The nature of creativity
General | Posted 14 years agoI don't do journals much, but this thought popped into my head on the way home from work, and I want to get it out.
I often cruise FA for new articles that catch my interest, as I am sure everyone does. Some I choose to explore further, while others are seen and forgotten just as quickly. There are just so many submissions and posts that to try and follow every single one in existence would be ludicrous to the point of insanity. There isn't a person alive that could make the claim to have seen every article that FA has to offer. Well, OK, they could make the CLAIM, but it would no doubt be a bold-faced lie.
So, some articles get looked at, and others don't. But there isn't always a set pattern; sometimes I will look at art pieces that aren't as polished as other works, and I like them better. Or a short story that is succinct and to the point grips me more than an epic work that spans multiple chapters. Or to use the same analogy, a story riddled with grammatical errors might nevertheless strike my fancy more than a similar story with better spelling and form.
So, if there's not really a pattern, what makes a work worth looking at? And I have to conclude, I'm not entirely sure; people can find different values in the same piece or artwork or writing. It comes down to our uniqueness as individuals. And because of this, are any single one of us truly qualified to say whether a work of art is good or bad?
And if that's the case, what does qualify as good or bad? I have given it some thought, and I have to conclude that it is largely up to the individual who produces said art. But everyone tends to be their own worst critic in the works that they produce. If there is no satisfaction from creating something, what does that mean for the art itself?
Well, I think I have kinda developed a philosophy regarding that. I think a piece of art's merit is largely determined by the effort that said creator put into it. Now, let me explain. One might argue that it takes no effort to produce a stick figure or a similar likeness. Maybe for most, this is true. But if someone takes the time and effort to create the stick figure, doesn't that lend the work some uniqueness? And likewise, if a great artist can produce a masterpiece that few are capable of with little to no effort, doesn't that in part detract from the overall value of the picture?
There is a stick figure series that is somewhat well-known in certain circles, called Ruby Quest. It was created by someone here on FA called
The_Weaver (he joined up after he created and finished this series), and it has been made into a flash series by
TekStation some time ago. Both the original series and the flash series are remarkably well-done, and I enjoy going back to read the story and look at the art every once in a while. It's a series that focuses heavily on plot and character interaction, and not so much the art, but the art itself lends a certain something to the whole environment. It's easy to see there was a lot of work involved in the project, and it developed into something unique and special. It's a perfect example how something can blossom when you put something into your work.
So, I'll get off of my virtual soapbox for now. To everyone out there who expresses an interest in creating something, by all means, do so. It might not always be what you're hoping for, but if you put your heart into it, someone out there will take notice. And you have that moment where you can look back and say, "This is mine. I did this. This is a part of me." Sometimes that little assertion can be a stepping stone for something more.

New story
General | Posted 14 years agoNot much to say...it's far later than I should be up, what with work and all. But yeah. New story, commission from
fyrdrgon that is a sequel to Quiet Time. I think I included all the details about the story in the submission, but I probably forgot some due to the lateness of the hour. More to come in time, promise. *grumbles about morning shifts*

General | Posted 15 years agoJust so much going on these days...sheesh! I've been trying to write, but it's been slow going due to work and RL issues and goodness knows what else...but I am getting stuff accomplished! I am mindful of how long it's been since I posted anything, so I decided to dig up a work in progress and add that to the story list. It's not going to be completed for a while, but I do intend to finish it. I just have other stuff ahead of the list for now. Putting it up will get some of the guilt off of my back for not producing anything tangible, at least. Hope you all like, it's an early work, so it's perhaps not as polished as some of my other stuff, but I think it will provide a little entertainment, at least.
So how about that snow, huh?
General | Posted 16 years agoYeah, I'm not in the worst weather spot right now, but I can honestly say that I am sick and tired of the cold, and sick and tired of winter. I want warm weather already.
Having said that, I'd like to say that I haven't forgotten about writing, just that things have been hectic of late. I've had one or two inquiries about projects that are in the works, and I think I'll bring everyone up to speed.
The first is a commission story for
fyrdrgon involving the subject of cuckolding; it's quite surprising how popular that subject seems to be, despite there not being much content related to it. But I can understand the appeal as well, and I have some plans to make it an interesting story. It's going to be a fairly long story though, so it's going to take me a while to get out.
The second is that prequel to the After-School Demonstration story. I know I've been promising it for a while, but between this and a commission, I feel obligated to get the commission done first. But it is coming, I can promise you that.
Third (overloading myself? Hope not...) is a story that I've had in the works for a couple years now, one which I haven't talked about up until now. A story I started out making for a friend, but got delayed. A rough synopsis: Little sister sees big brother making out with his girlfriend while she is looking for something in his closet, and is...forced?...to become a voyeur as the making out becomes something much more. A little something different, perhaps.
Fourth, I may continue on with the Beelobus story...it's been sitting there in its incomplete state on the submissions for a while, and that bothers me a bit. I'd like to complete it before I continue on with another story idea in the same universe, a story I'm calling The Bully. I actually have the whole thing thought out from beginning to end, but it's going to involve a lot of free time. Which I don't have much of these days.
So, that's what's on my list, if you could call it a list. I don't plan to limit myself to the content I have now; I'll probably try different variants of stories. Hypnotism, Inflation, Transformation...no promises of course, but I feel the more I test myself, the better I will eventually become. I actually have an interesting story idea involving reverse-corruption...but I'm definitely stretching myself thin if I go into too much detail now.
So, be patient with me. Goodies are on the way.

Shhh! It's a secret to everybody.
General | Posted 16 years agoYou get 5 cool points if you get the reference. But enough of that.
I know that some of you who watch this journal like dragons. For those of you inclined towards the female variety, I know of a piece of art that might be hard to find otherwise.

Since it's in scraps, it's not something that comes up in the browser. But it's a very nice piece nevertheless.

Finally, at long last!
General | Posted 16 years agoWhew! What an exhaustive effort this was! I finally got this story finished and out there. It's possible I might need to rework it a little bit, but I'm satisfied with the result. It's large, very large (by my standards anyways), but there's a considerable amount of action at the end that I hope will warrant sticking it through to the end.
The story is called To Find a Weakness, and it is a tribute of sorts to
sinasa's work. I've read hir stories, and while some of the content isn't to my tastes, shi does have a real talent for writing. Worth taking a look, if cuckolding is your cup of tea and like stories of that nature.
I'm not sure how long it will be before I get another story out; a new job is starting soon that I have to prepare for, and it will take some time before I'm settled in. Writing will not be a priority during that time, but I think I can get a little done here and there. Getting something out is good for me, just to see that I can do it if I really want to.
Anyhow, hope you enjoy!

Something new soon!
General | Posted 16 years agoWell, it's been about 3 months since I last posted anything, and I didn't intend for it to be that long. It's going to be a little longer still, but not much longer; I've a story I'm working on that is nearing completion. I've been working on it steadily over the past couple of weeks, and it's already longer than any of my previous stories, but I am hopeful the content will please a number of you. The prequel to After-School is still coming, but I decided to shift gears while I was in a creative mood. So far, I'm happy with the way the story is coming out, and if I'm lucky, I should have it complete sometimes within the next couple of days, if I keep going at the pace I've been maintaining.
This story, called "To Find a Weakness" (a working title, but I think I'm going to keep it), has a fair bit of story set-up, but I am confident that it helps make the payoff that much more enriching. Of course, I will be relying on the comments posted to judge whether or not it will be a success. To be honest, I'll be relieved to put something out there again; I felt like I was dragging my feet a bit. But the best way to fix that is to move forward.
Anyways, just give me a little time, and I'll have something for you, promise!

I must succeed!
General | Posted 16 years agoWell, I had gotten about halfway through one story, and had reached a pivotal point, before I realized that I was wearing myself out on that story a little bit. I've pushed through stories before, but I don't want to tap the creative well too much and force things if I don't have to. So, I decided to switch gears to the prequel story, and I'm happy to say I'm making progress. In case anyone is wondering, I'm about halfway through, and should have it ready for viewing soon. It's not proving to be as easy as I thought it would be, but it's still easier than the previous project, so just keep checking back every so often. It'll be available soon.
Approved!
General | Posted 16 years agoWell, it's been about 4 to 5 days since I posted the gift story, After-School Demonstration, and there's been a pretty good response about it, to the point where I have been asked if I am going to do a prequel or a sequel to the story. Seeing as the story developed off of an RP, I had to request permission from said person to actually chronicle the details of what happened before. Well, to be honest, I didn't HAVE to request permission, but it's a pretty good idea to do so in any case, just to be sure.
Well, to those who wanted to see a prequel to the story, you're in luck; permission has been given, so at the very least, you're going to see one more story in that particular arc. Possibly more than that, but one step at a time.
Anyone who has read the After-School story knows about what happened before that timeline, so there's no secret to revealing what the prequel will be about. The story will start out detailing the relationship between Firewing and his sister Dreamscale, and what happened between them to begin the drake's education in advanced mating 101. ;)
Another prequel may be written regarding his Firewing's mother Glimmertail, but I would need more info regarding that, so for the very moment, consider it a remote possibility. First things first. I have a different story in progress, and talk of a collaboration with another writer, so there's going to be some stories in the near future, but no telling what will come out when. So just be patient.

A gift, freely given
General | Posted 16 years agoWell, it took a little longer than I anticipated (mostly due to distractions or moments of low inspiration), but I managed to put together the gift story for the friend that I mentioned in the last journal. I won't mention who the friend is, in case they choose to remain anonymous, but it is my hope that they will enjoy it.
The story BEHIND the story is that it involves characters that we both came up with off the cuff, and as we explored with them a little and came up with interesting scenarios, the idea of having an exhibitionist scene came up, and was discarded as being impractical for purposes of continuity. Knowing my friend really would have liked the idea, I tried to come up with ways it could be plausible, but it was a bit of a stretch. I remembered the idea, though, and decided to tuck it away for a time when I could perhaps work on it a little more.
Well, with the writing direction I have explored, I figured that it would be nice to try and extend my writing creativity towards that end, and so this story began, slowly but surely. It's not perfect, I know, but it's an effort to bring something to life, and that has its own rewards.
The story in front of the story is that every now and then, it's nice to give something to a friend that they just don't expect. So this is that. And creative smut is kinda fun, too.

Accomplished
General | Posted 16 years agoWell, first trade-commission done, and apparantly it met with approval from the requestee
lazarwolfe, so I'm feeling pretty accomplished right now. Will possibly set up more such trades later on, if anyone is interested in swapping a story for a piece of artwork, a story, or an item of similar interest. Just throwing that out there.
In the meantime, I am working on something else, and while I don't know exactly when I'll be done, it will probably be done a lot sooner then this last work took to accomplish. I know what direction I want to take things, and since I have a fairly good head of steam, I want to hammer out what I can while the inspiration still holds. I'm shooting for a week, two at the most. The reason? A surprise gift for a friend who may be back in town around that time.
But there's no reason that everyone else might not enjoy it as well. I'll let slip a little secret; it involves a situation that most have fantasized about in some regard or another. You'll find out soon enough.

Project status
General | Posted 16 years agoWell, I have officially completed the rough draft of the story as part of a trade with
lazarwolfe and am in progress with working on some other items of interest as well that I have put off until this particular story was complete. I will be posting the story soon, I am sure;
lazarwolfe has informed me of the progress of the trade on his end, and it seems like some minor repair work is needed to get things rolling on his end. The details of the last part might be a little problematic, as the person that would give approval has informed me that they will be away for a little while. However, I am reasonably assured that things will work out satisfactorily.
On a side note, this particular trade work was somewhat difficult to work on, as I had to see things from a frame of mind altogether new. But as I have said before, I take pride on versatility and being able to not limit myself, so it is my hope that it will be enjoyed.
EDIT: The story has been posted in the main section as per Lazarwolfe's request, so it hasn't been through any revisions as per request from him yet. Once he reads it, there may be a change or two, but I am hoping the work is approved.

lazarwolfe has informed me of the progress of the trade on his end, and it seems like some minor repair work is needed to get things rolling on his end.

New details
General | Posted 16 years agoWell, it's been a while, and I apologize for that, to whomever is looking to this journal for information. I'll lay the skinny down right now: I've been busy with a lot of stuff, but thanks to the economy being so bad, I'm now looking for a new job while trying to catch up on things that I've been putting off. Right now, I'm on an assignment to get a trade completed with
lazarwolfe for a friend of mine, and the trade is more than halfway complete. I just have to buckle down and hammer it out. After that, I dunno...maybe write some more short stories, or do more trades, not sure. But I do intend to post more content soon, count on it.
In addition, if anyone wants to do a trade, I'm listening. I'll try not to limit my subject matter, as it helps to try out new situations to measure my worth as a writer.

Fighting for space...
General | Posted 17 years agoSo, my first story got put up a little less than a week ago, and it's gotten a fair number of views, and one comment. Honestly, that's better than I thought it would get. So now, I feel obligated to put something else out there. Question is, what do I want to put up? I have a few story ideas for a friend or two, but those are private and may not see the light of day. But there's others that have been going through my mind a little. One is another demon story, but it takes a different vein, in that...well, let's just say that a late-night tryst turns out different for the demoness than she expected. And another story idea involving a mystery involving a mysterious castle and the unexpected disappearance of some townsfolk that gets a couple adventurers into hot water. That one will emulate another's writing style, as a sort of surprise. And of course, there's a possibility of continuing the story I've written. Right now, it's just trying to decide and get my head straight. We'll see.
