Do I Look Like A Smoker?
General | Posted 7 years agoNo, seriously.
The annual Toronto (Canada) Pride Parade happened last Sunday and I'm glad to say that our first Furry float, (Kerfluffle 7), was a big success. They didn't start until well back in the parade, but I'm glad I stayed and got lots of video and pictures of them, which I'll post later, after some... erh, post-production. Waiting wasn't bad, though, as there were lots of sexy floats and dancers and marchers and things to watch. I had a lot of fun... until It Started.
It started with a tap on my elbow. I looked around and saw this young guy, a short guy, glaring at me and flicking a curiously bent cigarette which he was holding up. The thing wasn't lit, so I immediately gathered that he wanted a light. Now I didn't much care for his impatient scowl or the way he didn't bother to speak. But the wisdom of his gesture quickly dawned on me; it was a parade, there were a crowd and a noise float nearby, we probably couldn't have heard each other anyway. As for his expression, it could have just been his rest face; my own is a bit off-putting if I don't think to smile. Well, I don't smoke, so I didn't have a light for him. Since he didn't speak to me, I didn't reply, I tried to gesture instead. Then I turned back to the parade, thinking no more of it.
That is until my nose began to hurt. No, I do not mean that something smelled rather unpleasant. I mean that something was making my nose feel very scratchy and uncomfortable. And my eyes. And the back of my throat. And there was also the smell of tobacco smoke; acrid, but tolerable if it wasn't also making every mucous membrane in my face itch, (as it always does.) I looked around for the source of the fumes. Sure enough, there was the same little guy. Somebody had given him a light and he was holding up his cigarette so that the smoke was blowing at me. Nor was he even close to finished being deliberately and actively rude with me... but that's not my point.
My point is that this wasn't the first time. He was by far the most annoying, drunken, little twerp to ever bug me for a cigarette or a light, most smokers are reasonably polite about it. But every so often, out of the blue, somebody will think I have what they need to relieve their nicotine withdrawal symptoms. I'm not a smoker! I don't have cigarettes and I don't have a lighter! Why does anybody think I do?
With this latest drunken twerp, it's gotten to the point that it's really bugging me!
Look, some of you here have met me IRL and some of those must be smokers themselves. Do I look like a smoker? Do I somehow act like a smoker? Am I accidentally doing the smoker's handshake or carrying something around, (other than tobacco), that smokers like to display?
I asked my brother, (an ex-smoker), about this. His best guess is that I carry my cellphone in my breast pocket and it looks like a pack of cigarettes. I keep my cell in a black plastic case. Is there a brand of cigarettes that come in a black pack? (FTM, is there a brand of cigarettes that come in a pack with a 3.5mm headphone jack? I've had smokers try to talk to me while I was listening to podcasts.) Where do you guys keep your cellphones?
Does anybody know of a way to show smokers that I am not one of them before they waste their time and mine asking me for something I ain't got? ...other than reacting adversely to my sinuses itching; apparently, they consider that rude.

A Little Opinion Piece on Rights
General | Posted 7 years agoI originally sent this as an email to a CBC radio news magazine show called Day 6. They had aired an article about the Supreme Court of Canada handing down a decision about a particularly contentious case, (which I summarize below.) Mainly I just wanted to get rid of the Otter Day post.
Warning: my opinions might be controversial.
I am writing today about the case of Trinity Western University's recently-thwarted attempt to force the law societies of British Columbia and Ontario to grant accreditation to students from their proposed law school equally with other law schools. As you know, Trinity Western wanted to impose a "covenant" on their law students. (I should mention that I am not familiar with the differences between a "covenant" and other forms of agreement.) This "covenant," among other things, would have required their law students, (and does require all of their students), to have no sex of any kind until they are married, to have sex only with the person they marry, and to marry only a person of the opposite physical gender from themselves, (the latter being the point.) This would have discriminated against LGBT persons by restricting them either from enrolling as law students at Trinity Western or from ever having sex. Because of this, the Law Societies of Ontario and BC decided that they would never give accreditation to Trinity Western's law school graduates. Recently, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld those Law Societies' decision. They acknowledged Trinity Western's right to exercise their religious beliefs by discriminating against LGBT persons. But they decided that it is "proportionate and reasonable" to limit that freedom, reasoning that the rights of LGBT persons to not be discriminated against must also be protected.
What I want to comment on is the contention between rights, and between the people who own them, both in this case and in general. This was a case in which the religious rights of one group ran counter to another group's rights not to be discriminated against over something that they can't help or change. It should not be surprising. There are many cases in which one right can contradict another right or one person's, (or group's), rights can contradict another's. This is just one such case.
Now there are two ways to deal with rights that conflict with each other. One is to decide that some rights are important and others are not, that some people's rights matter and other's don't, and then rank them in order of importance. I would not want to live in that world. For instance, I would not want a white, male politician's right to freedom of expression to trump that of a black or aboriginal, female politician's, nor would I want it to trump my right to decide whether I will listen to either of them. (Obviously, this is only a hypothetical example.)
The other way is to decide that all rights, and everybody's rights, are equally valid and important and must be equally protected. Where rights conflict, you acknowledge that every right is limited by every other right; that everybody's rights are limited by everybody else's rights; that there are no absolute rights, (not even freedom of expression or freedom of religion.) Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose. As to where the boundaries between rights should be drawn, and who should draw them, this is why we have courts and why courts must be impartial. Who better to judge than a judge? Laws, after all, are the way in which rights are enforced in the everyday world.
Right at the start, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms says, "The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society." I believe that this is what that means. There are no absolute rights. Every right is limited by every other right. Everybody's rights are limited by everybody else's rights. Where rights conflict, our impartial courts of law are the ones to sort it out. So what happened between the Law Societies and Trinity Western is just what should have happened. The Supreme Court weighed the right to freedom of religion and conscience, (CCRF section 2a), against equality rights, (CCRF section 15), and, in the end, they ruled for the latter.
Anyway, that's what I think. Thank you for your attention...

nateday has a herniated disk in his neck. He has a slipped disk riding that. It's putting pressure on his spinal cord that is causing him the worst kind of pain in his drawing arm. He can't sleep. He can't sit or tand without pain. He can't work. Drawing is agony. He and Vixie are behind on rent and utilities. There's next-to-no food in the house, either.I'm no doctor, but at a guess, Nate is probably going to need surgery to fix his neck. Beyond that, he and Vixie need money for bills and food. Nate streams when he can, although it's torture for him. Simply put, he needs donations to get out of a very tough spot. Please consider helping this tormented Furry artist.

Otter Man (a song)
General | Posted 7 years agoOtter Man
(Tune: “The Other Man,” Sloan)Maybe you go to eat at a restaurant and order too much fish
Maybe you and a friend go out walking with a little too much swish
Maybe you cuddle too many buddies but it hasn't stopped you yet
We’ve all been in some situation with an otter we regret
When you're the otter man
Dignity just bores you
When you're the otter man
Everyone abhors you
Maybe I ought to try understanding what is meant by dignity
Maybe I ought to be more concerned what other people think of me
Maybe, but I'm just too busy having fun for lessons I should learn
We’ve all been in some situation with an otter it's my turn
To be the otter man
I'm so sleek and furry
’Cause I'm the otter man
Others wish they were me
I’m gonna dance like nobody can see
And I'll embarrass nobody but me
I'm gonna hug anybody who’ll dare
If that makes you sick I really don't care
Because I'm busy having too much fun for all the looks I'm sure to get
We’ve all been in some situation with an otter we regret
And I'm the otter man
I'm so cute and furry
Yeah, I'm the otter man
People wish they were me
Yeah, I'm the otter man
Everyone adores me
Yeah, I'm the otter man
Dignity just bores me
Yeah!
Yeah! (We’ve all been in some situation with an otter)
Yeah! (We’ve all been in some situation with an otter)
Yeah! (We’ve all been in some situation with an otter we regret)

charlestonrat's father (sic) left his mother nine years ago to find somebody new who'll still "bed" him at hm at his age. (His mother is 63, his father is likely older.) His mother spent that time trying to make him take responsibility for his own debts, which quickly built up as he tried to get younger womens' attention. The courts have finally rendered a verdict, leaving her £200,000 in debt. She has had to sell her house to pay off his debts and it wasn't enough.Charleston and his mum need £25,000 for a lawyer who'll actually help them. (They had one before who did boo-all.) Towards this, they have opened a GoFundMe account. Please consider helping this Furry artist and his mother.

kokuei posted a journal about some friends of his. They are in a very bad situation. They are a "transmasculine guy" and his girlfriend who live with her ex. The ex is a classic abuser; he had her cut off from all of her friends or anybody else but him. Now that she has Mr. Transmasculine... without names, I'm struggling to refer to all three of them properly and not get them confused... the Ex has gotten really bad. He hits and rapes Her and locks up and probably hits her service dog. (The dog no longer alerts her to oncoming migraines or gives her emotional support for PTSD.)
They need cash to get the hell out of dodge. They need $7,000.00 for first and last and a security deposit on an apartment, retraining the dog and supplies for the new place. Please consider helping this desperate couple.

phsyco2's mother is dying now. (Sorry for the Wall-O-Text ™ it takes two paragraphs just to touch the highlights!)On top of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, she has arthritis, early-stage dementia, and incontinence. For the last ten years, Charles has been taking care of her. His mother seems to have been trying to drink herself to death. And either because of alcoholism or dementia, maybe both, she's been piling up debt and hiding the mail so Charles wouldn't find out. Meanwhile, Charles has been literally* driven mad trying to keep his mother going, while the government agencies that make-up Britain's social safety net have been about as much help as an auxiliary anus.
Now his mother is in hospital, dying from a massive infection and failed organs... all of them, really... he's been getting the mail and finding out just how much debt he's in. He has no income, no art skills, nothing he can sell, no hope. He can't even get to the hospital to visit his mother without help from friends and that's wearing thin. On top of having high functioning Aspergers, Manic Depression, ADHD, OCD, synesthesia, insomnia and possibly a few other problems, he's now suffering clinical depression and has tried once to commit suicide.
TL:DR -- Charles has been reduced to begging. He needs £4,000 to help with his mother's old debts. Towards this, he has opened a GoFundMe campaign. (So far it has raised £427.) Please consider helping this desperate Furry.

tigress lost a family member. It happened suddenly, a very unpleasant surprise for her family, none of them were ready. The funeral home did not include an urn in the cost of the cremation. They're offering a "velveteen bag" instead.Amanda M. needs money for a proper urn to hold the ashes. She has not said exactly how much she needs, but funerals are typically expensive. Happy New Year + My Life in 2017
General | Posted 8 years agotl:dr Happy 2018. I didn't get a damn thing done in 2017, in large part because of medical issues.
In November of 2015, I moved from Mississauga, Ontario, (a pretentious, little suburb just west of Toronto), to Hamilton, Ontario, (a former steel town on the west end of Lake Ontario), because rents were cheaper there. My brother had gone into a nursing home because his health had been spoiled by a massive infection, which Mississauga General hadn't treated aggressively enough. (He lost his right leg below the knee to it.) We had to sell the house we’d inherited from mom so that he could afford rent at the nursing home. Luckily, the entire Greater Toronto Area (GTA), has been in a housing bubble for some time. We got an excellent price for the old house, but not until June. And yes, I got my share.
In the meantime, I was on welfare. I moved into a single room in a rooming house with very cheap rent. I generously call it cosy, but it had enough room for nearly everything I want to do. Then I received a bunch of my brother's knife collection and a mass of photographs from home that I had to store permanently. I managed even so but sharing a bathroom and kitchen, while my refrigerator is a little, old bar fridge with no proper freezer, soon got to be worse than an inconvenience.
My project for 2017 was to find a new apartment. I didn't want to have to share anything; I did want a proper kitchen and bathroom and preferably no carpets, (because bare floors are easier to clean.) That didn't happen. Instead, I had health issues to deal with, both my brother's and my own.
My brother had several health issues going on. He had a sore on his good foot that was not healing. The doctor at the nursing home thought he might have circulation problems and sent him for an ultrasound. The test turned up some pretty significant blockage, so he had an operation to unclog the arteries in his leg. A few weeks later he had an appointment with the same doctor to see if the operation had helped. (It had; the sore was finally healing.) And I had to go with him to all three appointments. (I'm not sure why, he's perfectly capable of minding himself, he's not senile.)
Over 2017, my brother had several appointments with two other health care centres. I had to go with him to those, too. After losing his leg, he spent time at a rehabilitation hospital where he was fitted for a prosthetic leg and learned to use it. Now he goes back there regularly to check that it still fits properly. He had four or five of those. He has been having kidney issues as well. He has regular appointments with a renal specialist. At one point his kidney function was weak enough that they were considering him for dialysis. Then they adjusted his meds, and it improved enough that they didn't do that after all. He had six-odd of those appointments. And then there were his new shoes. My brother had extra wide feet, (he just has the one now, but the prosthetic needs to match it), so I had to go with him to a store that sells extra wide shoes. That took two trips because they didn't have the style he wanted in stock in his size. They had to order it from the warehouse.
Oh yes, and I make the trip from Hamilton to Toronto once a week because I seem to be the only one who visits him. Most of his friends were work friends. They abandoned him after he retired.
Then there were my own health issues.
It all started with anaemia. My doctor had me on an antidepressant because I had no energy and my will to keep active was weak. He also had the usual blood tests done, and it turned out that my blood iron levels were very low. So he took me off the antidepressant and put me on an iron supplement instead. Since then, he had me take all the usual tests to try to figure out what was causing it, but to no avail.
I'm also diabetic, and my blood sugar levels have been a bit high. My doctor referred me to a diabetes specialist at the famous McMaster University teaching hospital. Before I could see him, I had to get advice from a nurse practitioner two or three times to try to get my sugars under control. She ran the usual tests. They showed that my blood potassium level was high enough to cause a heart attack. She immediately sent me to get a chelating powder, which I had to take daily. (I found I had more energy after getting my potassium level down a bit.) And of course, there were more blood tests.
The nurse practitioner and the internal medicine specialist to whom my regular doctor referred me to both checked my kidney function, BTW. My creatinine levels are healthy, so it's not kidney failure, (thank goodness!)
So I've been working on diabetes, potassium and anaemia together since about March. There have been appointments after appointments with endocrinologists and haematologists at McMaster, an internal medicine specialist at her clinic in Burlington, (the next city east of Hamilton), and of course my regular doctor. So far:
- diabetes - probably because I'm overeating, I mean to pay better attention to that in the new year, but having my own kitchen would be a big help;
- high potassium - not a clue;
- anaemia - nothing yet.
Last month, the haematologist had me repeat the endoscopy and colonoscopy my regular doctor sent me to have a couple of years ago, this time at McMaster with the clinic he knows. That was an… interesting experience. First I had to clean my guts out with a heavy duty laxative -- just yuck! Then, because I had nobody to escort me home, they decided that I couldn't have a sedative, so I had to have both procedures without any. Had I been a stereotypical fox… no, even for a subby slut of that degree, it would have been a steaming heap of No Fun! And I hadn't cleaned my guts out well enough. The surgeon gave up and sent me home with more heavy duty laxative so I could try again next day.
Next day, I was good to go. Since I'd done so well without a sedative the day before, they talked me into doing without again. It meant I got to go home sooner, but it was still No Fun. The surgeon found just one polyp, which he took as a sample for analysis. They told me to wait for a call to arrange an appointment for a CT scan of my upper intestines.
Last week I got a letter telling me when my CT scan appointment is and how to prepare for it. It's for tomorrow, (January 2nd.) Luckily, they stumbled on a day when I'm not doing anything. I'm not supposed to eat today, or tomorrow until after the scan. And I have a feeling this procedure won't be much fun either, although at least I won't get anything jammed up an orifice. No, I just have to drink a mass of x-ray dye. Yuck… And I bet you a nickel they won't find the cause of the anaemia, either.
And I won't get the results until April. I don't know why it'll take so long.
Happy New Year, my friends. I hope 2018 will be at least a little less stupid than 2017 was; for me, for us, and the world.

EDIT -- *sigh* It's my own fault for working too late and not editing before posting.
- I included December 1st and 2nd in my list when Advent Sunday isn't until the 3rd.
- That alone made the final count wrong, but it was wrong anyway.
- I missed several typos, too.
- I replaced "Xtn" With "Christian."
- And I added an introduction and a link to a sharable copy of my list.
You see, I do a weekly birthday update for members of the Toronto Furry email list... which is kind of a waste because hardly anybody uses email lists anymore... which includes a list of upcoming holidays and occasions. To get my list of "The Holidays," I take the December list of holidays from TorFur and edit out anything before Advent, (or add anything between Advent and December if it happens to be in November), as well as anything specifically Furry, then add occasions in January up to the 5th. Finally, I count them all. But this year I was up late doing it and I did a bad job. Then I posted it without editing it first. I should have waited and posted it today. Sorry folks, here's a good version. 27NO2017

A Letter To The CBC
General | Posted 8 years agoI just sent the following complaint to the CBC. It's about a program from their long-running "Ideas" series called "Sex, Truth and Audio Tape."
Between 37:01 and 37:09 in the program, a female voice said --
"You have Furries? That's a whole 'nuther wide world of people who have some kind of like animal, or anthropomorphic incorporation in their sexuality..."
Although this is technically true in a way and in some cases, it implies that the Furry fandom is about sex. It is not.
To put it briefly, Furries, (as they call themselves), are fans of cartoon animals; Mickey Mouse, Buggs Bunny, etc. Now it's true that most Furry fans have "fursonas," cartoon animal characters that represent them to other fans. Bear in mind also that Furry fans are mostly young men and women dealing with their sexuality. Of course, they are going to prefer porn that reflects their other interests as well. Google "porn" and you will see sexual images that reflect every fandom, hobby, and profession in the world and some that you wish you'd never heard of. But baseball, plumbing, and politics are not fetishes... even if there are fetishes about them... and neither is Furry.
I listened to this program as a podcast. Yes, I am a Furry fan myself.
If you're curious, you can find "Sex, Truth and Audio Tape" at this address. -- http://www.cbc.ca/radio/ideas/sex-t.....cape-1.4369644
The Furry reference notwithstanding, it's actually pretty good.
Should I have done this? What do you think?

And remember, if you'd like to help, but can't contribute right now, a signal boost is usually helpful, too. You may copy-pasta this journal, the URL links should still work but you might need to re-make the personal links.
I watch neuromanson myself.
