Lip-Synching Animation - Now an Ozzy Tribute.
Posted a month agoHere's an animated bit I did awhile ago from Ozzy's song 'I Don't Want to Change the World', featuring my little merc fox named Nimbl.
It was for an assignment, now I guess it'll be a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, may he R.I.P.

Star Trek II: Minor Nitpicks :(
Posted 12 months agoIt pains me to admit that, in what I consider to be the greatest Star Trek film ever made, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, I found certain plot elements that do not entirely make sense. There are three I can think of.
1) Khan recognizing Chekhov when Chekhov and Captain Terrell beamed down to Ceti Alpha V. In the episode Space Seed, Chekhov never once appeared. Are we to assume that Khan had bumped into Chekhov during his stay on board the Enterprise during the quieter days of his duration? Maybe they bumped into each other in the men's room or something. Why didn't they just use someone else, such as Sulu or Uhura? I'm only going to guess they went with Pavel Chekhov because Sulu was needed too much for training young recruits on how to pilot a star ship, and they didn't wanna use Uhura, because, well, no one wants to see her get ear bugged. I mean, let's face it, every Star Trek series has its whipping boy. TOS had Chekhov, DS9 had O'Brien, VOY had Harry Kim, and so on, but I'm getting off-topic.
2) 'This IS Ceti Alpha V!' Yes, it was not Ceti Alpha VI, which everyone aboard the Reliant thought, because V had turned into a desert wasteland due to VI exploding and causing orbital shifts throughout the rest of the system. My question is how did they not know it was V when they landed there? Surely Starfleet keeps records of every system that has been encountered, so when the Reliant warps to the Ceti Alpha system, I wonder if the crew thought, "Why are the planets out of order? I think we're missing a world, guys. Nahhh, it'll be fine!' >.> Maybe they were too busy to look it up and were just excited to find a potential candidate for Dr. Marcus's experiment.
3) The Genesis Cave under the surface of Regula. It was a lovely scene seeing all of that water and those pretty trees, and such a lovely morning sunrise- WAIT. How? What is the heat and light source? I can allow the formation of water and plant life, but the light source? I figure Genesis was designed to be used on the surface of a dead planet or moon that was in the 'Goldilocks' orbit of a sun. Someone told me that the novelization had explained a mini-sun was created, but I never read it. Someone, fact-check.
Anyway, minor nitpicks. Anyone else wanna help me out here?

Remember this nutty PSA?

I first saw this crazy PSA on the DVD copy I bought of 'No Country For Old Men', and somehow, it was oddly appropriate.
These guys look like characters straight of a Cormac McCarthy novel.

Still Bugs Me (regarding once-used Trek lore).
Posted a year agoTo this day, I question the strange decisions the powers in the entertainment industry have made in regards to franchises such as Star Trek. But even when Star Trek was actually really good, they created some fascinating characters and races in which they never touch base. Some of these characters were too interesting to not address at least one more time. Can they at least get a passing mention??
I've spoken about higher life forms such as Q, Trelane and Kevin Uxbridge. Kevin, aka, the Dowd, was, in my mind, a far more interesting and tragic character than Q, but we only saw him just once. WTF?
This guy had objectively more power than Q by far, at least as far as I saw it; he had the ability to wipe out a species by just thinking about it. And that's it. One episode. Why? Was he so powerful that the writers didn't know what else to do with him?
Would we have run the risk of him being used as an easy Deus ex Machina? Not like Star Trek has even done that before. *coughTheProphetscough*
How come Captain Jellico never made a re-appearance? The jokes/memes have been made of there being a Jellico series, but let's be honest here; any one of you would have watched that show if it was made around the time DS9 was produced. I would have.
Imagine it: a show focused on the temporary asshole replacement captain of the Enterprise that would have dared make him the main character. By the end of season one, you'd probably begin to understand his thought process and reasoning for being such a hard-ass, and by the middle of season two you'd perhaps come to like the guy.
Why create such intriguing characters and then never mention them again? That's the one thing about Star Trek that sometimes bothered me. Khan could have easily been such a character. He wasn't, thank God.
I wonder how Riva's doing with those peace talks on Solais V?

Curious... whatever happened to...
Posted a year ago...Donotsue?
Anyone remember him? I do! Finnish artist, drew Warner Bros characters quite on-model doing adult stuff?
Got sued for it by WB? You know, stuff that can't happen today, because the Rule 34 Deluge cannot possibly be held back?
Where the hell is Donotsue? Is he doing okay?
Just curious.

Commissioners: Please, don't do this.
Posted a year agoIf you're someone who is going to commission an artist, first and foremost, please get out of the habit of talking like you're going to hire them right then and there, and then bail out at the last minute.
The biggest excuse I've heard has been bills. "On second thought, I got bills." Okay, then why tell an artist you're going to hire them in the first place?
Don't. Do. This.
This is annoying, because most times an artist is making a living off of commissions, and you get their hopes up a bit, only to pull the rug from under their feet. This is not a polite thing. If you keep that up, they will refuse to do work for you in the future.
I have a TOS that lists this. Rule #4: https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/9546753
I get that sometimes we all forget about things, and then suddenly remember. I've done stuff like that, too, but with a few folks I've noticed it's been a growing thing, and it's time I call it out, and other artists should do the same.

The Entertainment Industry and Missed Opportunities
Posted a year agoWhatever the hell the entertainment industry is going though these days, I hope it ends soon.
But this little rant isn't about what we know what big entertainment corporations should or shouldn't be doing. There are plenty of Youtubers out there that have said what needs to be said regarding that issue.
This is a rant regarding established franchises, even before bigger companies bought them out. This is more of a lament, a rant, a sharing of ideas, speculations and a distant hope.
More and more these days I see what one would call missed opportunities. Some of these opportunities are possibilities one may or may not think about, but would think to theirself: "Hey, that could actually work. Let's expand on it!" Or there are possibilities which stare people right in the face, and they completely do not see it! Or they ignore it. Or someone pitches the idea and it gets shot down.
A good example of an idea staring you in the face: The Aliens films and the universe in which they reside.
When Prometheus (and later Alien: Covenant) came out many of us actually thought the film would have been a further exploration of what I like to call the 'Weyland-Yutaniverse', and not relate to the xenomorphs we've all come to know.
We saw Prometheus. We were disappointed, and part of the reason why is they EXPLAINED who the Space Jockeys were and the origin of the xenomorphs. Yeah. No. Part of what made Alien such a grand film was folks were left with mystery and speculation. That was FUN! (And no, I won't go into the 2-part comic that did explore the Space Jockeys.)
The other part of why some fans were upset was that they focused on the xenomorphs. Yeah. NO. We've already seen the xenomorphs. Give us something else! No. Really. The Weyland-Yutaniverse SHOULD go far beyond the confines of the aliens.
Here's what Prometheus could have been: a colony from the planet Thetas (yes, it's an actual colony mentioned in Alien) having some civil issues with the Company having a huge political overreach in their lives. Maybe it could have been a modern retelling of the British Empire having their reign over Ireland and imposing weird laws that completely put the citizens at a severe living disadvantage. But instead of Britain and Ireland, it could be Weyland-Yutani and Thetas respectively. This could be looked at as a relatively solid story idea based in history.
Another idea: In the movie Aliens, during a breakfast scene Private Frost jovially mentioned getting that 'Arcturian poontang'. The mention of 'Arcturian' would lead one to suppose there was a colonized world called Arcturus and the beings who dwelt there were colonists, or were creatures or human hybrids. The conversation went on: 'Yes, but the one you had was a male!' 'Doesn't matter when it's Arcturian!'
One could explore this. Were Arcturians a genetically modified group of humans? One doesn't know. If Arcturus was a colony subjected genetic modification, a story of corporate meddling into nefarious biological misdeeds affecting said colonists could have been written and produced. The idea is not really a mystery, but if a person is prone to think about dialogue and hints at a bigger world, the person is definitely going to speculate. World building.
Another idea: Seegson was a business competitor to Weyland-Yutani. Anyone who has thoroughly played Alien: Isolation would know Seegson was a company that started off manufacturing parts for FTL travel as well as their own brand of androids. Since both corporations are corrupt and hold their employees with little regard, they could have gotten down and dirty with some brutal corporate espionage, maybe using these poorly-manufactured androids as a way of dealing with troublesome folk. We could even send in the Colonial Marines to help mop up( but let's not use them TOO much). That could have been a film. No aliens. Just people and world building.
Also, I consider the game Alien: Isolation canon to the Weyland-Yutaniverse as much as the first two Alien films. I've never seen a game expand on a universe so well as this one. I did hear Ghostbusters game was fairly solid in that regard, though.
An example of a not-so-obvious idea: Anyone here ever see the film Interstellar? I was pretty obsessed with that movie when it came out in 2014. I even did some weird crossover art: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/17032943/
Interstellar had potential for world-building! It had a LOT of potential, and the fact I'm the only one I know of mentioning this shows no one else has thought of this, or I'm just weird like that.
The movie hinted at a lot of shit the world was going through at the time. The characters dropped quite a few verbal hints of what came before: "Just six billion people (we're almost up to 8 billion these days). Just try to imagine that." "Popcorn should not be eaten at a baseball game. I want a hot dog." "I still pay my taxes." The Dodgers were playing a half-empty small-town stadium, no okra anymore, just corn. You never saw ONE animal. Just people.
It made your mind start to wonder just what the hell happened, and how would you explain some of the so-called scientific inaccuracies in a movie that at least made an attempt to be scientifically accurate?
Here is where a three-season series could have come in; a spin-off from the Chris Nolan film. I think the title of the spin-off series would be something called 'Lazarus', because that was the name of the original mission that explored beyond the worm hole near Saturn.
Season one could have taken place before the events of Interstellar. It could have been a world war, or just a slow dissolution of the cities and population as the military was used to keep order. We'd see the Marine robots like TARS a bit more and how they were utilized during this time. The hiding of NASA as a government establishment could work as a story plot as well as the origins of the 'crop' virus.
Season two could take place during the events of Interstellar when Cooper and the crew were out in the other galaxy trying to establish 'Plan A and B' while Earth focuses solely on 'Plan A'. The focus would be on Earth and the attempts to salvage whatever plants, seeds, crops, animal DNA, sperm and eggs were left. Imagine a setting in the Antarctic where the scientists down there do what they can to create strains of crops in their greenhouses that could withstand the virus. Or at least use the South Pole as a sealed off area for emergency green housing and seed storage. Maybe there could be focus on the seed storage in Norway.
Season three could be focused on the events after Cooper and TARS returned from the other galaxy. A story plot could show how the colony near Saturn got established and whatever political strife occurred therein. An ideal plot could be focusing on the remnants of Earth and the people left there to stay to try to revive the planet to what it was before.
Now, the Lazarus series would be in opposition of the idea of not exploring the xenomorph aspect of the Weyland-Yutaniverse, and some might say this dismantles my original proposed idea of taking away the fun of the mystery by exploring it further.
One could be right, but one could look at it like this: Lazarus would be an example of exploring the mystery established in a film and it wouldn't necessarily ruin anything, because it's based on events that actually happened in that world's history, and these events were likely recorded.
Alien, on the other hand, is steeped in mystery. It's part of the charm of that universe in that exploring it too much would take away the fun, at least where the xenomorphs and the space jockeys are concerned.
It's speculative what-could-have-beens and throwing ideas out there that I wish could have seen the light of day.
What do y'all think? Be sure to like, comment and hit the subscribe button. ;)

Top Things I Learned About Ireland
Posted 2 years ago1) It's easy to strike up a conversation just about anywhere. Kind of like Texas. :)
2) Irish folk are generally proud of being Irish. I saw the Irish flag around the place as much as I see the US flag over here. I approve.
3) Sometimes the Irish like to mess with you with their humor (the Scottish are just as guilty).
4) Sadly, some folks trash their own place as they do here. (And by 'trash' I mean, throw litter and shit around.)
5) The homeless people in the cities are more aggressive (not in a violent way) than the homeless here (maybe it was just Dublin).
6) There are a LOT of dudes named 'Michael' over there. :)
7) Ireland is by far the greenest place I've ever seen.
8) Next time I'll rent a car and brave the other side of the road.

More Misunderstood Song Lyrics
Posted 2 years agoYeah, this just keeps happening. This time it's from one of my favorite rock albums: Led Zeppelin II. The song? Heartbreaker.
The real lyrics:
Hey fellas, have you heard the news?
You know that Annie's back in town
I won't take long, just watch and see how the fellas lay their money down
Her style is new, but the face the same as it was so long ago
But from her eyes, a different smile like that of one who knows
Well, it's been ten years or maybe more since I first set eyes on you
The best years of my life gone by, here I am alone and blue
Some people cry and some people die by the wicked ways of love
But I'll just keep on rollin' along with the grace of the Lord above
People talkin all around 'bout the way you left me flat
I don't care what the people say, I know where their jive is at
One thing I do have on my mind if you can clarify, please do
It's the way you call me another guy's name
When I try to make love to you, yeah
I try to make love but it ain't no use
Give it to me
Give it
Mm, work so hard I couldn't unwind
Get some money saved
Abuse my love a thousand times
However hard I tried
Heartbreaker, your time has come
Can't take your evil way
Go away, heartbreaker
Heartbreaker!
Heartbreaker!
Heart!
What I heard:
Hey fellas, have you heard the news?
Your old lady's back in town
I won't take long, just to come and see how the fellas lay their money down
The song is new, but the play is the same (blahblahblah) so long ago
From her eyes, a different smile (blahblahblah) who knows
Well, it's been ten years or maybe more since I first set eyes on you
The best years of my life gone by, I'm forever 'lone and blue
Some people cry and some people die by the wicked ways of love
But I'll just keep on rollin' along with the grace of the Lord above
People talkin all about 'bout the way you left me flat
I don't care what the people say, I know where their job is at
One thing I do have on my mind, and if you carry it by, please do
Is the way you call me another guy's name
When I try to make love to you, yeah
I try to make love on you
Give it to me
Give it
(Blahblahblahblahblah)
Get some money saved
Abuse my love a thousand times

It wasn't quite as bad a Panama by Van Halen, but I think I prefer some of the lyrics I heard. :)

However hard I tried
Heartbreaker, your time has come
Can't take your evil ways
Go away, heartbreaker
Heartbreaker!
Heartbreaker!
Heart!
It wasn't quite as bad a Panama by Van Halen, but I think I prefer some of the lyrics I heard. :)
Attn! Irish People: If you read this, reply below. :)
Posted 2 years agoSo in about a week's time I'll be heading to Ireland.
Apart from what I've seen in movies/shows/books and people I spoke to who are Irish, I am going without any real expectations, except:
Castles. I wanna see the castles!
A hat. I'm gonna find a flat cap MADE in Ireland.
An Irish flag. Like the cap, I will find a copy of the Irish flag made in Ireland. No, not made in China. I found a Scottish flag made in Scotland, certainly I can find one made in Ireland.
If there's anything to look out for while on this tour, good / bad?
Advice on what to/what not to do/say while over there?
I'll be hittin' these towns:
Dublin, Powercourt, Kilkenney, Cashel, Cork, Kinsale, Killarney, Limerick, Moher's Cliff, Galway, Clonmacnoise
If anyone wants to hang (for what little time I may have. It's a tour bus thing, after all), let me know. Maybe we can synchronize a time.

Scammer: ARTISTS BEWARE.
Posted 2 years agoSo I got a charge back on my Paypal saying I never made with the goods, which is a lie because I did. I emailed the finished image to the email they used to contact me regarding details of their character.
They even watched me draw it on Picarto.
Myself along with many other artists are getting cheated out of their money. I have their FA page, which they recently cleared of all content:
https://www.furaffinity.net/user/misfitstar/
Read the shouts, too.
No doubt this person will try the same thing again, but under a different handle.
Just letting y'all know.
Edit: If anyone wants to confer or verify specific details regarding the buyer, go ahead and message me. I don't want to put too much information out there in the event the Paypal email used was someone's hacked/stolen account.

Who here over 45 remembers this Saturday morning show?
What would they sound like?
Posted 2 years agoEver wonder what your characters or someone else's characters sound like when they speak?
I've asked this question to other artists before. I think I've brought this topic up before, but it's still one I like to think about.
Some were indifferent, some didn't really think about it, others were like... huh, what DO they sound like?
Whitney, for example, may sound like Vasquez from Aliens.
My mouse character likely sounds sort of like me. I even animated a bit with him using my voice.
We got any thoughts on this, yawl?

Important Commission Update: Price hike (please read).
Posted 2 years agoHey, folks.
As everyone knows, I currently accept commissions, both off an on streams for a living.
After a good year of giving it some thought, as well as discussing the matter with a couple of other artists, I have decided to raise my commission prices by $10
For most tiers I will be raising the cost by $10, namely inks, colors and shading. Sketches will remain $30-40 per character. The 30-40 range, as stated on the price sheet, will depend on complexity of poses and detail of said character(s).
My decision has come mostly from the rising cost of, well, everything, which we all have seen in the past couple of years.
Inflation is a bitch, but in order to make ends meet, everyone has to adhere to that inevitability, and that would include freelancers.
It's never an easy decision to make. I felt the same the last time I had to raise my prices. It's just the nature of the beast.
I shall update my commissions sheet to reflect these changes, which shall start next Monday.

Paul and Jamis - a thought.
Posted 2 years agoPotential Spoilers if you hadn't seen Dune part 1.
So many of us have seen Villaneuve's Dune part 1.
The more I watch and study the film, the more tiny things I pick up.
In some of Paul visions we see this one Fremen guy gently speaking to him regarding how to survive in the desert. He also philosophized about the understanding of things just by letting them happen.
Good, sound advice. Sounds like the kinda person I'd want as a pal.
Cool.
Paul finally meets the guy that was in his visions, except the guy didn't accept Paul and his mother Jessica into the Fremen fold.
In fact, he wanted to kill them as he felt they were intruders.
At first, I wondered... wait... was that same guy in Paul's visions? He sure sounded like as well as looked like him.
What's goin' on here?
To make sure I looked up some information about this and was kinda sad to confirm it. In the movie the director kept it subtle, but not that subtle. It just left me confused at first.
What the visions versus the reality meant was that Paul could see possible outcomes. They even mentioned this in the movie and in the book.
Sadly, the possible vision wasn't the outcome Paul likely would have preferred.
So when Paul does finally fight Jamis, the guy in his visions, one could imagine the weight that had on his shoulders.
Stilgar watching the duel was asking Jessica: 'Is he toying with him?'
No, not really. He didn't wanna kill him. He was trying to delay the inevitable. Jessica said that Paul had never killed anyone before. Now while that's true, she didn't know the full weight of situation; only Paul knew, thus the idea of having to kill Jamis was many times worse than having to just kill some random dude in self-defense.
I mean, Paul tried. He really tried. He asked Jamis, "Do you yield?" Stilgar yelled out the rules of the duel, to which only death is the conclusion.
Shit.
Paul, at this point, was mostly dodging and blocking, then once again putting the crysknife to Jamis's neck as if to ask: 'Yield..?' He
was trying to hold off killing Jamis, because he wanted the vision he saw of him to be reality's outcome.
Paul, in his mind, and in a sense, was killing someone he already knew and had considered a friend. Before dueling Jamis, Paul had a brief vision where Jamis wins the duel and Paul ends up dying. Maybe in Paul's mind he was thinking of letting Jamis win and sacrificing himself, thus that vision was manifest.
Only Paul knew the full brunt of his actions. Would he keep that to himself or let Chani know? We'll see in part 2.

Don't Starve Together Modding - I may need help!
Posted 2 years agoDoes anyone here know how to make original character mods for the game Don't Starve Together?
I just got the game and wanted to make my own character for it. So far, I got the character done, for the most part, but the technical shit is throwin' me around. The game keeps giving me this error where it can't find certain files, which are supposed to generate once you put the mod in the game's mod folder, then fire up the game and everything should generate like it should, or so the video told me.
I even followed the lengthy how-to video on Youtube one of the developers made, but I keep getting a LUA 620 error on it, whatever the hell that means.
Can't find anything on the forums. Nothin'.
I appreciate any help if there are any experienced DST character modders out there. :)

Give Me Your Movie Intros!
Posted 2 years agoOne of things in a film that let's me know what the tone of a film is going to be is the title sequence. Sometimes my good first impression of a film is the title sequence.
One of the most memorable film intros is that of Star Wars. Simple. Bold. Musically catchy in just the first few notes. But an intro can also tell a story in and of itself in just a visual sense. To me a good intro is about as entertaining as the movie itself.
I want to know what other film appreciators' favorite movie title sequences are.
Let me start off with one of my favorites, which is from Guy Ritchie's film Snatch:

Come on. Give 'em to me!

The Thang animation
Posted 2 years agoI Don't Get It.
Posted 2 years agoI see a lot of good works out there where artists don't sign their names, or if their names are missing.
Can someone explain why this is?
It's annoying, because I wanna know who it was who made the art.

Another not-as-frequent streaming, but still taking comms...
Posted 3 years agoI plan to stream again tomorrow night, but I'm not as frequent as of late since I got some other stuff going on; stuff in which I need to focus.
I'm still up for taking on commissions, so let me know on here or on my email: dutchcartoon[at]gmail.com
I also offer one-on-one streams if that's a preferred method. I do that with some folks currently.
Any thoughts on me making a client list?

My Pillowfort /Patreon Account Reminder
Posted 3 years agohttps://www.pillowfort.social/Dutchcartoon
I'm taking to using Pillowfort more often as a means to post work, besides on here and on Twitter.
I am uncertain as to what's going to to happen on the Twitter platform, but it is what it is. I'm staying on there, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to broaden my reach:
https://www.pillowfort.social/Dutchcartoon
I still have my Patreon in case anyone would like to support me on there:

Please follow me on both/either platforms if ya like!
