long fucking road
General | Posted 18 years agoWARNING - this journal contains depressing info about recent goings-on. Not as bad as the last one. I've got a better grasp on things... kinda.

Well, first off i'd like to thank you folks for the kind words & well wishes. It helped. I would have been a mess otherwise.
So i've pretty much figured out what's wrong with my eyes. A little something called HPPD, as well as lattice degeneration... for good measure i suppose :/
So this shit is partially my fault. Unbeknownst, yes, but still my own doing. I thought acid was harmless for the most part, at least for a single try... now i can't even have a beer without aggravating my condition. Even caffein makes it worse.
Basically, i can never smoke weed (among other things) ever again if i want my eyes to get better... alright, i can live with that. But even so, it'll take months, even YEARS, before i see any manner of progression. It's already been two months... nothing yet.
I got the lattice degeneration diagnosis after a good hour & 45 on the phone, being transfered from one person to the next then back to the first & so-on. don't know why the doctor couldn't have just told me when i was right there in front of him. I do believe opthamologists are trained to assume you're lying unless you are clearly well on your way to blindness.
So thanks to the degeneration, there's new floaters every week or so. My vitreous is like a fucking kelp bed. I jest my smoking habits initiated all this. As it turns out, 2-3 bowls a day for six years = not so good for the brain-pan :0
The good news is that there is no sign of retinal detachment whatsoever. Weakness, yes, but no holes or tears. My vision is quite good. I'd go so far as to say it's too good (MRI actually showed too much activity in the occipital lobes).
All the should've, could've, would've shit won't help me one bit. As my dad says, "Eyb bobe volt gehat eyer, volt zi gevezn a zeyde" - (If my grandmother had balls, she'd have been my grandfather).
I'm just doing my best to maintain optimism. I'll just keep doin' my thing. it's all i can do, really. My job keeps me busy & sculpture is the best art form i can go for at the moment.
Another bit of sadness. We had to put my dog to sleep this past tuesday. Couldn't eat, couldn't walk... she had to go.
A little back history -
She was born in my house... i think it was 94. the runt in a litter of 10 golden retrievers (the only one we kept). Guess you could say we grew up together. She ended up out-living the whole litter (Would've been 14 this May).
We miss her very much. the house feels almost hollow. i'm just spending a lot of time with my mom, helping with the garden & such.
I had stopped drawing indefinitely (trouble working on blank surfaces), but i've decided to try and make the best of a bad situation.
So yeh, expect some cool things in the near future :]

time out
General | Posted 18 years ago Sorry for my not being around much lately... explanation is long overdue.
I've got some eye troubles. They've been getting progressively worse over the past three & a half years, much more so within the past two weeks. I've never said anything because it hasn't affected me too horribly 'till as of late... figured i'd spare bothering you guys my ailments, but now i seek help.
Anyone here have floaters? Like... really bad ones? How about hundreds upon hundreds of little swarming spots filling your entire field of vision when attempting to look at anything even remotely bright? Kinda rare in young folks, but... just thought i'd ask. No opthamologist has been of any help. They just treat me as though I'm wasting their time.
Art has become somewhat of a struggle, which in turn has brought on a great deal of anxiety and panic. It's very difficult to think straight. Haven't been able to make anything for a while now and I'm scared shitless that these problems may cost me my job. I'm trying to not let it get to me but goddamn it's really fucking difficult.
These recent events have called for me to alter several aspects of my life... considerably. Early to bed, change in diet, no THC for several months :( , and a lot less starring at screens. This means I'm going to be quite scarce for a while. At least until some manner of healing occurs. So I won't really be on top of favorites, comments, replies, etc. Sorry guys.
Rest assured, I'm not disappearing completely. This place has a tendency to cheer me up, and there's simply no ignoring all the beautiful artwork in perpetual upload. FA is like a vena cava coursing with creative energy, thanks to the awesome artist folk. You guys rock (:
I realize that things could be MUCH worse, and i am extremely thankful to actually posses eyesight, as well as all the comfort, love and support which permeates my life... some people aren't so lucky. I do my very best to keep this in mind AT ALL TIMES.
A great big thank you to all my recent & future watchers, and best wishes to all in the new year!!!!
Peace

music meme & my trip in brief
General | Posted 18 years agoMusic is VERY important.
most of you know this already, but i fugured what's the harm i saying?
1) List your favorite three music genres:
metal (the rare, good kind)
rock (the rare, good kind)
experimental/alternative/etc.
2) Give a list up to ten of your current favorite artists
Nine Inch Nails
Tool
Melvins
Kyuss (Sky Valley and Circus Leaves Town)
Marilyn Manson (portrait - antichrist)
Mike Patton (esp. Bungle and Fantomas)
Pixies
Pigface (earlier works)
Radiohead
old blues and folk music
3) List up to 5 genres you dislike/hate
pop
smooth jazz
bad metal
bad rock
motivational/the stuff they play at Kinko's
4) Why?
vvolfen and AD summed this portion up nicely. Though, on a personal note, smooth jazz makes me uncomfortable and nauseous. it's true, i become physically ill in the process of listening to that shit.
5) Name 3 artists from despised genres.
wouldn't know the band names. i try not to think about it much.
6) Are you a Mainstream Sheep/Herd Person, Undergroundist or somewhere between the two?
i'm not sure how to answer this question. i mean... i listen to Alice in Chains and bands that are/once were played on the radio.
7) How many PHYSICAL CDs do you own?
i've got about 50 or so in my room. others i've entrusted to my brother who is super organized, so everything is alphabetical and safe.
8) Where do you purchase your music primarily?
Amoeba

Hello all !!!
Baja was awesome. the location was a desert island in Magdalena Bay (whale breeding grounds in winter). it's a surf spot. Tent-equiped camp sites, shower with a gallon jug, small staff of locals and a chef. i tried to surf but failed. The ocean doesn't like me very much, save for tide pools. Tide pools kick ass. the island itself is all cliff & rock, no beach whatsoever. & there's a kind of mountain in the middle, which i climbed. all the plants look dead but aren't. scattered by the millions throughout the island are old shell parts and chiton plates, way up on these cliffs and petering out toward the mountain's slope. Lots of bones too... and jackrabbits. those fuckers are huge.
Aparently the fishing there is really good too (Ahi, Yellowtail, Skipjack, and Halibut, to name a few). i didn't fish tho. just ate the resulting bounty.every so often there'd be stingrays leaping out of the water in the distance. sometimes 2, sometimes 15. three feet in the air and flapping wildly, coming down with a thick slap. guess they were feeding.
We went shell-collecting and kayaking through mangroves and played Yahtzee and had stomach problems and it was really fun to get away for a bit.

nature fun
General | Posted 18 years ago i went on a crazy waterfall hike in malibu canyon yesterday. it was my second visit to the location, my first being last summer 'round August.
it's required that you park relatively far from the trail head, in a small lot immediately off PCH. so the first bit is a lame, 1 mile, uphill walk amongst piles of horse shit & million dollar homes. soon enough, we reached the main trail, winding through dense brush, crossing wide creeks, & passing under some impressive old oaks until it comes to a halt at the base falls, which is also somewhat of a sulphur spring (stenchy!). since it was raining, no one was there, and everything was a great deal more lush than the first time we went (ferns & flowers all over the place).
from the base falls, there's another trail which is easily overlooked. this one is a real test of will. an ultra steep, 1/2 mile strenuous climb, complete with bush tunnels, boulders, and very loose soil. but it's totally worth it. the pay-off is a 150 ft waterfall, cascading down multi-tiered shelves of algea & moss to a very cold clear pool inhabited by bright orange newts.
upon closer inspection, we found a roilling cluster of mating newts, about five of them, with a sixth trying to wedge it's way in. by the time we decided to leave, all six had formed an Escher-esque knotted up ball of newt. i forgot to bring a camera : (
when we left, the whole mountain was encased in a thick fog-ish mist which, though very beautiful, made our descent all the more treacherous (i fell in some saw grass, fuuuuuuck!). over all, a highly enjoyable outting.
it's called Winding trail & Escondido falls. if you folks would like to attempt it, watch out for poison oak, that shit's EVERYWHERE.
if you do go, please leave it as found. the place has been trashed in the past, and that sure as fuck doesn't help anyone.

General | Posted 18 years agofilled out my commission info page because $ is quite scarce lately.
i've been doing this sort of sleep pattern experiment thing. each day i push my sleep ahead some 2 or 3 hours, keeping it in a continuous state of circulation. i'm on my fourth round and it's starting to affect my art in subtle ways. nothing all too exciting, but sure as hell noticeable... at least to me.
think i should keep pushing onward? stop? reverse?
i sure hope it isn't fucking up my vision.

but when it was cold he relinquished his hold,

small pink thing in a nest
General | Posted 18 years agomonth & a half ago, a humming bird constructed a tiny nest in the ficus tree outside my window, plastering stuff to the branch with sticky, weblike secretions. then it laid something and kept it warm for a while.
soon enough, i noticed a little parted beak poking up from the rim. so new it was near translucent.
since then it has gotten larger (and covered w/ fluff!). i've seen the mother vigorously shoving nectar down the child's gullet.

deletion
General | Posted 19 years agoif you could completely remove anything from human history, anything at all up to this point in time, what would it be. think long & hard.
i would remove two things:
-smooth jaz
-romantic comedies (excluding Shakespeare, of course)

good readin'
General | Posted 19 years ago Having finished Curse of Lono, which just so happens to be a genuine work of greatness, i have initiated the reading of The Doctor is Sick by Anthony Burgess. it's a nice transition from the marlin bludgeoning insanity of H.S.T. i highly recommend both to those who haven't yet partaken.
