Bought a house
Posted 2 years agoRent was getting too expensive so I waited for something in my price range to pop up on the house market. Now I just have to find someone to fill the apartment and pay rent on the lease I have which goes till next june. Because landlords are stupid and only care about money.
The house has 4 bedrooms, two with carpet and two hardwood floored. The house was previously being rented by the younger family members of the owners. They had a cat that they allowed to piss everywhere and scratch the hell out of some of the door frames. Luckily the hardwood floors are not too stained and the cat piss didn't soak through to the sub-floor.So not only do I have the task of repainting everything but also combating the leftover smell. I started with white vinegar which helped, and peroxide for some of the stains. They also started renovating a fifth bedroom into an upstairs bathroom and I don't know what to do with it. coils on the stove are shot and need to be replaced asap.
fresh paint makes a big difference in the interior appearance! I'm going with eggshell white for the walls and ceilings and forest green for all the trim, door frames and window frames. little by little I will be able to turn this place around for when I eventually sell, several years from now.
I'll have to take some voluntary overtime hours at work to cover the expense if I can't find someone to sublease the apartment.

New sona
Posted 3 years agomy character Fenumendil has for many years been an elf, first on furcadia, then IRC and then Tapestries. On tapestries I started him out as a twinkish femboy, using Deedlit from the anime, Record of Lodos War as a template. More recently I brought him back onto Tapestries as a more mature, rough character, still an elf, but more like something from the American cartoon, Pirates of Dark Water, or the comic book series Elfquest, or like a wood elf wardancer from Warhammer.
A few months ago I learned of Wolfery.com and brought my main character, Stairway, over there and its proved to be a lot of fun. So I decided to bring Fenumendil over there as well. I had an idea for a sort of shapeshifting for the elf to be able to change into a dolphin, and then remembered the flying dolphins from ECCO 2, The Tides Of Time, and made some effort to find a suitable picture and write out a description. Things one needs to make a character presentable. What started out as an experimental concept has become Fenumendil's main form on Wolfery. And its more fun than I could have anticipated. Not only is the character becoming more developed over time, but the character traits seem to have a beneficial affect on me IRL.
Please ask me anything about this sona to help me refine it. To summarize, I'll just cut/paste from the description on wolfery:
Long and sleek this telepathic dolphin from the distant future actually floats through the air as if swimming some distance above the ground. The body is close to 4 meters in length, with meter-long fins to aid in flight. Shi has no sense of smell but hir sonar lets hir "see" almost like x-ray.
About: As seen in the video game: ECCO, the tides of time. A skyfin has telepathic abilities and can levitate themselves at will and can even "give rides" to others. The species evolved from dolphins and comes from the distant future after humans either went extinct or migrated to other planets.

I hate moving
Posted 3 years agoLandlords got greedy so I decided it was time to get a house. I have previously owned a house, but it was over a hundred years old and had problems associated with its age.
Shortly before making an offer, or deciding to move out, I signed a year lease with the management, but the lease doesn't begin till june. My closing date for the house is May 5th and I tried to return the lease or ask them to cancel, because its not active, in my opinion it seems sensible to simply part company and be done with. But no, the landlords want to hold me responsible for the lease and rent even though I'm moving ut before it begins.
The apartment is in Portage, Wisconsin. If anyone is interested in moving in and taking over the lease, that's my only option for getting out of this mess.

Superman story idea
Posted 4 years agoStatistically speaking, it would have been more likely for the baby escape-pod to crash land in the ocean than on land. In which case Superman could have been raised by dolphins instead of humans.I want to try writing a story along this line, but I'm not sure how far I'll get. But i do think its a really neat concept.
my car died, and i'm glad.
Posted 5 years agoi could have been killed yesterday afternoon, had i been on the freeway instead of at a red light.
what happened is this. last year i bought a chevy aveo, as-is, because my kia sportage was literally falling apart. i didn't think anything of it at the time but it came with on-star installed. i never subscribed to the service so i figured as long as i or anyone else pokes the button it won't be activated.
so yesterday afternoon i was at a red light, just minding my own business with some soft music playing on CD. suddenly and without prompting, the music stops and there's a little phone symbol on my radio (its xm, but i already told that company to go to hell.) then an automated voice starts asking my questions like its trying to trick me into subscribing to service.
Naturally i had a panic attack and thought that all this time someone could have been spying on me and i didn't know how to turn my music back on. i almost missed the green light. if i had been on the freeway when all this happened i could have been killed in an accident.
When i got home i hastilly looked up where the box was, because i had no intention of allowing this abuse of my privacy to continue. i found the box and cut all the wires. now my car just wont start at all and in a way i'm gald, i don't think i can feel safe in a car that might try again to kill me. all i wanted when i got this car is the basics. it turns on, it goes, it stops, and it has heat. no tracking devices, no roadside service, no remote start. i don't think thats too much to ask.

No one gets out
Posted 5 years agoIt should be stated that the first time i played Starlink i was surprised that contrary to popular scifi media, none of the characters ever set foot on alien planets. And with good reason, as the risks of cross contamination are so severe that any realistic quarantine would be nearly and virtually impossible. Every planet capable of generating life would needs be entirely isolated from all others to prevent catastrophic upset of its entire ecosystem.
I hope this becomes a popular trend, as its the most sensible practice i've seen in regards to preservation, conservation, and overall safety. Even the prospectors and researchers never go anywhere without a fully contained, and presumably, hermetically sealed vehicle. In fact the only exception to this policy is the game's villains (maybe). Though interplanetary warfare in light of the practice of zero-exposure raises the question of ethically justifying damaging or destroying enemy vehicles (and thus exposing the planet to contaminating agents).
Traditionally and with very few exceptions we see such masterpieces as Alien: Covenant, Earth2, Starwars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, etc etc where everyone is not subject to any sort of biological protocol unless the plot demands it. Either exposure is the rule, or it must be regarded as a capitol offence tantamount to Terracide. (i may have just invented a word, feel free to spread it around (pun intended)). All it would conceivably take is one instance of carelessness to doom an entire planetary biome to mass extinction.
The risk is double edged, of course. Even the slightest exposure to an alien environment, unless absolutely sterilized (virtually impossible) would be a death sentence for the pilot of such vehicles. if not instantly incinerated, any alien organisms would condemn the pilot to a lifetime permanent quarantine.
But perhaps this feature of the game was only intended to save time and money on design and coding. Well done in any case. But if this was a deliberate expression of interplanetary ethics, i wholeheartedly applaud the game creators for their insight and character. (standing ovation)

Mudlet and Tapestries muck
Posted 6 years agoI've been switching over to a new desktop computer and setting up all my programs to run as i like.
One of these is Mudlet, a client program for connecting to Tapestries and any other host.
The program itself is hard coded to include several host profiles i never heard of and have no interest in playing, so i wanted to delete them.
Unfortunately the client doesn't seem to like this and respawns the profiles every time you run mudlet.
What follows is a solution for those that are aggravated by disobedient computer software.
keep in mind i use linux mint. results may vary.
First enter your home folder and in the menu>view, select "show hidden files"
Next open the .config folder as root
the file address should be .config/mudlet/mudlet 1.0.config (the mudlet 1.0.config will be a text file)
open that and edit the following. under [DBLSQD] it says autodownload=true
change true to false and save the changes
you can now close the file and open mudlet, and server profiles you delete will stay deleted!

I'll be wearing my druid robes most of the time.
Friday I will be running oldschool D&D.
Saturday I may go to the eagle, for leather night. Or I might go to the drag show at the 90s.

Embroidered badges &etc.
Posted 9 years agoI had an idea for this while I was at work, and because I've seen it being done nowhere else at all I figured I would give it a try.
Since I cannot begin to be able to draw as well as I would like, and yet I do have some skill with a needle and thread, I plan on making simplistic style depictions and maybe articulated letters on linen cloth.
I just recently got a rectangular frame for it, and some fabric. It will be easy and cheap to get floss at the second-hand store if not the local-ish big box store sewing department.
Pictures would end up looking at least as good as the tapestry work for the titles of the animated Redwall series.
I have unfortunately no idea how much I would end up charging for it. As I stated before this has not been done to my knowledge. I will also be employing a number of different methods to get my desired results.
Please let me know what you all think...

Animated Gif's
Posted 9 years agoI've seen these things for many years and have never learned or been taught how to make one.
Can someone please explain to me or link to a video or something that I can easily understand, for how to make even a small one with three frames?
ps, I'm a linux user.

Posted 10 years agoI've been avoiding cons until this year. I went to F^2 last winter, and since I have the PTO and need to use it or lose it.
I'm riding along with Magnus and will be rooming with Astral.
While there I'll be spending much down time in the tabletop game room or wandering around.
I hope to at least once while I'm there eat dinner at Maharajah, maybe with a group?
I'll be wearing my druid robes http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14451443/ most of the time.
This will be the first BIG con I've been to in 5 years.

Posted 10 years agoI graciously updated my phone recently from 8something to 9.1 and I'm very unhappy about the changes you made to my phone without my consent. I still don't have a dvorak keyboard, not only can I not delete those fucking stock apps but you had to add more of them to take up precious space on my phone, and the multitasking feature makes it less convenient. Before all the running apps were side by side and there was even a button for my most recently called numbers so I could easily call my Mistress. But now the apps are overlapping each other and the redial thing is gone!
I've tried to find a way to unlock my phone but all the methods are obsolete as soon as they are made public and the steps are too numerous or inaccurate that I cant follow them. I don't ask for much. and I'm sticking with Linux so itunes is not an option. All I want is a dvorak keyboard and to delete some apps, why is that too much for you apple?

Fuck you gopro. I hate you.
Posted 10 years agoI got a hero4 a couple months back but almost never used it because I have linux and gopro studio doesn't have a linux release. The one time I tried it out I found out that there's no way to negate the fish eye lens, and the options are limited as to what framerate you can use with which resolution. Then today I tried making a tutorial video for the purpose of trying a couple linux programs (Avidemux and KDEnlive) to see if the fisheye can be edited out.
Kdenlive doesn't recognise .mp4 or .mov files, and avidemux is just super confusing to try and learn. Also the test video turned out super grainy and laggy and looked like shit. For the amount of money I payed for this (3 times what my regular camera cost) I expected a superior product. This camera is a piece of trash! I'm going to try and return it. If I can't return it I'm going to throw it into a smelting furnace, and maybe record its demise.

GoPro (sigh)
Posted 10 years agoTHe fisheye lens is ugly and I want it to go away.
I don't know how to use video editing programs and there is no version of gopro studio for linux.
there is a "narrow" fisheye setting but it only applies to one resolution setting and not to any photo settings.
What the fuck were you thinking GoPro? I hate you. you made me spend several hundred dollars on something I can't use.

Three Books
Posted 10 years agoIn the original theatrical release of The Time Machine, there is scene at the end just after the main character disappears and returns to the future he had previously visited. One of the other characters notices that three books are missing from the shelf and the question the audience is left with is "what three books would you have chosen to take with you?" or something to that effect.
For me this was probably the most memorable part of the movie, and for good reason. What three books would I chose to bring to a world in which humanity had started over?
No. 1, dictionary.
Even if I could only chose one book, without hesitation this would be my choice. I have several American English dictionaries to chose from but out of them I would pick Webster's unabridged international as it's by far the thickest book I own. Its 5 1/2 inches thick! it may be a bit on the old side but it is still my first choice, because with the establishment of language, everything else falls into place.
No. 2, Physicians desk reference.
The second biggest book I own, being 4 inches thick. Okay, this one is slightly more centralized to the scenario depicted in the film and the book, but it's still of great import to a budding society.
No. 3, Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.
Unfortunately the edition of this title that I have is probably out of date but it has an inestimable wealth of scientific knowledge ideal for any civilization starting from scratch.

Go-Pro!
Posted 10 years ago I got me one today, cause 50 hours a week for 2 fucking months, at this time of year, working in a foundry.
But on to the good news. I plan on learning how to shoot and edit videos and post them on Vimeo, cause fuck google.
Some of the things I'll record:
Fencing; either mounted to a helmet or shield or shoulder, or some other way to give a good POV of live practice. It could even lead to a short film being made.
Biking; self explanatory.
mountain climbing and hiking; could also me made into short films.
Tutorials; armor making, cooking, gaming...
Any other suggestions?

camping trip soon
Posted 10 years agoI just finished coating the floor and walls of my older tent with polyurethane and I'm surprised how much bulkier it is. It now almost wont fit in the bag I stuff it in. I also coated part of the rain-fly where there was some wear and tear from a previous incident involving wind and pavement, hopefully it'll hold out the rain.
My bike is all set! All I have left to do now is gather together my ten essentials and a few extras. This month I'm working 50 hours a week and I have a whole week off for the holiday, so I plan on going to a couple different parks in my area.
I got pre-approved for a small home loan. If I can't find anything in my price range I can keep renting. My Mistress is in the real estate business so if I can I'd like to give preference to those properties She has listed.

Islam?
Posted 10 years agoThat which does not kill us, makes us stronger. ~Friedrich Nietzsche
It seems to be a recurring theme in human history that there is a tendency for self-predation. Perhaps the most notable instance of this for the point I wish to make, is the dark ages, followed by the enlightenment. When science hatched from the gruesome shell of niggardly phantasmagoria into an age of logic and reason and has only grown to it's current state that we enjoy today.
Islam claims to be the last and best religion. I fervently hope that is true. I have not examined closely the political ramifications of the dark ages. But if the trend continues predictably, we may yet see, if we survive this crucible, an age that surpasses and trumps the enlightenment of past generations.
Otherwise, if fate would make martyrs of us all, I pray that the extinction will be a surgical one and the earth will be left in peace for the next species to evolve to inherit it.

Ubuntu
Posted 10 years agoI'm about to kill my win8 laptop and install ubuntu on it because I can't get XP and at least ubuntu is free and community supported. I just can't get used to 8 at all.
But before I do I want to find a decent mud program for getting onto tapestries and furrymuck. So far I've been using simplemu and the closest thing I can find that I like is either gnome-mud or mudlet.
Does anyone have other suggestions?
