Where I've been
Posted 5 years agoI'm not gonna lie. The last 12 months have been rough.
Anyone who knows me also knows my headspace is kind of a mess. Relentless bullying while I was in high school and college had left me with negative self-esteem and oyster-level social skills. Paired with very *high* familial expectations, this made for a very bad combo, and turned me into a world-hating, bitter person. Something I then vented into art, be it doodles in the margins of my school notebooks to full fledged comics.
The problem with that, of course, is that while it made me productive, I was still feeling terrible.
I've been seeing a therapist for years now, and I've been doing steady progress. The very fact I'm able to recognize how I've been feeling and why is proof of it. I've been able to let go of the past, let go of anger and bitterness, and overall becoming much more *stable*. Only problem of course is that it dried up my art drive fuel source, and so I've been able to do less and less art... until I pretty much stopped last year.
For that last year, I've been in a transition period. I've been working on my social skills ; I found a local group of furry friends and we've been having a great time chatting and partying (even if the quarantine paused that for a while). We're planning a week-long camping holiday in September. I'm also looking for a big apartment to share with a couple of them, so I can get out of my smallass overpriced apartment. I'm switching my art drive fuel source to something more positive. I'm starting to have art itch again.
If everything goes according to plan, I will be in my new home, ready to art again, before the end of 2020. Fingers crossed.

I'm not dead.
Posted 6 years agoSo, uh, yeah. i apologize for the total radio silence for so long. I've been through a particularly nasty bout of depression and I've had energy for basically nothing for most of summer, to the point that even going out to buy food was an insurmountable effort some days. It's been... frustrating to say the least.
The good news is that I'm getting new meds for my depression now. Hopefully they'll kick in fast so I can get back on track with art and evertything else. Wish me luck.

Almost back to normal
Posted 6 years agoWork has slowed down considerably recently due to stomach problems following food poisoning, and my brain flushing out the remainder of the anxiety meds. I'm resting right now, and I'm planning on going back to regular work schedule by next Monday.
Thanks for your patience.

Where the heck have I been (a rocky start to 2019)
Posted 7 years agoWelp, this has been a bad two months, work wise. Back in December I took 2 weeks to spend the holidays with my family, so i didn't get any work done. The plan was to go back home at the start of January, and get back to work right away.
Let's just say things didn't go according to plan.
I caught a nasty cold when leaving my parents' place, which put me out of commission for a week. Then I got tendinitis in my left shoulder, which left me unable to draw even with the painkillers (seriously nothing like getting stabbing pain when lifting one's arm... or putting one's arm on the desk... or turning in bed).
And when that was over, I and my therapist realized I had been somewhat misdiagnosed for a while. I don't suffer from depression but from anxiety. Good news, right ? Well yeah, we're going to fix things up now, but stopping antidepressants has lead to a nasty case of detox that left me with a persistent feeling of emptiness and no energy for a while. Blargh.
So yeah, that's pretty much the whole of January down the drain, but I'm recovering. Hopefully starting the anxiety meds will be less severe of a speed bump and I'll be able to be productive in February. I need to finish my comms.

2018 : Dawn of the last day
Posted 7 years agoWell... 2018 was honestly a load of shit. Depression hit me real hard and I didn't do much in the first 6 months. Then I wanted to move out of my apartment (I had been living in there for 8 years) and, due to a goof on my part, I had to find a new place in limited time and I ended up having to settle on a smaller, more expensive apartment. At least it's on the first floor so my cats can get out... I've also had problems controlling my little overeating demon and I gained weight. And, if that bullshit wasn't enough, my grandma passed away in December after years of being sick. I barely recognized her on her deathbed, she was so old and skinny.
But I suppose all was not bad this year. I've been an uncle since May. I started exercising a little. I found a great coworking place, where I can work without distraction and meet new, interesting people. Thanks to that, I've been pretty productive in these last months, and I've even started work on making Chimaera High into a video game. Also, I and my therapist are going to force that little gluttony demon out of my head and that will (hopefully) be the end of my overeating episodes. I'm also thankful to you, my fans, who stay loyal to me and my art.
So while 2018 was a load of crap, I have good hope for 2019. I'll consolidate my good work rhythm and make good art, lose weight and get better health, and overall improve my life. Let's make 2019 into a good year.

On holiday break
Posted 7 years agoI'll be spending the next two weeks with family for the holidays, and it's unlikely I'll be able to work while I'm there. I'll be resuming work on commissions in January, with the goal of finishing all my current queue (and take in a new batch) before the 31st.
Happy holidays to you all :)

Looking for posters
Posted 7 years agoMy walls are still blank after 2+ months after moving in and it's starting to annoy me. Does anyone has suggestions about good websites to buy posters ?
Thank you :)
Thank you :)
Pretty busy
Posted 7 years agoSorry for disappearing for so long. I've been pretty busy IRL, mostly because I'm planning to move into a new apartment in July. I'm also trying to reintroduce exercise in my life, and all of this stuff has taken a fair bit of my time and energy so I haven't been able to work much.
My current projects are :
- Move IRL
- Finish my comms (3 left)
- Make more personal art because I'm rusty
- Toy around with Visual Novel Maker and see if I have what it takes to make something with it.
Oh and for those curious, tomorrow (June 17th) is my birthday. Thanks for sticking with me :)

Slowly recovering + asking for anime suggestions
Posted 7 years agoI think the main problem with my artblock, other than the bout of depression I'm going through, has been the crippling lack of media consumption. I just haven't been reading or watching enough stuff for my brain to get base material to art with.
In order to fix that problem, I started a bit of an anime binge among other things, and I'm hoping I'll be back to normal operation in the next weeks. Is there any anime series/movies that you would recommend me to watch ?

I'm not dead
Posted 7 years agoSorry for the recent radio silence. Depression has been a real bitch for more than 2 months now and I haven't been able to draw much. I made some progress on the next Chimaera High page though.
I'm also taking new meds so hopefully the situation will get unstuck soon. I'll keep you guys posted

Posted 7 years agoI've had a severe case of artblock for almost two months now. I'm going to visit my parents this weekend, hopefully the change of scenery will help reset my brain.
What's happening this year
Posted 8 years agoI've stagnated for a bit too long recently. Fortunately, my recent Brazil trip and a very productive discussion with my brother have shaken things up for me, and so I've decided to make changes to the way I work this year. The goal is to make art both more enjoyable and more sustainable an activity.
1. Splitting my SFW and NSFW art [DONE]
Both from a professional and personal standpoint, this needed to happen. I can't really tell family or friends what I do without being at least a little evasive, and that's saying nothing of potential professional contacts in the future. So I'm making it so looking for "Ethan Qix" online will turn up SFW results. If someone wants to check my more adult works, they'll still be able to by going to @@SquidSushi, but at least they shouldn't just stumble upon it.
2. Having an actual workplace [IN PROGRESS]
There are coworking spaces I can use where I live. Right now, the one I'm interested in has no vacancy, but they should have some in February. Having a real workplace I need to go to, I need to get dressed for, and where I can meet people should improve my productivity significantly (not to mention allow me to socialize IRL).
3. Focusing my efforts on my webcomic Chimaera High [IN PROGRESS]
I've neglected my webcomic for too long in an attempt to make my Patreon Weeklies a source of revenue. This attempt, as far as money goes, is a complete failure. I've actually lost Patreon money over time, and I feel people (apart from a handful of loyal fans) are just not that interested in voting in my picture polls. What seemed like a good idea at the time (I was pretty proud of it !) revealed itself to be not so great in the long run.
By focusing back on my webcomic, and rebuilding my Patreon around it, I'm hoping the more consistent content will be appealing enough to make a living off it. To be blunt, I need a product to sell, and most successful Patreons have been built around recurring content such as comics, video series, etc. I'll still offer commissions and the like but it will become a more secondary activity. The Squid will get his own separate Patreon, where I might reestablish pictures as rewards.
Hopefully everything goes right. Wish me luck ^^
