Soundtrack: "The Fountain"
General | Posted 18 years agoI just got the soundtrack for the movie "The Fountain." I'd recommend getting it if you've seen the movie, and seeing the movie and then getting it if you haven't seen the movie. Because it's GORGEOUS. All strings and electric guitar and drums, my 3 favorite instrumental types. The movie's amazing as well, and has a quality to it that not a lot of other movies do. It manages to be dreamlike and grounded at the same time. And the ending is one of a very few that have ever made me cry, but it still has hope as well as sadness. Plus it's an epic love story, which I'm a sucker for.
3 cheers for the hopeless romantics!

AB! And Commission Update.
General | Posted 18 years agoSo I went to Anime Boston and it was awesome!!!! I volunteered, which was hard work, but totally worth it because I got my $40 back. More will come later with a link to my LJ entry when I put the pictures up.
To my commissioners, I offer an apology. I had meant to mail out the finished commission and finish the in-progress one by Wednesday, but the production I'm stage-managing had some snafus and I just couldn't find the time. I will definitely be doing that by the end of this week. Once again, sorry!
Also, while we're on the subject of commissions, I have some new items to offer! Unfortunately my scanner seems to have lost communication with my printer, so it'll be a bit before I have examples up, but I can give you prices now and edit this entry later.
Greeting cards! : Black and White $10, Color $15

Thoughts on VT
General | Posted 18 years agoI think that what this horrifying event shows is that the system's broken. The kid's teacher went to the police for help and they didn't do anything. The kid went in to buy a handgun and nobody asked him why he wanted it. The background check took 1 minute. That's not long enough to find out anything more than name, place and date of birth, and criminal history. At any of those points, the chain could've been broken and this could've been prevented. But it wasn't. Because people have an ingrained selfishness and want to avoid trouble as much as they possibly can.
Oh look, avoiding little troubles just makes bigger ones.
Also, WTF Governor Kaine? Nobody's turning this into a political hobbyhorse except you and Jack Thompson. Even I, with my anti-firearm views, am not using this as an example for why we should have tighter gun control. I'm just using it as an example for why we should actually use the gun control policies we have, not just follow them nominally so it's all legal on paper.

General | Posted 18 years agoSo this morning a guy went into Virginia Tech and opened fire, killing 30 people. He was killed too, bringing the death toll to 31. So far, that is. There might be more fatalities if some of the wounded don't make it.
One of my best friends goes to Virginia Tech.
It took me all day to find out if she was ok (she is).
And this coming right on the heels of last night.
Holy shit.

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them
General | Posted 18 years agoCredit for the title goes to Al Franken.
So the other half of the entity known as Razzabeth (I'm one half,
piratechick69 is the other) just had her heart crushed by a boy she thought was her pet. This kid had given her this image of him as a pure, honest, untouched, willing single sub with impeccable manners and a crazy, super-conservative family. Turns out he's been online dating a girl in FL for the past year and his family is just a bunch of normal Republicans. And now he wants to break it off with my friend.
It's not so much the other girl that hurt her (she's poly), it's the fact that he lied. Now she has to call into question everything he's ever told her.
You all know that the 'sona I've been using is Elsinore, the whie rabbit with the lion and bear ancestry. What you don't know is that she's my fantasy-sona. She's everything I wish I could be: fit, athletic, good with weapons and hand-to-hand, independent, able to go out and forcefully change the world for the better.
I have another 'sona that comes out at times like this. It's what I call my me-sona. Liz the dragon is a pudgy, out-of-shape, nineteen year old college student majoring in creative writing with near constant writer's block, who couldn't hold her own in a fight with a bucket of clams, complains about everything and has an unhealthy fondness for chocolate and fried chicken. She represents who I really am, all the bad aspects that people normally try to phase out in their 'sonas. But she's got the good aspects too. And one of those is an extreme, almost insane loyalty to her friends and family.
When somebody hurts someone I care about, or sometimes if I'm in extreme need, the Grand Dragon comes out.
The Grand Dragon is the part of me that, in seventh grade, helped me keep my head after getting kicked by a horse in the arm and leg. The Grand Dragon got me onto that same horse bareback and helped me ride it up the hill to the barn, where I calmly dismounted, tied the horse to a hitching post, walked into the office and fainted.
The Grand Dragon, in eighth grade, caused me to tackle an older boy who was sexually molesting one of my friends while he was holding the nail gun. It's what kept me on my feet when that gun went off and sent two nails into my shoulderblade. The Grand Dragon is what wrenched the gun out of his hand, punched out two of his teeth, scratched him down the back so badly he needed 20 stitches, and kneed him in the balls before pulling out my cell phone and calling 911 so that they could come pick all three of us up.
The Grand Dragon is what will help me kill the bitch who tore my family apart four years ago if she should ever be unlucky enough to come within a mile of me.
The Grand Dragon is waiting for this boy right now. I can feel it behind my eyes, looking out. It tinges my vision with red and blue, giving everything an aura of vibrant color. It wants to get this boy on the phone or on IM, or better, in person, where he can't run away, and tear into him with words that will make him understand the consequences of what he did.
If I were a person with an income, the Grand Dragon would be buying tickets to Texas right now to hunt him down.
I have to apologize, my dearest. I told you I had homework, and that is true, but the real reason I left was because if I didn't do something else soon I was going to grab your computer and let the Dragon loose on him in IM. I still might.
I need to do something to get rid of this anger. This journal helped a little, but not enough. Drawing and writing aren't working, and I don't feel like inflicting myself on G2 in this condition. Maybe I'll hit a pillow. I don't know.

I Forgot Shipping!
General | Posted 18 years agoI just realized that I forgot to put the shipping costs down in my journal about commissions! Fixed it now, though. Shipping's $4 for the US, Canada, and Mexico; $10 for Europe and South America; $15 for everywhere else.
Here's the journal with updated info!

To My Commissioners (Status Update)
General | Posted 18 years agoI haven't forgotten about you guys, swear to the gods! I just haven't been feeling so hot for the past couple of days (major cramps), so my productivity's down.
Progress Report!
Lobo_Roo (Bambu Panda character sheet): Got all the sketches done, doing the transfer and layout to the nice paper now. Still to do: Inking and coloring. Estimated time of mailing: Within the week.
PAID
Prakash88 (smilodon character sketch): Still working on ideas, however I'm pretty sure I've got one picked out. Unfortunately I've run out of sealer, so I can't send the finished product until I get more. Still to do: Clean lineart, seal pencils.

Why Drama? (Warning: Long Post)
General | Posted 18 years agoPlease refrain from commenting on this journal unless you have read the whole thing and are replying to one of my points. This is an expression of my opinions meant to be taken into consideration and discussed in a rational matter. I am not participating in the drama which I will discuss, I am simply looking in on it from the outside.
Why is it that, when somebody expresses an opinion about something in their journal, picture description, or comment, it's so easy for it to blow up into a fight over an issue that has little to do with the original opinion? I usually like to give other people the benefit of the doubt if they make one somewhat hostile reply, because decisions made in anger are never very wise, but after two or more comments that seem like they're itching for a fight, I have to wonder whether the person cares at all about the subject under discussion. I realize that a lot of drama starts because people don't take the time to read long posts (a travesty, in my opinion; reading should never seem like something to be avoided) and jump to conclusions as a consequence, but after clarification from the original poster, a rational discussion in which each side's opinion and points are given fair thought should be possible.
Unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world like that. The issue I'm pointing to is, of course, the very recent drama involving a 25 year old guy who may or may not be in an explicit internet relationship with a very young girl (her age is unspecified, though it's been mentioned that she's just going through puberty). The evidence that something illegal may be happening is that he speaks about her as if she's a real person, and what looks like a snippet of a screencapped IM conversation makes up part of one of his art pieces. Now, I'm withholding judgment until something is proven, though I do think that if he is guilty of pedophilia he should be dealt with by the proper authorities.
The point of this journal is not to participate in the drama (hence the lack of links and names), but to try to provide an outside point of view that may help defuse some of it. The basic parts of this drama, and my responses to them, can be summed up as such:
1) Some people believe that this is a resurgence of the "cub art" drama from last year. That is untrue. Cub art, and whether it should be allowed on the site or not, is not the issue here. The issue is the fact that this man might be committing a real life crime and potentially damaging a child.
2) Some people believe that FA is "allowing" this to go on. I don't believe that, in fact I can't believe it. The case is almost certainly that the FA admins had no idea that this was happening. FA is a huge site, and the admins do all they can to keep it running smoothly for us. They most definitely wouldn't condone a real life crime.
3) Some artists are threatening to leave the site in response to this drama. While their presence here is ultimately their own choice, I would discourage this action, as it accomplishes nothing, and in fact draws the artist into the drama as an example after he or she is gone. The best thing to do is what I will be doing, which is remain on the site and refuse to participate in the drama. Drama thrives on attention, even the attention given by artists who leave. The best way to make it go away is to ignore it. The only attention I would give it would be to report it, but that has already been done by multiple people.

I also got 4 little chibis. Left to right: Serina chewing on emo!Lucifer's ear, Daniel Walker, and Elsie. Elsie says "Yarr!"

Lyenuv's very professional and quick, her prices are quite reasonable, and her work is made of awesome. If you get the chance, definitely commission her.

TRAVEL STORIES FROM HELL
General | Posted 19 years agoSo I'm stuck in Baltimore overnight. BOO SNOW. Yay overprotective parents. Got me a hotel room, and I'm having room service. I think I'll watch a movie too :D
Still, I wish it hadn't been such a hassle. I'm worried about my luggage. My copy of FFXII is in there!
...yeah, I'm a fangirl. Your point?
Anyway. Tired. Tomorrow's shaping up to be yet another long day. Nighty night, all!

50 Questions Redux
General | Posted 19 years agoThe few people who actually read my journals know that I've already done this meme one time with my character Elsinore Argent. Elsie, however, is only one side of me. There is also Liz, and she's quite different from Elsinore. While Elsie represents who I wish I was, Liz is who I really am.
(Note: I took out a few irrelevant questions and added a couple relevant ones as well)
1. What is your character's name?
Elizabeth Springer
2. How old is he/she?
19
3. What is your character's race/species?
Dragon
4. Does he/she have a crush?
Seems like my whole love live thus far has been a string of fruitless crushes.
5. Does he/she have many friends?
I like to think so.
6. What planet is your character from?
Earth.
7. Does your character like to eat?
Maybe a little too much...
8. What's his/her favorite food?
Mostly sweet stuff. Also sandwiches, because they're portable and I'm usually late for class.
9. What's his/her favorite drink?
Diet Cherry Coke. Also water.
10. Is your character annoying?
Sometimes not, sometimes yes. It depends on a variety of factors.
11. Is your character loved?
Again, I like to think so!
12. Is your character hated?
I don't know. I've never had anyone tell me outright that they hate me (not in a context that wasn't joking/teasing, anyway).
13. Is she/he straight, bisexual, or gay?
Mostly straight, though willing to be adventurous.
14. Is she/he a virgin?
Technically.
15. Name 3 hobbies
Reading, writing, drawing. Pretty normal stuff.
16. Is your character normal?
Painfully so.
17. Is your character attractive?
I'm not ugly, but I'm nothing to write home about. 5'9", kinda pudgy. My hair is my best quality, it's naturally curly.
18. How does your character handle emotions?
Not so great. I tend to shut myself in.
19. Does your character have other forms?
If I do, I've yet to discover them!
20. Does your character overreact?

23. Does your character have a disease/curse?
Nope. Unless you count near-constant writer's block and chronic insomnia.
24. Is your character dead?
Not yet!
25. Does your character have a family?
Yep! There aren't many of us, but we're supportive.

33. Does your character have any fears?
Heck yeah. Abandonment and rejection are way up there, and heights is a big one too.

Not right now, but I'm trying to gather the players for a pirate RPG!
37. Do you write about your character?
Ayep! Ch1 of the story's in my gallery right now!
38. Does your character have a bad temper at times?
If you badmouth her family or crew, sure. Also when she comes up against slavers.
39. Does your character get depressed?
She tries not to, but sometimes.
40. What's your character's favorite animal?
...Ummm...I dunno. She's got a pet sugar-glider named Timothy, but she doesn't really have a favorite animal.
41. Does your character have any fears?
Yeah, but telling you them would give away too much of the plot of the story.
42. Does your character have any weaknesses?
Yep. Green eyes, dark hair, and a nice set of abs.
43. Does your character look up to anyone?
Her grandfather, Gustave the Lion, and her father, Michael Argent.
44. Does your character like music?
She does indeed. She's actually got a really good singing voice.
45. What's your character's favorite type of music?
Er...sea shanties? What did they listen to back then, anyways?
46. Is he/she impatient?
Usually not.
47. What's something funny about your character?
She hates celery. The little stringy bits get caught in her front teeth.
48. Name 5 nicknames
Elsie.
Cap'n Argent.
Bunny (only her father EVER got to call her that, and he's dead now. No, you may not call her Bunny).
The White Devil (hahah, silly British Navy, always giving overly dramatic epithets to people it hates).
Ma'am, which is what you'll be calling her if you know what's good for you.
49. Does your character curse?
Fuck yeah.
50. This test is over, what does your character have to say?
"Best be keepin' yer hands where they belong, mister, lest ye should lose one!"
FOUND IT!
General | Posted 19 years agoI've finally found the music that inspires me to draw pics of Elsie!
And that music is...Aerosmith.
WTF?
Seriously. Any Aerosmith. The doodles and sketches just pour out. The weird thing is, I've never listened to them very much. Oh well, I'll take what I can get!
Valentine's pic to be appearing soon, as well as a character ref sheet for Elsinore.

ARRR MATEYS!
General | Posted 19 years ago"Avast ye sons of sea-cows and daughters of dogfish! Captain Elsinore Argent, feared 'round the world by Lobsterbacks and privateers alike, is makin' ready to set sail on a grand voyage! Be there any among ye brave enough to journey to the far corners of the map in search of adventure and riches?"
*Ahem* What my Rabbit alter-ego means is, I'm interested in starting an RPG, either through IM or a LiveJournal community, in which my dear pirate bunny, Captain Elsinore Argent, and a crew of loyal sailors would have ourselves some fun times, and we were wondering if anyone here would like to join us! I'm a very, VERY flexible person as far as this sort of thing goes, so the rules would pretty much go like this: No blatant anachronisms (such as modern weapons/clothing), no "God-modding" other players' characters without permission, and no mutinies. If that sounds agreeable to you, comment on this journal, or drop me a line through email: sarene87@bellsouth.net. Put "Pirate RPG" in the subject line so I can tell it's not spam.
I'll be playing the Captain, but I still need a First Mate. Other positions I've come up with so far are:
Master-at-Arms (trains the crew in fighting and looks after weapons)
Gunner (expert in BLOWING THINGS UP!)
Boatswain (in charge of all the sails, rigging, etc. that make the ship work)
Cook (very important!)
Navigator (where the hell are we, anyway?)
Ship's Carpenter (fixes what we break)
Ship's Doctor (also fixes what we break)
Intelligence Officer (gotta stay one step ahead of the Lobsterbacks!)
Rigging-rats (they make the sails do what they're supposed to)
Random Crew (the guys who do the odd-jobs)
And of course, if you can think of a job title for your character, then by all means suggest it, and I'll probably say "welcome aboard!"
So drop me a line if you're interested! I've got no set date to start this, though I've planned on starting when I've gathered a First Mate, Gunner, Cook, Navigator, and Doctor. I'll keep you guys updated, though.

Going Broke
General | Posted 19 years agoI'm just going to get straight to the point. I'm going broke. I did work a little over X-mas break, but the pay from that went right back into the internet, because I was mugged at my grandfather's burial. They stole my DS, and I officially win the sad game. Still, that's beside the point. The point is, I need $$! Luckily my parents are paying for tuition, and I got a scholarship that covers residence and dining fees, but I have zero extra cash. That means, while friends go out and do fun stuff, I sit all sad in my room and be emo. Now, this not being a desperate situation, I don't mind if things are few and far between, but I'd like to ask everybody to think about commissioning some art from me! I'm even knocking $5 off the prices in my information, which puts the current commish prices at something like this:
Pencil sketch, all shaded and pretty and clean (on high-quality computer paper, bonded to paper with spray so it won't smear): $5, $1 for each extra character
Inked lines, no shading (on nice thick paper, inked with copic multiliners): $10, $2 for each extra character
Finished colored pencil picture (on nice thick paper, prismacolor pencils, bonded to paper so it won't smear): $15, $2 for each extra character
Finished marker picture (on nice thick paper, prismacolor markers): $15, $3 for each extra character
The process goes like this: You ask me for a pic, specify however many characters and what they should be doing, and link me to any reference pics you'd like me to use. I draw a preliminary sketch and clean it up a little, then scan it/take a picture of it and email that to you. If you like it, you send me the money. If not, you tell me why, I tweak it, repeat the process. I keep working on the pic, and mail it to you as soon as I get the money or as soon as it's finished, whichever happens first. Everybody's happy!
Payment: As of now, I don't have a paypal account, but I hope to get one soon. Until then, I will accept cash and checks in the mail (allow extra time, usually 1 day, for checks to clear), or money transfers to my checking account at Bank of America (details on those can be gotten on request). When I get a PayPal account, i'll post a journal with the news thereof.
I'm also very flexible as far as prints, etc. For instance, I could scan an original into my computer, print it out on nice photo paper, and send both the print and the original to the commissioner for $0.50 per print. Other miscellaneous requests can be worked out when you request your commission.
I also do art trades, but as of right now I'm not taking requests, as the semester begins this Wednesday.
I also write! Writing is easy for me, so I'll write a story starring your character for free!
Contact me with commissions on IM: sarene87
Or email: sarene87[at]bellsouth.net (put "commission" in the subject line or I might think it's spam and delete it).
<3 you all!

No Subject
General | Posted 19 years agoSo I'm thinking about writing out the story of Pirate Bunny and her crew. Anybody interested?
No Subject
General | Posted 19 years agoRejoice, for the end of Janterm is upon us, which means I'll soon have a whole week where I don't have to do any homework, leaving me time to actually transfer, ink, and color those two sketches I uploaded!
Yay!
Yay!
Oops
General | Posted 19 years agoSo I posted journals at all four places (DevArt, here, and two places at LJ) where I'm a member saying I'd come back, and what do I do? Disappear from November through January with nary a word. I'm such a bad internet user.
I have a good reason though. My grandpa got sick in November, and for a long time it was all I could do to go to class. Some days I couldn't even manage that. I mean, this guy practically raised me for the first two years of my life, and there he was in California and me trapped in Massachusetts. Not that I'd be much help, but whatever. I just had zero inspiration. Anyway, he didn't make it, so I've been in CA for the past few days, cut off from my interweb access, but I get back tomorrow night, so expect some updates before the end of the month.
Thanks for not coming after me with pitchforks and torches!
