I Have Not Fallen Off the Edge of the Map
Posted 13 years agoI know I've been rather inactive since FWA, though, as far as I can tell, I haven't fallen off the edge of the map yet! I know I'm missing a con report for RCFM 2012, and I promise that when I'm not so busy I'll get around to writing it!
So, what have I been up to? Well, it's simple. After FWA, I did more of my normal behavior, which roughly involves staying as far away from the social side of the internet as possible. I've been slowly returning to just using FurryMUCK as my primary online communication proxy.
As I said, I went to RCFM. After RCFM, I packed up and moved to Arizona... like... literally the next day or something like that... ... That took a bit, and now here I am, up late like normal and doing work like normal and generally not talking to people online... but that's because I've been busy. Sometime during the move I lost my pencil, so don't be expecting much art until I get a replacement for that (though, my warning about that should be clear right about now).
As far as plans for the future go, I'm gonna continue doing work for the computer thing. I've got a personal project that I'm currently blowing through (except today... ... I haven't worked on it today) that I'll tell you more about once it's closer to being done. Once I've got more money (so I can relax a bit and actually buy stuff) I'm gonna learn Russian. I've thought to myself "I should learn Russian." or "Wouldn't it be cool if I knew Russian." many times over several years, so that's a good sign I want to learn it.
I also got a commission at RCFM whose upload is blocked on access to a scanner. Se la vie.

FWA 2012 Con Report
Posted 13 years agoHi! Did you know that, just a few days ago, the super-wonderfully-funtastic Furry Weekend Atlanta e-- oh, it ended /when/? What day is today? Why am I wearing this tribble suit?
In all seriousness, I caught con crud and was sick right after we got home. I have excellent roommates, and they kept me healthy and fed (when I was feeling a bit too dizzy to go out for food). However, that put a dent in my memory to do things like: write the FWA con report. It totally spaced me (you can understand, right?), so here I am, doing it belatedly. Also, I am not wearing a tribble suit, nor do I own one. You may close your mouth a bit.
Unlike normal con reports, I'm doing away with the per-day things, simply because I couldn't remember what happened even /with/ the schedule block. Instead, it will be ordered by theme.
===== DEALER DEN =====
Wandered around the Dealer's Den much less this time than normal, though I did still make a few laps. Attached to it was the CCI room, where there were some delightfully adorable little cats. I don't remember their ages, but they were little, and _NOT_ housecats! You could feel the d'aww emanating from them.
===== ART =====
I didn't get much in the way of art this time. I got a commission from
rabbi-tom, and we chatted for a bit about stuff and Furry and whatnot. He is a pretty interesting person to talk to, and I am glad I got to meet him finally. Will remember to talk with more next time.
===== STUFFING FACE =====
Alongside the normal things that you stuff your face with, I also stuffed it with music of Matthew Ebel and the non-PC-glory of that angry gryphon dude (or
2gryphon, whoever comes first).
Matthew Ebel's concert was good. Played stuff off his new album, which was enjoyable, and comedic when he referred t[KERNEL PANIC HERE]o the feathers on his head. 2 was a gryphon, so what's new? The show was pretty funny.
===== DANCE =====
I didn't. However, I did stand in the dance room for long periods of time getting pounded by loud dance music.
===== RACCOONS =====
I kept running into, past, and alongside
drummingraccoon. Funny how they show up everywhere.
=====KERNEL PANICS =====
Excuse the con report, it got interrupted by a kernel panic. Firefox nightly brought down the video driver.

Posted 14 years agoIn order to celebrate the coming of winter, I have changed my avatar to this lush, green thing that kinda looks like an eye.
It is a layered image of 6 photographs that were taken with a 20 second shutter speed that were then transformed to mostly green... The full photo is of a plant; this is highly zoomed (>3000px -> 800px), then shrunk down to meet FA's avatar size limitations.
Reason for photo was I needed to make something "rococo" for art history, and I didn't want to draw it. Doubting I'll post the original later... it has nothing to do with furry, unlike the last photo that came out well (Unintentional Pokemon Fan Fiction).

The preferred way of writing my name is जॄओविनू, which is read "Dr'owin". The Latin string "Drurowin" is how I typically transliterate it, but this leads to much confusion. To my defense, the original D&D character name was "Drurowin", and I still pronounced it "Dr'owin"... I think I did that to mess with the group members.
The script it's written in is called Devanagari, and is one of the scripts used in India.
The name is meant to be easily said by one of the more "primitive" animals, like lions and dogs. If you say it "Drew-row-win", you're saying it wrong. I know that's how it's spelled, but it's wrong! Usernames can't typically be written in Unicode, and few services allow punctuation in them. Plus, using strange characters in handles will likely annoy people enough to get me shot.
I have also written it using a vocular r (versus a vocular rr), which is almost right. That way looks like जृओविनू, and is also wrong. The ``r'' sound is hard, but when written with a vocular r, the correct sound does not come across.

Star Trek (I know) Con℥Trip Report
Posted 14 years agoFirst off... dear god, I had 131 messages on FA... ... I guess that's what I get for not having internet access for 10 days... I am working on going through them all, but I still haven't even looked at submissions...
Ok...
The drive out to Mesa Verde was uneventful, except for this buck that
I didn't get a good look at that /almost/ decided to take a jaunt into
the road and gave my sister heart palpitations...
Mesa Verde was nice. We got to set the tent up in the dark, and then
had a Comedy of Sleeping Bags, since dad and sister couldn't figure
out how to get them set up (the sleeping bags... ...).
I got nicely sunburnt the first day, and the second day got to listen
to dad and sister rant and rave about how bad it was... even though it
wasn't nearly as bad as they thought... I got some pictures, but they
aren't really furry, unless you count the couple few with me in
them...
The drive to the Grand Canyon was beautiful, and I think I got some
decent pictures of some buffalo... will have to check and find a good
one to post.
The Grand Canyon itself was very big. I got pictures, again not furry
except for me... We went on a day hike down the North Kaibab trail to
the bridge about halfway down (so 2000 ft of elevation loss?), and
then I steamed back up in about the same time. There's a warning that
says to not attempt going /up/ the canyon at the same rate as you went
down... Whoever wrote that sign is crazy, because they attempted
it... ... and it's really hard to do. Trust me, I tried. I had
leftover stamina (but not much) at the top, so I guess it worked...
Ok... the drive into Las Vegas was uneventful, and the hotel was a
casino... and then a hotel... ... just like last time I was in
Vegas...
Ok... con report...
The dealer's room was pretty meh... mostly people selling old stuff
that they had hung onto. It was like a garage sale with a few original
items.
Most all the "panels" weren't panels at all, and were in fact an Actor
Meet and Greet followed by Q&A... which mostly consisted of
{{OHMAIGODSQUALINGFANGIRLEEEEEEE}} type stuff...
Nimoy's thing was good... Takei _COMPLETELY_ embarrassed John Cho (the
new Sulu actor) in his introduction... (and I just realized I'm
wearing headphones but no music's playing... one
moment.... .... ....all better) and the Kirk-Picard-{{female captain
who I can't remember, sorry}} thing was good as well...
First Con:: excellent -- dad and sister both enjoyed it, dad more than
sister because he was the Star Trek fan in the group
Furry Compare:: mediocre -- There was almost no original art, and only
a couple events worth going to on Saturday and Sunday. Half the
scheduled events had a fee attached... between $50-200... and the
entire con was a Gratuitous Marketing Portion from the
sponsors... ... but that's what happens when you have a For-Profit
organization running things...
The drive home... ... was long... It takes roughly 13 hours to get
from Vegas to Denver, and we arrived back at around 1 AM... If you
have never sat in a car for 13 hours, I highly suggest you don't... it
gets very uncomfy after a while...

Drive -> Mesa Verde
Tent camp there for a few days and do what you do when at Mesa Verde.
Drive -> Grand Canyon
Stay at a cabin-y thing on the north side for a couple days to see stuff and not fall in. I am a lion, not a dodo...
Drive -> Las Vegas
Dad decided that he really wanted to go to the {{drumroll}} Star Trek convention there, and got tickets for me, him, and sister for a couple days. I'm sure I can find /something/ to do there... but I may degenerate to walking in circles in the dealer room... ... or whatever they have at this event...
I'm guessing a much different demographic from furry conventions, but I'll do a con review of it anyways when I get back...
Oh... I am betting on low to no internet access during this trip until LV, so I will be bona-fide gone from FA for the next week... see you on the other side.

Dad thought it would be cute to walk the dog without a leash at about 9 PM... which means that the dog got hit by a skunk while chasing said skunk through the neighbor's front yard.
Now... the dog managed to rub most of the stuff off by the time we got home, and I discovered yet another use for Dr. Bronner's Crazy Label Magical Many Use Soap... and that is drowning out skunk smell while you wash the dog.
Ok, fast forward a few hours...
I went downstairs to get a drink, and dad asked if the dog was scratching at the door to be let in. She was... so dad told me I should _BRING_ _THE_ _DOG_ _INSIDE_ so she could stink up my bathroom... I told him it was a "terrible idea".
Dad told me to get the dog a treat, then, since I was going to be cruel and make him be kept up by pleading for the inside... I grabbed a treat and see the clock... 2:57 AM..., and as I was walking back to the door, I felt something, and said, "I feel a disturbance in the force...". Moments later, I hear a clanging sound, and turn the light on to find the dog retreating back away from the house... in this hobbly fashion.
Guess what I smell... with greater and greater strength?...
I tell dad that under no circumstance am I opening that door, and he gets the clue that something has gone terribly wrong... again...
So, after I attempt to abandon him to clean the dog /again/ by pretending to fall asleep and fail, I am outside at 3 AM cleaning the dog... ... again...
Oh... and now I can smell skunk in my room...
So I go downstairs to find dad has been busy cleaning off the /house/... the dog is nowhere to be seen. We eventually coax the dog out from way back to get washed... and the dog smells worse this time.
We pass the time outside again by loudly talking of skunks, dogs, those two combined, and how it would stink (pun probably not intended) if /we/ got sprayed while cleaning the dog... Fortunately, it was an uneventful washing.
Here's the important part...
A week ago, dad made a comment about how he saw this cute little baby skunk foraging around outside the front window... "Oh, it must be going after the birdseed." He was all very flattered and found the whole affair adorable. If anything, I think I've discovered some things about skunk smell...
1:: It smells like burning rubber.
2:: Like any smell, you can get used to it.
3:: I think it can go through rubber...
So what does the inside of the house smell like now?
My bedroom:: Skunk Afterglow (I live on the opposite side of the house from where it happened)
Bathroom:: a little worse
Living room:: worse than bathroom
Kitchen:: ok
Basement:: normal (there's skunk smell, but it's being filtered in such a way that I don't find it disgusting)
Garage:: bad
Dog (in garage):: real bad
Dad's bedroom:: Skunk smell is so concentrated it actually smells nauseatingly sweet...
So... I've got a headache now because it's 5:21 AM and I can't sleep because of Skunk Afterglow... I fear we are somehow connected in a web...
PS:: If you want to use this story to convince someone why /not/ to let wild skunks live at your house, go ahead. Tell them my nose sent it.
MORNING EDIT:: Well... ... morning for me... 2 PM for you... (MST) Dad's room no longer smells like a biohazard.
Dad thought it would be cute to walk the dog without a leash at about 9 PM... which means that the dog got hit by a skunk while chasing said skunk through the neighbor's front yard.
Now... the dog managed to rub most of the stuff off by the time we got home, and I discovered yet another use for Dr. Bronner's Crazy Label Magical Many Use Soap... and that is drowning out skunk smell while you wash the dog.
Ok, fast forward a few hours...
I went downstairs to get a drink, and dad asked if the dog was scratching at the door to be let in. She was... so dad told me I should _BRING_ _THE_ _DOG_ _INSIDE_ so she could stink up my bathroom... I told him it was a "terrible idea".
Dad told me to get the dog a treat, then, since I was going to be cruel and make him be kept up by pleading for the inside... I grabbed a treat and see the clock... 2:57 AM..., and as I was walking back to the door, I felt something, and said, "I feel a disturbance in the force...". Moments later, I hear a clanging sound, and turn the light on to find the dog retreating back away from the house... in this hobbly fashion.
Guess what I smell... with greater and greater strength?...
I tell dad that under no circumstance am I opening that door, and he gets the clue that something has gone terribly wrong... again...
So, after I attempt to abandon him to clean the dog /again/ by pretending to fall asleep and fail, I am outside at 3 AM cleaning the dog... ... again...
Oh... and now I can smell skunk in my room...
So I go downstairs to find dad has been busy cleaning off the /house/... the dog is nowhere to be seen. We eventually coax the dog out from way back to get washed... and the dog smells worse this time.
We pass the time outside again by loudly talking of skunks, dogs, those two combined, and how it would stink (pun probably not intended) if /we/ got sprayed while cleaning the dog... Fortunately, it was an uneventful washing.
Here's the important part...
A week ago, dad made a comment about how he saw this cute little baby skunk foraging around outside the front window... "Oh, it must be going after the birdseed." He was all very flattered and found the whole affair adorable.
