Closed for commissions, ongoing hiatus
General | Posted 7 years agoI mentioned this on twitter, I haven't been as active here but wanted to comment in full.
I'm shutting down commissions. I've been pushing myself hard wanting to make this more of a living, but i've been drowning and reinforcing bad habits trying to get out of it. It's not healthy for my physically and it's been bad for my work, so I need to stop.
It hasn't been fun for a long time, but it hasn't been fulfilling either. It has only been a grinding chore for a long time now which isn't getting better and it's not helping me improve. I didn't realize how bad it was until I started doing the goofy Red Eye doodles, and how quickly I improved in certain things. It's a bad sign. Particularly as so much of my life became monetary based and only there to make money, no enjoyment or free time.
I'm going to finish out my queue. anyone that I agreed to a commission I deliver.
I'll be dealing at AC coming up and I'll take comms there if you really want one, but otherwise I'm going to stop for a while and just enjoy art again and not turn it into a business.
It may not be forever, I'll definitely still be drawing and making things, but no more commissions for now.

Not dead and updates
General | Posted 7 years agoSo it's been a while since I posted anything. I'm okay, just had a lot going on.
Recently I realized I was in a really unhealthy living situation for myself, so I had about 2 weeks to pack my stuff up and move back to Montana to be close to family and friends again and try to start over.
unfortunately I also got the flu in that time despite getting vaccinated. I still have a death rattle cough, but I'm in Montana now and things are a bit less hectic. I'm a bit behind but i'll be plowing through my queue and updating.
I just wanna say, thanks to all those that have been so supportive. I'm still a bit heartbroken, and have a lot to deal with, but things are looking up.
I also want to thank all my customers for being so patient. I'm not happy about falling behind and I need to do better, but you've all been amazing and it means a lot.

More updates
General | Posted 8 years agoThis has not been a great month, the car is totalled and can't afford to replace it. I got a crazy bad sinus infection and had to go to the doctor. Broke up with my SO. The bank contacted us to gtfo of the house within 2 weeks...and now the bees are gone.
I guess the mites that the bees got were resistant to miticide. It happens, especially in our area where there's a lot of mites lately and a lot of keepers are losing hives. Between the mites and an invading hive from nearby, our queen decided "fuck that" and flew off with the hive.
I'm still working away at shit, but trying to get everything packed by wed for the move and i'm allergic to something (my bedsheets I think tbh) so i'm breaking out in hives. meeeh I'll be glad when this is all over.
I'm still selling stuff to clear out and make some money for the move.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/.....it?usp=sharing
just taking whatever offers on things. willing to sell in groups or individually.

More about Bees~!
General | Posted 8 years agoI'm just a bee person now. So here's an update on the hive, because i've excited about it.
So my eye is better (hurrah) the majority of the swelling was gone within 48 hours, but I still had a bit of puffiness and swelling until today (which is normal)
as for the bees, turns out the queen from the swarm was not in the hive, which is a bummer. Workers only live for about 40 days, and we'd been working on getting them in the hive and things set up for about 3 weeks. which means we needed a queen pretty quick.
So we ended up driving across the state to buy a queen on Sunday. The queen comes in a small cage with some of her workers and the cage has a small candy plug which the workers will eat through over the course of about a week. This gives the hive time to get used to the queen so by the time she's out her pheromones are around the place and the workers wont kill her.
Side note: there's a bit of a misconception about bees and the queen. This idea that the bees all live to serve the queen. It's sort of true, but it's not really like a feudal hierarchy where the queen rules all. Bees serve the hive first and foremost and the queen is part of that. She has bees that feed her and clean her because she's busy with her own job of laying all the eggs.
if she's not doing her job well, or something is wrong the hive will kill her and try to make a new queen. (I'll explain in a second why our hive didn't just make its own new queen)
Okay so, we inspected the hive and placed the cage inside. They seemed to fan her and inspect it without getting aggressive so that's a good sign.
We left the hive alone for a few days. Normally you want to wait a week because, like I said, if something goes wrong with a queen the hive will kill her, and if you introduce her to the hive, then mess with the hive, well the bees can figure out what's changed and try to get back to status quo (not so good for the new queen)
Turns out tho, our hive, before we placed the queen into the hive, had workers laying eggs. If a worker lays eggs they can only become male drones. Male bees literally do nothing but try to impregnate a queen (they wont impregnate workers and often just fly off to some mystery place they group up). Male bees are the frat boys of insects. They just hang out, party, and have sex.
In order to make a queen, a hive has to feed a newly hatched female only royal jelly. Since swarms do not carry eggs when they travel, and the queen was lost originally, there was no way for the hive to make a new queen.
Now a small problem when workers start laying eggs is they can become aggressive to new queens that are introduced and try to kill her. It's basically the hive is breaking down and lashing out. So we opened the hive early in case the queen was not being accepted we could trick the workers with some oil spray to keep them occupied long enough that she'd get time. (bees have such interesting problems and solutions lemme tell you)
Anyway they were actually quite amicable to the queen and since we needed her to start laying before we lost too many workers to the ravages of time, we pulled the candy plug ourselves and let her go. It's not easy to tell the emotional state of bees all the time. they wort of vibrate when really happy or really pissed. But in the words of my roommate "they weren't trying to kill or...or they're really bad at it"
queen was checking out the comb, the bees didn't murder her. Counting this as a win.
The hive is closed up for the next 2 weeks to give her a chance to lay and give the hive a chance to really get to work on honey and comb production.

the queen is the one with the yellow spot on her back, the mark is to distinguish her (they're hard to spot, only slightly larger than reggo bees) and to show the year she was born (queens live about 5 years if all goes well, though you want to get a new one after 3 years)

Adventures in beekeeping
General | Posted 8 years agoIf you've been following my twitter a bit. I've started keeping bees, it's been interesting.
(warning: journal contains pics of bee stings and swelling around eye)
we were thinking about keeping bees this spring when a swarm showed up to the house. A swarm is when a new queen is born, usually when the space for the hive is getting a bit small, the new queen will fly to find a place for a new hive and a part of the old hive will follow her.
So a swarm just showed up in our tree and we decided that "well if the universe will put it on the front door" we went about collecting the bees, which was harder than it looked lemme tell you.
This was the swarm, http://imgur.com/qkvUPfI about 20 feet up, on a hill, so it was tough to get at. Bees are pretty docile in general and particularly when they're swarming as they have no honey or babies to protect. So the trick is you collect the queen and put her in the box so the rest follow (trick is finding the queen)
i'll skip a lot of the bother, we tried shaking them down, then we fashioned a long stick, then we borrowed a neighbors ladder (they were bemused to say the least) and cut down the branch. We managed to get a lot in the hive but most moved back to the branch at the point it had been cut, so we climbed the tree and cut off a chunk and carefully brushed the bees into the box.
http://imgur.com/mbUTahQ
And that was that. we left them alone for a week. There's still a garrison of about 100 bees in the tree but we have thousands in our box, they're active and bringing in pollen.
After all that we managed to get away with just one sting (me) and a minor burn from the smoker (not me)
well that is until yesterday.
like I said bees are really docile. you can actually sit by a hive and watch them, which I found to be fun during my lunch breaks. I'd watch the bees, see them take out any dead bees (bees don't live very long, only about 2 weeks and they'd been in the tree at least a week), set up guards, etc.
In watching I found bees are actually really goofy and uncoordinated. They burst out of the hive when they take off and tend to run into incoming bees a lot. its really funny to watch.
Well while I was sitting one bee flew out and ran into my head, unfortunately it got stuck just under the brim of my hat and panicked, stinging me. Lame.
http://imgur.com/VIS6wZ1 the sting (the white dot is the stinger)
Now you've probably heard not to pull out stingers but to scrape them with a card so you don't squeeze in more venom. That's not how bee stings work. It's more important to take them out quickly, very quickly. Just an 8 second delay will increase the swelling by 30%
I learned this after when I was looking into bee venom (it's interesting)
Also, bee stings tend to swell about 24-48 hours after the sting. So ten hours later my eye started to get puffy (warning the next two pics are of the swelling around my eye.)
http://imgur.com/lcWhRQK
And then when I woke up my eye was super swollen. http://imgur.com/CnV6kVM
I am alright really. It doesn't particularly hurt, just a bit tender (sort of like sunburned skin). bee stings on the face have a tendency to swell a lot, particularly swell around the eyes. this is an average sting and it'll probably go down in about 48 hours.
Personally I find the whole thing fascinating and funny (which is why i'm sharing)

Slowdown and apologies
General | Posted 8 years agoI'm being a bit slow on my queue and I wanted to say sorry for that. I got extremely sick and unable to work at all, however the effects seem to have passed so I'm going to try to kick it into high gear and get a lot of this done.
thanks everyone for being so patient and understanding while you wait. I really appreciate it.

Questions about moral situations
General | Posted 8 years agoI'm working on an ethics paper hoping to get into a phd program (woo) the topic is about moral luck, risk, and bad shit happening.
I want to check an intuition I have so I'm gonna ask some questions. They're weird and I'm not trolling. If you could just answer honestly. I'm not judging or anything just need some non-philosopher answers.
1. Do you think someone that succeeds in murdering another person is worse (more morally wrong) than someone who attempts murder and fails?
example. Someone puts poison in a drink and their victim dies, vs someone that puts poison in a drink and the poison isn't strong enough so the victim lives.
The only difference being luck.
2. Suppose there is a drunk driver that manages to make it home without meeting another person on the road, versus a drunk driver that strikes and kills someone on the way home. All other things being equal (except that someone else in on the road in option B) would you say the difference between A and B is luck?
3. In the scenario above do you think person B is more morally wrong than person A?
Again, I'm just testing intuitions. Please answer honestly and don't worry, there is no right or wrong answer to this (unless you think drunk driving is okay, that's wrong, don't do that. it's bad...also don't poison people.)
Edit:
Don't worry about what is legally the case or why. I'm just concerned with a perfect world in ethics. I don't really care how or why people will be punished, just if what they did is wrong and how.

Small reminders
General | Posted 8 years agoJust a reminder guys, I don't work on weekends. I need time to study, run errands, etc. I might work on comms when I have time but I'd prefer to do business between mon-fri, so don't expect a lot of work over weekends.
Also, I've updated my Trello. If you ever see that your commission isn't on the trello feel free to message me. I keep offline files for comm details and sometimes make a mistake transferring some of the info to trello. Feel free to shoot a quick message and I'll be happy to fix things.

Where I am, how to chat with me
General | Posted 8 years agoSo I've been a tad busy the past couple days trying to help out some of the RMFC dealers that lost their venue.
(there's a list https://docs.google.com/document/d/.....it?usp=sharing and gofundme https://www.gofundme.com/artist-sup.....-lawyer-fanart if you're interested in helping.)
It made me think, interacting again with the community has been nice so I wanted to remind people I have a twitter fayvfox and telegram fayvfox (I prefer twitter but I'm happy to chat)
I just ask you don't ask for commissions on telegram. I take them through here, twitter, and email. Anything else is likely to get lost.

Dealers Den for RMFC displaced artists
General | Posted 8 years agoIf you don't already know, RMFC has been cancelled.
Despite whatever your feelings may be this means a lot of artists who depend on cons for their livelihood have been displaced.
This community is awesome at supporting those that need it (it kept an entire restaurant afloat for years) and in that light i've set up a google docs page with the artists information to get some traffic and business to those that need it.
Check out the page here. It is a work in progress as more artists contact me and get their information in.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/.....it?usp=sharing
Spread the word, these artists need business to get through the season.
If you know anyone that had a table or was in the art show at RMFC then feel free to have them email or DM me on twitter at fayvfox

Updates
General | Posted 8 years agoHey guys,
Sorry for being slow on commissions, I've had a lot going on this week, this month, even this year (clap clap clap clap)
Anyway I wanted to update to just explain that I'm still working away at everything. No one is forgotten, but I'm going to be less available and take a bit more time for things. I've decided to pursue my PhD, which means I need to buckle down and get together applications this year.
I'll still be working on art through the week, but my evenings and weekends are going to be for studying until I have a nice application packet together and get a good score with the GRE. Woo exciting.

Adjusting prices
General | Posted 8 years agoDoing really minor adjustments, this doesn't effect any commissions I've currently got on the queue or have sent invoices for, just wanted to give a heads up.
The changes are:
I'm no longer going to do color sketch commissions. It was being used by some to try and get everything and the kitchen sink in the cheapest possible manner. It was a fun way to experiment but I don't really want to spend time making ground rules or trying to negotiate what are meant to be small commissions.
I will probably run a couple when I'm doing a stream or have a particular free afternoon for it, but if people were counting on them to get the cheapest possible commission, that's over now.
Sketch pages have gotten a small bump in price. So they're 40$ and 80$, this is just a minor adjustment due to timing and accounting for fees within the cost.
Flat color and shaded sequences. Instead of 3 pt being the standard sequence size I've changed it to 4. So they will be 4 part sequences with basic background when applicable.
Ref sheets are now down to 50$ just because.
If you guys have any questions feel free to comment or note.
