of its power to stand between death and those guilty of being vaccinated, vendors became wary of new customers. Farming goods stores started asking for pictures of the horses of people who'd never had one before, especially if they'd never set foot in the store before either. But by hook or by crook, the loud few got their secret miracle drug. Only they got it at a strength meant for an animal much larger and heavier than even the fattest conspiracy nut. There are pictures in places on the eternal web of people with the linings of their intestines hanging out who "didn't even know they'd had worms!"
And this is how "horse paste" came to be a metaphor for snake oil that you wish on yourself. It can also mean a conspiracy theory, usually based on the covid pandemic, but sometimes just a particularly stupid one.

Cat Nirvana Day
Posted 2 years agoYOu might recall a year or so ago that I asked you all to pay attention to a beautiful black cat names Buddha who had cancer and whose human family needed some financial help to keep him alive. They opted to have him treated by an alternative animal healer and Buddha did pretty well in their care. He lived for fourteen months with cancer to the age of thirteen years, (pretty good for a domestic cat.)
Last Friday, (June 23rd), Buddha finally left this world with all its sorrow and stress. He spent a peaceful day in his household's catio and in the lap of his favourite human, Chase. May he live forever in the place where the ceaseless winds of change do not blow and he can be a contented kitty forever.
Here is Chase's announcement. -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nj2vzUu9LOM
Thank you to everyone who helped.

I'm sure you all remember our comrade and considered voice, Tony "Dogbomb" Barrett, It has not yet been four years since he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS, (sometimes known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.) We remember how he fought it. In the end, he opted to end his life on his own terms rather than let a mere disease destroy him. Since then, research into ALS has been a cause among us.
dogbomb
On April 15th, 2023, there will be a walk in the city of Raleigh to raise money for research into ALS. The Furry community of North Carolina intend to participate in this walk, but they want more. This year, they want to sponsor the walk. They want to show the world how generous and kind is the Furry fandom. Of course, they want to honour Dogbomb, too. But more importantly, they... well, Uncle Kage... wants to be able to look all the corporate sponsors in their metaphorical faces and say, "Is that all you've got?"
As I write this, Team Dogbomb has raised $770US. They want to put at least $2,500 together by April.
Please click this link to hear Uncle Kage's own words on the subject.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ereB-MdAFGY
Then click on this link and chip in what you can.

Perhaps you can't donate right now. I know that inflation is hitting hard on all of us. Maybe charity is a luxury that you can't afford, even for a tax write-off. Some of us have spare cash, so you can still help by spreading the news as far as you can. (I hereby grant blanket permission to link to or copy-and-paste this journal.)

Thank you all for your kind attention.

The Holidays 2022 to 2023
Posted 3 years agoIn the past few years, some Protestant groups have tried to argue against referring to the Christmas season as “The Holidays” because they feel that it takes away from the Holy status of Christmas and of Christ. What they fail to understand is that “The Holidays” does not refer only to Protestant Christmas. There are, in fact, quite a few holy days (weeks, etc) during this time. Not all of them are Protestant, or even Christian.
Here is my list of holidays and important occasions for the 2022 Holiday Season. It includes events that happen between Advent Sunday, (the beginning of the traditional lead up to Christmas), through Christmas Season, (the twelve days beginning Christmas Day and ending on January 5th or “Twelfth Night”). until Epiphany, (the season which follows Christmas.) Use it to (figuratively) arm yourselves.
(NB. This version of the list includes some specifically Furry or animal-related events that are mostly of interest to us. When dealing with non-Furs, you might want to show them this version, which is partly "sanitized.")

Mrs Otterton - Parody Lyics

chirp-a chirp-a chirp-a chirp-a chirp chirp chirp-a chirp
squeak-a squeak-a squeak-a squeak squeak squeak
chirp-a chirp-a chirp-a chirp-a squeak-a chirp chirp chirp
CHORUS And here’s to you Mrs Otterton
You’re a Mom that we’d all like to know
Whoa, whoa, whoa
God bless you please Mrs Otterton
Furries know that otters love to play
Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
In Disney’s Zootopia there’s one scene where you spoke
And another scene where you did not
You were loved for being cute and your sweet attitude
Furries mostly like to draw you in the nude
(Chorus) And here’s to you Mrs Otterton
Emmitt loves you most as you well know...
Emmitt is a good and loving father to your pups
And a good provider with his flower shop
Why then would you fool around and risk the man you’ve got
Then again, long as he never knows, why not?
(Chorus) Coo coo ca-choo Mrs Otterton
You’re a mom that we’d all like to know...
Lieing on the sofa on a Wednesday after lunch
Demonstrating “hump day” to some kid
Laugh about it, cry about it
Clean up when you’re done
Now that you have done it, was it fun?
(Alt Chorus) Where have you gone Emmitt Ottterton
There’s something you really otter know
Whoa whoa whoa
What’s that you say Mrs. Otterton
Emmitt is as big a cheat as you
Boo hoo hoo
Boo hoo hoo
Parody Lyrics © 2022 Allan “D’Otter” Burrows
to the tune of “Mrs, Robinson” by Paul Simon, © Universal Music Publishing Group
EDIT
- "Furries draw you close as possible to nude" becomes "Furries mostly like to draw you in the nude"
...because in most (but not all) images I see of her, she's naked!
- "Are you really certain that you’ve won?" becomes "Now that you have done it, was it fun?"
...otters aren't really competitive. by nature. Sure they play chase me and wrestling, but it doesn't change their social status or anything. I doubt they'd even keep score in any games. If Mrs O cheated on Emmitt, she'd do it for fun, not to be better than him.
- changed the spacing in the final chorus to make it neater (It didn't work.)
- NB. I have seen pictures of Emmitt cheating on Mrs. O.

...otters aren't really competitive.

A Question
Posted 3 years agoIt's been a while since I've heard any mention of Second Life. I was never on it. (I didn't have a powerful enough computer and besides, what I heard made it sound like troll central.) It used to be popular among Furries. Is Second Life still relevant at all?
Also, here's an update from my last journal. Sherbet of Lylasia -- yes, that Sherbet -- had to have his other cat, Smokey put to sleep a few days ago. He and his family miss Smokey very much. Meanwhile, the vets were getting Galileo ready for an operation to remove that kidney stone from his bladder. Galileo's GoFundMe is up to $2,509 as I write, but they need $7,000 for him to get well. Please consider helping this sweety kitty.

Please Help This Dragon Bunny Deer Thing
Posted 3 years agoSherbet of Lylasia has an immediate vet bill. His cat, Galileo, has a stone in his bladder that was blocking his urethra. The vet managed to push it free so that Galileo could go to the cat box, but there's a danger that it could shift back. If that happens, he could die. Galileo is on a special diet that might dissolve the stone enough for it to pass. Of course, that's costing Sherbet money and of course, the cat doesn't like it. Galileo should really have surgery to remove the stone.
Sherbet needs US$7,000. Please consider helping this Furry icon. Even a few bucks would help.

More Buddha News
Posted 3 years agoFor those who remember my last update and wonder what happened, Buddha, the black cat has cancer. It has spread to his lymph nodes and it looks bad for him. Chase is considering radiation therapy for him to give him a little longer, as of last Friday (3rd) she hadn't decided. Buddha is a beauty and a sweety, losing him will be hard. Having a little extra cash will help, as radiation is expensive. (What isn't expensive these days?)

The Holidays 2021 to 2022
Posted 4 years agoTL:DR ...or you can read it more comfortably on my WordPress site!
https://dotter8.wordpress.com/2021/.....-2021-to-2022/
In the past few years, some Protestant groups have tried to argue against referring to the Christmas season as "The Holidays." They feel that it takes away from the Holy status of Christmas and of Christ. (It also reduces their dominance and control of society, especially regarding what is "normal.”) They fail to understand (or perhaps understand too well) that "The Holidays" does not mean Christmas alone. There are, in fact, quite a few holy days and other occasions during this time. Not all of them are Christian.
Here is my list of holy days and important occasions for 2021. It includes events that happen between Advent Sunday, through Christmas Season, until Epiphany. I did my best, but this really should be considered only a partial list. I should also note that some of these are Canadian-only events.

bother anybody be seen again.
things simian
For Christians, it's a little more involved, usually part of Advent. It is often confused with Christmas, which Yule both parallels and overlaps. Originally it was a secular version of Pagan Yule mixed with Roman Saturnalia, but Christian influences crept into it. Now it's just a mess. Christians usually overlook it in favour of Christmas.
(You might remember that Good King Wenceslas looked out on the Feast of Stephen, but that's another story. BTW, Wenceslas was the Duke of Bohemia; He was crowned king posthumously.)
The meaning of Boxing Day has been lost to history. Jonathan Swift wrote in his letters about the servants and apprentices of trades-masters and merchants going door-to-door with boxes collecting tips for service from those wealthy enough to give them. His letters might be the only evidence of what this Day means.
There are other theories as to its origins. Some suggest that "Boxing" refers to prize fights, but there is evidence to the contrary. Other explanations include: that this was the Day when churches opened their Poor Boxes and distributed the contents; that Christmas visitors were packed-off home on this Day; or that masters and servants swapped roles for the Day. There is no evidence for any of these. Some say that households took down Christmas decorations this Day, but the tradition was to do that on Twelfth Night. More promising is the idea that Boxing Day was the day to open Christmas gifts. Over the years, people opened gifts on St Nicholas Day, New Year's Day and several other days, so Boxing Day was as likely as any.
But again, nobody knows for sure anymore.
NB. Z Day is not the same as Zeitgeist Day. That's some time around March.

EDIT
- List entries for December 23rd and 24th were somehow omitted; replaced them
- in the glossary entry for Krampusnacht, I indicated where "bother anybody" should have been semi-cancelled, but didn't actually do it; fixed.
- I think I got everything this time.

For Pagans, Yule (aka Sol Invictus) is a minor holy day marking the beginning of winter and the slow return of daylight. Among Odinists, it's called the Wild Hunt. For Christians, it's a little more involved, usually part of Advent. It is often confused with Christmas, which Yule both parallels and overlaps. Originally it was a secular version of Pagan Yule mixed with Roman Saturnalia, but Christian influences crept into it. Now it's just a mess. Christians usually overlook it in favour of Christmas.

the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, was born on December 25th in 1971, to Margaret Trudeau and then-Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau. (Justin's brother, Sasha, was also born on December 25th in 1973.)Feast of St Stephen/Stephen's Day (Christian):
Stephen was the first Christian martyr. A troop of Roman guards was searching for him to arrest him for promoting Christianity. He hid in some bushes, but a chattering wren gave him away. Because He was born on December 26th, the Day after Christmas is sometimes called Stephen's Day.(You might remember that Good King Wenceslas looked out on the Feast of Stephen, but that's another story. BTW, Wenceslas was the Duke of Bohemia; He was crowned king posthumously.)
Wren Day (Celtic Catholics/Irish Diaspora):
On St Stephen's Day, Irish Catholic boys go about collecting pennies "to bury the wren." They used to go out in the morning to avenge St Stephen by finding and killing a wren. These days a plastic wren or a doll suffices. The tradition is dying out, but you might still hear about it in places.Zarathosht Diso/Zartosht No-Diso (Zoroastrianism):

December 26th, unless it falls on a Sunday, in which case it is December 27th in the British Commonwealth of Nations; in other parts of the world, it could still be on Sunday 26th.) In the Province of Ontario and for Federal Employees, it is a Statutory Holiday.
Visit the Zoo Day:
Nobody seems to know how or by who this occasion was founded. It appears to involve zoos justifying their existence and encouraging people to bring their families to their local zoos.Holy Innocents (Christian):
commemoration of the Massacre of the Innocents. The Gospel of Matthew, chapter 2, verses 16 to 18, describes how the Magi had told King Herod that a king would be born to the Jews in Bethlehem. Herod ordered his men to kill all the boys in Bethlehem who were two years old or younger. Christians remember the occasion on this Day.Holy Family:
a celebration of Mary, Joseph and Jesus as a family, observed by Catholics, Anglicans and LutheransNew Year's Eve:
We all know what this is!Watch Night Service:

The author of The Hobbit, the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and many lesser-known books was born on January 3rd, 1892.World Braille Day:
a celebration of the typeface which is readable by the visually impairedTwelfth Night (trad.):
January 5th is the twelfth and last day of the Christmas season. Households put away Christmas decorations. Churches prepare for the Epiphany season, which starts the next day. Some families hold small dinner parties for friends. Dessert is a King's Cake, with figures of a king and a queen baked into them, as well as a coin. Whoever gets the king is the king of the party and directs the entertainment for the evening. The queen of the party dances with the king and organizes the women where needed. Whoever gets the coin holds the Twelfth Night party next year.Hayao Miyazaki’s Birfday:
He was born in 1941. Miyazaki is an artist and animator. He co-founded Studio Ghibli (with Toshio Suzuki, Isao Takahata, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma.) - List entries for December 23rd and 24th were somehow omitted; replaced them
- in the glossary entry for Krampusnacht, I indicated where "bother anybody" should have been semi-cancelled, but didn't actually do it; fixed.
- I think I got everything this time.

Putting The Furry In The Furrinalia
Posted 4 years agoFor images of Furrina, please see my WordPress article. https://dotter8.wordpress.com/2021/.....he-furrinalia/
The ancient Romans had a minor goddess named Furrina. The word derives from the Latin for "bubbling" or "gushing" and she was a goddess of springs, wells, and streams. She had a sacred grove where an artesian well gushed into a spring. She had a holy day called the Furrinalia. Again, little is still known about how it was celebrated, but it was held in the middle of the "dog days," (the hottest part of summer), so it probably had to do with warding off drought. She even had a cult of Her own, but as a minor deity, it didn't swing much weight in Rome. Not much more than that is known about Her today. I believe that some modern Pagans use Her imagery in spells and meditations and such.
Well with a name like Furrina, of course the Furry fandom has to pay attention!
The Furrinalia has always been celebrated, (when it was celebrated), on July 25th, (a Sunday this year.) The Furry fandom doesn't have much by way of traditions, (even SF Fandom has more), so just generally Do Something Furry. Draw Furrina. Post an article or stpry or something on FA or SF or Telegram or wherever. Go fursuiting. Get together with local fans, have a party! (Not this year, though.) Whatever Furry means to you, do it on the Furrinalia.
I propose that Furrina's fursonna would be an otter, (said D'Otter), although any fresh-water, semi-aquatic animal would do. Maybe a beaver? I'd hesitate to give Her a fish-sonna, just because so many critters eat feesh. Consuming one's deity is kinda weird and I just don't think it would be wise to get into that. (No offence meant, Christians.)
She would be found in a random stream near its head waters. She would be friendly, generous, and gentle, (mostly.) She would accept nearly anyone as an acolyte, but reject those who refuse to do the same or who deliberately made trouble. ("You can't tolerate intolerance!") She would also be a teacher, showing the young and ignorant how to behave in public, how to be a friend.
Anyway, that’s my proposal. Let me know what you think!

Royal Birthday Wishes
Posted 4 years agoA point of interest for Victoria Day, (and an excuse to push "The Holidays" off my user page)
Her Royal Majesty, Queen Vitoria, Monarch of the United Kingdom and Empress of the British Empire, (on which the sun once never set), was born on May 24th, 1819. Her coronation took place on June 20th, 1837. She passed from this world on January 22nd, 1901. Rounded to no decimals, Victoria lived to the ripe, old age of eighty-two, having reigned for sixty-four years.
Victoria's great-great-granddaughter, Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, was born on April 21st, 1926. (However, Commonwealth citizens celebrate her birthday on the second Saturday in June, when the weather's nicer.) Her coronation took place on June 2nd, 1953. And of course, Her Majesty is still with us today. Rounded again to no decimal places, Elizabeth II has so far lived to be ninety-five and reigned over the United Kingdom and Commonwealth of Nations for sixty-eight years.
In conclusion, the current monarch of England has both out-lived and out-reigned Victoria, whose birthday we celebrate today. God Save The Queen!

The Holidays 2020 to 2021
Posted 5 years agoIn the past few years, some Protestant groups have tried to argue against referring to the Christmas season as “The Holidays” because they feel that it takes away from the Holy status of Christmas and of Christ. What they fail to understand is that “The Holidays” does not mean Christmas exclusively. There are, in fact, quite a few holy days during this time, not all of them Christian.
Here is my list of holidays and important occasions for the 2020 Holiday Season. It includes events that happen between Advent Sunday, (the beginning of the traditional lead up to Christmas), through Christmas Season, (the twelve days beginning Christmas Day and ending on January 5th or “Twelfth Night”).
