Researchgate?
Posted 10 years agoHas anyone else heard of this or used the sight?
Is purports to be a "facebook for scientists" but I tried to join in order to further my own self-homeschooling, and couldn't because I'm not affiliated with any .edu's and the sight requires membership in order to read any of the articles or even to search for information. In fact it requires a .ed email address in order to sign up.
I don't want to give feedback to stuff or claim anything as my own and I don't have anything more than a GED, and I can think of no reason in this century why I should be denied access to such a treasure trove of knowledge.
Youtube has some interesting videos but I want more. are there alternatives to this site where I can soak up learning?

Spock, with a beard
Posted 10 years agoThis journal is about a dream I had in which I interacted with Spock or someone else on the old enterprise but in the mirror universe where instead of the Federation we have the Terran Empire. In the dream I started by discussing with a superior the question of absolute right and wrong in degrees of binary monochrome. Something interrupted our conversation and when we resumed I began telling him in brief about the teachings of Buddha and segwayed into Hinduism, in particular that all things that exist are impermanent.
The universe and everything in it had a beginning and will eventually come to an end... maybe. But maybe if it does it won't be in the way that science has anticipated. What I mean is that Early in our universes history, matter and constructive energy was perhaps much more solid than it is now, given that as matter on the quantum level is in a state of vibration where it constantly phases in and out of existence, and because I have not found any science as yet to define at what frequency this occurs. If entropy does exist also and if the Hindu theory of Mahayuga can be true, then at some earlier point in our universes history the frequency of quantum vibration was much higher than it is now. If space is something and not absolutely empty, there should be some friction to cause this entropy.
My theory concerning all this is that as the universe gets older, the frequency of quantum phase will decrease as it approaches its mathematical limit. I have no way to accurately graph the curve or at what scale. Nor do I have any suggestion what matter will do once it's close enough to this limit, or if my dream induced science is ultimately flawed.

Fur squared!
Posted 10 years agoI'm going to be there. I have my own room which I'm sharing with one other and I'll bee there all three days (4 nights). This will be the first time I've been to a con since AC 2010 and MFF 2010.
I'll be wearing these two outfits for most of the con
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14451443/ (in character)
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10734590/ (out of character)
should I bring my pirate outfit too?
some of my chain-mail?
I will also be bringing some materials for playing D&D (blue box and 3.5), which I can either play or run.
I may possibly bring along my ceremonial stuff if any of the other practitioners want to form a circle.

I will be bringing my d&D materials if anyone wants to get together for a short adventure, either blue box or 3.5, I can run it or play whatever.

D&D 3.5
Posted 11 years agoI had a thought today about the primary reason why I prefer blue box over 3.x, and that is the amount of experience points gained from defeating monsters and subsequently, how quickly characters level up from the same. The points needed to reach second level, for instance, is not too different between the two systems. conversely, the XP value of say, a Goblin, is very different. In Blue Box, a Goblin alone is worth 5xp, while in 3.5, it's worth 100xp, a difference of 1:20. A gelatinous cube in blue box is worth 125xp, while in 3.5 is worth 1200! Meaning by the time you've killed just 10 goblins on your own, it's time to fuck around with leveling up your character, and we all (who have played 3.5) know how much time that can take. And that's not including all the other Xp's you get from the story and roll playing.
It then occurred to me that the solution to this problem, rather than increase the requirements for gaining a level, is to award only a fraction of the suggested value of XP's. Even a reduction by a factor of 10 would bring back some of the more story driven game play. A player can then focus on character development rather than focusing on all those extra features of the character sheets.

Pagan science
Posted 11 years agoWhile watching some rather frustrating videos of atomic principles on khan academy, it struck me how ambiguous the word Energy is, and how interchangeable are the words Energy and God. Both are potentially amorphous until specific observable phenomena occur.
Energy could possibly be defined in its most fundamental state as: "That which influences or generates a phenomena or change by the action of the same by which such phenomena or change may be measured by the same." And I apologize for making it sound like Neuton wrote it, it's just how it came out.
Now a Cristian scientist might use the word Energy in place of the word God, to say "There is no energy but energy and all things that are, are from energy and from no other than energy." Of course if you did say this around a group of real scientists, you would be viewed as an imbecile. Because no scientist worth his salary would agree that the only form of energy that really matters is energy undefined.
Conversely, someone like a JW might try and argue that all forms of energy are merely not only just energy, but are in fact just God, without further defining what that means or how it works. And the JW's do get a lot of doors slammed in their faces for saying this because they sound just as imbecilic.
The pagans such as the Egyptians recognized, much in the way modern science does, that this Energy/God manifests in various perceivable forms. They gave names and personalities to these Gods/Energies and even described the interaction of them at various levels. Yes, the Kemetics did also have a monad called Aten (He which is all), but it was only popular for a short time to worship Him.
All deities are perceptual representations of otherwise undefined aspects of (energetic) phenomena. Sometimes these are more poetic than scientific, but still they are more tangible to the mind than mere (monarchical) monotheism. And even those people that deny the subsequent manifestation of demi-Gods, are not satisfied with the amalgamation of respectable and hierarchical understanding.

I'm getting anoyed (More iphone angst)
Posted 11 years agoSince getting my iphone 5c, I've been downloading ibooks (the free ones) and once in a while I have something to say about one of them.
So from what I've been led to believe there is supposed to be a way to write a review on one or more titles and give it a star rating.
However... When I go through all the steps to get to that point, it won't let me enter any information for the actual review. The screen goes blank and the keyboard pops up, but typing doesn't make anything happen! Am I forgetting a step or does the reviewing software simply not support my device?

Damnit youtube!
Posted 11 years agoSo for starters, I never made a youtube channel for myself and sooner or later I wanted to be able to leave comments on videos. So I went through my gmail page and set up a google plus account, not that I'll ever use it. Then I went back to a video intending to leave a comment. I click on the comment box (While apparently logged into youtube through g+) yet nothing happened. Not only did nothing happen, the page reloaded and google opened a blank page and then closed it again.

I phone angst
Posted 11 years agoI just recently got my now phone and have been slightly frustrated by the lack of Dvorak support. There are a couple apps for it but thus far there is a limit to the versatility of the apps. That is, whenever I'm required to enter a password, the phone reverts to Qwerty.
This is not acceptable... The Qwerty layout has been obsolete for over 75 years! What will it take to fix this problem? The customer is always right.

Posted 11 years agoI'm looking for adventurers to participate in an online dungeon crawl to take place in posts to this and other journals.
At this time I will be using blue box rules for dungeons and dragons.
Anyone interested please respond here.
If you want to play but don't know how, I can walk you through as we go.

Posted 11 years agoI just looked at the theme and would like to try and make it this year.
a. if I have the money
b. if I have the time off
c. if I can find someone to share a room
d. if I can get a ride there and back
I don't have a fursuit yet and I was going to hold off on going to cons until I have one, but this might be worth it.

A few updates for my peeps
Posted 11 years agoWorking at the foundry in Reedsburg now. I live 3 blocks away so I can just walk there and back. Saves on gas! Currently at work I'm driving a transfer tractor, which is an overhead monorail for carrying about 4700 pounds of 2700 degree(f) of molten iron from the blast cupola to a holding furnace.
Got my old PS2 replaced so now I have a reason to not go out and spend money on fun. For starters I'm playing through FF12, and NOT OPENING ANY CHESTS! (at least until I get the zodiac spear.
Got a new coffee table. It's square and just the right height to be a Japanese style dinner table. I'm going to keep my eyes open for a used electric skillet that I can turn into a space heater for underneath it.

perma-delete
Posted 11 years agoAfter browsing for a few minutes for ways of making deleted files totally unrecoverable, I had an idea which I haven't tried yet, but it seems like it should work.
Open a notepad file and type Om mane padme hum and copy paste ten times or so, then select all and repeat the copy paste process ten more times or so... and keep repeting this till you have lots and lots of "Om mane padme hum"s
save it and create a new folder to put it in
select the file and copy paste, paste, paste, paste, paste........................................
you get the idea
Once the folder is sufficiently large, copy paste the folder in another folder untill you have maxed out your disk space
finally delete everything you just did, and voila, the free space on your disk now has leftovers that is nothing but "Om mane padme hum"s
As I said, I haven't tried this yet.

Posted 11 years agoA couple weeks ago my fridge started dying. It was making loud noises and staying on almost all the time.
I'm currently renting so it's the owner's responsibility to replace it, since it's old and outdated anyway. Later on I'll have the option of buying the place with past rent counting towards the down payment.
I sent him a text with not only the exact measurements of the fridge itself but also the space in which it was sitting.
He had two weeks to spare in getting a new one and yesterday it finally arrived. it took the crew only a few minutes to bring it in and another minute to move my small amount of food, and another minute to haul the old one out.
While they were doing this the landlord was clearing out a storage space that was supposed to have been included with the flat, but I didn't need it until now.
lo and behold the now fridge is a whole FOUR INCHES smaller than the old one! what the hell am I going to do with four inches between the counter and the side of the fridge, or between it and the wall? Nevermind that the door opens the opposite way because it's a very small kitchen and I can enter the fridge from the hallway now. But was this the only one the retailer had available? How will this affect the property value?

SPRrrrrrrOUTS!
Posted 11 years agoI recently got a kit for making my own seed sprouts at a local grocery store. It's square and has four compartments for separate batches of sprouts at a time, or one after the other.
I got some ingredients together and tried it out with overwhelming success. Unfortunately I set too much material in the trays and the sprouts are pushing the lid off.
I started with Mung beans and Wheat berries, both excellent. My next experiment is Lentils and Quinoa.

Lapsang Souchong
Posted 11 years ago I found this remarkable tea the other day on the top shelf at the local health food store. It was the name that piqued my interest at first, but when I opened the jar I was rewarded with a very rich aroma of... The only way I can describe it, is by comparing it to sitting by a campfire. The dark material, the heavy smell of woody smoke. When ever I sample this it reminds me of every time I've gone camping and had a fire to keep me company. The flavor is not strong but for a tea it has it's strengths and presents them well.
From Wikipedia: Lapsang is distinct from all other types of tea because lapsang leaves are traditionally smoke-dried over pinewood fires, taking on a distinctive smoky flavor. "Souchong" refers to the fourth and fifth leaves of the tea plant, further away from the more highly prized bud (pekoe) of the tea plant. These leaves are coarser than the leaves closer to the bud, and have less aromatic compounds. Smoking provides a way to create a marketable product from these less desirable leaves. The aroma of lapsang souchong is due to a variety of chemical compounds. The two most abundant constituents of the aroma are longifolene and α-terpineol. Many of the compounds making up the aroma of lapsang souchong, including longifolene, originate only in the pine smoke, and are not found in other kinds of tea.

Weeds
Posted 11 years ago This Sunday I decided to attend services at the church that I occasionally visit. While I was there, one of the sermons was a little disturbing to listen to.
I don't remember the book or chapter or anything like that because to me it's unimportant. But the story fragment used in the sermon was about weeds sprouting up among a cultivated wheat field. The characters in the story were worried about the wheat being invaded by the weeds and asked the owner of the farm for permission to pull out the weeds, but were told not to do that because some of the wheat would invariably be pulled up with it. They were told to wait till harvesting time and separate the wheat from the weeds and to burn all the weeds then, saying how the weeds were apparently planted by 'the enemy' or some such malevolence.
I pointed out to the pastor after the services were concluded how backwards this view was. That the weeds were there by nature and that the wheat was the invasive and therefore hostile species to the local ecology. Cultivated intentional crops are the colonists, the intruders and conquerors.

Gryphon character idea
Posted 11 years ago To start with, most gryphons are a combination of two things. One being some kind of bird, and the other being some other furred animal like a feline or sometimes canine.
This brings me to my variation on a theme. Regarding the first half, whenever you hear the word gryphon, you think of some kind of raptor, though I have heard of and seen depictions of non-carnivorous birds being used.
For my two parts, I decided to go with a combination for aesthetic quality. taking a red squirrel and a robin and putting them together.
Also, instead of having the forelegs be avian, I chose to keep the squirrel's legs and just add the robin wings and head while keeping the squirrel ears, and maybe a few extra feathers along the spine.
Size would be no bigger than a 20oz soda bottle.
