tobeabird was hit by Hurricane Irma. This alone is trouble, but Phoenix has worse problems on top of that. She has problems with her lungs. She needs to keep warm to avoid pneumonia. That's hard when the power's out to her home; she's in the red zone, it won't be back for a couple of days or more. Her mother is paying for a hotel room for her until her house has power again. But she needs to eat to get well!
Phoenix needs food money. How much will depend on how long, but she's looking for $2,600. She's offering Pay What You Want sketches in return. Please consider helping this thunderstruck Furry artist.
Here is Phoenix's own journal on the subject with all the details and links o sketch samples. -- http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/8411111/
Phoenix goes into far too much detail in her journal to repeat here, but this is Phoenix's PWYW ToS. Please read it before requesting a commission. -- http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/8030669/
Here is Phoenix's gallery for your perusal. -- http://www.furaffinity.net/gallery/tobeabird/
Or if you'd like to just contribute, Phoenix's Ko-Fi account is ko-fi.com/tobeabird
And remember, if you'd like to help, but can't contribute right now, a signal boost is usually helpful, too. You may copy-pasta this journal, the URL links should still work but you might need to re-make the personal links.

wolfgrrlie and her family have been living through stressful times recently, (as have we all.) The stress is taking its toll on her husband; guessing from her description, he might be turning abusive. Wolfgrrlie believes that it would be safer for her children, three and six, (and for herself I'd guess), to go and live elsewhere.Lucikily, Wolfgrrlie's sister has a solution; the apartment above hers will be vacant soon. Her sister has been trying to find work for her near that apartment and it looks promising. But to move, Wolfgrrlie needs money up front.
Wolfgrrlie needs at least two months rent, possibly three, to secure the apartment, plus cash for moving expenses. She figures it will take $4,750 all told; October 15th is her deadline! She is reluctantly soliciting donations, which can be made to her GoFundMe campaign, below. She is also selling pre-made plushies and taking plushie commissions. Please consider helping this Furry artist and her children move to safety.

jace is in pain. He doesn't get to see his doctor until Thursday. He needs some pain management supplies until then. For that, he needs cash. He is reluctantly requesting donations. If he can, later, he is offering art in return, (but in his present condition, there's doubt that he can.) Please consider helping this pain-wracked Furry artist.

Mr Frog went a-wooing and he did ride
His sword and pistol by his side
Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh
He rode up to Miss Mouse’s tree…
And asked, “Miss Mouse, will you marry me?”...
Miss Mouse replied, “I can't do that!”...
“I have to ask my Uncle Rat.”...
But Uncle Cheetah saw the pair…
And cried, “What are you doing there?”...
He said, “A-wooing is a crime”...
“With a three hundred fifty dollar fine!”...
“If that's the price,” Mr. Frog did say…
“Miss Mouse may be maiden to her dying day!”...
So home again Mr. Frog did ride…
His bag of money by his side...

Anthrocon 2017 -- My Summary
General | Posted 8 years agoThis is the end of a much longer report that I'm still working on assembling. When I have it completed, I'll post a link as it's likely to be TL:DR for many. (What can I say? You can't tell a story in a tweet.) This is my summary of the con.
The weather was warm and mostly clear, the city as green as it could be; very summer-y indeed.
Pittsburgh is beautiful! The suburbs are as green as Toronto used to be. The downtown core is full of wonderful old buildings, some dating back to around the war of independence. Pittsburghers, (if that's the word for them), are really nice, to tourists anyway. They've been working in the IT industry since the steel mill shut down and judging by their state of road repair, they're doing pretty well. If I had to move to the States, Pittsburgh would be a good choice.
Anthrocon is big. Really big. I mean you might think it's a long way down the street to the chemists, but that's nothing compared to Anthrocon! Listen…
But seriously, it's big. Running into someone you know is either something arranged in advance or a million to one shot. If you're not comfortable talking to strangers, it doesn't leave you much to do. That's why I spent so much time in panels.
The panels were useful, the writing technology panel especially. I'm not sure I learned much that I didn't know before, but I enjoyed them anyway.
The dealers den was big enough that I couldn't see it all in one go between panels. I barely got through the whole thing over the weekend before the con ended. Walking through the dealers den usually feels to me like passing through a zoo where they don't feed the animals. I really just wanted to see what kind of wares were on sale, but of course several dealers tried to get me talking to judge what they could sell me. Sorry, but I left empty handed, even though one table had some cute otter plushies.
The entrance to the DLCC was on the ground floor at the river end of the building. The dealers den and art show were on the second floor with entry on the river end of the building. The parade left from a big room on that floor, too. All the other programming was on the third or fourth floor at the street end of the building. It made for a long march to get anywhere. There was programming at the Westin as well, but I didn't get to any of it. Since only fursuiters and the mobility impaired were allowed to use the bridge between the Westin and the DLCC, getting between them would have been an even longer March. Understandably, there was no programming at the overflow hotels.
Getting around both the DLCC and the Westin involved riding escalators. Kids would sit on the moving handrails and ride that way. Their weight would put the handrails out of sync with the stairs and the escalator would stop automatically. This was a major problem, since the height between floors was considerable. Only fursuiters and the disabled were allowed on the few elevators, so out of service escalators meant climbing a lot of stairs. Luckily, I never encountered a stalled escalator. I assume the repair crews were on the job.
In the end, the main attraction of Anthrocon, or any Furry con, is just being with other Furries. In that, Anthrocon was a huge success. I got to spend four days immersed in Furry culture, (when I wasn't getting food or going to bed.) The second most important thing was the fursuiters. My only regret is that I didn't get to see Telephone. But there were big, living plushies everywhere around and it was so much fun! Third was the art, of course. But I spent so much time at panels and the dealers den that I never got to the art show. If I go again, I'll have to dedicate one day to just the art show and dealers.
Anthrocon has been compared to Furry Mecca; once in every Furry’s life, we are obliged to make the pilgrimage. Well, I finally did mine. I don't know if it entitles me to anything, but I did it and I'm glad.
Would I do it again? I'm not sure. It was an expensive trip! The Om-nom-ni alone cost about $875, (which was less than their estimate.) I could reduce that by coming Thursday and leaving Sunday, but Porter only has one flight a day to and from Pittsburgh and it's early, so I'd have missed most of Sunday. Maybe some of the other overflow hotels are cheaper. And of course I could share a room and divide the expense with roommates. I'm not sure I know anyone who would want to share a room with an old gaffer like me, though.
Porter only cost me about $285 round trip. I might have gotten that down by booking further in advance than I did, but that's still a really good price no matter how you go. Food and incidental expenses cost maybe $160 more. Plus some of my expenses are done now; my passport is good for ten years, my new laptop should be good for at least five.
So the question is, was Anthrocon worth the price? This time last year I would have said no. This year I’ve been in a better financial position, so yes, I can afford to spend that much money on that kind of fun. And it was a lot of fun! But would I do it again? It depends on whether I'm still in a good financial position and I can get better deals. I'd like to give it one more try though, now that I know what I'd be facing.
And I guess that's what this report is all about.

Anthrocon 2017 Ends
General | Posted 8 years ago(This is part of my report of my trip to Anthrocon. I'm posting it now to give you the statistics. Please forgive my posting something this rough, it's a first draft because I wanted to get it out quickly.)
Closing Ceremony
The event started pretty close to right on time.
After the story hour, Charlie Adler told Uncle Kage don't be a dick. At least I think that's what Uncle Kage said he said, he mumbled the last word.
Attendance this year was 7,544, which makes AC still the biggest furry con in the world.
There were 1,890 fursuits in the parade.
All told, the con brought in $31,998.00, plus $3,000 from tee shirt sales, for the con charity, Hope Haven Farm.
The super sponsor jerseys were held up at the border because they were made in China. AC will mail them out ASAP at no further cost to them and hopefully none to AC.
Tauren Fox made a nice picture for the interprefurs.
KP thanked the volunteers and the members.
Gen. Talon thanked the dancers and the A/V crew, Uncle Kage thanked the other performers including Tien Long, (Ronnie.)
AC2018 will be July 5-8, the theme will be Movie Monsters.
Uncle Kage said the zoo was being moved to the Westin for the dead dog party and asked us to leave the DLCC at the end of the ceremony. He asked us all to be good animals for the duration of the con.
One member asked if they could legalize awoo. Uncle Kage referred the question to Boozy Badger.
And with that, Uncle Kage declared the con over and I rushed to the men’s room.
(PS. I'm declaring myself back from hiatus. It didn't help me find a new place to live, just cut me off from some of my friends. Realistically, expect me to be pretty slow with journals and stuff anyway.)

Lost Stolen Or Strayed: Saara Mar
General | Posted 9 years agoOfficially, I am still on hiatus from FA so that I can concentrate on searching for a new apartment. This special journal post is to inform
saara’s friends of his current problems.
Shortly before nine this evening, Taral called me. I was a little distracted at the time because I was trying to gather some groceries before the store closed for the night. The gist of our conversation however was that Taral is recovering from a stroke. He attributes it to incorrectly prescribed or administered drugs, but he wasn’t specific.
(That, or I was reaching for something and failed to note the exact cause; if so, then I apologize to all concerned.)
Taral implied that he had either been too weak to speak properly or had temporarily lost the ability to speak until today. He did not explain why he was unable to post a journal of his own to his FA account, possibly he is still away from his computer. (He didn't say where he was calling from, but his last journal was posted only a couple of weeks ago, so it's fairly likely that he's still in hospital, probably St Joseph's as it's closest to his home.) At any rate, he asked me to post this for him.
This is all I know about the situation at this time. I’ll only add that he sounded coherent, although his word choice wasn't as precise as I'd normally expect from him, but perhaps he was just tired.
I’ll try to find out where he is in case his friends want to send good wishes. (I know I do.) On the assumption that not all of Taral’s followers also follow me, please spread the word.
UPDATE -- According to Google, the number Taral called me from was his home number. I assume therefore that he is home. Those who know him will know how to reach him.

Please Help This Talking Husky
General | Posted 9 years agoOfficially I'm still AFK while I look for new quarters, but I was pretty sure some of you would be interested in this.
Perhaps some of you are familiar with YouTube star Mishka The Talking Husky; a beautiful, real-life husky dog who "talks" in modified howls. (She sounds a lot like Scooby Doo, actually.)
Mishka's not doing very well. Her left forepaw or leg is painful, she favours it and won't put weight on it. She has had a cancer removed from that leg previously. OTOH, she's 14 years old, so joint trouble is not entirely unexpected.
Anyway, Mishka's owners need money for vet bills to have her diagnosed and treated. They've started a GoFundMe campaign. Please consider helping out this famous husky.
If you'd like to contribute, Mishka's GoFundMe account is https://www.gofundme.com/mishkas-medical-fund
https://youtu.be/3ihdJFJfZ7E
Here is Mishka's Youtube video on the subject with further details. -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ihdJFJfZ7E
And again, Mishka's GoFundMe account is https://www.gofundme.com/mishkas-medical-fund
The description for the YT video and the GoFundMe both say...
Mishka the Talking Husky has had some health issues recently. Not too long ago she underwent surgery to have a tumor removed and now she is having trouble walking. We took her to the vet and she received an anti-inflammatory shot and medicine to take. She is also taking medicine to help relieve the pain. A week has gone by and she seems to be getting worse and has lost weight. We will be taking her back in for further evaluation, including x-rays, and treatment.
At 14 1/2 years old, we want to make sure that we provide Mishka with all of the best medical care that we can. It’s tough to see her like this. Your contributions will help pay for Mishka's medical costs. Anything you can give, whether big or small, would be greatly appreciated. We will try to send thanks to every contributor. Thank you for all your love and support. Mishka loves each and every one of you.

AFK for a while
General | Posted 9 years agoFor the next few days, maybe a couple of weeks, I'll be away from social media while I look for a new apartment, something I should have been doing quite a while ago. I like this little room, it's cozy and efficient, but as time goes on it's been getting a little too cozy. Besides, I have to share the bathroom and the kitchen; the former has contributed to a few *cough* problems that we won't get into, while the latter has contributed to me not eating as healthy meals as I really should be eating. I also need some storage space for some stuff of my brother's that I need to hang onto for him, (because he has no storage space at all in the home), and a little for my own, too. And I'd really like a dishwasher, other than myself. In short, I want to move up to a bachelor.
And that means I need to concentrate on the task, which in turn means that, for a little while, (I'm not sure just how long), social media like FA has to go. I don't really believe that anybody will mind my absence, given that I don't post that much, but I still wanted to let you all know that I'm not posting "Please Help This" journals for a reason. And that I'll be checking in every-so-often in case of comments, PMs and such, but not much else. And that I will be back sooner-or-later, although I might be further delayed while I get Internet installed and replace this old junker of a computer. And I might have to just nuke unread journals and submissions when I do get back, I've a feeling they'll build up pretty rapidly in my absence.
One last thing; does anybody in the Hamilton/Burlington area of Ontario, Canada know of any bachelor or single room apartments available? I'm not fussy about which floor, as long as it's clean and bug-free and the rent is reasonable. I'm looking for $600-700/mo, preferably including utilities and appliances, no carpet, furnished or not, preferably moving in at the beginning of March. I'm an older gentleman, clean and quiet, non-smoker, financially secure. I'd really appreciate any tips!
Hasta la vista, babies.

zharr18's car was rammed by a deer. The whole driver's side front quarter was crunched. Zharr felt that it could have been repaired, but his insurance company wrote it off. While he was asleep, the bastards towed it. (Luckily, he'd been able to afford gap insurance, so his car loan is paid off.) Zharr absolutely needs that car to survive, it's how he gets to work. He's found another used car, much like his old one, at a price he can handle, IF he can put a big enough down-payment together. Without a car to get to work, that's very difficult. Please bear in mind that Zharr has had financial setback after setback his whole life. He's nearly been independent at least twice before, able to move in with his partner
sarustreeleafwolf. Then some random event has yanked it out from under him. Last time his car was tee-boned and Sarus nearly killed. This latest setback has hit him hard and he's pretty much run out of friends and relatives who can help him get back on his feet one more time. In the past, he's accepted commissions, but with three jobs, he just doesn't have time for art anymore. He needs some random help.Zharr needs cash for a down payment, as much as he can get. He is reluctantly requesting donations; any little bit helps. Towards this, he has set up a GoFundMe campaign. Please consider helping this star-crossed Furry artist.

eurofurence's charity, Sieben Katzenleben's Finca, rescues Spanish feral cats from the street and from killing stations and gives them food and shelter until they can find forever homes. The rent on Sieben's property is coming up in June. EuroFurence isn't until August 16th; by that time there could be no Finca to get their donations!Sieben needs sixty thousand Euros, (US$64,000.) Towards this, they've set up a charity campaign with Start Next, (a German site similar to GoFundMe.) Please consider helping these feral cats stay off the street.
Here is their Start Next campaign. -- https://www.startnext.com/7kl/unterstuetzer/#pnav
Google Translate of the website:
Sieben-Katzenleben e.V. - Rescue service station
Help us to pay and secure the accommodation of the cats, so that we can continue to save animals.
We have a shelter in Spain, where cats are taken from killing stations or from the street until they are mediated. This collection center was taken over by hire purchase. In June 2017 EUR 60,000.00 will be due for the final rate. We urgently need help to raise this sum, otherwise the cats will lose their accommodation and sit on the street or land in the killing station.

starmandeluxe are trying to pay off a car loan and a mortgage on just Ramsay's salary, Valen is unable to work at this time. They're managing, that's not the problem, it's why they're having trouble dealing with the problem. The problem is Valen's sister. She's recently escaped from a fifteen year long abusive relationship, she needs time and treatment to recover. None of her three siblings can take all three of her children. So until Valen's sister is fit to be a mother again, Valen and Ramsay have been given one of her kids, a seven year old boy who probably has issues of his own. Plus he'll likely need surgery to correct a speech impediment, you can hardly understand him. The car loan plus the mortgage plus getting the boy settled in is as much as they can handle. Remember, Valen can't work just now, but luckily she can art. (Ramsay can't art, he has a full-time job.)

tasimmet has dealt with depression before, but for some reason the meds in her new IUD just clobbered her! She couldn't cope with anything. She lost her job, bills piled up, her bank account ran out... She was convinced that there wouldn't even be a tomorrow! But of course, tomorrow kept coming and coming. She was thinking about suicide. And all along it was her IUD altering her hormone levels that was doing this to her. She's going to have it removed as soon as she's over the flu. The Medical Services Plan of B.C. will cover that. But then she'll need time to recover and get back on her feet.Tasimmet needs money and she needs work to occupy her mind. General | Posted 9 years agoOnyx's father named him as the executor of his will. That makes Onyx responsible for his fathers debts, including a mass of unpaid utility bills, some credit card debt and $18,000 in unpaid mortgage. His father left a life insurance policy, but it wasn't enough to cover everything, (especially after his estranged mother and brother browbeat $9,500 out of him.) Onyx is disabled, he cannot work. (And yes, of course SSI rejected him.) The bank has already filed with the courts to foreclose on Onyx's house; there's no way he'll be able to keep it now.
Onyx has friends who are willing to put him and his two cats up until he can get his act back together, but not until the end of February. Onyx needs money for utilities and food until then. Hopefully the courts won't decide on the case until February, but if they do, Onyx will need rent money as well.
Onyx believes he will need $5,000 to finish paying off his father's bills and keep himself going until March. Towards that, he has started a GoFundMe campaign. So far he has $315. Please consider helping this house-poor Furry.

Thoughts On 2017
General | Posted 9 years agoYou know what? As a lot of the American Public start to realize that Donald Trump is a snake oil salesman, a lot more people than that just might be giving up on saviours and taking their lives in their own hands. If you want to make the world right, you have to do it yourself. And maybe people are going to start trying to make the world, or at least their part of it, a better place.
The problem still is -- as it's always been -- that nobody agrees on what "better" means. We still have the same old scapegoats and enemies... the Repugnicans, the Democrats, the libtard elite, the unwashed rednecks, the niggers, the latinos, the muslims, the jews, the cops, the west, the establishment, blah blah blah... and nobody wants to listen to the other guy, especially while Fox News, (or Global News here in Canuckistan), keeps telling them to fear and hate The Other Guy, on a variety of pretexts wider than my waistline. And who can blame you? Which of it is true is a helluva lot to think about! You have to cut mental corners just to get through it all!
But relying on appearances, prejudices and rumours is exactly the problem. It would be nice if we could just assume that 99.9% of the people we meet are okay and the 0.1% we need to worry about are manageable. And that's almost certainly the case. But how do you convince the majority when they already have too much to think about? As the motto under all of my journals says...
When the going gets tough, the tough get going. And when the tough get going, the going gets really grim!
Buckle up, folks. 2017 is likely to be a rough ride!

Greetings Season 2016
General | Posted 9 years agoThere are some people in some places who get their panties in a twist over other people wishing them Happy Holidays. In their narrow, little Protestant worlds, it's all about Jesus's birthday, (which probably actually happened some time in April, if he was a real person at all), and they bitterly -- oh, so very bitterly -- resent the lack of a "MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! GOD BLESS!!!!!" on every pair of lips. If you run into one of those people, give them a copy of this list. (If you are one of those people, read carefully.)
This Is A List Of Every Holy Day And Related Secular Occasion Between Advent Sunday And Twelfth Night.
November 27th - Advent Sunday, Christ the King
November 30th - St Andrew's Day (Christian)
December 6th - St Nicholas Day
December 8th - Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary (Christian), Bodhi Day/Rohatsu (Buddhist)
December 10th - Human Rights Day
December 11th - Milad un Nabi (Islam, at sunset, Prophet's birfday)
December 12th - Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Catholic)
December 14th - Monkey Day
December 15th - Zamenhof Day
December 16th - Posadas Navidenas (Hispanic Christian, to the 25th), Beethoven's Birfday (1770)
December 21st - Winter Solstice, First Day of Winter, Yule (Pagan & Christian), Yalda (Zoroastrian)
December 23rd - Humanlight (Secular Humanist), Festivus (rest of us), Christmas Adam (because Adam came before Eve)
December 24th - Hanukkah begins (at sunset, to January 1st), Christmas Eve
December 25th - Christmas Day (Christian & secular), Feast of the Nativity (Orthodox Christian), Newtonmas (Secular Humanist)
December 26th - Boxing Day (nobody really knows), St Stephen's Day (Catholic), Zarathosht No-Diso (Zoroastrian), Beginning of Kwanzaa (to January 1st), Wren Day (Irish Catholic), National Whiners Day
December 28th - Holy Innocents (Christian)
December 30th - Holy Family (Catholic)
December 31st - New Year's Eve, Watch Night
January 1st 2017 - New Year's Day, Mary Mother of God (Catholic), Feast of St Basil (Orthodox Christian), Holy Name of Jesus (Orthodox Christian), Gantan-sai (Shinto New Year's Day), (end of Hanukkah), beginning of Hot Tea Month
January 2nd (Monday) - Observation of New Year's Day (where it's a statutory holiday), Day After New Year's Day
January 5th - Twelfth Night (twelfth day after Christmas, Pentecost eve), Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti (Sikh)
TOTAL OCCASIONS: 45 (forty five) (non-Christian: 27)
