Progress on EverDelve
Posted 14 years agoJust a quick blurb about EverDelve. I've been making good progress on the items/inventory update. It's been a really enjoyable feature to work on so far and is really starting to shape up. I expect to have it ready sometime next week, if not earlier. Stay tuned!

No Everdelve updates this weekend
Posted 14 years agoI've fallen ill and my head is really fuzzy. Not the best time to be writing code. There will definitely be an update soon, though, as I'll be out of work on Dec. 23rd. At that point, I will dig my heels in on finding a job and work on EverDelve and my website in what time I can spare.
My layoff date has been postponed :)
Posted 14 years agoDue to the good work I've been putting in this last month, I have been offered to stay on with MHS for another month. So I get to keep my current job until Christmas, and at 35-40 hours per week. I can't ask for a much better holiday gift than that, really.
Live Ustream from OWS, one of many
Posted 14 years agoFalling out of work again
Posted 14 years agoI just received word from my current employer that they have lost one of their contracts. After the 23rd of this month (1 week from now) I will be out of work.
I know I wanted more time to work on my private projects, but somehow this seems a bit excessive.
The meanings of those phoenix portents I've been receiving are becoming clearer. They were predicting a big change, a turning of the wheel. Fortunately, the portents seem to indicate that something else, something new come out of my loss. I think I'll be okay. I have a decent savings stored up, three housemates who are willing to support me however they can, and a car that's paid off until well into next year. Just won't be able to eat out as often for a while.
As a small silver lining, I expect I'll be working on my private projects a good deal more in coming weeks. Finally I'll be able to put my website in order, and make some more updates to EverDelve. Just as long as I can still make time to look for work.
Wishing all my watchers (all four of you) the best,
~ Flash

In short, the Shuriken Games proposed business model
Posted 14 years agoI have this website. My plan for this website is to host games on it. Flash games, at present, but generally just games. My overall hope is to turn this website into a successful business. All games on the site will be freely available to everyone, ever, period. No need to pirate. Game development and website management will be funded using a crowdfunding model, probably by making use of one of the many new crowdfunding sites that are popping up. (Click for Wikipedia definition.) If the funding goal for a project is escrowed, I do the work, post the results to my website, and collect the funds. The public gets games, and I get paid. Everybody's happy. :)
All the tools to put this business model into practice already exist and are available to the common public with relative ease (excepting the Flash development tools, curse you Adobe and your $800 price tags!). So ... what's stopping me?
1) Lack of audience. Can't very well crowdfund without a crowd.
2) Working 40 hours in my primary job, sometimes more due to contractual obligations.
In short ... I have no time. Part of me wants to make time, but the larger part of me also wants to retain my sanity. AAAAAAAAAAARGH.

Flash game, EverDelve, now in scraps! Naughty stuff moved.
Posted 14 years agoRod of Power has been removed from my gallery and scraps, moved to a new alternate account, PrimordialPassion. My apologies to those who have favorited or commented on those works. I don't enjoy missing links in my favorites any more than you do.
As I start to get serious about my flash games, I want to present a cleaner image than I have been, so no more story porn on this account. Sorry for the abruptness with which I have done this, but I wanted to get clean before I get popular on this account. Thank you for your understanding.
That said, the game I promised is now available for play in my scraps. EverDelve! Go check it out!

A Flash game for my FA gallery? Glee!
Posted 14 years agoOh my god. This game I am making. It's gonna be awesome. I got the compulsion to start working on it yesterday (Sunday) morning, and I've been working on it almost non-stop since then. What started as a random maze generation program is rapidly turning into a nifty little dungeon crawl using the most recent incarnation of my RPG combat engine. It's fantastic to see how quickly the pieces are coming together for this thing. I am totally jazzed.
When it's done, the game will be hosted on my Shuriken Games website AND here on FA! I'll finally have a Flash game in my gallery! :)

FA users need to read this!
Posted 14 years agoSo apparently there was a recent change to the FA Terms of Service. Click the link below to learn more:
http://help.furaffinity.net/article.....s-Viglink.html
Thanks go to
Mazz for making me aware of this.
I personally chose to opt out. As far as I know, FA does not require credit card numbers or address information or anything like that, but I still don't like people sharing information about me without my permission, especially if it's to solicit me for business. When I want something, I can find it and get it on my own. I don't need help from advertising companies.

Our house is a pest magnet
Posted 14 years agoSo today we evicted two fascinating residents from our home. The first:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_mouse
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:L.....se_mg_3263.jpg
And the second:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil%.....h-horse_Beetle
http://s4.hubimg.com/u/1474419_f260.jpg
The little mouse was soooooo cute! Our dog Okami sniffed it out. It was in one of our boxes of games and toolboxes, nestled in the bottom as comfy as you please. We took the box outside and tipped it sideways, and the thing scuttled out into a small stand of grass near our fence. The thing nearly jumped out of the box once during the process, and this box was almost two feet high!
The second ex-resident we found crawling the carpet downstairs. I was really freaked out that it was a termite or some kind of wood-eating beetle, but
justawerewolf was adamant that it was too big to be either of those ... about an inch and a half! Finally we managed to identify it using an online insect identification guide, and we were very relieved to find out the thing does not eat wood at all. It preys on invertebrates like like, insect larva, slugs and snails. Whew! We caught it in a glass jar, took it outside, and released it into the front lawn. I hope it takes up residence in my box garden so it can defend my plants from garden pests!

Posted 14 years agoHere's a quick shout-out for a great artist,
wolf-nymph, who's having a print sale. Check it out!

Also, the
curiodraco artings have begun, and the results have been wonderful. :) I didn't actually win the formerly mentioned auction, but she decided to offer me a 10-hour slot anyway and I happily accepted. My mate
justawerewolf and I have been very pleased to see two of our most loved characters finally come to life in vibrantly colored digital form.
Finally, there's been another update to my gaming website and the RPG combat demo. Modifiers have been added!

CurioDraco FurBuy auction ... I'm winning!
Posted 14 years agoSo
CurioDraco is auctioning herself as an art slave for two days (two 10 hour slots). She's a fantastic artist and I have MUCH need of art, so I'm really hoping I can win one of those slots! The only reason I mention this here is because she's also a very good friend who needs the money for a good cause. So I welcome anybody who is watching me (assuming anybody actually reads my journals besides my close friends) to go to this auction and place your bids. Hurry, the auction ends tomorrow!

Guess what?
Posted 14 years agoIt's 4 AM, and I'm 30. Wheeeeeee.
I should totally be in bed right now. But I've had an awesome day, and I worked some more on that RPG thingamajig that I've got in the works, and it's starting to look and feel really good. It plays like an actual fight. Basically, all I've gotta do is get modifiers (strength buffs, regeneration, haste, poison, etc.) working, then test all the event-driven behaviors (counterattacks and such), get group targeting done, then finally add elemental damage and the engine will be basically done. And I have aaaallll day to work on it some more. =D So the sooner I go to sleep, the sooner I can get started.
Good night, FA.

My mate, justawerewolf, is open for story commissions!
Posted 14 years agoIf you like furries, furry stories, and hawt (yet tasteful) adult situations with actual plot and well defined characters, you need to go check out this journal:

My mate
justawerewolf is taking story commissions, and there's even a contest to win a free story! Please take a look, and share this information with anyone you know who might be interested. Thank you!

Posted 14 years agoI have a short moment before bed. My website is now home to three flash applications ... and a forum! I thought it would be a big challenge to get a forum up and running on my website ... but no! Super-easy. It's hidden at present, but it's there and live and accessible from the web. I'll link to it from my website proper as soon as I think it's ready for the general public.
Work on my RPG combat engine proceeds smoothly. It still doesn't look like much, but there's a lot of features I'll be unlocking over the next month or so - a larger party of heroes, more diverse enemies, magic attacks, multiple targeting, enhanced AI with counterattacks, buffs and debuffs, and more! I can't wait. ^^
Between the progress on my RPG combat engine and my website, I've been feeling really accomplished and empowered lately. I finally have all the tools I need to implement my community-minded game development model, minus a PayPal link perhaps. There's nothing holding me back but me at this point. As long as I continue to put the time in, I will accomplish great things. It's very exciting!

Linked Article - The 6 Most Ominous Trends in Video Games
Posted 14 years agoThis is the industry I work for.
http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-6-m.....ideo-games_p2/
Okay, so this really only talks about mainstream video games. I work the casual space right now. Which means I don't make first person shooters for hours on end or anything like that. I actually work on games that are fun, unique, and interesting. But, seriously now. I don't think I can get my website up and running soon enough. :(
And it's so frickin' true! All you Steam users out there know exactly what I'm talking about! 3 of every 4 video game ads on Steam are for what? Realistic military-themed first-person-shooters! Good god, when does that get old?
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play some Minecraft, or maybe some Battle for Wesnoth. Gotta get some serious exp. for my Horseman homies, upgrade 'em to Lancers, yo.

Lots of Updates!
Posted 14 years agoFinally got around to updating the featured FA people on my profile for the month. I've expanded/edited the lists my little raffle program has to choose from, adding a few artists and writers who I previously left out due to their works being a little on the R or X-rated side. Honestly, there are some artists/writers I adore too much to not feature because of the content of their art/writing - they're just too good not to spotlight.
I also changed the number of FA users it chooses for each category to reflect the number of users in that category. The artist list is huge, while the writers list is pretty short. Remember, those features are chosen completely at random - it's all about fairness and fun.
Now for the REAL news.
After many long nights and hours, I've finally gotten my old RPG combat code back to a working state. There's a prototype on my website now in the Games section if you're curious - keep in mind, though, there really isn't a lot to see yet. The little game is still heavily under construction. Just go to www.shurikengames.com if you want to see.
That's it for tonight, I think. It's going to be a busy weekend. I'm on my way back to Spokane from this weekend into the middle of next week, to visit with old friends and do some face-to-face business at the offices of Mean Hamster Software. Until next time!

So I'm building this video game thingy ...
Posted 14 years agoAs per usual, I've been bouncing from one project to another over here, amidst all the chaos of moving into a new home. Things are slowly settling into place here, and I like my new home very much, complete with my own underground SUPER-SECRET LAB!
Okay, so it's not super-secret. It's just the far side of my bedroom. But it is underground. I like living in basements. They're comfy, quiet and secure. Very easy to hide away from the rest of the world down here.
Anyway ... the most recent thing I've been working on has been tinkering with my old RPG combat game. It's finally up and running, at least to a point:
1) It creates a basic combat between one hero and a group of two monsters.
2) The monsters use AI to determine who they're going to attack (currently there's only one valid target), then do so. Attacks are purely visual; the victim's icon shakes and a red number for damage pops out, but the actual health and health bar do not decrease.
3) Both monsters attack in turn, and then the player takes their turn. Since the only valid action at this point is to attack, it simply asks the player to pick a target by clicking on it.
4) Once done, the hero attacks that target.
5) Back to step 2.
So yeah. Really really rudimentary stuff. But now that I can visually see things happening and the core mechanic is working again, lots of additional functionality should just fall into place. Or so I hope.
If there is any interest in seeing a preview of this game, I can post it as a submission sometime soon. Maybe over the weekend. Let me know!

A random radio song that struck a chord in my heart
Posted 14 years agoYou know how sometimes you hear a song on the radio and it just happens to reflect EXACTLY how you're feeling in that moment?
~ In My Life ~
There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends
I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

My New Icon and Wolf Hunting/Governing
Posted 14 years agoAs I was wandering across the web, I stumbled upon an image and thought it would make a great FA icon. Look at that face! In fairness, the icon was derived from an image found on the website below and is of a husky/wolf mix. The photographer was not listed.
The rest of the webpage has a lot of very provoking articles relating to wolves, their preservation, hunting, and interactions between wolves and livestock owners. While the facts presented in the blog seem to be highly slanted, they do raise very heart-wrenching points. There are also a number of wonderful photographs of wolves and other creatures. :) I see wolves as beautiful, tragically misunderstood creatures, and would love very much to see humanity come to a better understanding with them. I believe a human/wolf harmony can and should be reached.
Here's the aforementioned blog. Read it with a grain of salt.

In this spirit of fairness, here are a couple of relevant articles from sources that seem a bit more scholarly:

Updated my FA Profile
Posted 14 years agoNew profile content, yeah. I'm going to make an effort to randomly feature certain artists, writers, and friends on my watch list each month. There really are a lot of great artisans here on FA, and they deserve the attention. So check my profile each month to see who's new!
I will now go back to working on ... stuff. Yeah, stuff.
