Get your Character in my Comic
General | Posted 10 years agoIt seems that I lost a couple patrons over on https://www.patreon.com/Dustmeat and I need to bring that number back up. Since I don't expect you to give me money for nothing, I am offering cameo shots in my upcoming Candi comic pages. It is in a restaurant so you can be a diner or staff. I have five slots. Here are your choices:
$10 a month:
Diner, no speaking role Taken
Staff, no speaking role
$20 a month:
Waitress or waiter who speaks
Diner who speaks Two Slots Filled
$50 a month:
The cook, with speaking role and looking pissed off.
Please consider this opportunity to appear in a Candi Comic and remember that you will be in a humorous restaurant situation and food may get on your character. If you want to be the dishwasher you will have to wear rubber gloves. If you want to be a waiter or waitress you cannot be bigger than a large human, and no wings. Likewise the cook will have to be normal size and not winged either. Diners can be whatever you like since the customer is always right. No porn.
There are three upcoming pages with these characters, two of which will appear this month. And not to give too much away but...there will be color.
Thank you!

Geeking Out over Star Wars
General | Posted 10 years agoSPOILERS OBVIOUSLY
So I saw the new movie a month after everyone else did, but now I have a lot of questions. In particular there are some strange characters like Rey who are not really explained...who are her parents? Why is she left on Jakku with no one to love her? Is she the daughter of Luke Skywalker? How did she learn to fight so well? Clearly Rey is strong in the Force so we assume she had good lineage but is that just because Star Wars makes everyone related to Darth Vader? Why is she so important?
Then Rey has the chaotic vision when she touches Luke's old light saber and it was too fast for me when I saw it in the theatre but I looked it up on YouTube and it appears that she witnessed a lot of people being killed when she was young and the Knights of Ren were there with weapons. As one of the men approaches her to inflict more damage, a red light saber impales him from behind and it's a young Kylo Ren who has saved her life. Why? Then she is on Jakku and a transport ship is flying away. Who dropped her off? On YouTube I learned that this was a First Order ship, so did Kylo Ren drop Rey off on a desert planet? That would explain a few things, like why he singles her out later in the film. He knows her from way back when he saved her life. And why would he do that?
At the end of the film she flies all the way to some remote island where Luke has been hiding to return his light saber and... talk to him? When she and Luke clap eyes on eachother there is a Moment. My thinking is that she is his daughter or why else would we linger on this scene with no dialogue? Jedi knights are not supposed to marry or breed but we all KNOW they have done this before. It would also explain why she is Special and why Kylo Ren cared enough to spare her life and drop her onto a remote dune planet. Rey is Kylo's first cousin. There will be no romance, I hope.
Lastly who is Snoke?

Furry Fiesta in Dallas
General | Posted 10 years agoI have just booked hotel and plane reservations for my trip to Dallas in March. Since I will not be at Further Confusion this year, here is your chance to see me at a convention :) Of course you can come up and say Hi but I will not have a table in the dealer's den...so maybe in artists' alley this time. We shall see. Really, I am just going there to socialize and draw in people's sketchbooks so if you see me do ask for a drawing. I am not bitey. You will recognize me because I look so completely different from every other woman there. Or not.
Look forward to seeing all my Texas pals!

New Year New Plans
General | Posted 10 years agoSo I have some commissions to complete and that should wrap up the list for some time...but I want to focus my art on things like Candi Bunny pages. You may have noticed that the number of comic pages has been piling up and that leads to another book being published which is The Plan. We will have hard copy comic books to sell once gain, yay! It gives me considerable pleasure to make Candi come to life in all her hard-bitten glory and I hope that you the readers appreciate her too. Jarlidium Press would be the lucky publisher of course. It will be my fifth book printed and that is my goal for 2016.
Wish me luck! I hope that this coming book will be as cute as the previous :)

Year in Review
General | Posted 10 years agoThis is the sanitized version for the public.
January- More drama at work, but I forgave people.
February- My cat goes to the vet. Mystee visits. Griffin logo is stolen again.
March- Diane becomes my friend. Lots of insomnia.
April- Cousin Curtis visits. Paint Nite with the gals.
May- Drain cleaner in my eye emergency. Frank got a job. Brenda got married.
June- Califur with Roz. Doug dies. Trip to Colorado to see my sister.
July- Doug's cremation fund is a success.
August- My Patreon begins. Begin drawing dogs all the time.
September- Uncle Doug visits. Heat stroke.
October- Susan at work dies. Oma moves down here. Back injury.
November- My first time teaching painting. Physical therapy.
December- Jury duty. Muse concert with Roz.
So in all 2015 was not what I expected and the lesson here is to make the most of your time while you are still able. No excuses! Go and do.

Dog Project
General | Posted 10 years agoThis is my own personal quest. No, I do not own a dog. For months I have been working on drawing dogs- and there are piles upon piles of sketches to prove this. My aim is to draw them perfectly and from memory, which I do with a ballpoint pen at work when I am bored. The dogs I draw are of all types but my aim here is to draw the Archetypical Dog. You know it in your head, but here are the Rules:
-normal size and shape of dog
-no deformities
-no docked tails or ears
-no bizarre features period
-any natural color or pattern
-ears are allowed to be droopy or perky
-small amount of muzzle sagging allowed, but not preferred
-short hair
-dewclaws on forelegs only
-NO bearded muzzles
-Collars are allowed but NO clothing.
So if it looks like a pariah dog or a trim hound it counts. Retrievers usually work for this. I am looking for the type of dog you would find in Ancient Rome or Ancient India or whatever runs stray. In my searching I have learned what nature sees as the default dog but I am not strict on that. It should look like the feral packs I saw running around in San Antonio Texas but without injuries.
No one is paying me to draw these, like I said it is a labor of love. Much like the cow-drawing obsession of 2004, which people may have found irritating but I was inspired. So if you don't hate my dog sketches I plan on uploading more here, and eventually I will settle on the One Perfect Dog or something. Who knows. But if things work out this could end up being a lot of fun.

The Grasshopper Lies Heavy
General | Posted 10 years agohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_M.....he_High_Castle
I need books that drop me into an alternate reality and leave me blinking and wanting more, so it is with delight that I am reading The Man In the High Castle by Philip K. Dick. Books like this give me so much more value because I can spin my imagination around the idea and sink hours of daydreaming in that world. And why am I only finding out about this now?
Because Amazon Instant Video has a television series based on it.
So would the world be like if the Germans and Japanese won the War? I would be living in the Pacific States and under one totalitarian government and my friends back east would be living under Nazi rule- according to this novel. Lucky Colorado gets to be free of course. (This is an alternate history written in the early 60's so Japan is not technologically advanced, but Germany is sending rockets to Mars.) A banned book that shows what would happen if America and the Allies won WW2 is called The Grasshopper Lies Heavy and it is not terribly optimistic. In the television series that book is replaced with newsreel films that people find. But where from? It's just so juicy.
No spoilers, I am only halfway through reading.

Back Attack
General | Posted 10 years agoMy life has come to resemble a King of the Hill episode, specifically the one wherein Hank hurts his back at work and has to take time off. Most everything was going so well, and now my biggest accomplishment is getting up from a chair. I walk with a cane and it's not sexy to behold. So guess what, I have plans for Halloween and costumes and Oktoberfest that might have to Not Happen. Because my new favorite words are "HSSSS!" (sharply inhaled via teeth) and the staccato "Ah! AH! AH!" that accompanies any bending motion.
In fact, I may have to draw a picture of this...

Family Leave
General | Posted 10 years agoI will be gone for a few days ( family reasons ) and there will be no computer or art supplies where I am headed. So commissions and comic pages will have to wait, sorry :/ But once this is over there will be new material, oh yes.
Thanks for your patience.

What I learned from doing Dog Portraits
General | Posted 10 years agoI began drawing dogs all the time at work, and so people started requesting certain breeds and I would go home and sketch a pile of retrievers and it was fun. So I decided to join the Pet Portrait community on Facebook and see if I could expand my audience. Surely it's not much different from furry art, right? Here is what I learned:
Most people doing pet portraits are tracing photographs. I was appalled at first but then I saw what happened when they did not trace and they made a lot of mistakes. Also, it's pretty much just head shots and no bodies. Full color and usually painted, what they want is photo-realistic detail and NOT cartoons. They are not wild about inked drawings like what I do. They rarely do backgrounds. Lord, I thought pet people wanted to see more than just heads but I was wrong...they will even stop drawing after the neck and leave the head floating in space.
I am not trying to be negative, but I really thought it would be more like furry art. I honestly expected artists to be trained in drawing like us in the furry community and now I realize how much harder furry art is to create. Copying all those dogs photos was SO easy I would whip them out in a couple hours...but it felt wrong to copy so I began adding expressions and cartoony stuff. Drawing the body from scratch, that sort of thing- because in furry art we are used to doing that. We expect more.
One thing I did teach myself was how to draw dog breeds better. The muzzles and noses and all that, I had been making it very simple before. Lazy. Plus those paws with all the pads, tricky. Now I can draw dogs and I plan on making more of them but I want to do it my way. More expression and body language, more cartoony. That is more difficult but I want to improve until I get it right. The pet portrait community will have to get used to me :)

Yes, it finally happened! I am still trying to figure this all out and get this page to look good, but essentially this is like a tip jar for people who want to see me create comic pages. No one pays for pages of Ninevah and Candi in their own world, so I wanted to let people have a chance to help.
Let me know if my page looks weird, I have never done this before.

Rumors
General | Posted 10 years agoBack when I worked at a college in Texas, I used to feed a pack of stray dogs during my lunch break. I would walk over the campus with a bag of dog food, headed to where the strays lived on the old base. My co-workers never saw the dogs, just me carrying a bag of Purina and so a rumor got started that I was eating the dog food myself because I was poor. Also, according to this rumor, I was embarrassed by this so I had to hide it by walking off campus to eat in secret. Hilarious.
So what rumors (stupid or otherwise) have you heard about yourself?

Raising funds for the Cremation of Doug Winger
General | Posted 10 years agoDoug's nephew posted this:
I don't really know what all to say about it all. Everyone has been working hard on getting Doug's final affairs in order and it looks like everyone is kind of strapped for cash regarding the cremation. Put bluntly, we need about 700 $. My mother has a GoFund me here ( http://www.gofundme.com/yu8r5fw ) If you could reshare/signal boost, I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you all for reading at least.
EDIT: WOW, you guys! Thanks so much ::heart::

The Secret to Happiness?
General | Posted 10 years agoWhat is your personal secret to happiness? It has to be based on your own experience and not something you read in a book, but please share. If you are not happy, it's OK not to answer. I am just looking for insight.
Doug Winger is gone.
General | Posted 10 years agoFor two weeks Doug struggled to breathe in the critical care unit, and this morning they took him off the machines. At 1:20 p.m. he passed away, his heart and lungs just wore out.
Sorry guys.

justdoug
There is not much more the hospital can do. His heart is failing and he is very weak. I went to see him this morning and he was not awake but we talked to the staff and they said it does not look good. Again, I cannot divulge much but we hope he wakes up again to talk with us about what he wants. Bob has some more information.
Doug is one of the smartest people I have met and he knew this was coming one day, but it is still very sad.

Doug Winger relapse
General | Posted 10 years agoThings took a turn for the worse and Doug will not be out of the hospital for weeks. Again, I cannot divulge medical information but he is not able to receive outside visitors. This is sad news and I wish we could do more to help, but right now he is stable.
Several people have asked about charity donations to help with Doug's bills and I understand the impulse, but we do not have anything set up yet.
bobguthrie will be handling that soon. I really appreciate all the prayers and support during this time, and if Doug were awake he would be glad to hear of it.
Thanks for understanding.

Doug Winger doing better today
General | Posted 10 years agoGreat news! Or cautiously optimistic news.
Doug is awake and talking and doing much better. They are still running tests but it looks like he might make a full recovery. The pneumonia is about gone. There is so much I cannot divulge here but trust me I am amazed at the improvement. Bob says he was smiling and even joking a little. So relieved! The hospital staff warned us not to get too excited since he might reverse course, so no breaking out the champagne just yet. But still :) They are keeping him for another 48 hours at least.
Thank you everyone for your concern, it really means a lot.
Bob told him how we got the word out and Doug was glad and said Thank You. We have found his sister and his nephew thanks to everyone here, and the outpouring of your support.
Since I have tomorrow off work I will visit him again.

Doug Winger update
General | Posted 10 years agoI just got back from the hospital to see Doug and it does not look good. I will not violate his privacy but I can tell you that he is in bad shape and the staff are trying to locate his family. Of course they will not find anyone, because at his point Steve and Bob are all the family Doug has. He is in critical care but he is stable so we are going back later on.
Doug is one the smartest and nicest people I have ever met. His sense of humor and his low chuckle and his witty insights are not available on the internet but he is
justdoug here and he used my art for his user icon.
I will be letting everyone know if things change.
Thanks for all your prayers.

Doug Winger in the Hospital
General | Posted 10 years agoThe paramedics rushed Doug to the Emergency Room tonight and it does not look good. He has pneumonia and his body is starved and the doctor was not happy about his condition. Doug has been in poor health for awhile but I did not know it got this bad. He is too swollen for an I.V. feed but they have him on antibiotics and the trauma team got him a breathing machine.
If you pray, now is the time. Doug is a friend of mine and I am worried.

Should I get a Patreon?
General | Posted 10 years agoI am debating this.
On the one hand, fans seem to hate Patreon. On the other hand, other artists have great success with it.
I will not be putting my new art behind a Pay Wall, fear not! The reason I am thinking of getting a Patreon is so I can make comics. No one pays me to make the story of Ninevah or Candi come to life, and commissions only pay for commissions. I have a job so my time is limited to one or two days a week I can draw...and I want to spend that time on comics. That is my real labor of love and I want to make it happen. So what to do? I don't wish to anger my fans, I just want some help so I can post all my art publicly.
Please advise.

The Rare Update
General | Posted 10 years agoSome people may have wondered why the art has not been pouring forth this last week. There has been a reason for that...and it is somewhat embarrassing. On top of being too busy I got drain cleaner in my left eye. After rinsing it out I had to go to the E.R. for treatment and there went my art time. It looks like my eye will be fine and heal up but I missed my Day Off for Drawing.
Not trying to make excuses, but I wanted to let everyone know what is going on so they won't think I am being lazy. (Also, I am supposed to stay out of the sun while on these antibiotics. As if that is possible in California.) My goal is to heal up and work on the two commissions and the next comic page.
Maybe I should update this more often?
