Gay Marriage and Why It's Harmless
Posted 12 years agoYes... It's 'that' topic. Recently I've been paying more attention to this particular subject seeing as how I'm growing older and older and may want to eventually settle down, I've come to realize that this is a rather important subject to me.
Recently I've been thinking about a number of things, Gay Marriage being one of them. and the reason why is a you tube video I found depicting a republican governor (Or senator, forget which) giving this speech about the issue, with a sprinkling of gay bashing involved. Now, being a gay man myself, I didn't take too kindly to having what I partake in be compared to things such as bestiality, incest, and the mere notion of me being able to marry a man being referred to as "an unnatural abomination."
Now she was raised to believe a certain way and I can't blame her for her upbringing, seeing as all of these passionate, radical ministers and politicians (both past and present) time and time again hold the main slice of christian America by lifting up the Holy Bible and claim that the bible itself refers to a man lying with another man as an "Abomination." Which it does. However, I don't think anyone on this debate/argument is even arguing their points correctly. If someone held a bible up to me and said, "How can you be gay and still be christian?" First of all, I'd point out that I'm an Ex-christian, (Lutheran to be precise.) and then I'd take the bible gingerly from their paws and say "I don't think this means what you think it means."
The specific book in question in the bible is Leviticus, therein resides the famous "Man lying with another man" verse. Now I've read the bible for myself back when I was undergoing Catechism. And a funny thing happens when you read the bible as the authors of the time intended it to be read. You see, the word "Abomination," if you trace it back to it's biblical roots doesn't mean "Unnatural" or "Morally Wrong." Instead, at the time the book was written, it's translation means more along the lines of "Non-Traditional" or "Against Tradition" as in, it wasn't considered normal for two men to sleep together. And honestly, that meaning makes more sense to me than the other, more popular definition. Even today, gay people aren't the norm. The best way I heard sexuality put was in terms of hand-dominance. "Most people are Right handed, Some people are left-handed, and very few can use either one." And considering that the Christian-Judeo god is, above all things LOVING, then this definition certainly makes more sense than the "I love all of the people of the Earth... except you guys." paradigm that proponents for the banning of Gay Marriage, and hating of homosexuality in general, claim to be correct.
Now, even if the supposed Immorality of Same Sex Marriages is thrown out, there are still a few things left going against the idea. A few that I've heard consist of "Marriage is a sacred bond used for progeny, which same sex couples cannot produce." This is true, same sex couples cannot reproduce, this is scientific fact... but wouldn't that be a good thing??? As things stand, for every one person that dies, about two people are born. this leads to overpopulation, depleted resources, and orphans overflowing from their care centers. I would think that same sex marriages would tackles these issues on not just one, but several fronts. Same sex couples won't be making any babies together anytime soon, but they may still want to raise a child of their own. Thus this would allow for orphanages to be less stressed and save money in the long run for the government and any agency that has their hands in state care. However, herein lies the next most common argument, "A gay couple will raise gay children and not be a healthy parenting environment." Now, I could bring up several cases and studies conducted by such universities as Harvard, Princeton, and many other Ivy Leaguers, as well as many Independent studies... but I don't have to. The existence of homosexuality Ipso Facto disproves this argument, because the first documented cases of gay children all throughout history as well as gay people today (Including myself) were raised by Straight couples. And if straight couples can raise gay children, then I highly doubt gay couples will raise gay children 100% of the time.
So what does that leave us... The only things I can think of now are those previous comments of Bestiality, Incest, ect... And to be honest, walk up to a gay person and talk to them, and while I admit I'm not normal (And damned proud of it :3) The vast majority of us are hardly the monstrous, immoral, depraved people I've seen various groups try to make us out to be.
