summer sounds
Posted 15 years agoi saw a couple people doing this & thought it might be a fun thing.
so i made a mix!
http://8tracks.com/temno_spondylus/.....-july-2010-mix
just some songs i've been particularly fond of lately, as well as a few things i tend to listen to on a regular basis.
if you dig it, cool!
if you don't, that's cool too.
to each their own ^^
so yeah, hope you guys have had a pleasant summer thus far!

Posted 15 years agohello friends!
i hope you're all doing well in one way or another.
as for me, well... not so good.
actually that's a huge understatement, i've been in a really bad state for months now.
i've never been too sure where to stand in regards to divulging personal info online.
looking back through my gallery & past journals, i end up feeling like a total asshole. some of those older posts... i just sound so fucking arrogant.
well, i mean...... i was arrogant. i had no idea just how fast & easily things can come crashing down.
so i think i'm gonna have to sort through & delete a fair few things. so much changes in just one year, let alone four. There are just too many things in my gallery that have nothing to do with me anymore.
i guess the proverbial floor is long overdue for a good sweep.
i'd been meaning to put these thoughts into words for a while now. There's a fair deal more i'd like to write, but i'll save it for now so as not to risk sounding like an asshole again.
for some odd reason (or perhaps several), it's become increasingly difficult to even just speak what's on my mind, let alone write.
though i do feel a little better having written this much.
at least there's that.

no true beauty without decay
Posted 16 years agoHi again! Haven't checked in for a little while.
I realize your all busy and whatnot, but for those of you who are as bored and jobless as i am, i'll list off the various events & festivities i've partaken in since about mid-Oct.
- An evening with Robert Crumb, discussing his latest work (among other things)
- Santa Monica blvd. Halloween parade.
- DEVO performing their first album in its entirety. really one of the best shows i've ever seen. (awesome opening act too, Reggie Watts)
- Applied for a job (for the very first time)
- Withnail & I screening / Q&A with Bruce Robinson
- Helped my brother tape off & paint a huge sign for a friend's vintage clothing & antique store. (all-nighter)
- Volto
- Went & saw A Serious Man twice. leave it to the Coens to make an Orthodox Jewish stoner film.
- ACCD grad show
- Skinny Puppy
I think that's about it. Sculpting a lot. Aiming to make a whole series of small resin busts.
All the while watching Jodorowsky films w/ commentary. it's cool because he explains almost everything....... almost :l
Hope all is well. i'll try & post a few things within the week.
Take care ^^

apology
Posted 16 years agoSo that art flood turned out to be a false forecast... I'm very sorry about that. A fair few problems decided arise simultaneously.
Thus, I've been dealing with a shit-ton lately (mostly medical & employment issues). I'm hoping to have this all be dealt with relatively soon.
Anyway... happy October, friends!

pages & more pages
Posted 16 years agoso i've been scanning a shit-ton.
didn't realize i had so many sketchbooks. i'd never stacked them all up before. goes back to about 04... at least the stuff i'm bothering to scan.
downloaded Genius Party Beyond recently. if you enjoy beautifully executed & conceptually rich animation, i HIGHLY recommend it. the first one (just Genius Party) is also quite nice, but Beyond has works by Koji Morimoto AND Tatsuyuki Tanaka, so i feel like it kinda takes the cake.
i've found out about so many great animations from people on this site. figured i'd give back a bit.
if it's old news, well... sorry. hope it's new to most ^^

hello again
Posted 16 years agoIt's been a little while... few months. A few very enjoyable months. Went to some truly awesome screenings & events. I'll list the really cool ones ^^
- Midnight showing of Motel Hell
- Screening of True Stories hosted by Tim & Eric. They showed a few other things too. Some skits from season cinco and something they're doing for HBO. One of those things that makes me really happy i live so close to hollywood.
-AMPAS honoring Hayao Miyazaki. The theater also had a rather large exhibit of background paintings and cels divided between two floors. A beautiful, comprehensive history of Japanese animation. Probably the highlight of my year thus far, and all made possible by
Weazal. Thanks again man!
- Venice drum circle........ aaactually, that was kinda shady. i did buy some nice sunglasses though.
Good times, & hopefully more good times to come. Might go backpacking up in King's Canyon later in the month.
i got a massive book of Italian high Renaissance & Baroque sculpture... think i'll look through that for a while, then work, then kush -__-
hope you're all having a nice summer.
btw, old drawing flood imminent.

clusterfuck traveltime
Posted 16 years agohi. sorry this looks like some kind of pointless, meandering essay...... i guess it kind of is.
well... first off, i went on a ten mile hike yesterday. scaling cliffs & wading through deep water, nearly getting swept away several times by the ridiculously strong current. all this to hang out on an old cement bridge in the middle of nowhere with a drop of over 300 feet. i think it was part of a highway construction project started in the 1920s. then a flood swept away most all the road they had lain down, leaving only the one bridge fully intact. so the project was abandoned in the mid-late 30s.
VERY surreal once you're on it, & the hike really kicked my ass. sooooooo much walking & climbing. my toenail might end up falling off, i'm not too sure tho. it is getting pretty dark :[
so i guess i'm going about this backwards then. alright.
took two trips to santa cruz, last trip was to stay with family. nice to be there again, fruit trees & flowers all over the place, & a really cool old cemetery too. my friend got me into archery while i was out there. very fun. something i'd definitely like to continue doing.
visited the east coast as well, sometime in early march. saw some great artwork in brooklyn. tried to go to a gallery opening of John Water's artwork, but it was closed when we got there. must have gone down earlier in the day. oh well. we went to a bar instead, left after a while, got a very filling falafel for 3$ and promptly thereafter got stuck waiting for the LIRR until 3:30 am... good people-watching, but still quite a shitty inconvenience
the main reason for our trip was to attend a bar mitzvah in Connecticut, & that we did. it was in westport. interesting place... BIG houses.
while there:
- saw my friend do his torah portion. very nice ceremony.
- my brother slapped some kid half his age because the kid was being an asshole & deserved it,
- got a terrible headache
- slept for a bit
- got up & went to partake in festivities
- ate a delicious dinner
- saw groups of 12 & 11 year-olds enthusiastically playing roulette & blackjack :I
-smoked herb with my dad for the first time... amongst other various family & friends (at that point the day didn't even seem real anymore).
- back at our hotel room, i went to sleep.
following morning, drove back to NY, packed up & flew back home.
so that was my action-packed east coast adventure... i know, nothing noteworthy. whatever. take it or leave it. just some goings-on in the recent past.
as for now... i'm more or less unemployed. no sculpting work for a while now. trying to make artwork worth having in a gallery, not just my usual sketchbook smatterings. i do have an opaque projector, might as well start using it. also finally put shelves up in my room
i'll be submitting art every so often, but i've got to be kinda scarce for a while. no way i'll ever be gone for good, there's just a lot of work to be done. i'm probably gonna have to submit my portfolio to other studios. fuck knows where i'll end up.
also, this screen really does negatively affect my eyes. so yeah... scarcity due to that as well.
i hope you're all doing alright & enjoying yourselves, for better or worse :]
take care, friends.

I'm heading off to the desert for a bit. The ever inspiring & mysterious DEATH VALLEY.
As good a time as any to re-connect with one's self and the earth, exploring some of its purest and most extreme surfaces & forms.
Also paying a visit to Barker Ranch... should be interesting >:]
_______
Several things have affected my life over this past year, some not for better. I'd just like to say how thankful i am for everything i'm privileged enough to have in my life. Be they basic senses of hearing/sight/touch, the ability to use my hands for creative means (physical health as a whole), or the warmth and familiarity of home, family & friends. I do my very best to keep such things in mind at all times.
A great big thank you to all the kind folks & fellow artists on this site who offer such wonderful insight & encouragement (and support during those particularly dark periods of instability).
& much thanks to all my recent watchers. Sorry i'm not present nearly as often as i would like to be. Hope you're all still enjoying the little cabinet of curiosities i've accumulated here over the past two some years.
Good health and well-wishes to all.
I'm hoping for a year of comforts aplenty and a great many fortuitous occurrences.
Happy '09 everyone!

Posted 17 years agoNo one tagged me, just saw this going around...
1) What was your FIRST video game console?
-First game i ever played was Myst on my friend's PC. As for consoles, TurboGrafx & NES. first one i owened was SNES.
2) Name a few games you played on said console.
-Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair, Galaga, Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure.... i only ever played Zelda & Ghosts 'n Goblins on the NES. for years i collected shitty point & click PC games riding on the coattails of Myst. none ever came close but i had fun playing them nonetheless. 9: The Last Resort was very fun & extremely difficult. The SNES games..... i'm too lazy to list them all (a friend let me have her entire collection. sooo many games).
3) Excluding handhelds, how many VG consoles do you own presently?
-SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, & Gamecube (collecting dust, unfortunately. been meaning to sell it). I don't have any handhelds.
4) Were you a Street Fighter nut? Any character in particular?
-Not really. I watched my brother play it a few times... about 9 years ago.
5) Do you think Capcom is a FUCKING awesome company with kickass character designs?
-well, i really like Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts & Demon's Crest. Resident Evil is cool but the controls are really difficult. I can't think of others at the moment. The designs are okay... it's more a nostalgia thing in regard to Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
6) Here's the scenario.. You had some friends over and you all ate FRIED CHICKEN! After the meal you all decide to play some video games. As your friend reaches for a controller you notice his/her hands are very "greasy." Are you the type that would insist they wash their hands before pawing the controller, or is it no big deal?
-Um... okay. I guess so long as their fingers aren't DRIPPING with chickengrease, getting under the buttons & fucking up the inner workings, it'd be alright (i'm none too protective of my things unless there's a possibility of permanent damage). yeah it's a bit uncouth but whatever. their loss anyway, trying to play a video game with greasy hands.
7) What's your favorite RPG/Action RPG?
-Chrono Trigger is great. I haven't played many Final Fantasy games, but the ones i did play were quite fun... just can't recall much to say for sure.
8) Do you prefer 2D games or 3D games?
-I like both. Depends entirely on the game's contents & programing.
9) Are you an SNK fan?
-Haven't really played anything having to do with SNK. i'm not fit to judge.
9) Are you good at DDR?
-i honestly can't stand that game.
10) Who wants to kick that dog's ass from Duck Hunt?
-All i remember from that game is the clay pigeons. I only ever watched people play it. Not a fan.
11)Have you skipped out on important events in life because of video games?
-Not so much. I've shirked plenty of schoolwork though.
12) Do you listen to video game music?
-Well... when not actually playing a video game, the only bits of video game misic i've sought out are the fortune teller music from A Link to the Past & the potion shop from Ocarina of Time. the shadow temple too.
13) Have you ever cosplayed a VG character?
-no
14) Have you ever been in an arcade playing a fighting game, KICKING ASS, and then some 6 year old asian kid comes in and OWNS YOU??
-haven't been to an arcade in years. But even so, I just stick to skee ball.
15) Name three games you would love to see remakes of if it was done properly.
-Shit... all that comes to mind is Ocarina of Time. I love that game sooo much. It'd just be interesting to see how it would turn out... what programers would elaborate upon & such. Also because Twilight princess was such a disappointment. the character design is just horrendous & it became very obvious after playing for a bit that the game was only made to showcase the glorious Wii technology. all other aspects of game design were placed second. No horror-themed dungeon of any sort & hardly any good side quests to boot. hmmm, it'd be interesting to see a good remake of Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
16) Mario or Sonic?
-Mario. specifically Super Mario Bros 2 (i.e. reprogramed Doki Doki Panic).I love the oddball games in a given series.
17) When a movie shows up in the theaters, let's use Spider-man as an example, are you likely to buy the GAME version?
-Fuck no.
18) What is your LEAST favorite genre of video games? (ex. fighting, sports, shooters, etc.)
-Sports. Save for THPS & 1080° on N64. are those sport games? i guess.....
19) Is there a game out there that you feel was unique and didn't get enough love?
-Nothing's coming to mind.
20) Have you ever verbally abused a game because you couldn't beat one of the levels and/or bosses?
-Yeah. Mostly the PC point 'n click puzzle-filled games.
21) Do you own any VG apparel?
-Nope.
22) What are your thoughts on the live-action Super Mario Bros movie?
-John Leguizamo seems to be a real jinx on most the films he's cast in (e.g. Spawn D:). I still like Bob Hoskins though... not as Mario. Just as an actor. He's really quite awesome, especially in small roles like his spot in Brazil.
23) On that note, what did you think about the live-action Street Fighter movie?
-Never saw it, but I'm gonna assume it's a great deal similar in quality to Double Dragon.
24) Who's hottest out of the KOF chicks?
-Never played KOF.
25) Do you say "old-school" a lot when you're having a VG conversation with others?
-No.
26) Have you ever lent someone a game and they returned it to you damaged?
-Not damaged in the literal sense, but one time my friend's little brother somehow erased all my saved files from a game i had lent her.
27) Do you own any imported games?
-Yes indeed. Cho Aniki for PS1..... it's horrifically homosexual. Apparently part of a whole series - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cho_Aniki
28) Are you ready for this meme to be over, or could you keep going?
-Most certainly.
29) In this scenario, let's pretend you're going to get a video game tattoo! What would you get and where? This can be simple or elaborate.
-I honestly cannot think of anything. Also, i'm not one for marking or accessorizing in any way. I don't even wear a watch.
30) Have you ever cried after you beat a game? If so why?
-I haven't cried, just general sadness. When i beat Ocarina of Time because it was such an incredible game. it wasn't so much the ending itself, but rather the act of beating it & the credits finally going back to the title screen. Just the fact that it was all over made me sad. Same with Myst & Riven.
-Most certainly.

prop 8 (attention california residents of voting age)
Posted 17 years agofirst off, i'm not one to talk politics because i tend to word myself very poorly. also, politics are the last thing i'd ever want to be involved in. however, this issue calls for discussion. regardless of your location or even age, it's extremely important to know what is a stake here. to realize how narrow-minded & change fearing people can be. what other destruction of basic rights might this lead to if passed?
as written in other journals, & kind of copy-pasted here-- this proposition, if it passes, will amend the california state constitution to include the phrase, "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in california."
the purpose of this journal is basically to bring light to the fact that people are attempting to strip california residents of basic human rights, & just how fucked up/ terrifying this is.
like i said above... not so skilled at discussing political issues.
just trying to spread the word.

"breathe, breathe, breathe deeply"
Posted 17 years agoWell... where to begin.
Just went to the Bernini exhibit at the Getty with my brother and two dear friends. It was more-so a delightful medley of Baroque sculpture, not just Bernini's work. Also got to see The Vexed Man Messerschmidt bust. Fucking beautiful. The piece was titled after the artist's death, so no one knows for sure what emotion he was trying to convey. Oh!
ArseMaus and his lady were there too. Good times.
Ah, on to why i've been a bit more present lately.
I'm basically on a witches brew of meds that somehow make it possible for me to function and enjoy life to a certain degree. I've been able to get out more and actually produce a little artwork. After months of being strangled by depression and fear, i'm out and about again, but keeping things in perspective. Praying that this isn't just temporary, like past instances of expensive medical trial & error. I'm at the point where... my eye problems are getting worse regardless, so i might as well do my best to work around it.
Only problem's the excessive sleep and weight loss. Like..... scary weight loss. Ten pounds in less than two months, and i was lanky to begin with. I blame the lexapro for that much. & thanks to klonopin, i've never slept so deeply or extensively. A fucking plane could crash in front of my house and i wouldn't even shift.
Onward... here's my sweltering summer in a nutshell --
hiked up and over the hollywood hill/mountain, from forest lawn all the way down into hollywood (took all day). Went cliff diving on the solstice. Went backpacking. Briefly stayed with a friend in santa cruz. Promptly thereafter flew to NY. Went to connecticut briefly. Flew back. Got a new bike. Drove back out to santa cruz on a whim. Found a fern cave! Stopped by SF briefly. Drove back home.
I think that's about it.
Sooooo yeah, expect a little artwork and some pictures soon.
& that really sucks about the whole art theft thing, though i'm still a bit confused. All i know for sure is that there are a whole lot of shitty people in the world and not nearly enough cool ones.
That aside, I hope you folks are all doing well.
