Fate Dice and Chessex Albedo.
Posted 10 years agoTook me forever to finally receive these dice, a set of yellow fate or fudge dice to add to my RPG collection. Now if I could gather about two other interested individuals I could complete my dream of playing Albedo's The Drift, which had a 2d6 system of dice rolling that I think could easily be replaced with the Fate dice.
Honestly I'm just glad to finally have the dice in my collection since ordering them in November of last year.
On a final side, the guy running the game shop kept referring to me as 'Nancy' which I'm not sure if he was joking or fishing.

Posted 10 years agoThe real reason I play Skyrim: To watch my hubby wander about the house. Married Scouts Many Marshes this time because he actually moves into the house that you buy.
Upon arriving at Honeyside, my lizard headed down the stairs and began using the arcane enchanter.
Came back from an adventure to find Scout and Iona sitting at the table having dinner, so I sat down and joined them.
FINALLY got to climb into bed with the argonian and receive the Lover's Comfort bonus!
Scout likes to sing while I am working at the alchemy lab.

Cthulhu Mythos Dream part 2
Posted 10 years agoWe had gotten a room at this hostel, though I never saw it. The payment was the silver necklace that i typically wear around my neck, the one that says "Wisdom." Ted and I ate some kind of raw fish at one of the tables, pink and translucent--I worried about the water situation, we were served peroxide instead.
Met a couple that were willing to help us escape. Although they looked human, a man and woman, when the time came to leave, they became pillars of red and black stone, which shifted and contorted into strange, interlocking angles, becuase there was something after us--something unseen and powerful. The creatures twisted into strange pattern, creating a gate for which we escaped. We were home, exhausted and scared.
I asked my friend if he could make it home--he said no and asked me to drive. Which I did. As I drove him home I said something odd, (a quote from Yor), "Toritta and the little ones are my children." At which point I realized I was not human, but something akin to the great race of Yith, except my upper half was vaguely a red human torso with ridgid red antlers for arms, a featureless face that looked like red running clay. A top my head were five thick cords, each ending in a fruit that appeared to be a bald human head.
Ted was sitting in the passenger seat, his body was anyway. His mind was gone. We drove on through the night.

Cthulhu Mythos Dream.
Posted 10 years agoHad an awesome dream about myself and a friend named Ted investigating a vampire cult at a local high school. Which led into odd discoveries of vast chambers beneath the auditorium, with walls that opened in wavering patterns of shifting brick and exits that took us to parts of the field that didn't have buildings.
An odd statue of an ape creature stood at one end of the field. Short, non-descript, almost looked like a figure of bigfoot. We explored the catacombs under the auditorium further in search of big foot. The chambers wound on forever it seems and we were chased by very angry kittens, who arched their backs and dashed sideways at us. The cutest attacks in the world by the way.
And then we were not on earth anymore. It's hard to describe the alien vista, except to say that it was vaguely similar to Naked Lunch when William Lee is in Interzone. Sorta like the slums of Maroco, only with vibrant colours, phone poles all over the place whose tops were clusters of red mailboxes and cables. Ted and I emerged from a pool with a low fountain in it. It was filled with peroxide rather than water and I knew that we would die of thirst if we didn't leave this place.
We wandered and came to rest on some steps. Ted was looking for water and I was trying to figure out some machine that stood there. You had to press about a dozen buttons all at once to get it to work and it did, but I couldn't tell Ted that.
We ended up at a hostel of some sort, a large tent really with faded canvas and rotting poles. Within were rows and rows of tables where people sat. Ted waved to one person and he said something in another language which translated to, "Don't wave your antler at me."
I told Ted it was a rude gesture. You see, I was no longer human, I had become one of them--I had to get Ted out of there.
To Be Concluded.

Cledonomancy: What's Going to Happen to Me at Age 43?
Posted 10 years agoI don't know, that is five years away, but that age came up when my aunt and I were discussing retirement (she thought I was 43). Perhaps I'll win the lottery. Perhaps I'll be dead. Just an odd bit I wanted to record for posterity.
My Picks for the Best and Worst of the Ninth Doctor
Posted 11 years agoThe Good: Chris Eccelston makes for a very good doctor, a perfect blend of eccentric and grumpy--in short he was very close to being Hartnell and I appreciate that. There was also a focus on what happens when a companion vanishes off the face of the earth that I really liked. It was a subject that was never shown in the original Who.
The Bad: The effects, I am glad that the effects have improved and that the CG have been cut back in the later shows. But here it was rampant and distracting.
Most Recommended Serials:
Dalek: It is rare that I enjoy a Dalek episode, this one had morality lessons, and that made this a top pick.
The Empty Child: Creepy, historic, this episode felt like a classic doctor who episode, just with more gay.
Least Recommended Serials:
World War Three: Anything with the Slitheen in it is just awful. Fart jokes, comedic aliens, almost everything about this serial was horrid. Almost. I'm giving a special commendation to actress Penelope Wilton for her portrail of Harriet Jones, she brings a lot of heart to the episodes and I hope to see her in the series again.
The Long Game: A critic on the way journalism is handled, which could have been good except that all the characters in this are horrible people. A shame, with talent like Simon Peg and Tamsin Greig (Black Books) you'd hope the serial could be salvaged.
Almost Great:
Bad Wolf: I will give this one a nod for the simple sending off of Christopher Eccelston--it was emotional enough without being overwrought. You didn't know he was dying until the last three minutes of the series. More regenerations should be this way.

The Suspense Dream.
Posted 11 years agoThose odd dreams that are not horror, but are scary for no discernible reason. Tonights was about my nephew, his baby sitter and myself just hanging out on the street. Whenever this black van was spotted in the distance we all had to hide.
My spot was behind a tree that grew close to a retaining wall. The van would slowly pass by. It ended when I was hiding and the van passed by, but then some cops appeared escorting a man to the house that the tree belonged to; I ate a sandwich non-chalantly as if I were on break or something.

Possible Cledonomancy
Posted 11 years agoA couple of weeks ago I was certain that I had a conversation with the two women that I work with regarding a massive oil spill off of the coast of British Columbia--caused by a Canadian company. A spill worse than that of the BP debacle
Yet I was surprised to have heard no news of the event whatsoever. So I brought up the conversation today, asking if we had discussed this issue. Both the girls said that they hadn't heard of such a thing and one suggested that I had a clairvoyant episode. To make sure I looked up any news on a spill and have come up with nothing.
So I am posting this here for posterity, in case a massive spill happens off the coast of BC and is a Canadian mistake.

My Picks for the Best and Worst of the Third Doctor
Posted 11 years agoThe good, the bad and the ugly of the overall series: The good; the stories are tight and well paced, something that the first doctors lacked. I hate to admit it, but this IS the high water mark of the series, there are few if any really shitty episodes. There is continuity in the series at this point, actions in one serial appear again in others to bite the doctor in the ass. There is social commentary, the doctor is very conscious of pollution and renewable energy, to the point of being condescending.
The bad: Very little is bad, my only gripe is that THIS is not Doctor Who, it is actually James Bond, which is something I care little for. Spy capers just don't work for me. There is also a strange problem where several episodes feel like three of more ideas happening in a story--with little resolution.
The ugly: A few of the episodes I watched were still in black and white, which made the show look fantastic. Going to colour was inevitable, but the change made things more plastic and fake.
My Favourite Episodes
The Silurians: A great morality tale with a downer ending. The doctor loses some of his trust and a lot of his patience with Lethbridge-Stewart. Highly recommend this one.
Inferno: The same reason I liked Planet of Giants applies here, this is a classic Sci-Fi scenario (alternate earths) and it has wolfmen.
The Mind of Evil: This episode was the first of the series to feel like true Who. It suffers from the too many stories angle though, starting off as an assassination plot and dropping that to become a monster of the week.
The Three Doctors: All the doctors in one serial? Yes. William Hartnel's final appearance on television before his death. I'm so glad that we got to see him one last time.
Carnival of Monsters: The Doctor and Jo are in a fish bowl and are chased by worm monsters that were so well done, they appeared in at least two other episodes. The costumes of the aliens however are abyssmal.
Death to the Daleks: Have I mentioned that I don't like Dalek episodes? Love the creatures hate the plots. This was a great episode, see it just to listen to the most inappropriate music ever used for the big bad.
Planet of Spiders: Occult rituals, meditation and spiders that use mind control...yeah this is my cup of tea.
The Worst Episodes
Ambassadors of Death: So slow paced and boring that I had to look up what the plot was for this review. A shame, the premise is actually really good.
Terror of the Autons: An absolute mess of an episode, the doctor performing random magic tricks, scientists being miniaturized (and the plot being dropped), a very poor start for the Master.
The Curse of Peladon & The Monster of Peladon: These two are virtually the same plot, with infuriating characters. If I had been one of the ambassadors I'd have ordered an orbital nuke strike. Fuck these episodes.
Notable Episodes
The Daemons: Needed more wickerman and less Summer Isle.
The Time Monster: Enjoyable, almost put it in my favourites because of a scene where the doctor is talking to another character while the monster flails about in the air (you can tell the actor is trying to maintain balance). Its right out of a Zucker and Zucker film.

My Picks for the Best and Worst of the Second Doctor
Posted 11 years agoThe good, the bad and the ugly of the overall series:
The good
Patrick Troughton's doctor was much more hands on, doing investigations, gathering information and evidence, which made him a kind of space Sherlock Holmes. There was tension and suspense in these episodes, a great use of subtle music to set the mood of the series.
The bad
The noise, Jesus Christ, the obnoxious sound effects that would reach ear-splitting levels and continue on forever. Also, the serials ran long with padding after padding to stretch things out. Also there was the fact that every episode was about mind control, I think two serials actually lacked mind control, but that is out of twenty serials.
The ugly
There are only six complete serials. Watching reconstructions just isn't the same and I feel robbed because of that.
My favourite episodes:
Power of the Daleks; the first time I thought the Daleks were actually a menace and an all around good episode.
The Moonbase; the Cybermen quickly became a favourite enemy of mine. Like the Daleks there was a nice moody build up to their reveal. Also, some pretty creepy imagery here involving nerve endings.
Tomb of the Cybermen; Fun and didn't overstay it's welcome, perhaps the best paced episode.
The Web of Fear; this was the fix to The Abominal Snowmen. A weird story about fungi, yeti and disembodied intelligences. I can see why they connected Who to Cthulhu Mythos in some circles.
The Wheel in Space; I think this is the first time that the villain wasn't introduced in the first episode of the serial, which I appreciated. A little over long but the build up made the episode
The War Games; I hate to admit it (as a fan of William Hartnell) but this IS the best episode of doctor Who I've ever seen. If you have to see one episode of the black and white this is it and it has to do with the doctor meeting his match.
The Worst Episodes
Underwater Menace; just incredibly stupid and nonsensical. Doctor Who meets Doctor Evil in Atlantis. Terrible effects, terrible costumes.
The Abominable Snowmen; everything wrong with this series is on display here: Noise, boring plot, plodding pacing and no good explanations as to what was going on. An episode so bad they remade it three serials later.
The Mind Robber; is just like the Celestial Toy Maker in tone. The writers took a fuck-ton of LSD and wrote this piece of shit episode.
The Space Pirates; Diamanda Hagan was spot-on as Doctor Who spoofs Star Trek complete with the music score. Watch it only for the tinfoil hairdo the lead actress is wearing.
Almost Great
The Faceless Ones; genuinely creepy attack of the body snatchers episode. Goes off the rails with a shrink ray plot device.

My Picks for the Best and Worst of the First Doctor
Posted 12 years agoThe good, the bad and the ugly. What made the first doctor good? The fact that he did actual time travel, visiting other periods of time and getting into mischief; which is something later Who did not deal with. The doctor himself was pretty great in that he acted superior to the humans around him because he knew that he was. He was a curmudgeon, but over the series you saw that he learned the value of companionship.
The bad? The doctor didn't really do much, but stand around and observe. He always had the answer and it was usually pulled off at the last minute.
The ugly? Writing Sarah Kingdom out of the show after one serial. This was a companion who would hands down be a fan favourite if she had survived past the serial that she was in.
The Best:
The Aztecs--An interesting episode with great costumes and set pieces.
The Sensorites--A creepy introduction made me love this episode, afterwards it's rather blah.
The Rescue--An interesting mystery episode; introduces Vicky who was one of my fave companions during this series.
The Romans--Another fun historic episode, great costumes, great concept and Nero burning down Rome.
The Crusade--I love the history episodes.
The Chase--Not a great episode, but a nice send off for the original companions.
Galaxy 4--Can be really annoying because of the sounds. Interesting aliens and robots and a "Don't judge a book" moral.
The Arc--An exploration of the effects of the doctor's meddling. The monoids are a neat race as well.
The Worst:
Edge of Destruction--Two episodes of utter nonsense.
The Web Planet--Noisy, blurry and a confused mess.
The Celestial Toymaker--The first serial where you could tell William Hartnell was not well; spent most of the serial as a disembodied hand.
Almost Great:
The Gunslingers--Needed less singing.
