Moving, new job, new stage in life
Posted 10 years agoSo in a couple of days - Saturday morning!!! - I make the move to Rock Hill, South Carolina. Moving in with my mate, which is a new experience. I've had house mates and flat mates, and one rather distant roomie in the dorms, but never truly lived with anyone so this is a huge step forward and change. I am looking forward to that.
Also starting a new job on Monday, worked for Kroger for over a year (14 months), SO happy to be leaving that hellhole and starting somewhere else. I'll miss some of my coworkers, but not the store and not the company and least of the job!
This also marks the farthest I have lived for any length of time from my family - who pretty much all live within an hour/hour-and-a-half of each other as well as myself. Tight knit family is hard to leave behind, I admit. But it is time to step out and make my own way, as my landlord put it. (Good guy. Smart.)
So...here's to new life. And to nerves!

New stuff happening!
Posted 12 years agoSo, what has been going on?
I got some new artwork. Which was awesome, since it was only the second piece I have had done of my fursona. And it turned out extra cute.
I also made a rather pleasant trip up to visit some friends in S.C. Juno and Huskers were absolutely wonderful hosts, and I can't believe how sweet they both were and how much they made me feel welcome the whole visit!
Had a few days of work. So I suppose the power cord for my laptop -I have been needing to replace it, now it is totally and utterly shot-, groceries for a month or two, and gas when I need it for a while are all covered now. Which is a great feeling.
But otherwise, I am gonna really start trying to push myself to get back into some art. I know just keep saying it, but I do mean it this time. I have some folks to encourage me to do so and I think that will make a big difference, honestly. Maybe at some point, I can even get to the point of doing commissions, who knows?

Thankfulness
Posted 13 years agoSince today (as of...20 minutes ago) is Thanksgiving Day here in the US, I figure, why not?
What am I thankful for?
-My family. Even when they can be obnoxious and anxiety provoking, I still am thankful for them each and every day.
-My friends, both old and new. And I have made some new friends recently, whom have become very dear to me and important to me, as well as bringing me into the fold to meet several other furs - I think that that certain panda and wolf know I mean them [
podamy
yukonwolf]. I love y'all dearly and thank you greatly.
-The fact I am alive to be thankful at all. Seems trite and silly, but for me it is sincere and honest. I am actually amazed I am still alive sometimes, and even in relative health. So...thank God for that.
-The fandom, because, frankly, without it life would be pretty boring and I would have far fewer friends and interesting times.
Honestly...I could say I am thankful for the material junk (sure, I like it, don't get me wrong) but that is nothing more than that: junk. It comes and goes, but family, friends, and life? Those actually mean something to me.
Having recently lost a few relatives and acquaintances, and having had friends lose loved ones as well, it has made the fact life is fleeting even more poignant to me; on top of both friends and relatives having serious health scares recently. So I may be, admittedly, a bit overly-sensitive to the whole sentimental appeal of the holiday. I wish i could see and love on each and every one of my friends and loved ones today =as well and each and every person out there in general-, but since I cannot, I will just do this instead:
Happy Thanksgiving!
I am thankful for you, and hope the best for you!

Proud of my country, ecstatic for my friends
Posted 13 years agoThree states in the US just yesterday voted that gay marriage IS marriage! This is a big deal, for many reasons.
-Never before has gay marriage approval passed by popular vote -all other places that allow for gay marriage had it pushed through by law makers instead- and that is a HUGE sign for the rest of the nation and the world.
-It also signals a change in the stance of a large number of people.
Honestly, I am just really happy about it. It may not really effect me right now, since I don't live in either sate, but it does give me hope that one day I may well be able to marry whom I fall in love with right here in my home state.
And that all my friends in relationships now are just that much closer to being able to get married and have it truly mean something in this nation.
I am also proud of all those that got out and voted yesterday - or earlier, as many people did. I know some people had to stand in line for 4, even 5 hours to vote. I am so amazed at such dedication to the process and to the ideals of our country - that we are able to go out, vote for who we want to represent us, and have that actually mean something.
Just soap-box standing a little again. Something I like to do now and then.

Cooking and what foods I like
Posted 13 years agoThough I generally like to eat healthy food, I have realized that my cooking is just about anything but - given the butter content of my preferred foods. At least it tastes good.
And I don't do greasy food, so that's a plus. Mostly because any considerable amount of greasy food or such makes me sick to the stomach.
But honestly...
Frankly, I use butter enough to make Paula Deen blush. Anyone that doesn't like garlic just best stay away from the kitchen altogether. If hot and spicy is not in your palate, then you would just die from my food most often. If you don't eat eggs, you're essentially screwed; and if you require meat (especially red meat) very frequently, then you might starve with my food.
Some of the things I love the most are garlic and various herbs - sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano, to name a few. The combination (of some number) of these flavors kind of form a basis for about everything I cook - a little butter or olive oil, garlic, herbs, pepper: I am happy as a pig in slop.
I also love vinegar, in all its glorious forms. With special affection for balsamic and cider vinegars. Not sure why I like vinegar so much, I just do.
I die for hot foods. I guess that is partly because of the way I was raised - we grew hot peppers when I was little, my grandparents grew them, my great-grandparents grew them. It is bred into me, to be simple. Now, I grow tabascos and habaneros, and am currently nursing a very young bhut jolokia plant (hasn't even put on flowers yet!) and just waiting until i can pluck one off the bush and pop it into my mouth...and die from the fire. But I will be so happy.
I love pork - ham, bacon, tenderloins, chops. I don't know why, but pork is like...the only meat I could very well not just forget about and leave off my list of possible meals. As well, I eat fish fairly frequently - often such fish as herring and sardines, both of which are good for you and tend to contain less mercury than tuna or the like. Salmon is wonderful and healthy, though I rarely cook it.
The major thing I could leave behind happily - most red meat. Sure, an occasional steak (if cooked just right - seared on the outside, just barely warmed and dark red on the inside, seasoned with just a bit of cracked black pepper and salt) is great. I honestly just don't care much for red meat. But I admit...a nice piece of lamb is amazing.
I also don't tend to eat other meat all that much either, anymore. I eat chicken somewhat, mostly for the sake of health -protein is rather essential. Though I can honestly say I seem to be the only person who doesn't like white meat chicken. If I am going to eat meat, I prefer it to be something I know wasn't farm raised - something that actually just lived its life and wasn't processed and mistreated and crowded into cages, etc. Which means I do love to get my hands on wild hunted venison or elk, etc.
[I also do not mind farm-raised so much if I know the farm - for instance a close family friend raises cattle. But I know he treats them well, doesn't them suffer, doesn't overcrowd them, etc.]
Okay...I am just rambling. I just felt like kind of talking about food, for some reason.

On my soapbox, not that that is unusual.
Posted 13 years agoSince I see so many, and talk to so many, people on both sides of the "Gay Marriage" debate. ("Gay Marriage" being a bit of a misnomer in the first place, but that is an argument for another time.) I felt like I should just go ahead and say my piece and let it fall where it may from there.
This is a nation founded on the principles of Freedoms and Rights. A secular nation that specifically endeavored to limit the influences of religion on law and the law on religion, while maintaining equality of rights to all people within the nation by this. The ability of states to decide the legal outcomes of certain rights and circumstances is the very basis for this freedom through a federalist system - that the federal government supports and grants those rights and decisions made by the states: where the Constitution leaves them to be decided. The rights of marriage definition should be left to the states, as it was until 1996.
The Defense of Marriage Act attacks both the ability of the states to decide the law (not defined by the Constitution and therefore a given issue to the states) and the Full Faith and Credit Clause enforcing the neutral acceptance of each state's decisions within the Union, as well as a religious imposition on the law of the nation - as no reasonable argument exists outside religious objection to deny a legal contract between two consenting adults.
I, therefore, agree with the most recent ruling by the panel of the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston, Mass., to wit [from the ruling summary from Judge Boudin]:
"One virtue of federalism is that it permits this diversity of governance based on local choice, but this applies as well to the states that have chosen to legalize same-sex marriage. Under current Supreme Court authority, Congress' denial of federal benefits to same-sex couples lawfully married in Massachusetts has not been adequately supported by any permissible federal interest."
The act should be overturned and the rights of states to decide the issue should be returned, as they were until the act was passed under Clinton in 1996.
And though I doubt anyone is following it, this is cross-posted with my blog: http://afoxinthought.wordpress.com/

Really sad right now...
Posted 13 years agoMy baby, the cat I have had for over 7 years now, that I nursed to health and cared for when she almost lost her leg, who has cheered me up through thick and thin ever since, who would nip at my fingers when I pet her, has died in the last couple days. My split-eared little Mama Cat, my Brown Eyes.
We were told a cat was run over, but didn't know which one. then my cat didn't show up. And didn't show up. And finally this morning, when she didn't come for breakfast, I broke down. I have been crying on and off for the last couple hours now., because I know for sure now that it was her. I knew it before, but I just wouldn't give up hope she was was just wandering around a bit. But...yeah. I know.
I just hope that where-ever she is now is better, that she is better off, that she no longer has any pain (from her leg years ago, since i know it still hurt her some and there was never anything I could do to make it better).

Test week hell
Posted 13 years agoWhy is it that classes always line up that each time tests/exams roll around, they are all within a couple days of each other. This week I ended up with an O-CHEM II and a Biochem exam both on Wednesday, and Medical Entomology lab exam on Thursday. Then I shall come home Thursday to crash, and drink a nice beer that night. A Scottish import, Brew Dog's Paradox Glen Grant, aged in a 1970 Glen Grant Speyside cask. Should be quite an experience, I hope.
So last night/late afternoon, my roomie and I went out for a bit, then came back home and had some fun. We jammed (while drunk and rather stoned, I have to admit) for a few hours. It was amazing, the sounds and noises that just a guitar run through a couple amps can create. We ran from metal to noise to blues to punk, a bit of whatever came to our rather well fueled minds. Was a great way to let off some steam and ease my over-wound nerves and anxiety issues of late.
[As fun as it was, though, I don't plan to do so again anytime soon - it makes me too tired, and I wind up sleeping way later than is conducive to good study habits.]
After the test week from hell is over, I plan to really work some more on art and writing again. In the past two weeks I have been a bit more creative and productive than at anytime in quite a long while, which has been both wonderfully and surprisingly frustrating. I simply can't seem to keep up with both school work and my creative endeavors without leaving something behind.
To add to this stressful week coming up and all the anxiety that entails, I am on antibiotics that are messing with my stomach something awful. Essentially, I have had a minor but lasting tummy ache for the past week...
And to top all that off, my doctor informed me at our last appointment that my kidneys are, indeed, not functioning quite right. While they are clearly not filtering at nearly 100%, she said they were not something we need to worry about at this time - only that I should keep drinking as much water as possible to help them filter everything out like they should.
I am currently broke as well. Not really wanting to ask my dad for money for rent next month, but it appears that I will have no choice but to do so. I have put in several applications (both on and off campus) over the past two months - essentially to every job within walking distance or on campus (until my car is fixed, that is all I can apply to).
Also, as one last addition to this already obnoxiously un-gathered train wreck of a thought process, I am trying to give up smoking, for the time being at least. Possibly permanently. As much as I was enjoying hand rolling my cigarettes and as much as they seemed to help me relax and not freak out over things, my health simply won't handle it. And I think, since I am on antibiotics for a respiratory/sinus infection as it is, I should try to do anything I can to let my health catch up with the rest of me.
Sorry this turned out to be so random. I guess, honestly, it was just a rant on my current situation more than a journal entry.

NaNoWriMo, art, and other matters to do with what I am doing
Posted 14 years agoSo, we are nearly halfway through November. Which means the National Novel Writing Month is also halfway over, as is "no shave November' (though I am not participating). It is also getting very near to Thanksgiving. And, indirectly, and on a very personal note, that also means my dad will be home soon.
He has been working with a mission group in Japan, building benches for the disaster stricken areas to have an area to sit and talk and gossip and the like. He is situated -for the past nearly two months- at Tono in the Iwate prefecture, north and east of Sendai and Fukushima. As it is, he is set to return to Atlanta -via Delta, with a layover in Chicago- on the day before Thanksgiving; yes, that means he will be flying into the two busiest airports in the world both on the busiest travel day of the year...
With NaNoWriMo so far gone already, and my not having started anything -though I have an idea to work on-, I am rather far behind. I don't expect to write a full novel, but at most a novella. I also do not expect to finish it by the end of the month. But I suppose if it gets me writing a bit more, it can't be bad to at least try to push something out for someone, somewhere, who is stupid enough to offer to read my rambling, horrible writing.
I also am now proudly sporting a mohawk! Which was a shock to the system, since I waited until the weather began to cool to shave most of my head. Honestly, it is about time to re-shave the sides again. [Just as soon as I can get my housemate to do so for me...]
I wore my mohawk, a 60 soviet military jacket (which I bought some time ago in a flee market, it is the real thing), and overall punked out -more so than normal- for a Hallowe'en party with some friends I hadn't seen in some time; and met some new people in the process. Was a ton of fun, and I really enjoyed myself.
I am also trying to get a little more consistent with putting some ink on paper. Or pencil. Or anytihng else for that matter. In other words, I am attempting to get myself back into art again, because I have fell down a lot with it in recent months.
My current (re)addiction to old-school animation has seen me with a new lease on my artistic endeavors. I have been pouring myself through old Disney and WB work - Chip N' Dale, Donald, Goofy Gophers, looney Tunes, all of it. I even found a massive collection of most all of Disney's shorts up through the years - I can not wait to really dive into it!
I am also [last "also", really..] currently trying to pull a music group together; a mix of folk and soft alt rock/punk influences. The other half of this for-now-duo is a good friend of mine - the fiance of extremely close friend. Good guy, and good ear for music. Here's to hoping he can jump into it and start pulling off some sweet music with me.
So...I guess that catches me up with things a bit. Maybe. Good enough, I say. Indeed.

Moving, dead batteries, roomies, and other wonderful things
Posted 14 years agoGoodness goodness...it's been a while.
So, I am moved into a new house. Paying rent, groceries,, class fees, all that jazz. I have no car to drive, so I am forced to take the bus ANYWHERE I want to go (which is ok, I get a free pass through the university). The room I have is small, but it serves me very well (never was one for huge rooms, to be honest). Twin bed, dresser, bed side table, desk; would seem rather minimalist if the room were much larger. It is quite utilitarian as it is, which I like somewhat.
My housemates are cool. My cousin (owner of the house) and two of his friends. Two friends both named Cody. One tall, one shorter/close to my height; Big Cody and Little Cody. All of them are musicians/players, which is very nice - we have a jam/music room. I need to bring my instruments up though, they are still at my parents' place [all my guitars, amps, clarinet].
I need batteries for my camera -it is dead- but when I get some I will take lots of pictures. Probably post a few, but link to the other large number I take and post elsewhere: does anyone even use Photobucket anymore?
There is a nice cemetery nearby/right off campus. Really pretty stuff in there, but I haven't been able to take time to go through it, let alone with a camera. The scenery in my yard is fair, but nothing to brag about. the scenery around campus on the other hand - that is some beautiful stuff right there. I am very much so looking forward to taking some pictures of it. I may even have to pull out one of my 35mm cameras.
Guess that is the rambling on I need to do at the moment. Maybe more later?
So, I am moved into a new house. Paying rent, groceries,, class fees, all that jazz. I have no car to drive, so I am forced to take the bus ANYWHERE I want to go (which is ok, I get a free pass through the university). The room I have is small, but it serves me very well (never was one for huge rooms, to be honest). Twin bed, dresser, bed side table, desk; would seem rather minimalist if the room were much larger. It is quite utilitarian as it is, which I like somewhat.

Pictures, questions, and a how do you do
Posted 14 years agoSo, I was going through my old hard drive - was originally the internal HD for desktop, but is now relegated to duty as external for my laptop - and, low and behold!, I found a cache of old pictures. These pictures are from the first -and, as of yet, only- furcon I went to, FWA '09. I recognize a few suiters in them, but mostly I have no clue who they are. There are even a couple videos of of the Fursuit Games volley ball games they had while I was there that day.
So, first question: should I spend some time and upload the better of the pictures over the next couple weeks? Or just leave them trapped on my old HD?
And, for the couple people who may keep some semblance of interest in my sporadic journal postings or talk to me outside FA, I am out of the hospital. I have been since December 29th, actually...just haven't posted to say so. After two weeks in the hospital, they released me - more confused and baffled as to why my lung function dropped than before I went. During the second week, I found out that the only [unexpected, as I always grow staff] infection I had was a bacterium known as Bordetella bronchiseptica. Yes, those who keep up with veterinary medicine, that is Kennel Cough.
I caught a non-human pathogen that typically only affects canines - tell me I wasn't meant to be a furry! hahaha
But the infection was not even serious enough to account for the lung function decrease. And my function is yet to rise back to the level it was stable for the past several years - and my doc doesn't expect it ever will be. [sarcasm] So, that's great news for me...[/sarcasm]
So, how are all of y'all? Good, I trust?

*poke* There, be back later for more...
Posted 15 years agoOMG! A journal? Yeah, so I don't do these much. So sue me.
But anyhow...
I am in the hospital. Nothing major, yet. At least as far as I am aware. Just a "tune up", they call it. Which I haven't had to do for about 15 years now.
For, if your PFTs (Pulmonary Function Tests) are low scoring, they admit you. Pump you full of meds. Do frequent respiratory therapy. And take lots of your blood.
This is what the next two weeks or so -as of last Thursday afternoon- shall amount to for me. So...fun fun fun.
/sarcasm
But hey! Gives me a chance to catch up on some reading and such.
And, if I am lucky, I won't be back for a "tune up" for another 15 years.
So, otherwise.
Merry Christmas to y'all. Oh by golly, have a holly jolly Christmas this year.~

Posted 15 years agoThe 4th!
Posted 15 years agoTo the vast multitude of two (maybe less) people who care to read my journal, Happy Independence Day! The day we, the people of the United States decided that enough was enough. That we could do better on our own. And, regardless of if you like what we are doing now, we are still strong. Still holding our own. And I am very thankful for that.
Funny, we celebrate this most American of days by drinking masses of booze (much of which is imported), blasting loud, obnoxious music, and blowing up rockets made in China. Essentially, simply living up to the reputation that precedes us for one day a year. And, my God, do I love it so!
So, hope you had a blast!
Literally. Blown up a small piece of the country we all adore so much?
With honor, of course.

Easter is upon us
Posted 15 years agoWell, it is that day. Easter. I hope your happy and have a great time with family, friends and loved ones. Whether you celebrate Christ's resurrection or just savor the joyful sight of Easter Bunnies and colorful eggs. Or, if your like me, both.
And, of course, I hope everyone enjoys a mound of chocolates and peeps.
Happy Easter!! <3

For Kudos, ol buddy bear, to read
Posted 15 years agoSince my link did not work for him, anyone who is watching me gets to read my random late night ravings. Which are not, in the least, furry related. At all. Just me being random and introspective. Which are two things I seem to do well. And then get me writing them down...and they will likely make no sense at all. Enjoy.
"Rebellion" vs just saying "screw it"
Round 1! Go!!
That is essentially where I am. I keep getting conflicting ideas on it too...
Just for you who reads this (cyber-space mites and virtual dust bunnies are probably about it...hey guys!), in case you were wondering: I always said, "I hate having short hair!" I always lied.
Which was just rebellion. The one iota of rebellion I had available to me.
My friends had drugs. Now, I never saw that to be right for me. Which is probably a good thing, because I am waiting for some of those old "friends to end up in the obituaries...or the federal pin. Either way. I saw too much of it. Friends so fucked they couldn't stand up. So strung they didn't remember me being there. I didn't want that. Granted, it did seem fun...
I had hair. A massive 'Jew-afro'. Which then later got dyed red. And let grow to two-tone - red and natural brown. It was the sign of my mentality, for better or worse. It was recognized even before I was most times! "Oh hey, it's the fro! Mitch? Yeah, what's goin' on, dude?" And the obligatory "dude" was not just because I happen to use the phrase a lot, methinks...
I otherwise kept neat and clean. Nothing out of the ordinary. Clean shave, for the most part. Nice dress - band tees, blue jeans, and a heck of a lot of over shirts (I have a thing for them). Oh, well...I guess having a coat/jacket for every situation was a bit odd. Just...er, eccentric though. Not rebellious. I have a definite thing for coats/jackets.
I had hair. And I say "had". I make that a point. "Had." Not "have". Had it, but don't now.
Why? because I cut it off.
- I got tired of always having to deal with it. Anyone have any clue how much trouble that -thing- on my head was?
- I got tired of "it" being "me".
- I got tired of it being an "it" at all.
Now it is growing back. Think I shall cut it back again.
It is like a hearty shrub - it comes right back. It is like a plague - you can't be rid. It always comes back. It is like a living thing all it's own - it adapts and grows.
Now, I no longer need "the hair" for rebellion. As early as it may be for calming down, I see no need for superficial things to rebel. I do see a need for great change in all that lies beneath the surface. That is true rebellion - rebellion against what is set as the Status Quo. Right?
Hair only sets yourself up for a typical oversight. No one sees you, they see "it." It overcomes your effort, your strengths, your all. It wins the battle, but always loses the war.
I shall rebel with my attitude - my pacifism, my acceptance, my tolerance, my love, my faith, my all. Not with hair and looks.
Besides...now I have the beard...it will win eternal fire in the hearts of lesser beings. It is greatness.
So, dust bunnies of the interwebz and mites whom inhabit the tubes of deliverance, do you think the knock on my noggin, which occurred earlier this fine evening, was a bit of a looper?

Momocon
Posted 15 years agoSince I completely broke, I was unable to attend FWA. But! I was in luck, a friend needed a ride to Momocon and had a ticket in return! So, to Georgia Tech and Momocon I went.
It was quite a fun time actually.
The [Human] Death Note was sure to kill a few : Mr. T (twice, at least), Chuck Norris (can that even happen?), HIV. The usual suspects.
Kiba with Akamaru was a nice touch. Akamaru was a quad suit in this case. And would give Kiba a ride for pictures!
A miniature Inuyasha was soo cute. Little kid stole everyones' hearts. And he usually seen with one of the best Sesshoumaru cosplayers I have seen. So that made it all the better.
And the usual flocks of narutards, Kingdom Hearts cosplayers, and (typically bad) L outfits.
All in all, it was a great time!
Ended up with a tail from the dealers room.
Went to McDonald's with a guy in a spiked collar and wolf tail and my friend decked out completely as Sora. One of the people working had to ask what the deal was witht he getups.
So, Momocon = great fun when you are broke.

Posted 15 years agoSurprised I ain't used this here little feature-kinda-thingy any yet.
So, what to say, what to say? Oh, why not...
I have a Formspring now. Yeah, I know, why stoop to such a low in internet crappery and boredom induced, meme-ish, geeky, pointless, obnoxious situations as Formspring?
"Why? Oh why would you do it?" They ask.
Because I am a bored, geeky individual who likes pointless internet crappery such as this, that's why.
So, ask away. http://www.formspring.me/RMitchG
But - be warned! - do not expect any serious answers. Because you will be sad, my friend, very sad. Nor do I suggest you even look at it if you can't take a joke [as they are, in general, in rather bad taste].
Also, to not leave with such a lame journal my first time around...a banned advertisement.
