So I should have done this a bit ago, for all the parts, but alas. Life is so busy! Work consumes most my time these days. So briefly-

Every... 8? or so years, my birthday (Nov 28th) falls on Thanksgiving. This is one of those years :D It's pretty awesome. I have great childhood memories of it. ^-^ This year should be a good one I hope. Upgrading my laptop as a gift to myself (loading more ram and a ssd... :D~)



Life update

A couple journals ago I updated about a number of things goign on. Work and life are pretty much the same. Sal and I have been married for three and a half months now, and that's awesome :)

Otherwise, regarding the vertigo and headaches and impending surgery... not happening. For now, at least. I got a second opinion, and had a CT scan done. I do have a deviated septum, but not severe enough to cause the problems I'm having. Just got an MRI of my brain and inner ears to check out for anything going wrong in those areas. No idea what I'll have to get done to fix it. Fingers crossed. :)

Regarding the psychological aspects I had mentioned, I've begun seeing a psychologist and recently a psychiatrist. I've been diagnosed with general anxiety disorder (always super stressed out) and dysthymia (chronic, low level depression). Basically I'm just less happy and more easily stressed/depressed/etc than the average person. Doing some cognitive therapy things to help out with the negative thought processes. But, it's been pretty bad, so I'm trying out some meds to help (zoloft). It's helped out immensely. GOtta balance the dose and everything, but so far it's helped out a ton. Not constantly stressing, constantly thinking bad things, etc. Also less grumpy dragon and stuff. So going well. :3

Just a general update on life! Breaking it into a few sections, so you can skip to the numeral if you want to read any region in specific:

I) Being married! :D – Needless to say, this is the best thing ever. Sal and I have been married for six weeks omg :D It’s really kinda surreal in a way. More so, it’s funny because nothing has really changed, at all. X3 we’re just living our lives together like always. Workin’ away and trying to do our best for the fandom. :3

II) I’ve advanced! (Grad school stuff) – For anyone who doesn't know, I’m a graduate student. I’m at a big university that has all kinds of focuses, but is sorta known for their biology. I’m in a cancer biology lab. About ½ - 2/3 through the program you have your advancement. This involves a ~15 page (mine was 18) proposal on a thesis project, and a 2 hour powerpoint presentation on the proposal. During this presentation, a committee of 5 professors ask you questions and judge your ability to be a scientist and whether they think your thesis project will be fruitful and provide you enough to publish and get a PhD. I passed mine :D It’s basically kind of tenure for me. They can’t fire me now- they've agreed to give me a doctorate, I just have to get the work done to get there.

III) Writing – I’m finally trying to get back into this. With my work schedule it has been very hard, but I’ve been doing my best to do so. I’ve been really out of it lately as far as writing goes, or creativity at all, but I’m working on that (more about this later).

IV) Blood of Tyrants (no spoilers) – I’m 1/3rd through the book. I really enjoy reading Novik’s writing again, and this book is better than the previous by a good deal, at least in writing and plot. There is one major thing I am taking issue with, but I won’t really discuss that. It’s mostly a peeve of knowledge, and won’t affect most I think. X3 Either way, there’s already been a scene I rather enjoy (not really spoilers? But I guess if you’re really overly sensitive about those, skip ahead)- Laurence meets a dragon, and assumes it male. The dragon lounges, and he notes, specifically, that he is mistaken. First it’s kinda hot because he’s noting a sexy feral dragon’s anatomy; second, it’s interesting, in suggesting that dragons of Novik’s universe have external bits, or at least, some external presentation of their gender. Curious to know more!

V) Monster’s U (SPOILERS) – I loved this movie. Absolutely ADORED it. It was great. See it if you haven’t had a chance, and it’s still showing around you. If not, DVD out in 2 months. NAB THAT SHIT UP. It’s awesome <3 Probably one of the better movie’s I have seen. WAY better than the first movie! But one of the reasons I really loved it (spoilers start here) is how Mike’s history plays out. As bad as he wants to be a scarer monster, and as hard as he tries, he just can’t do it. He isn’t meant to, he doesn’t have the ability. As a graduate student, and going through as an undergraduate… people can’t always do what they want. I’ve seen so many that are driven to do what they think they love, science in this case, but they just don’t have the ability. I’m very much of the belief that “I think I can” doesn’t cut it- no matter how hard a person might try, 99.9% of them can’t be an Olympic runner, no matter what. That really seems to be something our generation has been against, but I think it’s good to see it in action. And, most importantly… Mike uses his abilities to something he IS suited to, and has a great career and loves it. I like the lesson of “Find what your abilities are suited to, and have an amazing time doing that”.

VI) I gotta get some surgery in my face – So I’ve been having a lot of headaches recently. I finally saw a doctor about them, once they got bad enough to be paired with severe vertigo, which would happen during work often. I got worried that it might occur while driving, and… anyway, saw doctor. Turns out they are sinus headaches, since I have a very severely deviated septum. That middle part of my nose bows out to the left so severely that it limits my left nostril to 10-20% capacity and the turbulence from it messes with my sinuses and Eustachian tube. Since it is likely to grow more, and just bend further, making it worse, I need to get surgery. On Oct 3rd I’ll get surgery to trim it down, properly set it, widen my nostril, and properly clear out/open my sinuses on that side. Should be 1-2 weeks recovery. Woo~ X3 But life should be better afterward.

VII) Psychology – Finally, I’ve been having a few more medical problems- headaches, stomach issues, constantly being sleepy. While physical issues could explain a lot of this, my doctor was curious about my mental state, as that can greatly influence perceived pain and result in physical illness. With a rather saturated history of mental illness (Depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, etc) on my mother’s side, and paired with the fact that I’ve been super stressed- as a side note, getting a PhD in my degree has been compared to the distress experienced by losing your husband/wife- my doctor felt I should be evaluated by a psychologist. I saw one today; a PhD psychologist who specializes in stress/anxiety, family issues, gay/lesbian issues, and a few other things. Needless to say, the first three are perfectly applicable to me and I talked to her.

She rapidly determined that I suffer from depression (I’ve kinda … assumed this for ages, I suppose? But it’s good to know I have an actual disorder- I really dislike self-diagnosis, and I didn't want to, nor do I want to, use it as an excuse). I’m going to continue meeting with her to discuss techniques to help me deal with my stress and depression so I can start being a better friend and better to those I love. Some may notice I can be rather unresponsive at times, and others have mood swings/be rather grumpy and snappish. So, I’m going to do my best to be better about those things, and hopefully my psychologist can help me with these.

In addition, due to the depression, grumpiness, sometimes severe mood swings, and a history of bipolar disorder in my family, I’ll be getting evaluated by a psychotherapist soon to determine whether I suffer from bipolar disorder and whether medications are appropriate. For the most part, I am a fully functional adult- but I am often very depressed, no matter how happy I know I should be. And I’m getting kind of tired about it, and about being shitty to people I love. So… hopefully this helps. A part of depression is a loss of hobbies. I really hope this helps me get back into writing and knitting and art... I'd be much happier accomplishing those, for sure. <3

Heya everyone!

Been a while since I've updated eh? So a big tidbit of my life, I got married this past weekend. I think the knowledge has spread a bit, so I figure I might as well address it and let everyone know in a journal.

So, for the short version... I love more than anything ever, he's the best thing that has ever happened to my life. We'd been engaged for for and a half years, unable to marry in California because of Prop 8. When Prop 8 and DOMA were struck down recently, we decided to get married ASAP. Between a few factors, the major one being Anthrocon, it got delayed until this past weekend. On Saturday, July 27th, we got married :) Paperwork and everything is filed and hooray!


So for a bit more details... Sal and I have wanted to get married for a few years now. We'd considered going to other states to do so, or simply having a ceremony in the mean time and letting the legalities occur later. Unfortunately, time and money made this difficult. When DOMA and Prop8 were knocked down, we decided to go and get legally married as soon as possible. Back when getting married was leal in California for 4 months(?) or so, we were still too young in our relationship to do so. Then the chance was taken away. Considering this, we decided to get married before any legalities got in the way again (which, thank goodness, have all been knocked down so far. Take that you bigoted jerks). When we agreed upon this, we planned to go to the courthouse and get a legal wedding and little more.

Then we talked about doing something a little different; get legally married asap, with no ceremony, but we wanted something a little more personal. We asked to come down and marry us, and to our joy, she agreed. <3 Rev has been a very good, very close friend of ours for a long while now, and we both love her. We were so very happy for this, and planned for Rev and her mate, to come down and marry us, and to go out to dinner to celebrate. A simple, quick plan. But how rarely things go this way, eh? Our dinner ballooned; our roommates would of course be going, and then we told a few close friends we would be legally wed soon, and they wanted to join in. Soon enough, a couple dozen of our closest and best friends were coming for our wedding. It was simultaneously great! and terrifying. Our little legal wedding had become a wedding ceremony!

After AC we had the job of quickly organizing everything and getting stuff together. We were able to find a place to hold the ceremony in a few days, thanks in large part to and . It was actually held on campus, where I'm getting my PhD... XD But it worked out wonderfully! I decided to make all the food and cake myself. And ... then it was wedding!

Everything went wonderfully. At this point it's kind of a blur, really. Mind blowing, was wonderful, emotional... so rushed and so very crazy leading up to it! X3 Rev was wonderful enough to help me with the cake (almost all the decorating!), which was GORGEOUS and amazing! I loved it so much :) It was pretty tasty too! Pictures to come. Ended up making a giant slew of mexican food, most of which I was pretty damn happy with :D Managed make some of the best rice, carnitas, beans and shredded chicken I've ever managed, which worked out great for ... y'know, my wedding. Was exhausting, but we managed it!

Otherwise... it was a wonderful, amazing ceremony. <3 I can't thank our couple dozen friends enough for attending. Unfortunately, due to the limitations of time, space, and our money (holy crap it was expensive as was ;.; ) we could only have a few people there, a number of very close and wonderful friends- unfortunately, that left many of our close and wonderful friends out. A few have poked us with congratulations, and I couldn't appreciate it more. We have such good friends, and so many have expressed understanding on how the situation was. <3

So yeah... that's about everything. I have to give special thanks to Rev and Kiteless for performing the ceremony and assisting, and for taking so many pictures and video, for being amazing to us and being our cheauffer, and RV + and for making our night so amazing. They took care of everything for us, so it would go smoothly, and Sal and I didn't have to lift a finger after the wedding began. Along with everyone there, who took care of us, and supported us, and gave toasts to us... you're all the best. <3 Thank you all so much... this is the best part of my life so far <3

So I've been thinking about wrtiing this jorunal for a long while, and I think I'mf inally ready to do it. Unfortunately I don't generally like talking about these thigns IRL, so I've kinda had to think on this stuff for a while. I wanted to kind of work it out without too much outside input. Sal's an athiest, so this is kinda hard to discuss with him too.

First off I'd like to say this is about my own personal beliefs and spirituality- I don't think any one thing is right, or wrong, and I think everything is kind of personal as far as your own religion or whatever you want to have. So I don't want to push my own beliefs on anyone, and I dont' want you guys to try and do it to me. :D

That being said, I've been having somewhat of a spirtuality crisis... upsetedness? something like that for a while now. So I guess I need to start with my history. I was raised by a Christian and Catholic parent. My mom raised me pretty strongly Chrstian, with a knowledge on Catholosism and Jeudism (thanks to family in both). Around age 12 (with large thanks to the library) I became very interested in spirituality and started to investigate outside these religions- learning about Wicca, Taoism, Buddism, etc. Around 15-16 I decided that CHristianity wasn't really for me. I kind of distanced myself from organized religion in general. I didn't feel any one religion particulary fit me. Since then I became generally spiritual, and a kind of otherkin. I believed there was some greater force past the collective knowledge, whether it be a god or some general greater force in the world. Generally I regard all gods as different faccets of the same greater force, whether it's sentient or just the forces that keep our universe together. I don't claim this is right, so if you disagree, that's quite fine.

So for the longest time I've had this general belief in a spiritual greater force, undfined by any human religion or knowledge. Otherwise, I defined myself as otherkin. Dreamous was created off what I believe is my spirt guide, similar to Native American beliefs. Dreamous and I are the same soul, myself the physial half and he the spiritual. I believed I could see him, speak to him, and he would help guide my decisions. This is the spirituality I had for the past decade or so.

Since then things have kind of gone down hill. I realized this a little while ago. For those who don't know, I'm a scientist- a biologist, exactly. Many scientists are spiritual, while many are also very athiestic and beleive nothing occurs after this life. For the lack of evidence, pretty much. And I think that my career has worked like this. I find it hard to believe anything that has no evidence toward it all. This has in part come up because many non-Christians I know are so anti-Christian. It really bugs me to see someone say "Christianity is fucking retarded, the most stupid thing ever, how could they believe that. But I'm totally a 50 foot bronze dragon with glitter inside." (hyperbole, :p). This caused me to think about my own spirituality a lot. And since I've no evidence or any reason to believe my spirituality is right, I started to wonder about it.

This really came into effect within the past year. The reason I've noticed it was the passing of some close to me. A year and a half ago, passed away. It affected me strongly, but I had faith I would again see him some day- and that helped me through it a lot. But just a couple months ago, my dog of 14 years had to be put down. She was full of cancer and very sick, and being 14 years old... had to be put down. I sadly was not there, but my mom held the phone to my dog's ear so I could talk to her/listen to her. During this, I said to her, "I'll see you again soon." And then I started to cry, and just couldn't stop- and have been dying deep down inside every time I've thought of it since then. I realized recently I felt this way because I thought I was lying to her... I don't know I believe there's anything past this life any more. Just we're bags full of electricty and fluids, and when it ends... it ends.

So this has really brought me to thinking about my spirtuality and all a lot lately. Or more so, that maybe I don't have any- i no longer have any faith in anything spirtiual beyond what this current life is. More than anything, ti's a lack of an proof there is anything beyond what we are now- if any one religion can be defined as wrong... all them would be wrong.

So over the past few years, I've talked to and thought of Dreamous less. I don't think about my spiritual side, I just think about what is goign on and must be taken care of now. My job has been making this much worse- if this is the one ride I get, I've been so unhappy with what my life is becoming... it just doesn't seem worth it. When I am working so hard for this, trying to cure cancer, but.... it makes my own life so miserable, it seems really unhappy. I'm always stressed out, always feel like crap, exhausted, and it's really hurting my relationship sal... so I don't know. It's made me more and more stressed about this spirituality thing.

So.... yeah. That's where I'm at now. I've been considering changing my fursona again (being something other than dreamous entirely, or altering him- something genderless, sexless, wyrmlike.). This happened a few years ago, when I was considering my physical self vs spiritual side. I think it has been a slow degredation since I date my last mate, who was very into his otherkin side. Coupled with my progression as a scientist.....it's just been rough.


So these are just what I've been going trough. Any input or thoughts on this are very welcome... just what I wanted to get off my chest. More than anything, come back to and read, know what I've been thinking at this point in my life.

So yeah! The con was a blast. Way too many people to list out here, so... was just great seeing each and every one of you :D I know I missed a lot of you and was too busy to hang out sometimes, and I'm really. Cons are so busy ;.; But all in all-

- Thursday was the drive up! Left at 4 AM. HOLY FUCK we made it in 5.5 hours :o so cool. Also finally got to meet which was rad. He's a cool guy :o sal and I roomed with he and who stayed with us a bit before the con. Was pretty awesome. Spent the day getting everything ready and prepped, saw and , and had drinks. Was good! :D Also, was like.. the only time i got to see and . YOU BUMS.

- Friday was insane. Dealer's room just destroyed me. X3 Also would have been  Athus's 30th, which brought many mixed feelings. I am glad we were there to share it with others close to him. Miss you dragon. <3 Otherwise... was nice to see our friends and have some togetherness at dinner. Sorry to poor who was stuck next to me all dinner. X3 ADP that night. Hope my presentation was good enough (always worry about these things!) and had a mostly good time at it :)

- Saturday and Sunday were a blur of dealing and insanity. Had a lot of fun hanging out with people and running around :D Saturday I went to Frolic with . I was in Poot, he was in Gomi, and fuckin' SHIT was it awesome! Had a freaking blast! The dance Sunday was awesome too, met a cutie . Thanks for the dancin' man ;3 I was on the Writing About Alien Worlds panel Sunday. That was pretty cool, I wish I had been able to contribute better to it. Also Saturday was dinner with , and the gang. Again sorry for who's ear I talked off during dinner XD And thanks to the gang and and for Johnny Rocket's dinner Sunday :D

- Monday was leaving day. Quick breakfast and off we went. Got home in good time. Was a great con. Thank you everyone :)

Well digimon is obvious. I'd totally go for a V-mon. And of course, have the digi armor egg of courage (woo flamedramon <3) but I'd be torn between the digi egg of sincerity (Yasyamon, who is totally kick ass) or digi armor egg of light (Gargoylemon). Champion level would be strikedramon rather than XV-mon. :3

So that one is obvious. Now for my six favorite Pokemon/ideal team (not for competition because fuck that shit). I think I finally decided on a team, after these years xD
Trainer type - scientist (geneticist).
Team- Raichu, Golduck, Ivysaur, Scrafty, Mewtwo and Lugia.

Given if we were all actually in a Pokemon universe, I'm probably not that special awesome person to get Mewtwo or Lugia (though I hold out for Mewtwo! Like I said, scientist / geneticist trainer xD), I'd resort to-

Raichu, Golduck, Ivysaur, Scrafty, Gengar and Grovyle (pretty torn on this last slot, lots I like equally for it).

So yeah. Thats what I'd want. :o.... Okay really should stop distracting myself from work. XD
