A Beastly Update, and there will be more...
Posted 7 years agoI have been working in the shadows for some time now, chipping away at a fearsome trio of dragons. I challenged myself as much as they challenge me, but the task is done.
Now, I have updated my website: http://www.tonibellart.com/ and if you want to support me and get something in return, sign up for the mailing list! I will be posting artwork updates, tutorials, merchandise listing, kickstarters and more on that mailing list. Those that join are also eligible for future giveaways and discounts! There is no reason not to sign up, honestly. I will be posting perhaps once a month, maybe twice if I am particularly ambitious.
I have set up my Twitch as well and I hope to start streaming soon, if I can get over the anxiety of it. I always nervous about such things, which is odd because my day job is quite social in nature. All is well though, and things will happen in good time.
Best bidding to you.

72 pages later....
Posted 7 years agoI have completed a rough draft to a short (heh) story I've been writing! It's always been meant to be a larger book, but I wanted to test the waters before I dive in deep because.....
I will be illustrating it as well! Not every page will have something on it, but ideally the important stuff will be presented. The pages that do not have illustrations will have design aspects to them, though, I want to make it personal, ja?
So... that being said, my work coming out now will present that stuff! At some point I will make a kickstarter but MEH that is far away at this point. I also need to get better at advertising myself, but one step atta time...
Now that I got your attention, let me give you a synopsis:
Calder is a hunter who resents how fast society is moving. They abandon their animal nature and coddle the weak while the strong kill each other for scraps. His solution? Go on a suicide quest into a haunted section of a forest, one that leaves your body broken or your mind. Inside he searches for something that will give his life meaning in a world that has shunned him.

Posted 8 years agoThank you for the support! I also noticed that I've been here since 2009, yeesh. I'm old.
A year later-- Still alive and got stuff brewin' for ya.
Posted 8 years agoThings have been a flurry of busy here recently. I got promoted last year and am just now getting back into artwork.. which means, I have stuff to show!... soon.
I have a project that I will be putting on Patreon soon, but I need to stitch together a few things before I announce anything yet. :) Big things are coming!
Well, I can give one teaser. It's an illustrated novel with dragons. Let's go.

...And we bought a home!
Posted 10 years agoNow will be the push to starting the business. We will be doing a card shop with board games and the like and also an artistic aspect as well, which may be a separate shop depending on how we play it. I am thinking strictly a gallery would be difficult. Probably a blend of gallery, workshop, modelling, classes, good for sale made by artists and the like. Basically covering a broad price point, but also providing more options for the consumer. This is up for debate though! Much work to do.
Sweet T-Shirts?
Posted 10 years agoA lot of my favorite old shirts are breaking down, they're almost 10 years old! I am looking to replace them with ones that have some sweet monster art, illustrationy stuff, y'know, good stuff. Looking for stuff that's $20 and lower.. I checked threadless and they aren't hitting me in the right spot for more than two shirts, anyone have an idea where I can get affordable artist t-shirts?
Moving soon! Not accounts, but states -mentally n physically
Posted 10 years agoAhhh, yes, the lovely act of moving your apartment full of crap to another one 800 miles away. We have not gotten many quotes yet but it will be a bit of a punch in the stomach to say the least! We can foot it though, no problem. This isn't a post asking for commissions or money. This is a TLDR post.
Instead, it's a post as to why we are moving to Arkansas and not California. You see, a couple years ago I had the dream of working under a large studio and jamming out the arts for games. My head was inflated to a monstrous size when I graduated art school, as are many other students I am sure. You are told of the possibilities you may fulfill and they ignite your ego. After college I had no professional work for almost a year, and creatively I was at a loss and mentally I was broken. I felt artistically hopeless. I knew what I was capable of but didn't know where to turn nor did I have the courage to speak up and get out there. Being a lurker has its costs.
I had a day job so money was coming in, but the work was mindless and left me drained (and still does because I still work there). Things changed after I finished the Kobold commission. It boosted my confidence and gave me the courage to send out a couple ads to a website called Reddit to which I found two clients who are still my clients almost a year later. I also got some work from Fantasy Flight which was great as well, but more on that later.
These two clients I mentioned, Lonely Wizard Studios and Mech Deck (you can find them on facebook if you want) are two different projects, the first being a fantasy video game project and the other being a board game with a sci-fi theme. I purposely chose to leave myself open for different styles of work because I grow stagnant easily and find myself growing bored easily. This would solve the issue! I also wanted to become more versatile as well. Now, the manner of working with these clients is very personal, I am working with them from the ground up and trying to give their game a voice. Much more back and forth and experimentation. I get to know the client's mindset and chip away what they don't want from their game to get what they really want. It's a process! Most is either not under NDA or published soon after, or is work that is not meant to be seen by the public (concept art is functional to a point). Work moves quickly and is processed quickly. Input is given, and we move on to the next problem. The clients and I are always thinking and learning.
Working with Fantasy Flight was great! The art director I worked with was nice and informative and the projects were fun to work on. There is a difference with the work I did for them and the impression it left on me. There is already an IP in place, and while lenient still has a focus. You are given a task and once performed you don't hear from the client unless they have some other work lined up for you. Another thing is that the work is under a NDA which seems to give the work a weaker impression on me. It's a little hard to describe but to me when a work is published the work is considered done. There is a finality to it. So when an image isn't published for a year the finality of it is less impressive. Working with clients like this is fine, there is no major issue, but the mindset is very different from the previous client. There are similarities though, to be sure.
Okay this post is getting kinda long, I know when I read journals I rarely read past the first paragraph so if you've made it this far you get a banana sticker. I am getting work through freelance just fine. The work pays well and is gratifying. In order to quit my day job I do need more work, but what is really stopping me from that is myself. I am terrible to keeping to a schedule, which is one of the reasons why I wanted to move to a studio job, but working from home is also gratifying in its own way. I have not worked in a professional studio so I don't know the difference but that doesn't mean I can't get a studio job in the future. I will be working on freelance in Arkansas but will also be looking into gallery work! I need to do more personal work.
The reason why Arkansas was decided on was because the Hubs wants to go to college, and the one he wants to go to is in his home state and allows him to be near his family. Rent will be a little cheaper (maybe, or be the same, but regardless cheaper than California rent). Freaking out about money is another thing. Taking away stresses helps creativity I think, but being stressed can also help it. It's strange. Another thing is that I want to get my nature on, and I told my husband I want the full redneck experience. I also want some chickens. He wants a cat, so I get some chickens. I would also like a mini garden. If we are renting a house we may be able to do some of these things, it all depends.
I am ready for change, my mind has stagnated in Michigan. Primarily that is why I want to move. I want to experience new things! This journal is kinda long so ummm... so long story short varied work is good, NDA and non-NDA work is cool, working with an established IP and establishing an IP are both cool, and don't procrastinate by writing this journal.

I don't see as many feral dragons so I thought I'd just try that out, next time I'd probably would just create an anthro. I dunno! Indecision!

Babbling thoughts on prints
Posted 11 years agoI have the print dilemma all tidied up but I am nervous as how to handle shipping. I know I will be using shipping tubes, and because of that I can't do any real matting, unless you want it framed but that would be more of your responsibility.
I know some of you are looking forward to the Kobold prints, so if you want things to be pushed along faster just send me a note and I will give you the details I have worked out. Basically $5 for US shipping and $10 for over seas. Not too complicated.
My concern was how much shipping was going to cost, but at the end of the day you kind of have to send a few to learn how much. Website shipping cost generators are basically useless. By basically useless it's obscene and scares me away from shipping even though for this type of shipment it wouldn't cost that much.
Another quick thing, I am tempted to do one of a few things in the future, probably some time in May when I have completed moving locations. These include opening up commissions more, and starting a Patreon. I am excited about Patreon since it would give me more time to work on personal work, but it seems like a far off goal.

Prints have come in!
Posted 11 years agoI will post an image soon, they look good! The ones I received are just test prints and I was thinking of a small giveaway to promote them. It's a print of the kobold image, and the printed test print size is 5x15, but the final print will be 10x30 and some 5x15 for people with less wall space.
For the 10x30, would you guys think a border would be good? It would cut into the size of the image but it helps if you want to pin it on a wall or frame it.

Happeh New Year!
Posted 11 years agoHope you all had a good night last night. I could only drink one martini for I decided that the mix wasn't very good and went to bed at 12 like an old person. I am still a busy person, though, things to do today! Mother in law is still in town so we are still wandering around.
I have also officially started work on a "mural" which is actually 3 large scale paintings. It's going to be an interesting year, I think.

All is well and a commission update!
Posted 11 years agoI hope you all have enjoyed your Christmas. I certainly did! This year I helped with cooking and heaven forbid I wake up early so I was a little tired.
I must apologize for my lack of updates. I have certainly completed and worked on work during the last submission but most of it I cannot post until it has been published! Working from home is a continuous struggle, and the worst part of it is not kicking up your feet and relaxing. Any of you guys have tips to keep a schedule? I barely stick to one. I work 4 days a week and do my artwork on the other 3. The first day I am usually quite tired and just relax but the last two should be fine for productivity, yes? I need an alarm clock that punches me when I go to facebook.
A quick update about commissions. They are now closed except for select commissions that I think would help my portfolio or are small in general. Single character commissions with no BG are closer to what I would be taking. I would like to work on personal work and my other continuous commissioners in the mean time.
If you still want to commission me just let me know, but let it be known I may refuse to accept it. I will still do some adoptables but bahh, I have work to do!
Werk it and twerk it.

Upcoming Character Adoptables!
Posted 11 years agoLong story short, I had to do some car repairs, and I need some new tires, and as a result our account has gone down enough to where I don't feel as if I have as nice of a safety net as I'd like. I am by no means in debt, but there is a threshold I like to be above.
So in my spare time I will make some characters and have a auction here and there to supplement this! Commissions are still open too. I am doing these also partly because of the print testing that I need to do to make sure the prints upcoming are of quality!
These auctions will not interrupt the commissions that are already in progress. :)
That being said, what type of characters would you like to see?

Prints coming soon as well as a upcoming 1k watcher raffle!
Posted 11 years agoI have readied the files for the print for printing. Just need to ship it off. The prints will be a 10x30 of the Kobold image, I will be offering a smaller version of it as well. The style will most likely be a lustre, and potentially a bonus metallic image. :) If you guys want archival prints I may have to do them through a website, but for now I am working on poster prints.
As far as the raffle goes once I have 1000 watchers I will open a raffle up for a character portrait, painted and all. :) I can't spend too much time on it, but it will be nice.
Until then, I will be werkin' and twerkin'.

777 watchers
Posted 11 years agoI just noticed I had 777 watchers! Umm... Maybe if I get time I'll make a celebratory sketch. If not, thanks to all that watch me because you guys are awesome. :) I do plan on streaming more, too. There are still some things I am working out but Livestream is clunky at best. I will predominantly stream during the week, on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Come watch meh!
Thank you for the submissions!
Posted 11 years agoWe (the client) have discussed the art submissions and contacted those who we thought were the closest match. The terms I gave you guys were very vague (we both used vague terms and got very broad results) so I apologize. Thanks to all that applied! If there is any more work in the future I'll let ya'll know. :)
Create semi-realistic fantasy work? My client needs more art
Posted 11 years agoA client I am doing concept and illustrations for needs more help for their fantasy rpg! It's a paying job, so drop your gallery and contact info and I will forward it! This is currently for character work.
Also, I hope to have some more work up soon, some things are under lock and key, but others not so much. It shall be out soon! You can checkout WIP in the scraps section as well!
Thinking about selling prints soon. Once I get more time to use my noodle, things will start chuggin'.
Also, what do you guys think about me streaming? Mmmmmminterested?

Prints? Original work?
Posted 11 years agoI have considered selling prints for some time now, but did not set it up in fear of having stock laying around being trip material. Are there any images that scream print material? There are also many websites that do the work for you, but I am not sure if it's more beneficial to do the work yourself or just let them deal with it. Quality control is harder to maintain when you allow a website to do it. I will have to look into this, or perhaps you have some insight?
Original work would be more tricky, as it would require careful shipping practices and it can't rely on a established website to do all the work for you. As a result I think smaller sketches and paintings would be most ideal and less room for damage and other painful things.
What do you think?
Also, I have 1 commission slot still open, anything after that will have to be on a wait list. :)

The "Get me to Illuxcon" commission auction
Posted 11 years agoMy schedule is freed up and and I have some money sitting in my paypal when I think... Illuxcon is only less than two months away, I MUST GO. I went there last year and if you take illustrating seriously it's an amazing experience.
Either this weekend (probably not with the downtime forthcoming) or Monday I will post an auction for a commission. Minimum bid will be $50 and can go as high as the bidders wish. The higher the bid the higher quality the image, pretty simple.
The basic $50 bid would be a basic sketch of 1-2 of your characters, where $1000 would be an oil painting with shipping included, of course. I may do auto buys, but leaving it open just seems more fun. We'll see.
Any money that exceeds the Illuxcon fund number (probably $400 or more based on last year's experience) will be geared toward getting me to other conventions. I am a convention virgin but it's an egg I've always wanted to crack open.
