ACADEMIA, CAREER & FAMILY LIFE
I graduated from my master's degree in May 2022, after a slow progression complicated by natural disasters, economic difficulties related to my parents divorcing, and academic burnout. I started this degree in January 2017, and had skipped a semester due to lacking medical insurance coverage. The whole thing took me five and a half (5.5) years, when the nominal duration should be no more than 3 years. I did manage to finish it with perfect grades, at the cost of my peace of mind.
While I did finish the degree, I still have other pending things to do before starting professional work, in my case for civil engineering. I'm getting some required professional licenses and certifications, but at the same time have family situations needing my attention. More specifically, my mom wants to move, and she's been wanting my active involvement in the whole process from start to finish. At the time of this writing, the process is fairly advanced, but still has uncertainty because of her finances.
SIMCITY 4
This has been my favorite videogame for 13 years, and my involvement with it has actually increased! It's a relatively old videogame, about to reach 20 years since its publication, but one which still remains relevant as one of the leading city simulators out there. During these last 3 years, I've been really involved with advanced gameplay, and since early 2021, I've been part of the Network Addon Mod (NAM) team, the modding group in charge of the game's transportation infrastructure! It's been quite an intense and fulfilling experience, especially as the team has found itself in what amounts to a golden age, in terms of its internal dynamics and its productive output. As of the time of this writing, I've already initiated one of the big projects for the mod, debuting on Version 45, which we published last September!
SimCity 4 has become my main creative outlet, perhaps matching better with my affinity for landscapes, architecture and infrastructure. During the past few months, I did slow down again, but still maintain lots of interest in the game. I'm pretty sure I'll continue involved with it for many more years to come. VISUAL ART ACTIVITY AND PLANS
From mid-2017 to mid-2022, my involvement with visual art decreased drastically. During that period, I only managed to publish a measly 11 works. I did draw and paint some more, but not things which would be sufficiently detailed and complete to justify publication. Overall, my output was much smaller than what I used to put out there since joining FurAffinity in April of 2009. After finishing the master's degree, and taking care of some of my personal matters, I have resumed with some more drawings, and in re-visiting some digital visual art tools I had but never bothered using to their full capabilities. I'm also diversifying with the art media I'm using. On the physical/traditional media side, I've been trying artist grade coloring pencils, these are nice, but I feel they don't achieve the full color saturation I'm accustomed from acrylic paint, or digital coloring of graphite pencil images. I've also been interested in trying oil paints, but these are rather expensive to acquire, even if I do like the results achievable with them. Meanwhile, on the digital side, I'm re-visiting cel-shading, soft shading with airbrush tools, and learning the ins-and-outs of image effects. I've also tried out a variety of digital illustration software: Krita, FireAlpaca and Clip Studio Paint. As of late, my works have been more experimental, and relatively slow to complete compared to prior periods.
One idea I've been toying with for the last 2 years has been opening visual art commissions, but I feel torn about proceeding with it. More than anything, what's stopping me is my lack of consistency with drawing or painting--I don't feel like my drawing habits are consistent enough to deliver finished pieces in a timely manner. This even affects my own personal drawing, I've had stuff I've left unfinished for several months, or even several years, to then resume it at a later date. A second important factor against is my emotional attachment to my artwork, I either draw personal stuff, or draw gifts for friends and acquaintances. I feel the pressure of fulfilling a contractual obligation to complete a work for hire is burdensome. A third factor is the time commitment required to do visual art consistently. I have other pastimes and rapidly fluctuating responsibilities with home and my family, it'd take a good amount of effort to strictly separate time for this activity, and I know lots of my friends would feel upset if I actually went through with the strictness.
At the same time, I also realize my skills have improved, even with the 5-year slowdown. I do have friends and acquaintances who are both interested and willing to pay me to draw for them. I do have short-term economic needs to cover, and also know I specialize in certain niche topics within the furry fandom, so I know there's room for my work. If I were to do commissioned artwork, it wouldn't be cheap, especially as my drawing styles are elaborate, even when I try to go simple. I also don't know how much of a potential market I'd have, I've noticed inactivity from many of my watchers, many of which I don't think are present on the site anymore. I'd really like to read everyone's thoughts on this idea!

Pude completar y obtener mi grado de maestría el pasado mayo de 2022, tras un progreso lento entre desastres naturales, dificultades económicas asociadas al divorcio de mis padres, y agotamiento mental por la academia. Aunque sí completé este grado académico, todavía tengo algunos asuntos pendientes que atender antes de empezar mi trabajo profesional, en mi caso sería para ingeniería civil. Estoy obteniendo licencias y certificaciones profesionales que necesito, pero al mismo tiempo tengo situaciones familiares que exigen mi atención. Más específicamente, mi madre quiere mudarse, y ella quiere que esté involucrado en el proceso completo, de principio a fin. Al momento de este escrito, ese proceso está bastante avanzado, pero todavía tiene incertidumbre por su situación financiera.

Este ha sido mi videojuego favorito por los pasados 13 años, ¡y el nivel al que me involucro aquí ha aumentado! Es un juego relativamente antiguo, está por cumplir 20 años tras su publicación, pero todavía se mantiene muy relevante como uno de los simuladores de ciudad principales. Durante los pasados 3 años, ando muy involucrado jugándolo de forma avanzada, y desde principios de 2021, formo parte del equipo Network Addon Mod (NAM), ¡el grupo a cargo de desarrollar los mods de infraestructura de transporte! Esta experiencia ha sido intensa y muy satisfactoria, en especial cuando el equipo parece estar en una época dorada, en términos de la dinámica entre sus miembros, y su nivel de productividad. Al momento de este escrito, ya he comenzado proyectos de envergadura para el mod, haciendo su debut público con la Versión 45, publicada el pasado mes de septiembre.
SimCity 4 se ha convertido en mi principal medio de expresión creativa, pareando mejor con mi gusto por los paisajes, la arquitectura y la infraestructura. Durante los meses pasados, he bajado mi nivel de participación un poco, pero sigo muy interesado en el juego. Estoy seguro que continuaré involucrado por muchos años más. Desde mediados de 2017 hasta mediados de 2022, mi nivel de actividad en arte visual se redujo drásticamente. Durante este período, solamente logré publicar 11 piezas. Sí llegué a dibujar y pintar algo más, pero no fue nada que considerara lo bastante detallado y completo como para publicar. En general, mi ritmo creativo fue mucho menor que el que tuve desde unirme a FurAffinity en abril de 2009. Tras concluir mi grado de maestría, y hacerme cargo de algunos de mis asuntos personales, reanudé con algunos dibujos, y estoy revisitando herramientas de arte visual que tenía pero que nunca aproveché a plena capacidad. También estoy diversificando los medios de arte que estoy usando. En el caso de medios tradicionales/fisicos, he estado probando lápices de colorear de gradación artística, son buenos, pero siento que no logro el nivel de saturación de color al que estoy acostumbrado cuando uso pintura acrílica, o cuando coloreo digitalmente mis imágenes sombreadas con lápiz de grafito. También me interesan las pinturas al óleo, pero obtenerlas es más costoso, aun si me agradan los resultados que puedo obtener con ellas. En el caso de arte digital, estoy revisitando el sombreado por celdas, sombreado suave con brocha de aire (airbrush), y practicando con las opciones para efectos digitales en las imágenes. También he probado varios programas para ilustración digital: Krita, FireAlpaca, y Clip Studio Paint. Últimamente, mis obras son de carácter más experimental, y me he demorado más en completarlas, al comparar con períodos previos.
Una idea que he estado contemplando por los pasados 2 años ha sido abrir comisiones de arte visual, pero tengo sentimientos encontrados respecto a proceder con esta idea. Más que nada, me detiene mi falta de consistencia dibujando o pintando--no siento que mis hábitos de dibujo sean lo bastante consistentes para completar piezas de forma puntual y razonable. Esto también afecta mis dibujos personales, tengo piezas que han esperado inconclusas por varios meses, o incluso varios años, para luego reanudarlas en una fecha posterior. Un segundo factor importante en contra es mi apego emocional a mi arte. Generalmente dibujo piezas personales, o regalos para amigos y conocidos. Siento difícil resistir la presión de cumplir una obligación contractual de una obra encargada. Un tercer factor es el compromiso de tiempo requerido para realizar arte consistentemente. Tengo otros pasatiempos y responsabilidades familiares y del hogar que fluctúan rápidamente, me tomaría mucho esfuerzo separar estrictamente el tiempo para esta actividad, y sé que muchos de mis amigos se sentirían molestos o apenados si realmente fuera disciplinado con ello.
A su vez, también me percato que mis destrezas han mejorando, aún con estos 5 años lentos. Tengo amigos y conocidos que están interesados y dispuestos a pagarme para que les dibuje algo. Tengo necesidades económicas que cubrir al corto plazo, y también sé que me especializo en ciertos temas más particulares en el fandom furry, así que sé que hay espacio para mis creaciones. Si fuera a realizar arte por comisión, no sería la más barata, más aún al considerar que mis estilos de dibujo son más elaborados, aún cuando intento hacerlos más sencillos. Tampoco sé cómo sería el mercado que podría tener, he notado cierta inactividad de mi audiencia, muchos de ellos ya ni siquiera están presentes en este sitio web. ¡Me encantaría leer sus opiniones al respecto!

Caribbean earthquakes / Terremotos caribeños
General | Posted 6 years agoParece que está habiendo mucha actividad sísmica a lo largo del lado norte de la Placa del Caribe. Empezando el mes de enero azotaron terremotos de magnitudes entre 5 y 6.4 (el principal en la madrugada del 7 de enero) al suroeste de Puerto Rico, seguimos teniendo réplicas pero por lo menos se han calmado bastante.
Sin embargo hoy la cosa se pone fea por un terremoto magnitud 7.7 en la Trinchera de Caimán, afectando a las Islas Caimán, al sur de Cuba y al noroeste de Jamaica. Hasta ahora han ocurrido incidentes de licuación de suelo, formación de sumideros / dolinas / cenotes , y preocupación por un posible tsunami o maremoto (autoridades sísmicas ya corroboraron que no ocurriría por el tipo de movimiento de las fallas). Envío un saludo solidario a mi gente de la región caribeña, siempre debemos estar preparados ante situaciones naturales extremas como estas.

Starting off the month of January, we faced earthquakes ranging in magnitudes from 5 to 6.4 (main shock, before dawn on January 7th) in southwestern Puerto Rico, we continue facing replicas / aftershocks but at least these have calmed down substantially.
However, things get truly ugly today with a magnitude 7.7 quake in the Cayman Trench, affecting the Cayman Islands, southern Cuba and northwestern Jamaica. So far there's been incidents of soil liquefaction, formation of sinkholes, and worries about a possible tsunami (seismic authorities have verified that it won't happen due to the type of fault movement). Here I'm sending a greeting in solidarity to my fellow people of the Caribbean region, we must always be ready for extreme natural events like these.

Hasta ahora han ocurrido incidentes de licuación de suelo, formación de sumideros / dolinas / cenotes , y preocupación por un posible tsunami o maremoto (autoridades sísmicas ya corroboraron que no ocurriría por el tipo de movimiento de las fallas). Envío un saludo solidario a mi gente de la región caribeña, siempre debemos estar preparados ante situaciones naturales extremas como estas.

Al ritmo que van mi expectativa es tener servicio eléctrico en casa para el domingo 19 de noviembre. Sin embargo, tener electricidad en casa no significa que vuelvo a estar presente como de costumbre. Favor de leer los puntos siguientes:
* La Internet en casa la obtengo por una línea de fibra óptica para cable TV. Dicha línea sufrió daños considerables por el huracán y por tráfico que aplastó y rompió los cables (son aéreos, no subterráneos)
* Desconozco cuándo se repararán estas líneas de fibra óptica y cuánto se demorará.
* Tengo que verificar con mi madre si hay facturas atrasadas de cable TV e Internet. De haberlas hay que pagarlas para evitar corte de servicio, o en su defecto para restaurar servicio cortado.
* Estoy continuando con mis clases, por lo que mi tiempo libre es mínimo y mísero. Huracán María / Hurricane Maria

Como muchos pueden saber, aquí en el lado noreste del Caribe andamos en espera de la llegada del huracán María. Ya las islas de sotavento están empezando a sentir la marejada ciclónica y ya pronto les llegan los poderosos vientos de huracán categoría 2. Aquí en Puerto Rico esperamos que el azote sea más directo y en categoría 4, con las trayectoria oficial entrando en la costa sureste y saliendo pro el noroeste. Esto causa más problemas porque hay impactos directos de viento, lluvia y marejadas ciclónicas en todo Puerto Rico. En mi caso particular, estaré desalojando mi vivienda costera al final de la tarde del martes, que todavía anda despejado, iré con familiares que viven en una parte más segura de mi ciudad. Solo espero que los efectos no sean demasiado devastadores y que no se pierdan vidas ni hayan lesiones graves por el fenómeno.
Actualización 2017-sep-18, 8pm: el boletín de las 8 de la noche de hoy indica que ya es un huracán categoría 5 y todavía no ha cruzado la parte caliente del Mar Caribe oriental. No es una exageración decir que esto puede ser Irma parte 2.

Now the Leeward Antilles are starting to feel the storm surge and will soon greet category 2 hurricane winds. Here in Puerto Rico we expect the phenomenon's strike to be more direct and with category 4, with the official trajectory having the storm making entry in the southeast coast and exiting through the northwest. This will cause more problems as there will be direct impacts from wind, rain and storm surge throughout Puerto Rico. In my particular case, I'll be evacuating my seaside residence tomorrow Tuesday durign the evening, which'll still be clear-weathered, to go with relatives living at a safer part of the city. I just hope the effects aren't too devastating and that there's no loss of life nor serious injuries due to the phenomenon.
Update on 2017-sep-18, 8pm: the weather report from 8 in the evening tonight indicates that it's already a category 5 hurricane and it has yet to cross the hot part of the east Caribbean Sea. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that this could end up being Irma 2.0.
