"Reindeer Games" Comic Auction
General | Posted 11 years agoHi from out of the country. I decided to open up a little auction while I am away.
I have a comic I have been planning out which needs a character, I need to pay for some basic repairs for my laptop hence the auction.
The comic will be at least 1 page (possibly 2) and will involve light TF. The slot is open for any species, gender, sex, whatever. Visual ref not necessary but preferred. The comic ending can be general or XXX, or I will make both.
If XXX is chosen the buyer will have a choice in what the sex/gender of the comic character will be.
Completion date will be by dec 30th
The Auction will be held on this page and will end 5pm eastern time sunday 21.
I'll stream the making of the comic unless the buyer requests not to. Once the comic is started I'll be in contact with the buyer to do draft edits and such like a regular commission.

A difference between being a prude and being uninterested
General | Posted 11 years agoSo settling in from con and glancing over some notes I had for "ask a fursuiter" because I had some ideas for when I have time again. I came across some old questions about my thoughts on murrsuits, and I thought I would clear up some info since apparently there are some that think I am anti-porn or something.
Frankly, as far as furry porn goes, I'm just simply not that interested. No value judgment, it just doesn't do it for me. I find drawing it to be fun occasionally, playing with some expressions and things, but it's not something that I'm looking for for entertainment.
I don't care if others like raunchy furporn. If you're not hurting anyone then go have fun whatever. It's no skin off my nose. The thing that I particularly dislike is people shoving porn in my face (literally I have had porn badges shoved in my face before).
I consider it like this. I'm going to do my own thing in my own space. If someone wants to be literally balls to the wall then awesome, I just don't need to be dragged into it. It's not like I get mad about being asked "can I draw your character in porn?" "no thanks" "cool" that's about it. If i'm sitting down and eating dinner at a resturant, I don't particularly want to be shown all your porn commissions. That doesn't make them bad or wrong or what you're doing wrong, just a violation of my space easily amended by just not doing that thing.
Honestly that's how I feel about murrsuits as well, in general. When I was younger I was more harsh about t and judgmental, these days not so much. What people do in the comfort of a private room is none of my business, and to be quite frank I find unwashed suits to be more disgusting than a well washed suit that may have been used for sexual activities.
They're free to do their thing, and people that don't like that thing are free to not interact with them, it's that mutual space thing.
The only thing about murrsuits that really grinds my gears would be seeing them around kids. I don't particularly like that juxtoposition of something that is meant to be sexy and something that is interacting with very small children, and particularly I am sensitive to it since it can ruin what I have going on if there's a picture online of a suit with its dick out, and another where it's hugging a kid. My opinions aside that just fucks it up for everyone because then people don't trust any fursuiter around kids and those of us volunteering get screwed metaphorically.
The only other thing, and this doesn't just apply to murrsuits, but people being dicks in suit in public areas. Don't go to meets and hump a car. You might think it's funny but others don't and you ruin it for everyone. Don't just be lewd and nasty to whatever random stranger because you have a mask on, it might be funny to you but it really just sucks for everyone else.
That's it.

It doesn't really matter if you do the sexual stuff or not if people aren't being hurt, or you're not just messing up things for everyone, people are free to do what they want and interact with whom they please.

Con Story: In which I stare a man's leg for an hour
General | Posted 11 years agoRather than doing a generalized report of con I decided to do a little mini series of stories about my adventures at mwff2014.
I will say I had an incredible time with
as well as hanging out with sooo many incredible people. I really needed this con to refuel my batteries.
Now on to the main event
So, Friday evening I had the pleasure of attending a room party hosted by
, we set aside our eternal undying feud for a few hours to chill out and drink a delicious variety of booze (like a goldschlager bottle without a single bit of gold in it). Deo, Pinardilla, and I all showed up and during initial introductions we noticed there was a prosthetic leg on the bed with a badge and bedazzled sandle on it.
Of course the question came up "why is there a leg on the bed?" to which one of the gentlemen (I don't know his name to this day, he was "Friday Night #13" and I forgot his actual name) he calmly replied, with a completely straight face "I needed to change my shoes and it was easier to change legs"
Now, if I were a smart person I would think of alll the reasons this didn't make sense. For instance the gentleman was white and the leg was dark skinned for instance. However I was so burned out from pre-con that my brain was fried and I began crafting a rather elaborate back story.
Here I was thinking "hm, this gentleman went through something tramatic and decided 'screw adversity' and owned it." I thought the leg was a temporary. A leg he had received during the time that they were still making the properly fitted prosthetic (which I thought he was wearing at the time) "why would it be dark skinned?" you ask. Well I thought perhaps he had a sense of humor about it "give me the dark one doc, it'll be funny." i'm not smart.
So I believed this explanation that it was indeed his leg. He was wearing full length pants at the time so I couldn't see his legs. I thought to myself "legs are cool, ask if he'll show the other one" but then thought "no, I just met this person, best not to simply ask that, it might be rude." Later his buddy (Friday night # 9) commented about having two jobs and #13 quips "his other job is juggling chainsaws" to which I thought of a little joke about that being how he lost his leg, then I thought "no, I just met him, he might think that's rude" so I didn't say that.
So the night went one. I glanced at his leg now and then, curious about the articulation at the ankle, because this looked like a real leg (ha) and I was curious how smoothly it would move. I swear he didn't move his ankle for an hour at least.
He sat next to me across the bed, he crossed his leg over his knee and still, still he did not move that ankle. I considered asking about it, but then just let it go because I was distracted by something else at the time.
Finally someone asked why the leg had a bedazzled shoe, to which Fayroe replied with a story about how there were 2 legs in the pawnshop where it was from....
Wait...waaaait. Something isn't adding up. If this leg belonged to #13 then how did the leg come from a pawn shop. Finally I looked to #13, his leg, back to him and said "that's not really your leg?"
It was not, that initial bit had been a joke. I thought someone was missing a leg for an hour and made up this backstory of him being some great survivor of adversity, taking that shit in stride and deciding "this leg, this goddamn leg is going to be part of me and who I am" and brought it to cons.

This week I must prep for the conference that the dept is putting on, grade 50 papers, prep for MFF, and work on my own assignments, so I will probably be unavailable for communication, of if you do catch me it'll just be a hyper ventilating mess of word garbage.
Commissions will pick up after grades are turned in, still on schedule for the tarot thing. Contact me if you're worried about the status of your commission.

General | Posted 11 years agoI am upset, far more upset than I ought to be. I came across a comment today where someone was warning people about me and apparently something I had done in the past. I don't recall at all what they are talking about and it's something I particularly find upsetting because on the face of it I completely agree with the kind of behavior that I am being charged with having done.
I won't go into details as it could only possibly lead to problems for this person, and I already sent a note to hopefully put the issue to bed. I just wanted to say something because I see this sort of similar thing going on with other admins and it worries me.
I see often when a site is brought up or the admins are discussed misinformation abounds and is almost never corrected. Users get understandably upset and give reasons for their feelings, but these comments are rarely given context and in time become more and more inaccurate through the grapevine.
Things like claiming an admin to be into a questionable activity because 5+ years ago they explored art slightly related to that subject. Claiming an admin is sexist or racist due to a single misconstrued conversation years ago.
This isn't a call to say never to question authority. Never to be upset. Being upset happens, people are going to give their own reasons, but it would be nice to see these sorts of dangerous misinformation comments not be simply accepted and added to the rhetoric. Or at least when such a comment is heard people look into the details because a person that is upset cannot fully portray the issue, and that's fine, that's natural, it's just hard when that sort of thing lingers without question.
I'm probably fortunate in that this is the first time I've seen something in regards to my being an admin that genuinely upset me. Hopefully we can find a solution, or if not I can pay more attention and live my life in a way opposite of that claim.
Edit: talked it out and the problem has been worked out. Was a mistake.

Tarot Project (Iron Artist type project)

I'm going to be starting a major project, a tarot deck. Slots are available for each card and will be colored and soft shaded.
Minor Arcana will be broken into suits. Certain species preferred for each suit.
Minor Arcana 30$
Wands=Feline (large cats, jungle cats, housecats)
Swords=Canine (dogs, wolves, vulpines)
Pentacles=Mustelids (otters, weasels, ferrets)
Cups= Ungulates (Horse, Deer, Cow)
Major Arcana may use any species, 40$
Buyers may use existing characters if a visual ref is provided. Users may also have a character created for the card free of charge (a minor ref sheet for the new character will be provided for 15$ along with card if requested)
Timeline for completion of all cards will be completed by June 2015
Priority slots can be attained for additional fees.
Slots are first come first serve, slots reserved when payment is finalized. Multiple slots may be purchased at one time.

Dang laptop...
General | Posted 11 years agoIt looks like the ac port is acting up again? this is the same problem I got fixed a few months ago. I think it's the case that this laptop is just at the end of its lifespan, and at this point there's no point to further invest money into it.
Man that suck. Getting a new laptop will be exciting but I need to save up for it :(
I guess I need to think of a big project to get some money together so I can afford the new laptop.
Anything in particular you guys as commissioners would like to see, a kind of budget you're looking at? Maybe I should open up doing "card animals" or that tarot deck.

Academic Incest and Complacency
General | Posted 11 years agoThis is a journal about a very specific pet peeve of mine and how it relates to the world outside of academia.
Academic Incest is a phrase I use to refer to when someone seeks a graduate degree at the same place they got their undergrad, or attempt to get hired where they got their graduate degree. I understand that in part there are decent reasons for wanting to do this, especially if you have things like kids and family. Moving is a bitch, and after following my father through his PhD and to a tenure position at a university, trust me, I understand how hard it is to move to get this done. This is not to rag on people that had to stick with the same program. There are some reasons why it bugs me however.
First and foremost, the reason it's called incest is the education becomes insular. Different departments have different areas of focus. For instance my own department now is much more analytical than my undergrad. It's opened up my education to a lot more areas, which is exactly what should happen.
By attending the same institution at all levels you don't get that same breadth of knowledge. You learn only what a small group of educators have to offer and you go into the world with only that small education. Yes experts in the field have a grasp of all the aspects of the field, so an ethics prof can teach intro metaphysics easily, but at the graduate level it's much different to learn from the person actively studying and researching what you are studying.
The more troublesome part is simply complacency. Staying in the same place makes one complacent. Complacency is death so far as graduate studies are concerned.
Again, going to a new program is hard, it is. It's a new place, new people, new work, and you have to learn to balance it all. One might think "oh it's fine, I know this school, I know this town, I don't have to work so hard then and can focus on other things" but the thing is that difficulty often lends itself to benefit.
For our year we have a fantastic group that is extremely supportive of one another because we were new to the area, new to the school, and needed to learn and survive together. someone that is already used to matters is probably not going to try as hard, and in time may find they didn't try in the right areas.
Someone in the same area will hang with their undergrad friends still in the program and not reach out to the other grads. Someone in the same area might not realize that while they were the big fish of their class, they're coming into a group that is well above the level of expectation and understanding of undergrads and to act like the big fish in the pond is a bad idea.
I am not saying it is bad to keep your friends, just to be complacent. See there are opportunities that can pass by and be missed. At the beginning of the semester when everyone is casually getting to know one another and meet up, if you don't show because you have other friends, then you are excluding yourself from the group. In the adult world, if you keep turning down people they just stop asking, particularly grad students, we don't hang with people just to be nice.
As the semester goes on you'll find that when you need help, or when your friends are busy, there's no one left because you missed that opportunity.
This is not to say that just be friends because someone can be useful. If you don't like someone then just live your life and don't hang out, but often those that are complacent will miss opportunities without realizing, and that gets to be far more of a problem later in life (if I could do shit over again I would have done a lot more networking in the art circles)
That's the general lesson here. In life you will be invited to things, and while you may not be comfortable with everything, or you may not really want to be there, sometimes it's best to make a showing, show you are willing to put forth and effort, so that later people will still remember you and will offer opportunities that you will want. Stability is good, but complacency is bad. Don't be complacent, don't let opportunities pass.

New Allergy?
General | Posted 11 years agoSo I have a roommate from china, he cooks with these peppers. They're long and green and I have no idea what they are because roommate doesn't speak english well enough to know their name. The reason I mention this is, whenever he cooks with them it makes my throat tighten up, like I got this tickle in my throat which makes me cough. I'll be upstairs in my room (over the kitchen) or in the living room (next to the kitchen) when this happens and the weird throat feeling lasts hours.
Anyone have something like this? should I get myself checked out? I despise peppers in general so it's not that I'll be eating them a lot. Just I dunno, it's weird as hell.

Took advice from in here and did more research. I'm not allergic to capsassin (I will on occasion have a pepper but I really don't like it much) so it's probably the capsassin becomes airborne and just irritates the hell out of my throat because I really do not like spicy food at all. Thanks for the advice everyone.

What Terrifies You?
General | Posted 11 years agoIn the spirit of Halloween let's have a chat. What terrifies you? What keeps you awake in a cold sweat at night? What is something so dark, so wrong, so scary that the mere thought of it makes you want to shudder and curl up in a blanket?
Personally there is 1 thing that absolutely makes me lose my shit
Lobotomies. (warning, there is some graphic shit to come)
Seriously, there is no possible combination of words in the English language to fully express the ice cold terror that grips my heart when I even think of a lobotomy. I am willing to accept qualia as it is the only possible method to explain the sheer magnitude of my dread at the very concept much less the history involved with such a procedure. My consternation is metaphysical, a sum greater than its parts. Simply put it makes me afraid, a deep primal fear for which there is no true abatement.
For those not in the know, a lobotomy is a surgical procedure which would destroy the frontal lobe, or sever the connection between the frontal lobe and remainder of the brain. Outcomes varied between complacency and vegetative state. The frontal lobe is what makes you...you. It holds your sense of self, identity, autobiographical memory. It is all your personality and what makes you you.
Lobotomies were used as a treatment for psychosis during a time when little was known of the brain, it was controversial due to the great risks faced by the patient, but was admittedly successful as a treatment in a world where the going treatment was more "well...maybe if we leave them in a room they'll get less crazy. " Don't get me wrong, it was effective, it was able to mitigate the symptoms for things like schizophrenia with no apparent reduction in intelligence. The inventor of the procedure won a nobel prize. However the intentions of this treatment had more than a few bricks to pave the road to hell with.
Early lobotomies required surgical settings (what with performing surgery on the brain) which made them largely unavailable to the groups that would particularly need it. Those in psychiatric hospitals which may not have an operating table, anesthetic, etc available. Good intentions strike again and a simpler procedure was invented for those that may not necessarily have the tools for proper brain surgery.
A transorbital lobotomy is a procedure, which rather than drilling into the skull, a small thin blade was pushed up against the upper eyelid and slid around the eyeball to press against the bone at the back of the eye socket. A mallet was then used to break the blade through this thin bone and pierce the brain in several places, going through the connecting areas of the frontal lobes.
Before this procedure between 1940 and 1944 a little over 600 lobotomies had been performed in the US. Transorbital lobotomies made access easier and in the year of 1949, in one year, over 5000 of these procedures had been performed.
Thing is, it was used to treat all kinds of "mental illness" and at the time that was a very broad umbrella. Depression, mood swings, hysteria, rebelleous attitude, and similar issues were at the time considered to be mental defects, and were subject to be treated with lobotomies.
The fact of the matter is, this procedure was considered for a short time to be a boon, and for a time due both to misunderstanding "difficult" people who could have otherwise been what we now would consider healthy, lost themselves. Some died from the operation, some were "calmed" and remained in institutions, and some poor souls lost all ability for independence, their basic capacity for bodily control was destroyed.
This is the sort of thing to keep me up at night. The mere mention of the procedure in a game I played caused me to stop playing for a time. It is the only time I've been too scared to want to play a game again.

It's that time of the semester where I have a shit ton of work midterms to take, midterms to grade, conferences to plan, blah blah blah.

Long link, sorry. For those that didn't bother to click it's a pick that has 2 ID cards. One is a uni ID and another is a concealed carry gun license, the text is "Texas. only one of those ID cards will allow you to vote...guess which"
Implying that Texas is crazy conservative and gun ownership is more valuable than education I guess.
There's the thing, one of those is issued by a private body and one of them is issued by the state government.
School IDs don't have a criminal background check, they do not require residency of the state or the country (I'm not a resident of michigan, my ID card for Uni doesn't inform of that). It also doesn't have a system to really prevent forgery
Concealed carry requires a background check, it requires residency in the country and that state in many instances, and it often has things like fingerprinting, and definitely have anti forgery measures.
Essentially the picture amounts to "this baskin robbins birthday card is not considered as good as a drivers license for the legal purposes of identifying a resident for voting. WHAT A SHOCK"
I don't care what your opinion is on guns, if you disagree with them that's fine. If you like them fine too. But goddamn to I hate this kind of mindless drivel where "guns are bad, dumb conservatives" or "guns are good, dumb liberals" are the core of the argument meant to cause outrage.
No your school ID doesn't mean shit and any ANY state issued ID where they are required to keep tabs on the individual is going to be better, whether it's issued for a reason you like you not.

Say you are on a game show, the Monty Hall show in fact. Part of the game is you are given a selection of 3 doors. Behind one door is a brand new sports car :D, behind the other two doors there are goats.
You can select the door A, B, or C with no idea which door the car lies behind?
Say you select A. Monty (the host) will then remove one of the remaining doors, always one with a goat behind it. You are then given the option to switch doors, do you?

So the Monty Hall problem is a logical paradox. It seems like the remaining doors will be 50/50 chance for the car.
In reality if you switch doors you have a 2/3 chance of getting the car than if you stayed with your first door. Wait, you say, that makes no sense. It should be 50/50 there's 2 doors.
So, when you start there is a 1/3 chance that the car is behind any door. A 2/3 chance that it is not behind the door you choose. When a door is removed from the system it is still a 1/3 chance that the door you picked first is right, and still a 2/3 chance it is not that door, but since there is only one door left you can pick it and have a 2/3 chance of a car.
The fact of the matter is, our brains hate this sort of probability stuff, and it's always going to seem wrong. I personally wouldn't believe it until I did the problem over and over and over.

Say you are on a game show, the Monty Hall show in fact. Part of the game is you are given a selection of 3 doors. Behind one door is a brand new sports car :D, behind the other two doors there are goats.
You can select the door A, B, or C with no idea which door the car lies behind?
Say you select A. Monty (the host) will then remove one of the remaining doors, always one with a goat behind it. You are then given the option to switch doors, do you?

So the Monty Hall problem is a logical paradox. It seems like the remaining doors will be 50/50 chance for the car.
In reality if you switch doors you have a 2/3 chance of getting the car than if you stayed with your first door. Wait, you say, that makes no sense. It should be 50/50 there's 2 doors.
So, when you start there is a 1/3 chance that the car is behind any door. A 2/3 chance that it is not behind the door you choose. When a door is removed from the system it is still a 1/3 chance that the door you picked first is right, and still a 2/3 chance it is not that door, but since there is only one door left you can pick it and have a 2/3 chance of a car.
The fact of the matter is, our brains hate this sort of probability stuff, and it's always going to seem wrong. I personally wouldn't believe it until I did the problem over and over and over.

People of the fandom
General | Posted 11 years agoYou know there are some really bitching people in the fandom. It's where I met my best friend ever as well as my boyfriend. I'm glad I take part in the community, but once in a while I really wonder about the people on these sites.
Ever meet one of these people that's just so off? The sort that just get obsessed with something, and are always so damn angry. It's like they just want to waste their lives being irrationally angry at someone, and they start telling stories where you're not sure if they're trolling or genuinely believe the things that are coming out of their mouth.
Oof. I don't mean to be mean. This isn't about people who are a bit awkward, or different, or might have some sort of disability and they have difficulty interacting. It's the people that are constantly aggressive and start to make stories for why the people they hate are awful, often stories that make no sense at all.
Sometimes I genuinely wonder if these people are just making shit up for fun and find being pissed to be funny, or if they actually convince themselves of the things they've made up to justify their rage.
Not entirely sure which is worse, though I know which is more sad.
