My side of the Kaiju Combat mess.
Posted 6 years agoThe popular assumption is that Kaiju Combat was considered a "successful" Kickstarter, ruined by one individual: me. I suppose it helps disappointment by placing the blame on one person, especially when that person is in a community that's demonized as "a bunch of social rejects" by outsiders. And it certainly makes the story that much more believable when it's a "demonized" individual.
The truth is, Kaiju Combat was NOT a successful Kickstarter. Far from it. The first time the project launched, the guy running it asked for a full million dollars without anything as far as a prototype or an engaging video.
But I kicked in anyway. For a $500 pledge, you could work with him and his concept artist to produce a monster that, if voted in by the Kaiju Combat Kickstarter community, could end up being a character in the game. Plus, Duncan a notoriously large, monster-sized troublemaking kangaroo, so that'd be pretty fun to see in action.
Ultimately, $500 for a full-character that could potentially end up being 3D rendered, rigged, and playable in a fighting game is a pretty damn good investment if you ask me.
The benefit to Kickstarter is that you're just pledging the money. If it never gets to the goal, you never get billed for the money. Kickstarter fails, it costs you nothing. And boy did this Kickstarter fail. I could be wrong I don't think it even cracked six figures the first time around, and I think it was even canceled half-way through. Again, I don't remember.
When it failed, I got contacted by the creator. "Hey, we're going to restart the Kickstarter at a lower goal." I'm paraphrasing. "We need to build our roster before we do. Wonder if you're still interested in being a part. Let's chat about your character."
And so we did. Seemed to go well. I totally get Duncan isn't meant to be taken seriously. He's a goddamn giant green kangaroo. He'd work better as a Saturday Morning cartoon than a monster fighter. But as we talked, the creator eyes lit up with ideas like scavaging for items in the middle of the fight, plucking up cartoon bombs or boomerangs or whatever. Sounds great! Here's my $500, let's make it happen.
My first clue of Duncan's unpopularity was my initial conversation with Matt Frank. He really, really didn't like Duncan. Because this was all over videochat I don't remember what he was trying to change or add, but I was like...huh. Yeah. Hmm. Nah. The way the conversation went, it felt like it was Matt's way or the highway. And I've never liked working with artists who don't want to work with you.
So after this call, I sent an email to the creator. "Matt's not digging Duncan, I'm out. I'll just support the project as a normal Kickstarter pledge." I'm paraphrasing, but the response: "No, stay, I'll talk to Matt, Duncan will be a fun addition." So I stayed.
I think the Kickstarter launched before I got my character and design sheet. I didn't write the description, but boy did the Kaiju Combat forums really notice the mention of "No visible genitalia." I think he was trying to be silly, but it had the negative effect when people started dissecting why Duncan is stupid and should never be included in anything Kaiju related.
The forums were half "Ha, that's silly, Duncan's great" and half "WTF??! He's just a kangaroo!!" The vocal half was the WTF.
Still, no guarantee I'd be added to the game, and all it would take is me not getting voted in. Of course I'm gonna ask my friends and followers to vote me in by pledging for the game, earning the right to vote for their favorite characters. So here comes the furry crowd to "poison" the Kaiju fans' project.
You guys came through with Kickstarter pledges and votes. and Duncan got into the game in the first round. He was one of the first to be 3D rendered, one of the first to be animated...clearly someone on the team prioritized Duncan.
Making video games is a very, very slow process, and I just never followed what was going on with Kaiju Combat's development. There's a card game being made? Ok, cool. Someone's 3D printing the character models? All right, I'll buy one. They have to add "Colossal" to the name now cuz of Wizards of the Coast? Sure, makes sense.
Every time I peeked into the forums, there was something non-gaming being talked about. It was a mess. What's the status, when is it coming out, which characters are playable? Shrug emoji.
I stopped checking in, it felt like a waste of time. No big surprise, there hasn't been any movement on the game since 2016. I found a trailer that had Duncan animated, hey that's cool...still wicked rough, but at least I know he's been animated!
And then I learn the tall tale that I'm the sole reason the game failed. Pretty funny stuff. But it took on a life of its own, probably from one person spreading the story, and everyone just believing it. Why wouldn't fans of the game believe it, Duncan's a furry, which means he's a social degenerate, right?
To all my fellow social degenerates: I am sorry you put your money into this failed project. I have no regrets on my $500 loss, I got a Matt Frank original and a few animated gifs of Duncan uppercutting a shark. I consider this a win.

What was your big influencial "scene"?
Posted 8 years agoOne of my most favorite asks on twitter was having folks post screen captures from the cartoons or artwork that influenced their particular fandom "tastes."

Everyone's got their thing: being giant, being inflatable, transforming into something else...getting fat, muscular or whatever.
And I'm *sure* there was something you saw as a kid on TV, in movies, or on the internet that made you...well, pause and go "holy shit that's awesome." Or, way more than that. You catch my drift. *nod*
Click on the above link and you'll find my favorite influences. What are yours? Time to fess up.

"Hey Duncan, why do you get drawn so damn much?"
Posted 8 years agoYou see me a lot. I know it. Every time a picture of the giant green kangaroo gets posted I half wonder how many people out there are just sick to death of seeing him out and about.
The first one is easy: every piece gives me a real thrill. I'm sure I don't have to explain it, I imagine everyone gets that feeling when receiving art from a talented individual, no matter if it was a gift or an actual commissioned piece.
More specifically, someone spent a whole lot of time and effort and talent to do something specifically for me. It flatters me enormously.
Second, I love giving my friends that same thrill. You'll notice that many, probably the majority, of any Duncan piece also includes someone else. Either it's a close friend or a character that appeals to me. I very rarely commission "just Duncan" pics because, let's face it...solo outings are boring. Things are more interesting when you involve someone in your shenanigans.
And it gets the creative juices flowing coming up with scenarios that feature other peoples' "things." It's not just about being a giant troublemaker. Most of the time I commission these things with characters out of the blue, without asking, mostly because I feel people trust me, my ideas, and the fact that it's all in good fun.
I also very much like supporting artists. While I'll graciously accept the gift when someone wants to draw for me, I never ask for art I'm not willing to pay for. I'm fortunate that I've got enough green to make these pics happen.
I know with the amount of art out there it might seem like I'm flashing fat stacks of cash, but honestly I think, sometimes, I'm stealing from artists the way they value their craft in the fandom. More often than not what artists do is WAY MORE than what it costs. Take advantage of it!
And there's always that "what goes around, comes around." I've certainly noticed that the more recognizable the character, the more it gets drawn. You wanna get art of your OC? Buy art! Get yourself out there, and then...well, no guarantees. Just know that the more art of you there is, the better idea people have of who you are and what you're interested in. It's a nice icebreaker to make friends and have something to talk about.
Ultimately, do this for me: Think I'm full of myself with all this art? Hit me. You got the comment field to let me have it.

Just FYI...
Posted 8 years agoI'm told I'm on the large side.
Looking for roommate. San Francisco Bay Area.
Posted 9 years agoJust broadcasting this out across places that folks watch me.
Nice "new digs" opportunity near San Francisco for anyone looking.
I'm hunting around for a responsible, chill individual to fill a room of a three bedroom house in the suburbs of San Francisco. This is in a quiet and private cul de sac, walking distance to all sorts of shopping, food, and bus/train that hits many of the big Silicon Valley cities in the Bay Area.
Message me for all the details if you or someone you know might be interested. This isn't a "cheap living" opportunity, so please do a search on the rental market of the San Francisco Bay Area before inquiring for more details.

How not to be annoying to commissioners (repost)
Posted 9 years agoLooks like there's a resurgence of "how to not piss off artists" posts going around, and a few people found a rebuttal I did about five years ago: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2155815/ , So I thought I'd bubble it back up to the surface since I never really update my journal these days.
Here you go. How not to be annoying to commissioners.
Don't offer commissions if you don't have the time. I'm certainly aware that "artists have lives." But if you're going to take on a backlog of work -- and take money up front -- you are now on the hook. And if you sit on that stack for months and months (and in my case, I have a few that's going on YEARS) you deserve the bad reputation. It's not nearly as much if you take reservations without a deposit, but even still -- don't offer the work if you can't manage your time.
Don't remove commissioned art from your gallery without telling us. I'm only saying this from my experience. I don't use my FurAffinity account as my own personal gallery for Duncan artwork -- with the exception of avatars and profile images, if I didn't do it, I don't upload it. When the artist uploads it, I favorite. But for some reason, artists tend to get all emo about old work and simply decide that they don't want that commissioned piece mucking up their gallery. So now I'm left with "gray X" Image has been removed from the gallery" in my favorites. Unless I do a lot of investigating, I'll never know which of the pieces was removed, and it may be months later when I'll realize a specific image I paid for is no longer on FurAffinity...and I never saved a copy to my local computer.
Don't get bitchy if we do ask "What's up?" Especially if you ask for money up front. If I have to fork over money just to reserve a spot in your coveted list of Iron Artists or commissions, you better believe that as time goes by I'm going to wonder what happened to that cash. Again, I know how the system works: if I pester the artist beyond their comfort zone, they may not enjoy working on my piece, and I may get a less than ideal final image. I'll give you a nice cushion of time because I know that there's more going on in the world than just furry art -- but don't snap when I send off a nice little note to poke you into finding out where my pretzel money is.
Don't always expect praise. You may do the job requested, and it may end up being merely adequate. I'll certainly give thanks to work, but sometimes paid work isn't all that amazing. I'm polite and considerate, but again, I'm realistic -- if I'm not floored I'm certainly not going to shower you with energetic compliments telling you how amazing it is. I'll thank you and proudly display your art at the bear minimum. Do a fantastic job and you'll hear how I feel. But that's entirely subjective. Feel free to "wow" me to get that.
And there you go. Easy as that!

Let me have it.
Posted 9 years agoI noticed I haven't touched this journal thing in over a half-year, so I thought I'd put something more "evergreen" (pun intended) up in its place.
Why do you follow me? What do you think of me? I'm actually curious, I'm just a giant green troublemaker that likes tossing the bucks at artists to draw more giant green troublemaking. For good OR bad, I'd love to know what makes you want to poke your head on my page or watch me on Twitter...or what makes you grit your teeth in annoyance whenever you see a green kangaroo pop up in your submissions.
(if you don't want to go "on the record" with a comment that other people can read, shoot me a note instead).

I'll be in Chicago for Midwest Furfest
Posted 10 years agoIf you're going to be at the convention in December and like seeing giant green things...well, you're in luck!
You'll definitely catch a glimpse of me there, and when you do...flag me down and say hello! And cuz I'll be hanging around the biggest, fattest dinosaur around, I'll be easy to track.
Seriously, I'm (mostly) harmless at conventions, so don't be afraid to wave your arms wildly to get my attention.

Just to be clear.
Posted 11 years agoMy last journal wasn't gauging whether I should go "adult." That ain't me. Never gonna happen.
I was just curious if there were others out there that sorta thumb their nose at Duncan art simply because I don't do the mature art thing. As in, "Duncan could be sooooo much cooler if he did naughty things."
This is probably the most adult thing you're ever gonna see of me:

Officially, anyway.

Posted 11 years agoIs there anyone out there that takes issue to the fact that most, if not all Duncan pics are made for "General Audiences"?
I remember pissing someone off for commenting in some mature artwork that artists have drawn of other characters. Apparently it makes me a hypocrite for looking at adult art but not commissioning adult art.
People are weird...

You have an assumption about me? Tell me what it is and I'll tell you if you're right or wrong.
I'd prefer genuine responses than snarky and jokey ones, but furries gotta be furries I guess.

Gimmie a shout! Why did you decide to click on that +Watch thing on my FA account? Love to get perspective!

THE HOLIDAYS
Posted 12 years agoIf anyone is into the holiday spirit just to get stuff, you need to grow the heck up. You're no longer eight years old.
This is the time to experience the joy of doing something for others, not to expect something's going to be done for you. Seriously, get your priorities in gear if your hand is out and you're saying, "It's Christmas time. Gimmie."
This is the one time of the year where you can give someone a little token of appreciation without the awkwardness of them asking "why did you give me this?" It's the holidays, that's why.
My stance for the month of December: if you treat yourself to something, treat someone else to something. Did you buy yourself the latest movie on blu-ray? Buy a football and donate it to Toys for Tots. I mean it. Think about the little smile you'll bring someone because you tossed a ten dollar toy in the bin.
Can't afford to buy Christmas Cheer for someone? Make some cookies. Do an hour of charity. Come up with some creative way to bring a little thrill to someone who'd appreciate the gesture.
So says Santa Roo.

Get your very own Mini-Me.
Posted 12 years agoNot you. Me.

I come in Mini-Me (4 inches) and Super Mini-Me. (2 inches).
Better pictures to come when they actually take better photos of it.
