erithacuscreations now!NEW ACCOUNT
Posted 10 years agoUsername Change! (New Account!)
Posted 10 years agoAlright! I'm finally over at [ErithacusCreations]! Everything here will be uploaded over there sometime tonight, including a new NSFW piece that won't be uploaded here! Once everything's uploaded I'll post another journal here, that way if you don't want a flood in your inbox, you can follow after I've gotten everything uploaded.
Sorry for the trouble, but hopefully this won't be happening again, at least for a very long while! I don't see myself changing from EC to anything else at any point in the future <3
Have a good one, guys!

Username Change? (Opinions Please)
Posted 10 years agoSo I'm lookin to sorta unify my front and change my usernames on art sites over to ErithacusCreations instead of ErithacusRou, since over on tumblr my personal's at ER and my art blog is at EC. I just figure my art would be easier to find across websites y'know?
Would anybody re-follow over to a new account if I made one though? FA's where my biggest following is and I don't want to lose a whole lot by switching over.
My options are either:
1.) Wait and see if a name-change feature is pushed out once FA's site recode is done
2.) Just make a new account and not wait to see if that happens (lets be real, it won't. even though DA and Weasyl both have this option)
The name change is definitely happening! Just not sure when. Hopefully y'all don't mind and I can do it soon. I just need to know if I'm gonna risk losing a lot of you guys. :C

May Patreon + Sexual Content
Posted 10 years agoHeyo! A head’s up that May’s pledges are indeed being processed, and once they’ve been sorted out, I’ll hold the raffle! If you’re supporting me, please be sure to keep tabs on your Patreon messages!
In other news, I’ll be posting a sexual-themed piece here soonish, and I wanted to let everyone know that I do use FA's mature filters as intended. If you don't want to see sexual pieces, you're welcome to change your account settings to hide them!

Giveaway Queue!
Posted 10 years agoJust a heads-up that giveaway winners (and anybody else for that matter) can check progress through my queue! I've got a separate one for personal projects, but anything non-personal goes into a working queue here: https://trello.com/b/dFRKxKAq/erithacus-creations
New Icon?
Posted 10 years agoI attempted to change my icon, although it doesn't seem to have re-cached for me on my profile. Does it appear that way for anyone else or is my computer just having problems clearing out the cache?
Wanna See WIPs?
Posted 10 years agoI post WIPs on my Patreon! It’s only $1 a month to see them, plus you also get entered into a monthly art raffle! I just posted some sketches of the project I've been talking about wanting to have done before the giveaway ends.
I'm also trying to get better about crossposting journals. I usually post them on Tumblr and forget to post them anywhere else haha.

Art Update!
Posted 10 years agoAlrighty! Giveaway’s up (albeit later than I wanted), so now I can get started on art I owe. After that, commissions will be open again! No ETA on those so we’ll see how it goes. I’m hoping to have everything cleared out by May. I’ve got a little more free time to work on things now, so it’ll hopefully happen before then. Once the giveaway is over, I’ve also got a YCH piece I can put up as an auction.
You can view my queue here!

Another Year Older...
Posted 10 years agoTrying to be more personable on art platforms and I figure a birthday is probably something I could talk about? I’m not doing anything exciting because I work, although I had a nice get together yesterday. Since I’m finally 21 maybe I’ll be able to buy alcohol next paycheck? Haha we’ll see.
Art Update + Giveaway News!
Posted 10 years agoI just got approved for less hours at work, so I’ll be trying to churn out more art in the coming month.
I still have a couple heavy workweeks ahead of be before I get to the easier ones, though. I’ll be working on some smaller personal stuff until I have some time to sit down and work on commissions in a less scattered manner.
However! Once I’ve gotten the personal projects out of the way, I’ll actually be posting the giveaway! It’ll be relatively short (no longer than a month), and there will be multiple winners! I’ll work through my commission queue while the giveaway is going on, so I should be done with those by the time the giveaway is over. Then, after the giveaway, I’ll be opening up commissions again!
The next week itself isn’t too exciting. I’m hoping to get a small project finished (though my health will be the deciding factor in that), and I’m also celebrating my 21st birthday! So nothing much artwise, if anything at all.
Sorry for the lack of stuff, guys. Being a minimum-wage slave is hard. :C

+ Full Resolution Art
Posted 10 years agoHey guys! I've been busy with *real job stuff* so I haven't been around much. Not much art to show, but since I'll likely be getting a raise soon, I'll be able to cut my hours and draw more.
Announcement though: I'm not going to be uploading full resolution art anymore. If you want to see that, I'll be uploading it to Patreon! Images here won't be watermarked heavily, but they won't have all the juicy details you could see if you were a patron. WIPS and Full-Res art are available for $1 a month, and that also comes with an entry in a monthly art raffle! Cool, eh?
What's up with you guys though? I went to TFF recently and it was awesome! I've never been to a furry con so it was something new, at least. Hopefully I'll get some commissions done soon so I can open them back up again and work on promotional stuff, like art style examples for the commission form and flavor art for the Patreon page.

Removing Watermarks + Heyo New Watchers!
Posted 10 years agoYo! I've decided to remove the overlaid watermarks from my stuff in this gallery because I guess I'm gonna try to get more in the community and treating this site like a business venue without actually being approachable is kind of a moot point. Logos and smaller watermarks will still be there and full-res will still be on DA and Tumblr just because uploads get resized here and on Weasyl, but that's all for that.
Speaking of being approachable and friendly, how are you guys? I've gotten a few new watchers lately and I don't get a whole lot of comments so I wanna know how y'all are doin!

Don't repost people's art. It makes you a jackass.
Posted 11 years agoIf you want to repost their art somewhere, ask, and respect them if they decline.
If you don't respect them, realize that they can probably sue you.

Patreon Now Live!

Eyyyyyyyyy

Things that I am tired of hearing from other artists
Posted 11 years agoY'know what? I'm tired of feeling like shit because I'm decent at exactly one thing.
What you say: I'll never be that good!
What I hear: Feel bad about my lack of experience! Compliment me!
How I feel: What am I supposed to do? I can't hold your hand for 5+ years until you finally get confident enough to stop saying these things.
What I will do: Tell you why these comments hurt, and tell you how I learned.
Your plea for encouragement will go unheard if you constantly put yourself down. Many artists will offer tips and kind words, but it bogs you down when you hear it day-in and day-out. Remember that what you see in a piece of art is not someone's talent, but their experience. Experience is gained through practice. So practice.
What you say: Wow you're good! I might as well stop drawing now!
What I hear: I'm going to hide my insecurity behind a cheerful facade in an attempt to get you to reassure me that I have potential! or... I am going to be as explicitly depressed as possible to get a response out of you!
How I feel: I... Shit, I guess I should stop drawing too, since I only make people feel like shit about themselves.
What I will do: Probably not draw for a little while. Be sad. Think about life choices. Have another mid-week crisis. Then I will tell you why these comments hurt.
Please don't. This comment always hits hard for me, and it's really hard to continue working when you feel like you're either the reason someone wants to stop drawing, or you feel like you're only good at being a springboard for someone else's insecurity.
What you say: This reminds me of _____!
What I hear: I don't know how to comment on art, so I'm going to let you know I can make logical connections at a 3rd grade level while simultaneously making you feel like you're as original as a sparkledog!
How I feel: I honestly do not care unless the resemblance is uncanny, I have not noticed it before, and it was unintentional. Then I will probably feel like shit about my own art. And when I say I do not care, I don't mean "haha lol that comment is okay I will let it slide," I mean "I do not give a fuck what you have to say because at least my art is more original than your comment."
What I will do: Probably ignore you or straight-up tell you I don't care if I was already aware, don't know what you're talking about, or the resemblance isn't there. I don't have time for this. If I did not know, I will feel like shit about my art for some time because all people see in it is an unrelated fandom.
Like there is no point in comments like these other than having an excuse to make a comment on something you otherwise had no opinion on. Very unnecessary, and also very hurtful in some situations. Everything you create is inspired by something else. Whether it was a color you saw on someone's blog, a story you read in the newspaper, or the cute coat on your neighbor's dog. Nothing is original and we're all aware. No need to remind us.
What you say: (Extremely unoriginal "closed species") belong to me and you can't draw that thing that has one or two traits in common with them!
What I hear: I don't understand copyright and trademark laws, and I feel out of control when artists draw things that remind me that I can't own ideas or concepts!
How I feel: You are a stuck-up asshole and this is more funny than it is offensive or threatening.
What I will do: Laugh a little. Give you some resources on copyright and trademark laws.
Ideas and concepts do not fall under copyright law, because they are not tangible and cannot be pinned down. Species fall under the "intangible and subject to change at the will of the creator" category, and can't be protected. Characters are too, but that's a bit of a grey area. Characters are a single entity, unlike a species that can consist of many individuals that are all unique and separate from each other . The traits that make up a species are not original. Often, neither is the combination of traits that make up that species. You telling me that the winged wolf I drew for a commission looks just like your "Avilupus" species is completely coincidental, and things like these are also unsurprising to me, because I am aware that all art is consciously or unconsciously influenced by something else. Shocker.
What you say: Practice doesn't work when you lose your motivation and get depressed about how bad your art is!
What I hear: I draw casually and my desire to improve is not worth the effort I have to put in to gain experience.
How I feel: So I'm supposed to feel bad that you work through your difficulties by ignoring them? Oooookay.
What I will do: Agree with you and tell you to get back to practicing.
The thing about practice is that it stops working when you stop doing it. Even if drawing makes you cry because you're not good enough yet, keep doing it. Take a break, get some air, browse the internet, and then get back to drawing. If it's not working, get a set of fresh eyes and a fresh mind before coming back to it. If art is what you're set on, you have to continue, even when you don't want to. Pushing through a block is better than stagnating. This is how mature people work through difficult times. They just do them, whether or not they think they can. No thinking about how hard it is or how bad you are at it. Just do it.
What you say: But I've been drawing lions for 3 years and I still can't draw people, landscapes, wings, etc!!
What I hear: I am under the impression that a wide variety of experience will magically come to me by drawing the same thing over and over.
How I feel: No shit! Draw something different.
What I will do: Tell you why you're not improving and direct you to specific references that will help you.
Practice is not drawing the same thing over and over and expecting remarkable improvement in all areas. It's actively looking up resources, using reference while you're working, asking others for critique, watching other artists work, and most importantly, being willing and eager to learn about everything, from the decomposition of organic matter, to the circulatory system, to the growth pattern of feathers on a bird. Look for patterns, or a lack of patterns. Separate something flat into something layered, or merge something layered into something 2-dimensional. Learn to see in 2-D, then in 3-D, and then in 2-D again.
I am not usually this much of an asshole, but it's upsetting to see so many artists being put down by attention solicitation under the veil of a compliment. It's upsetting to me, and it's upsetting to others.
If you read all this, in the true fashion of the internet art community, you get a cookie. I also red-line art for free. And I am usually pretty willing to help you find reference if you need some.
What you say: I'll never be that good!
What I hear: Feel bad about my lack of experience! Compliment me!
How I feel: What am I supposed to do? I can't hold your hand for 5+ years until you finally get confident enough to stop saying these things.

If I have made art for you or sold art to you...
Posted 11 years agoIf I have made art for you and not given you permission to post it anywhere, YOU MAY NOT POST IT ANYWHERE.
Exclusive rights to my art are not built in because you purchased something from me or I created something for you. All art I have created, whether the characters contained belong to me or not, is my intellectual property. As soon as a piece of art is created, the copyright belongs to the artist unless negotiated otherwise. If I have sold or created a character design for you, you do not own the art of the character I created; you paid for the design. Bottom line: I created this art, and unless there is a written agreement between us, it is still my art and under my copyright.
More about this on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright The portions pertaining to obtaining copyright and the transfer of copyright are most relevant here. Copyright is automatic in countries where Berne Convention standards apply (this includes the US as of 1988), and copyright can only be transferred in writing with the artist's signature under the US Copyright Act.
I have revised my terms of service here: https://sites.google.com/site/erith.....rms-of-service to avoid this trouble in the future.
If I have given you permission to post my art to personal sites, I cannot revoke that agreement. However, I would appreciate if you would remove it from your galleries if you have uploaded it anywhere. I cannot make you do anything, but it would ease my mind to know that all my art is controllable in my own galleries and that I don't have my old high-school art floating around where I do not want it.
Our rights as artists are non-negotiable. Read up on copyright in your area to protect youtself from exploitation. Thank you for your time, and have a nice day.
Additionally, if you have commissioned me and would like to provide feedback, you may do so here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1K3.....?usp=send_form
